Students: Welcome to the 2016 Utica College Job & Internship Fair

You’ve come dressed professionally, you’ve conducted preliminary research about the organizations, and you’re ready to make a positive first impression. Now, here are some tips to make your time as productive as possible.

Speak to the organizations that interest you the most first. The event is only 2 hours long, and lines may begin to form for some employers. Then, take the time to visit other employers to further explore opportunities and career fields. If you find an employer that is unfamiliar to you, don’t just walk by, stop and learn from the recruiter about what the organization does! Prepare your introduction. Start by extending your hand to offer a firm handshake. While smiling and making eye contact, introduce yourself. Don’t rush your words and speak clearly. The Fair may be a little noisy, so be sure the recruiter can hear you. For example:

“Hi, my name is Beth Rivera, and I am a Management student with a Human Resources Management concentration finishing my sophomore year. I saw on your website that Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has a summer internship in HR at your corporate headquarters, and I happen to live in the Rochester area. Would you be able to tell me a little bit more about what you’re looking for in an intern? I also have a copy of my résumé to share, if you’d like.”

After the conversation, take the recruiter’s business card and any available brochures. Thank the recruiter for his or her time. Sending a professionally written thank you e-mail after the Fair is a nice touch, too. Take advantage of Career Services’ other promotions during the event. All students attending the Fair are eligible to win a Kindle Fire, and FREE professional head shots will be available in the classroom adjacent to the Fair. Your head shot may be used for your professional networking accounts, including UC Career Connect and LinkedIn. Do you have a question about Fair etiquette or need help finding an employer? Staff members from the Office of Career Services will be at the Fair and are happy to help you!
