Swamper(Ctenosaura bakeri)

Utila is a small volcanic island, home to three iguana species. One is very unique and endangered; the Swamper iguana. The Swampers only live on Utila, nowhere else in the world. Swampers live in mangrove forests and vary in color from light to dark grey, often with a turquoise tint. Swampers eat mangrove leaves, berries, ants, and crabs.

Swampers and Highlanders both have spiny tails. These iguanas are called spiny-tailed.

The Swampers reach adulthood at 2 years of age. Males grow to approximately 1 meter in length and weigh up to a kilogram. Female Swampers are smaller, about 350 grams. After breeding, female Swampers lay between 7-14 eggs underground, on sandy beaches.

Baby Swampers are brown and grey which helps them hide in the mangroves; an excellent camouflage! Swamper hatchlings are very small when they emerge from the eggs measuring about 6 centimeters. The two other species of iguana on Utila are green in color as hatchlings.

The common Highlander Iguana (Ctenosaura similis)

A relative of the Swamper, the Highlander is one of the largest spiny-tail iguanas and found all over Central America and Mexico. Their body coloration is whitish grey or tan with dark stripes and stiff spines. They live in many habitats, and are commonly seen basking on sun-lit rocks.

Green Iguana(Iguana iguana)

Dwellers of trees, Green Iguanas are identified by the large subtympanic scale, on each side of their head. The dewlap under their chin has spines or points unlike the smooth dewlaps of the spiny-tailed iguanas. Their long striped tail is smooth and lacks the distinct spines of the ‘spiny-tailed’ iguanas. Males can be orange in color in breeding season.

Our unique Utila Swamper Iguana is in danger!¡Nuestra Iguana Swamper propia de Utila está en peligro!

The Swampers’ population is rapidly declining and they are becoming extinct. They need your help to survive. Swampers are protected by Honduran national law, CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) and IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

How We Can Save the Swampers

Do Not Eat or Hunt Iguanas. Hunting is Illegal. No comas ni mates iguanas. La caza es ilegal.

Hunting of iguana for food is illegal. Swampers are eaten faster than they can reproduce. Females with eggs are targeted by hunters. This means the loss of a female of reproductive age as well as all her future offspring. Think of all the lost iguana babies, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Control your livestock, pets and feral animals: dogs and cats eat iguanas as well as the native birds. Native wildlife need protection against these introduced non-native animals.

Preserve Mangroves - Build sustainably

Development has resulted in the destruction of mangroves and removal of native plants. Mangroves are used for dump sites. Pristine nesting beaches are built on and buried under plastic trash. Swampers deserve land of their own and people need good water quality and protection from hurricanes. Female swampers travel to nesting grounds. Hatchlings roam the island looking for places to live. Males travel to find their special female. When Swampers move in your neighborhood, please report where you see them to Kanahau so we can include them in our studies..

Protecting Swampers will not eliminate the economic potential of the land. Eco-tourism is a growing industry with potential for many local jobs.
