CODE ENFORCEMENT

City staff addressed the Raleigh Drive Neighborhood Watch group, to discuss code violations and the process for

remedying them.

PLANNING

Green Team

This past week a fourth blue heron bird sculpture was added to the

previously installed three herons along the shoreline at Waterfront

Park. The herons are the creation of artist Anthony Gargiulo (no

relation to the Foundation). Donated by the Gargiulo Art

Foundation, this most recent bird was in memory of the Gargiulo

Art Foundation’s 2012 Flagler County Artist of the Year, Richard

Schreiner. Richard’s prolific body of work spanned 5 decades,

beginning in New York City and culminating here in Palm Coast.

The previous three birds were donated by brothers Frank and Tom

Gargiulo and Arlene Volpe in memory of Frank and Tom’s

parents, Philomena and Angelo.

On July 20th

at 9:00 a.m., all four bird sculptures will be formally dedicated to the City at the park. It is the

hope of the Gargiulo Art Foundation that our citizens find their own personal enjoyment in these bronze life-

sized wonders, perhaps reminding us of our connectedness with nature, or perhaps, someone special in their

life.

We’re going to a Mega-Adoptathon! This super event will be held from July 26

through July 28 at the Fairgrounds in Jacksonville and you are invited. At last year’s

Mega –Adoptathon, almost 60 FHS cats and dogs found wonderful forever homes

and we hope to do even better this year.

Why is this adoption event so special? Well, it’s sheer size for one. More than 50

shelters and animal rescue groups will be represented and the organizers expect that

more than 1,000 animals will go home to live with some very lucky families. People

come from South Georgia to Volusia County and as far west as Levy and Alachua

Counties. Literally thousands of folks show up to adopt animals and there are very

few “lookers”. We were amazed at how many families showed up with cat carriers

and leashes, ready to take home a new family member and companion.

We don’t often get such a great chance to show off our dogs and cats and let them be

seen by this wide audience. With so many people looking, the chances are very good

that someone will find their perfect pet at the FHS booth.

Roxie will be going up with us as will Goldie, both sweet older dogs that someone

will be happy to take home with them. We’re hoping that Rocky, who’s been here

forever, will be discovered by that active family that can match Rocky’s energy.

And, of course, we’ll be taking up tons of kittens, born during kitten season and

lovingly cared for in foster homes just waiting for the chance to go to a forever home.

You can help us with this mammoth undertaking. We need help in bathing and

grooming dogs, brushing and soothing cats, packing the goody bags we’ll be giving

out, transporting and setting up all of our tables, crates, and decorations, and helping

us move the animals from our Shelter to the Event.

And, of course, we’re always happy to have volunteers at the event, taking care of the

animals and helping people find the perfect pet for their families. If you can help,

even for a couple of hours, please contact our Volunteer Coordinators, Gary Langley

or Michelle Bertsch at 386-445-1814.

Special Announcements

CHARLIE

Charlie is a wonderful 8 year old

Golden/Shep mix that is in need of a

retirement home to live out his last

few years. He came to the shelter

last year when his owner passed

away. He was brought in with

another dog that passed away from

geriatric issues while here at the

shelter. So in the span of a month,

he lost two families. He was adopted

into a loving home but had to be

returned because they were moving

and could not take him with them.

Charlie has once again lost a family.

He is desperately hoping for a

family that will commit to being his

last family. Charlie is housebroken,

neutered, and up to date on shots.

He gets along with most dogs and loves to be shown attention.

NEWS RELEASE – City of Palm Coast Contact: Cindi Lane, Communications & Marketing Manager 386-986-3708; cell 386-214-4729 July 15, 2013 Waste Pro converts to cleaner Compressed Natural Gas for trucks used in Palm Coast

Palm Coast, Fla. – As part of the City of Palm Coast’s commitment to environmental

stewardship, the Waste Pro trucks gathering residents’ garbage and recycling items are now

being fueled with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), which burns cleaner than diesel fuel. As an

added bonus of the conversion to CNG, the monthly residential solid waste fee in Palm Coast is

dropping slightly starting this month – from $18.77 per household to $18.62.

Palm Coast is the third area to utilize Waste Pro’s new Compressed Natural Gas fueling

stations. Waste Pro’s other CNG fueling stations are in Fort Pierce and Daytona Beach, and the

company plans to open additional facilities in Jacksonville and Tallahassee.

In Palm Coast, 19 Waste Pro trucks equipped with new CNG motors are used to gather trash

and recycling materials. Contract stipulations in 2012 between the City and Waste Pro called for

increased recycling opportunities, a doorstep hazardous waste program and cleaner truck

emissions. All three provisions have now been completed.

Compressed Natural Gas is a fossil fuel substitute for diesel, widely considered a more

environmentally clean alternative. The fuel helps operate quieter vehicles with fewer

maintenance issues. CNG also costs less than diesel fuel.

“Together, the City of Palm Coast and Waste Pro have worked diligently to provide our

residents the cleanest and most cost effective ways to improve our environment through our

new solid waste processes,” said Palm Coast Contracts and Risk Manager Dianne Torino, who

oversees the City’s contract with Waste Pro. “It’s a win-win for everyone.”
