Success Stories – as clients speak “…”

The story revolves around a poor old widow residing in Dullahpur village of Ghazipur

District, Uttar Pradesh. Shakuntala, the lady, lost her husband 15 years ago and had to

work in others’ house, washing utensils, clothes and brooming-swiping as a home servant.

Being a house maid was the only visible option for her to earn livelihood and take care of

her small children.

One day, from her vicinity she came to know about the possible credit support from

Utkarsh. With a hope in her eyes to get some credit support, she decided to take up some

economic activity to be self-sufficient.

She became member of a Joint Liability Group and along with her son, Santkumar, she

decided to set up a small eatery in the market area. She then availed her first loan with

Utkarsh in July 2012.

With this sum, she started a small litti-chokha eatery in the market, which saw good

response from the customers. Motivated by this, she then left the house-maid work and

fully focused on this business activity.

In April 2013, she took the second loan and upgraded her small eatery joint to a small hotel

with more items.

Presently, she has availed a loan of ₹30,000/-and running one more Fast Food Joint along

with her well grown Hotel. Her income is regular now and she has employed two helpers,

thereby also generating employment for others. She has also constructed her two room

house.

She recalls her struggle days and expresses her gratitude to Utkarsh for supporting her in

right time, otherwise she would have continued to work as house maid in others’ house.
