utpa gear up parental involvement component presents: avanzando juntos, gearing up for college
DESCRIPTION
Parental involvement in High School Parent involvement actually declines as students grow older There are many reasons from the parent and also from the school for this lack of involvement. One of the reasons concerns the lack of understanding of nontraditional families on the part of the school system. The nontraditional family is struggling to deal with many factors that affect every member of the family. These can definitely affect the way that the family is able to be involved in the student's education.TRANSCRIPT

Las Platicas Academy
What is Las Platicas Academy?• Las Platicas Academy is a unique and
incredibly effective venture. Tapping on what makes the South Texas Rio Grande Valley culture special and distinct; and that is our love to platicar (chat). However, our platicas are focused on our children’s education and academic opportunities.
What is Las Platicas Academy?• UTPA GEAR UP provides 15 hours of
instruction to volunteer parents in sequential academic sessions.
• Each session is designed to educate Parent Volunteers on different aspects of their child’s life and most importantly, prepares them to share the information with other parents in their community.
The Academy• Each Family and Community Liaison recruits at
least one (1) parent volunteer per every hundred GEAR UP students in their campus.
• Parents are trained in sequential form through Las Platicas Academy.
• Upon completion of 15 hour training, a graduation ceremony is held, and parent volunteers are recognized as “Platicadoras” or “Platicadores”.
