Statement:New Mexico Affirms

Marriage EqualityDecember 23, 2013

The Rev. Peter Morales, president of theUnitarian Universalist Association (UUA),issued the following statement applauding thelegalization of same-sex marriage in NewMexico:

Last week, the New Mexico Supreme Courtunanimously ruled in favor of granting same-sex couples the same rights of marriage asheterosexual couples. I am thrilled tocelebrate New Mexicos decision to affirm thefreedom to marry.

I applaud all who stood up against inequalityand intolerance, including the eight NewMexico counties that began issuing marriagelicenses to same-sex couples before theruling. This courageous act demonstratesagain that more Americans realize thatmarriage equality strengthens families,protects children, and ensures the basic rightsof citizenship for lesbian, gay, bisexual, andtransgender couples.

I am grateful to the Unitarian Universalists inNew Mexico who stood on the side of love insupport of marriage equality. We celebratethis victory and, at the same time,

acknowledge the important work there still isto do in other states. More recently, a federajudge struck down Utahs ban on same-sexmarriage saying it was unconstitutional. Eventhough the state has already filed a notice ofappeal, I strongly believe it will only be amatter of time before same-sex marriage isfully realized across this country.

It has been an amazing year for marriageequality.
