UUFSD Standing on the Side of Love and Compassion “Children On The Bus
Humanitarian Crises”
Rev. David Miller
Dear UUFSD,Thanks to all who have answered the call to assist the refugees in need. Whatever the politics of the situation, these are human beings needing love and kindness.
The San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium (SDIRC) has organized a support system to provide care packages and other assistance for the families who are arriving with little more than the clothes on their back. We have collected two (2) pick up trucks of clothing, toiletries and other necessities and raised over$1000.00 for the SDIRC to assist refugees as they proceed through immigration processing, usually a lengthy process.
Thank you again,
Rev. David

Planned Giving Program UUFSD has reactivated the Planned Giving Program to enable members and friends to remember our Fellowship in wills or other estate plans. Please contact Rigdon Currie ([email protected], 760-452-6305) or Caroline DeMar ([email protected]) if you would like to consider a planned gift or have questions.
What exactly is the UUFSD Board and what do they do? Good questions. The Board is the governing body for the Fellowship, as set out in the Bylaws. “The Board shall have the authority to do all things necessary to conduct the business of the Fellowship.” Does that help?
This year’s Board, serving from July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015, held a retreat to plan its work for the coming year. The basics come first – making sure we have the people, programs, money, and organizational capacity to operate well, to fulfill our mission now and every day. We view this through the lens of our strategic plan as we also look to ensure that we have the people, programs, money, facilities, and organizational capacity to grow and
continue to serve. Each month we will provide more information in the newsletter on what we’re up to. Meetings are open to anyone and will be announced and posted regularly. Board minutes will be posted on the UUFSD website by our new Board Secretary, Mark Tuller. Thank you, Mark!
The Board agreed that it’s members need to be more visible and more visibly engaged with all the other things happening at UUFSD. Each Board member serves as a liaison to one or more committees or program areas, making sure we know what you’re doing and what you need, so that we are al l supporting each other. Whether it’s funding, access to space, visibility in t h e O r d e r o f Service, or a table on the pa t io – we’re here to help you succeed. If you are responsible for some activity at the Fellowship and haven’t heard from a Board member, please contact me ([email protected])
We also agreed that we need to continue our efforts to find ways for everyone to be more involved in the Fellowship. T h e B o a r d members are all c o m m i t t e d t o UUFSD because we feel connected – to each other a n d t o o u r miss ion. When you get involved, i n F e l l o w s h i p affairs you meet p e o p l e , y o u understand what’s going on better, and you feel like you matter. And
you do matter!
We are working to redefine what were “volunteer tasks” to feel more like “opportunities” to get involved. Instead of asking you to join a committee for an indefinite period of time without knowing what that really involves, soon you will have the opportunity to be part of a team that has a specific task for a specified period of time. Are you good with numbers, and willing to help with special fund-raising events? Will you help in the kitchen for a few Sundays this year? Do you want to know our young folks better and help them become amazing adults? With two services, you can teach RE and not miss the wonderful music and sermons in any worship services.
Nobody should be expected to do everything – some volunteers have given so much for so long they are getting burned out. And everyone should have the opportunity to do something. Serving as a greeter on Sunday morning gives you a chance to welcome folks you know and meet folks you don’t know. U s h e r i n g provides another chance to be a cheerful face to let visitors and members know we’re glad to see t h e m . S t a r t thinking about how you want to d e e p e n y o u r commitment to the Fellowship. I guarantee it will be rewarding for the Fellowship to benefit from your talents and it will be rewarding for you as a member of this beloved community.

UUFSD - THE YEAR IS 2020DESIGNING & BUILDING THE DREAM
Now that we've hired Domusstudio Architecture (“Domus”) to develop a master plan for our capital campaign, we are now starting to design and build the UUFSD dreams that our Dream Catchers caught.
Much has happened since last month’s newsletter. Domus will conduct a congregation-wide workshop on August 24, after Sunday service. A second workshop will follow in early to mid-September. We hope you’ve already seen the email discussing the workshop, the campus tours, and the collage exercise (more on all three below), in which we hope all will participate, as we prepare to give Domus the clearest possible picture of what we collectively envision for our congregation.
SPITF is now Dream Builders. In last month’s newsletter we said “SPITF is not yet a UUFSD household word, but Just You Wait.” Well, you will have a long wait, as the acronym for Strategic Plan Implementation Task Force engendered unpleasant mental images, so it has been moved to the dustbin of history. At this stage in our progress, Dream Builders more accurately describes the team.
Campus Tours Available: The campus tours will commence 15 minutes after each Sunday service, through August 17, as members of Dream Builders assume the role of docents to show you the various areas of the campus we are looking to refurbish and enhance, and go over the ideas that we gave the architect in our Request for Proposal (RFP). For those interested in seeing the full 10-page RFP, it is on our website at http://uufsd.org/facilities/dream-builder/
The Collage Project: We want everyone - YOU - to be part of building our dreams. Share your words, images, fabrics, and more…..to represent/evoke the essence of UUFSD in a collage to be given to the architects, as described in a recent email and inserts in the Order of Service. The collage space will be available for your contributions beginning August 3, continuing until our first workshop with our architect on Sunday, August 24.
August 24 Workshop with the Architect: The workshop, in Founders Hall, after the service, will consist mostly of Domus listening to your ideas, going over the collage, and offering a few initial ideas of their own, along with some imagery. The workshop is something that you definitely will want to participate in.
John Sherman, Capital Campaign Chair
So now it begins: the years of meetings to produce the Dream Catcher survey, the Strategic Plan, and the RFP we sent to the architects have brought us a terrific architect who will provide a Master Plan with a visual representation of our collective vision. A giant wheel, which took a lot of work to construct, has now, through our collective effort, begun to turn, and the momentum continues to grow.
