About the UV meters

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Each year, around 13,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in Austarlia while 960,000 treatments for non-melanoma skin cancer are performed.

Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the major cause of skin cancer and skin damage in Australia.

The good news is that skin cancer is therefore largely preventable by minimising exposure to UV radiation.

The UV meter, designed with its own UV sensor, displays the World Health Organization’s UV Index, a numerical scale which shows the UV strength and skin damage risk. Sun protection is recommended when the UV level is 3 or above.

Many people believe that we only need to worry about UV radiation when it is hot, however the reality is that even in cool weather we are all susceptible to the dangerous effects of UV overexposure when the UV is 3 or above.

The UV meter, designed by Cancer Council WA, is an educational tool that provides an accurate reading of solar UV radiation in real time for its location.

Included with the UV meter is signage (below) that tells you what the numbers mean and how you should protect yourself accordingly.

Why consider buying a meter?

Australia experiences a broad range of UV levels from south to north. The UV meter is a unique tool that provides accurate UV data for the specific location.

Research has shown that childhood overexposure to UV radiation can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life, making sun protection in schools vital to reduce the future impact of skin cancer in our community.

Studies also show that we need a certain level of vitamin D for healthy bone and muscle development, the main source of which is UV exposure.

The UV meter is an excellent tool to inform when the UV level is under 3 and no sun protection is required - an ideal time for individuals to safely top up their vitamin D.

The UV meter can assist businesses and organisations with duty of care requirements around UV protection of outdoor workers.

The constantly changing UV levels displayed on the meter help capture the attention of employees and act as a reminder that complements existing sun protection policies.

Features

• The meters are solar powered, allowing for installation in locations away from mains power which also reduces operating costs.

• Meters can be single or double sided, meaning they can be viewed from 180° to 360° around the installation.

• The UV meter is supplied in a tough powder-coated aluminium and polycarbonate weatherproof case.

• The meter design allows for a variety of installations including wall, pole or frame mounting, or even as part of an art installation.

• The accuracy of the meter is maintained by Cancer Council WA who has the ability to monitor and calibrate the meters remotely via a Wi-Fi or 3G connection to the internet. This is done at no additional charge.

Product overview

The UV meter is a free standing unit that includes a solar panel and UV sensor. It displays the current strength of UV radiation in terms of Global Solar UV Index units.

Being solar powered enables it to be situated in remote locations and reduces running costs. Included in the unit is a battery to ensure the UV meter functions regardless of the weather conditions or lack of sun. The UV sensor, display digits and electronics are high quality to ensure a long life span.

The numerical display uses seven segment electromechanical technology. These require far less power than other options such as LCD and LED, and are also visible in direct sunlight.

The whole unit has been designed for outdoor use. The powder-coated aluminum case will not rust or deteriorate quickly when exposed to standard weather conditions. The polycarbonate face is designed for maximum impact resistance.

The UV sensor detects the UV level every 60 seconds and displays the highest reading reached during a moving five minute window. This information is also sent to www.myUV.com.au via the Wi-Fi or 3G network.

The Wi-Fi / 3G capability also allows monitoring and (if necessary), remote calibration of the UV meter by Cancer Council WA.
