Dus bij deze, een aantal niet te vergeten personen die ik wil bedanken, of tegen wie ik gewoon wil zeggen dat ze tof zijn.

Henk en Petra, bedankt dat jullie mij, als niet-biomedicus, toch hebben aange-nomen voor dit PhD traject. Ik weet niet of ik dat nou puur aan mijn sollicitatie skills te danken had, of meer aan mijn interesses in voetbal. Elk geval ben ik blij dat ik deel mocht uitmaken van een bijzonder interessant project met bijzonder interessante mensen. Als vanzelfsprekend bedank ik jullie hier samen. Voor mij (en mijn omgeving) zit dit er zo ingebakken, dat er geen Henk is zonder Petra en geen Petra zonder Henk. Maar toch. Henk, bedankt dat je als ‘onofficiële co-pro-motor’ toch altijd bereid was om feedback te geven. Of om mee te denken als er weer eens ‘troubles’ waren. Petra, gezien mijn onconventionele promotietraject met wisselende werkgevers en promotoren, was jij als co-promotor degene die de voortgang van het project moest bewaken. Je pragmatisme daarin heeft hier zeker bij geholpen. Ook bleef je positief als ik mijn twijfels had. Bedankt hiervoor. Ik wens jullie en de kids alle geluk.

Beste Menno, je werd pas een jaar geleden officieel mijn promotor. Desondanks heb je een grote rol gespeeld en er mede voor gezorgd dat ik dit proefschrift op tijd kon afronden, zodat het niet in het gedrang kwam met mijn vervolgopleiding. Bedankt dat je dit op je hebt genomen. Ook mijn grote dank voor de inhoudelijke bijdrage, ondanks dat dit een parasitologisch onderwerp was, maar hé, een microbioloog kan alles!

Mijn grote dank gaat ook uit naar de commissieleden die bereid waren dit proef-schrift grondig door te nemen en wiens kritische vragen ik 20 oktober zal pogen te beantwoorden.

Lieve kamergenoten, Johanna en Sandra. Zo was het toch nog gezellig na het sluiten van KIT-BR. Thee, dropjes, fruitvliegjes, knutjes, en af en toe een meelevend knikje. Lieve Inge, Laura en Gerard. Helaas heb ik het ’t laatste jaar zonder jullie moeten redden. Inge, je hebt me enorm veel geholpen met alle experimenten, en met het stellen van kritische vragen (al maakte je er bijna een sport van, maar waar niet van eigenlijk). Maar daarnaast was het gewoon super gezellig, in het lab, bij de koffie, tijdens etentjes, bij boogschieten, of een enkele keer in de kroeg. Laura, volgens mij ken ik jou niet anders dan lief en vrolijk. Zelfs tijdens frustrerende momenten. Bedankt voor al je hulp, je grapjes en bemoedigende woorden. Gerard, ik ben blij dat je me ‘best wel mee vond vallen voor een arts’. Ik vond jou ook wel tof. Bedankt voor je nuchterheid en humor. De echte ‘Schoone’ hangt aan de muur!

Lieve Maluuuuh, jij bent er echt vanaf het begin al bij. Inmiddels zijn we een stuk ouder en wijzer, en een paar illusies armer. Zo vraag ik me af of we ooit nog samen in een rond huis gaan wonen, maar denk ik wel dat als we hetzelfde jurkje aantrek-ken, we nog steeds voor tweeling door kunnen gaan.

Lieve Rosanne, het is al een tijdje terug dat we samen op het blok stonden in de shaker, maar toch heeft dat een aardig stabiele basis gelegd waardoor het altijd weer leuk is als ik je zie!

Lieve Suus, ook met jou heb ik een behoorlijk lange geschiedenis vol kokindjes, logeerpartijtjes, lachsalvo’s, buikglijders en wc-avonturen. Mogen er nog vele vol-gen!

Leffe Blond Dames! Hand-ha-ving! En dit jaar kampioen? Dank voor de leuke trainingen en wedstrijden waardoor ik lekker niet aan filter papiertjes, logistische regressies, of deadlines hoefde te denken!

Waar is de borrel? Geneeskunde matties. Beri-beri. Bedankt voor de gezelligheid en de kenmerkende groepsdynamiek. Loek hoor je van verre, luid en duidelijk. Bart zit slapend op de bank met kerstballen in z’n oren en een biertje in z’n hand. Bram zit er onderuit gezakt naast. Joost lacht om het woordgrapje van Bram en strijkt even door z’n steeds minder krullende haar. Benjamin houdt, gebarend met z’n handen, een betoog tegen Jade, over duurzaamheid ofzo. Daisy giechelt met opgetrokken neusje om een uit-de-hand-gelopen-date verhaal van Bart en Marjolein. Rachel roept dat we een spel gaan spelen en Marjolein vindt dat totally amazing. Tim heeft dienst.

Lieve voetbalchickies, lieve Els, Rosalien en Charlotte. Ik heb jullie misschien niet zo vaak gezien als ik had gewild in het afgelopen jaar, maar gelukkig was er naast het uitroeien van allerhande virussen altijd tijd voor een uitgebreide update als we elkaar zagen. Ik ben trots op jullie alle drie, hoe jullie liefdes hebben gevonden, banen hebben gewisseld en allemaal persoonlijke dromen nastreven.

Lieve sletjes. Daar staat het dan. Waar Judith het niet bij de naam durfde te noemen en Lidewij zich achter een taalbarrière kon verschuilen, heb ik hier toch mooi ons koosnaampje zwart op wit gedrukt. Inmiddels verblijden jullie mij al meer dan tien jaar met jullie vriendschap, en waar dat in het begin vooral om pasta pesto draaide, is de emotionele verbondenheid inmiddels groot. Malawi was het land waar Lidewij en ik nader tot elkaar kwamen. Tot op irritante hoogte (voor de omgeving dan) deelden we veelvuldig onze voorliefde voor rap en gezang. Bedankt Lidewij, ik koester deze herinneringen. Judith, onze diepe emotionele momenten volgden niet lang daarna. Als ik op mijn fiets naar je toesnelde, als ‘sletje-to-the-rescue’, of tijdens intense De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig concerten, volledig op dezelfde golflengte tijdens ‘buma in je zak’. Jou straks als paranimf aan mijn zijde hebben doet me deugd. Maar zonder gekheid op opstootstaal, jullie zijn m’n sletjes for life.

Lieve Jan, Rieky, Indra, Hubert, Elise en Benjamin. Een lieve familie in een vreselijk ver gehucht, waar je het speciaal bier van de zuiderburen al bijna kan ruiken. Bedankt voor de echte ‘Bakermans’ in de tuin, de leuke uitjes en verstoppertje in het donker.

Lieve oma, er is er geen een als jij. De show stelen op m’n feestje, sjoelen, wandelen met een wankelend evenwichtsorgaan, hoeiii, als er maar gezelligheid is.

Mijn familie is hier eigenlijk te nuchter voor, of zo doen ze zich graag voor, dus nog leuker om eens vast te leggen: ik vind jullie fantastisch. Het leukste gezin van de hele wereld. Pap en mam, als biologische zestig plussers huppelen jullie rond als dertigers (oké, veertigers). Vol enthousiasme doen jullie mee aan dixit, codenames of een potje tafeltennis. En ook al vertel ik misschien te weinig, ik heb het idee dat ik met alles bij jullie terecht zou kunnen. Mirthe, ik zal toch altijd naar je op blijven kijken als grote zus, en altijd met een schuin oog kijken of jij iets ook leuk, goed, of mooi vindt. Elk geval vind ik vrijwel alles wat jíj doet leuk, goed en mooi. Tijmen, je bent echt een schitterend figuur. Met slechts anderhalf jaar verschil hebben we altijd vrij veel samen opgetrokken, of dat nu op het pleintje, op de camping, of op wintersport was, of toen ik tijdelijk bij je mocht crashen. Eigenlijk gaat dat altijd super relaxed, een reden waarom ik je als mijn paranimf heb gevraagd. En om met je te pochen natuurlijk. Lieve Veerle, klein zusje, ook dat zal je eeuwig blijven. Daarom ben ik nog meer onder de indruk van hoe je je eigen sojaboontjes dopt. Maar toch blijft er altijd een beeld hangen van een meisje met twee staartjes met wie ik zo heerlijk kon spelen.

Ook naar de ‘aanvulling’ wil ik mijn opperste waardering uitspreken. Erik, de vuurwerkramp is je vergeven, ik vind het vooral bere-gezellig dat je erbij bent; we kunnen altijd rekenen op wat droge humor van jouw kant. Annemarie, zo fijn dat jij erbij bent! Ondanks een moeilijk jaar ben je altijd attent, lief, en heerlijk grappig. En Jesse, met gevatte replieken, bewerkte foto’s en grapjes over je schoonfamilie was je al snel geïntegreerd in de familie, zeker nu je ook nog een aardig potje vegetarisch begint te koken.

Tenslotte, Beril en Leander, jullie zijn natuurlijk m’n oogappeltjes. Olijke droppies, met jullie guitige koppies. Komen jullie weer snel logeren?

Uwe beminnelijkheid, lieve Eelco. Zonder jou was dit een heel saai proces geworden. Je bent m’n prototype, koning van de dans, nachtegaal, sportieve adonis, hunkerende romanticus, veelvraat, bijna-alleskunner, heimelijke huisman doch ambitieuze fysiofanaat. Ik heb zo’n vreselijk veel zin in de rest van mijn leven met jou.

About the authorEsmée Ruizendaal was born on the 15th of November 1986 in IJsselstein, the Netherlands. After considering becoming a children’s books author, a Greenpeace activist, or a marine biologist, she finally decided that she wanted to go to Medical School. During Medical School she got excited about infectious diseases, and in her last year of studies she performed a small research project on detection of sepsis pathogens by real-time polymerase chain reaction in collaboration with the paediatrics department of the Wilhelmina Children’s hospital and Medical Microbiology/ Molecular Biology department of the University Medical Centre Utrecht. She also completed an internship in Medical Microbiology in Lyon, France. After graduating in 2011, she first worked for nine months as a clinical doctor at the Wilhelmina Children’s hospital, after which she started her PhD training at the Royal Tropical Institute in November 2012. As a result of the economic crisis, the Royal Tropical Institute disbanded the biomedical department in 2016, after which she finished her PhD work at the Medical Microbiology department of the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. During her PhD she worked on a project to improve maternal and child health by improved detection and treatment of malaria in pregnancy. The project was rolled out in The Gambia, Benin and Burkina Faso. During her PhD training she was able to expand her knowledge of molecular biology, malaria culturing techniques and immunological techniques. She followed courses on parasitology, statistics and several courses on good practice in clinical and laboratory research. She attended multiple (international) conferences, where she presented some of the work in this thesis. Several of the studies included in this thesis are published in international peer reviewed journals. From March 2017, she has started her medical specialization in Medical Microbiology at the UMC Utrecht.
