Can you imagine? I arrived on campus just a few months ago to serve as Vice Chancellor for Development and College Relations. I knew we had great traditions here, but I quickly learned that our fans are unmatched. With the help of our fans, we are now a member of NCAA Division II. Thank you all for helping us achieve this honor…and watch out! NCAA, we are here and ready to compete! I was a college athlete, a wrestler. Wrestling is a hard sport, with few fans, and few accolades, but it taught me that sacrifice and dedication can help you achieve

success beyond sports. With this experience, I fully appreciate the hard work of our student-athletes. In addition to their efforts in sports, our athletes are exceptional scholars, with 83 students earning distinction on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, 74 on the Dean’s List and 17 chosen as D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award Winners. They are truly incomparable and we are so very proud of each of them. There will be many surprises this year. We will win some unexpected victories as we compete in the MEC conference. But we at UVa-Wise will not be surprised by these victories because we know our student-athletes are unequalled.

Update on $10 Million endowed athletic

fundraising campaign The College’s $10 million endowed athletic fundraising campaign to support Highland Cavalier Athletics is in high gear, totaling $8.2 million to date. Endowed funds, which provide an annual stream of income, finance scholarships for student-athletes and on-going annual support for the athletic programs. Although a lofty goal, successful completion of the campaign is a critical step to ensure the viability and success of our 13 sports teams and 200-plus student athletes. Having completed the three year transition and being accepted as full members of the NCAA at the Division II level starting with the current 2015-2016 academic year, the importance of this campaign is immense. Once attained, a $10 million endowment will generate approximately $500,000 in annual support.

Kristen Salyer will enter her fourth season directing the UVa-Wise volleyball program in 2015. Two years ago, the team played its first ever NCAA Division II schedule as part of the Mountain East Conference. The Cavaliers scored a pair of MEC wins, including a 3-0 victory over Concord University at the Prior Convocation Center. In her first season, Salyer’s club posted a 7-25 record in the team’s final season in the Mid-South Conference. The 2013 season was highlighted by a three-match winning streak that featured victories over the University of Pikeville, West Virginia Tech, and Bluefield College. Prior to accepting the position, the fourth year head coach served as an assistant under Kendall Rainey after earning Appalachian Athletic Conference and All-Region XII accolades as a player. Salyer also played an integral role in the school’s most successful volleyball season as she aided UVa-Wise to the Region XII crown and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament in 2007. A Gate City, Virginia native, the coach graduated from UVa-Wise in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. Salyer currently lives in Wise, Virginia.

Coach Spotlight“ I am extremely excited about our upcoming season. We are returning eight players from last year’s team who have been working hard both in the weight room and on the court during the offseason. Our incoming class consists of seven freshman that will bring competitiveness to our practices and elevate our level of preparation. The Mountain East Conference is strong and competitive in volleyball, but with our combination of talent and experience we should be positioned to do well this season.” --Kristen Salyer, Volleyball coach, fourth season

During July, Chancellor Henry was informed via conference call that UVa-Wise had officially successfully completed the transition process from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. This was the final piece of the puzzle of many years of hard and painstaking work by countless members of the institution. The NCAA Division II transition process has been long with myriad hands on deck both within and outside the institution being involved every step of the way. What NCAA Division II membership ultimately means is that UVa-Wise shall operate a well-conducted, comprehensive intercollegiate athletics program, which is based on sound educational principles and practices, and is a proper part of the educational mission of the College and that the educational well-being and academic success of the participating student-athlete is of primary concern. The emphasis for the student-athlete experience in Division II is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. The Division II approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competitions and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning provide Division II student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for their lives ahead. Here are a few highlights to share with you regarding our third year’s work:• The department conducted its first ever comprehensive staff

retreat on August 3rd. We brought numerous speakers across many

departments from the campus to conduct education sessions for the athletics department staff and coaches.

• The department hosted the first annual athletics banquet in its current and completely revamped format. The night was filled with a wonderful meal, inspirational speakers, and deserving award winners. We look forward to hosting the second annual athletics banquet during April 2016.

• The department started the process of adopting and running with the brand new NCAA Division II branding platform, “Make It Yours” into the Cavalier athletic department marketing efforts!!! This will provide UVa-Wise an opportunity to focus our branding efforts alongside our fellow NCAA Division II members and differentiate ourselves from the myriad of other institutions in Virginia that call Divisions I and III their home. So when you tell your friends and family members about UVa-Wise, tell them to simply…“Make UVa-Wise Yours!!!

• The department completed its second year of competition in the Mountain East Conference, with several highlights including the women’s tennis team and men’s cross country teams finishing fourth each in the conference standings.

This coming academic year promises to be very exciting. First, with the help of the athletics media relations department staff members Darrell-Dingus Ely and Luke Bolanos we have completely overhauled the UVa-Wise athletics website. There are cool new features such as a social media wall, a myriad of videos and lastly, beautiful new photos that are constantly being updated. We have also secured Applebee’s as the location for a brand new coach’s show as well. Please join the athletics department on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Norton Applebee’s location for nights full of fun and fantastic interaction with our Cavalier coaches.
