With the summer fast approaching, and the projects making good progress, we decided to squeeze in one more meeting before the summer season. You will see below that we have several projects “in the works” and receive additional requests for help all the time.

The MSOE student chapter will present their recent project success at our meeting. The project included a water tank and conduction line, a water wheel pump and a suspended cable bridge – Wow!

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming meeting and consider helping out on one of the projects. The meeting will provide some additional background on the projects and will allow you to meet up with the project work teams.

Hope to see you there!

Mike Paddock, President

UW – Milwaukee Starts new Student Chapter

Nebaj, Guatemala The UWM students have been very busy getting organized. They have established their chapter on campus and have already identified a project. The hospital in Nebaj currently is lacking wastewater treatment. The hospital is concerned that a typhoid case in the hospital contributed to an epidemic downstream. The UWM team will perform a site assessment and work with the hospital to improve its treatment system. If you are interested in helping out on the mentoring team, please contact John Isleb at [email protected]

Project Updates

La Providencia, Guatemala The MSOE team completed the drinking water project by providing water to the upper level of the community. The project used an existing water wheel to pump the water to an upper distribution tank. The project also required a suspended cable bridge to be built for the water lines crossing of the stream.

Chirramines, Guatemala Pedestrian Bridge

Half of the students from the community school were unable to attend classes during the rainy season due to the stream crossing. In January, a team constructed a cable suspended bridge allowing the community year round access. The only access to the site was via a footpath, making construction and materials delivery a challenge.

Three stream crossings were damaged during Hurricane Stan in October 2005. The Motagua Bridge team visited the sites in January 2006 and provided temporary repair designs. This April, the team will return to Joyabaj and provide a permanent solution to the crossings.

Solar Energy and Water Pump – Santa Apolina Orphanage - Tecpan, Guatemala

The Marquette Chapter had a very successful implementation trip to Guatemala in March. They installed a solar powered grey water pump for the Santa Apolina Orphanage near Tecpan. They are now planning the next phase of the project, expanding the solar energy use for the orphanage. If you are able to lend a hand, please contact Max at [email protected].

Solar Emergí and Water Pump – Casa Nueva Vida Rehabilitation Center – Santa Cruz del Quiche, Guatemala

The Marquette Chapter is also working on a solar powered water pump for the Casa Nueva Vida Rehailitation Center. The center provides treatment of alcoholism and drug dependency for 30 on-site residents. We currently do not have a mentoring team assigned to this project. If you are able to lend a hand, please contact Max at [email protected].

Hydroelectric project – La Providencia, Guatemala

The Marquette Chapter is moving forward with a project that will generate hydroelectric power for the community of La Providencia. The project is in the design phase, with Tom Zalewski being our lead mentor. If you are willing to help out, please contact Tom at [email protected].

Michigan Tech student chapter Honduras A team of 3 students and one faculty member will travel to La Ceiba in late May to perform a site assessment for the El Porvenir Day Care/Nutrition Center. This trip was approved by EWB-USA on March 27. The Day Care/Nutrition Center will be constructed by local NGO, Helping Honduras Kids. The assessment trip will concentrate on obtaining data to enable the team to prepare a site development plan for the facility and will focus on infrastructure, site layout, water treatment, sanitation and power. Fronterizo/Nueva Libertad, Guatemala The team for this project developed a simple design for a hand dug well to provide a year round water supply for this community. Two groups will travel in early April, staggering the schedule to provide a total three-week work period. Two wells will be required to serve the community. They hope to construct at least one and hopefully both of the needed wells.

Mexico The chapter is considering two separate projects based on contacts with the director of the microregions office from SEDESOL and the planning director for the Environmental and Natural Resources Secretary (SEMARNAT). One is the design of a wastewater treatment plant for Alamos, a community of 6,000 people, and the other is performing research to determine the causes of some recent illnesses, thought to be waterborne, and developing a public awareness program in the community of Yavaros (population 2000).

Website Help Needed! Our chapter is sorely in need of a website to help with our communication. If you are interested in helping out to get the website “off the ground”, please contact Angela at [email protected]. I can’t think of a better way to get into the Holiday spirit than having an EWB Chapter meeting! The projects have made good progress, with several implementation trips scheduled for January and designs moving forward, as you will see below.

At the meeting, a debrief will be given from the Regional Conference along with many exciting things happening on the national level. Since we have several new members who are interested in EWB, a quick review of EWB and how we execute projects will be given. We will also review the projects in progress and opportunities for those who are willing to help.

The Executive Committee positions (President, VP, Finance, Membership and TAC chairs) are all up for election. Thanks so much to Angela, Max, Dan and Mark for your past service. If you are interested in serving on the next Executive Committee, please let me know.

I am very interested in hearing from all of you on how we can energize our chapter. So - Please mark your calendars for the upcoming meeting and consider helping out on one of the projects, or committees.

Hope to see you there!

Mike Paddock, President
