UW-Extension Selfie Spotlight Jenny Wehmeier—Family Living Educator
Jenny Wehmeier is the Family Living Educator for the Walworth County UW-Extension office. Jenny’s family is part of Spring Prairie 4-H, and she will be the health aide for Space Camp later this month. Jenny was a high school family and consumer education teacher at Big Foot High School before joining UW-Extension. Jenny is an avid gardener of flowers and vegetables and enjoys home food preservation as one of Walworth County’s Master Food Preservers. She also teaches Raising a Thinking Child (for parents of children age three to seven), Strong Women (cardiovascular and strength training for those over 40), and Get Moving Walworth County. Event Recaps Music Fest The level of creativity was through the roof of the Elkhorn Area High School Auditorium on February 7. There were a total of 20 Music Fest acts performed during the show. Any musical talent was able to be showcased as long as it was family friendly. Six 4-H clubs signed up to participate in Music Fest: Elkhorn, Sugar Creek, Sharon, Lakeland, Lake Beulah, and Walworth. 43 total youth went across the stage, some more than once!
A big “thank you” to the 4-H Arts Council, 4-H members, and volunteers who helped with set-up, lighting, sound, and take down of Music Fest 2016. MCs for the afternoon included: Leo Ehlen, Maya Ehlen, Madelyn Kleist, Kirby Roberts, and Emily Beinert. Our MCs kept the crowd laughing and entertained while announcing each musical group.

New and Upcoming Events Add a little zest to this year’s summer vacation! Plan now to attend 4-H Camp 2016 at Upham Woods in Wisconsin Dells. Walworth County 4-H Camp will be held June 29-July 2 and will include three days and three nights of fun, friends, and high adventure! Camp is open to youth currently in grades 3-8. Cost is $115 per camper after March 28. No camper registrations will be accepted after May 23. The camp
fee includes a t-shirt. Thanks to the Walworth County Junior and Senior Leaders’ Associations for helping to offset costs for this annual program to help make it more affordable for our 4-H families! Camp applications are available at: http://walworth.uwex.edu/4-youth-development/activities-events/. A couple of adult chaperones are still needed for camp week, as well. If you are interested in serving in this capacity, contact Debbie at the UW-Extension office.
4-H Softball It’s that time again to start thinking about your club team for the annual 4-H Softball League. Please designate a coach for your club—this could be a past coach, or someone new. Each club is allowed one Junior team roster and one Senior team roster. Each player will have to sign-up through 4honline.com. Youth participant Information To participate in the 2016 4-H Co-ed Softball season, you need to do three things: 1. Register on 4honline.com—the same website you
registered for 4-H. All youth need to be registered in 4honline.com by April 19. To register: log-on to your 4honline.com account and select “2016 Softball Registration” under the “events” tab.
2. Let your general leader or club softball coach know that you have signed-up.
3. Pay the $5.00 per player fee to your general leader or club softball coach by April 19.
General Leaders and Coaches info If you only have a few interested members, the Softball Commission will assign them to play with another club. Please encourage teams that are small to participate!
Cost for this year’s program will be $15.00 per team. In addition to the $15.00, there is a $5.00 per player charge. (If your club has three or fewer players on the roster, the fee is $5.00 per team plus $5.00 per player charge.) To explain the extra $5.00: a $1.00 accident insurance fee is charged for each player because the softball program is considered league play (making it a higher risk than other projects). $1.00 covers the cost of the official umpires at each game. The final $3.00 is for team t-shirts. Each player will get a t-shirt with a color that represents their team! Payment and registration deadlines will be strictly enforced. No entries will be accepted at the coaches’ meeting. No entries will be accepted without payment. The coaches’ meeting will be held on April 21 at 7:00pm at the Government Center. The coach or a representative for your team must be present at this meeting. Coaches MUST have attended a Youth Protection Workshop. If they have not, the team roster will not be accepted, and the team will be disqualified. The new 4-H Softball Guidelines Book will be handed out and reviewed at this meeting. Other issues will be brought up and discussed by the Softball Commission and coaches. Coaches: please know where your home field will be by the coaches’ meeting. Team t-shirt colors will also be chosen at this meeting.
Drama Fest The 2016 Walworth County 4-H Drama Fest will be held on Sunday, April 24 at Elkhorn Area High School. The event begins at 1:00pm. Drama Fest entry forms are due in the UW-Extension office by 5:00pm on Friday, April 8, 2016. All acts must pre-register using the Drama Fest registration form. Registration for this event is FREE! Refer to the score sheet for guidelines that the judges will be using to critique performances. Please note that there will be a short evaluation that will take place directly after the routine. The judges will give out their full-evaluation score sheets at the NEW! 4-H Drama Fest Awards Ceremony. Directly after the last performance, the judges will gather their thoughts and finish their evaluations for 15 minutes. When the judges are finished, they will give out special awards, such as: “Scenery Crew Award,” “Best Use of Stage,” “Best Script Interpretation,” and “Most In-Character.” Stay until the end of the show to see if YOU or your club won an award!
Communication Arts Fest and Real World Fair Communication Arts Fest on May 10 from 5:30-8:30pm at the Government Center is open to all Walworth County 4-H members, regardless of what projects you’ve enrolled in. Only youth enrolled in the communications and real world fair projects (Communications, Consumer Savvy, Creative Writing, Entrepreneurship, and Speaking) will be eligible for premium money. Entry forms are due May 2 by 5:00pm and are available online. General Guidelines:
Judging for all divisions will be face-to-face.
A maximum of three entries are allowed in Divisions D-F.
A laptop will be available at judging upon request.
Entries that do not meet the entry requirements or are
entered in the wrong class will be judged and will receive a ribbon. However, these entries will be ineligible for fair premium money and special awards.
If you sign up, plan to show up. “No shows” cause major scheduling conflicts at this event.
Speeches, poems, etc. prepared for school, forensics, FFA, etc., are eligible for entry.
All entries must be your work and cannot have been presented at a previous Communication Arts Fest/Real World Fair.
Awards: Each participant will receive a blue, red or white ribbon in his/her class. Grand and reserve champion honors will be selected from eligible project members in all divisions.
Lakeland School Fest
Family Records Training Workshop
The staff at Lakeland School are starting to make plans for the annual Lakeland School Fest, which is set for Saturday, May 7, 2016. School Fest is Lakeland School's only fundraiser and helps to supplement expenses for programs such as prom, graduation, community experiences, and incentives for students. In order for School Fest to be a success, we rely on others to help pass the word about specific needs for the day. Please consider helping out in the following ways. 1. Rummage Sale: Are you spring cleaning? We could use rummage sale items starting Monday, April 4. No
clothing or soft goods such as linens, towels, or blankets will be accepted. 2. Live auction and Basket Bonanza (theme basket raffle): If you have a connection to get donations or if you would like to donate, please contact Dawn McBride or Gabey Davis (live auction) and Tanya Knutson or Brenda Brehm (theme baskets raffle) at 741-4118. Basket Bonanza Raffle is replacing the silent auction. 3. Bake Sale: Love to bake? We could use baked goods for our bake sale. Please drop off at the school the week of May 2-6. 4. Youth Tractor Safety Certification Course The Tractor Certification Course is a 24-hour program designed to teach safety as it relates to driving farm implements on public roads, offering both classroom and hands-on tractor driving experiences, for youth under the age of 16 and over the age of 12. Have questions about how to build your 4-H Records Book and what to put in it? A Family Records Training workshop will be held on May 19 from 6:30-8:00pm in the County Government Center to answer these questions and more! Two fun, fast-paced workshop tracks will be offered: one for youth and the other for adults. The adult track will provide an overview of record book layout, forms, special award opportunities, and tips regarding what to include and not include in your book. The youth track will link project work and record forms and allow for practice filling out a Project
Report Form. Registration is required for this workshop to ensure enough materials. A minimum of eight families are needed for this workshop to be held. Sign-up by 5:00pm on May 16 by calling (262) 741-4951 and sharing your name, phone number, number of adults attending, and number/grades of youth attending. New Family Orientation—Part II The New Family Orientation (Part 2) that was scheduled for Thursday, April 20 from 6-7:30pm is CANCELED.

Fur and Feather Scholarship To be eligible, you must have been actively involved in the Walworth County poultry, rabbit, or goat project for 3 out of the last 5 years of your 4-H/FFA career and be at least a senior in high school or a college freshman with plans to continue your education at a four-year college or a two-year technical school. You may apply for the scholarship twice, but may only receive the scholarship once. Applicant must have a high school graduation date of June of current year or earlier.
Applicant must have been a Walworth County 4-H Horse & Pony Project member for at least two (2) years.
Applicant must be enrolled or planning to enroll as an undergraduate in a university, college, or technical school during the upcoming academic year.
Applicant must have a current grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Selection criteria is located on the application. Applications are due in the Walworth County UW-Extension Office on or before July 1 or they will not be considered. Recipients will be announced during the Opening Ceremony of the 4-H Qualifying Show. Sheila DeGrave Memorial Scholarship To be eligible for this scholarship:
You must have been actively involved in the Walworth County Horse & Pony project, either through 4-H or FFA.
You must be a high school senior with plans to continue your education at a 4-year college (long or short course) or a 2-year technical school. Please include proof of enrollment/acceptance to the school.
Please have the application at the UW-Extension office by 5:00pm on July 1.
Recipients will be announced during the Opening Ceremony of the 4-H Qualifying Show. Earl Cook Memorial Scholarship This $500 scholarship is given to students who are a high school senior or enrolled in a post–high school education program and plan to continue their education in any agricultural field at the college/technical level. Applications are due in the UW-Extension office by July 1. Junior Leaders’ Scholarship This scholarship is sponsored by the Walworth County 4-H Junior Leaders' Association. The recipients of this award will be the applicants who demonstrate the greatest passion for leading by example through their efforts in the Junior Leaders’ Association. Two awards of $500 each will be given annually. You may drop it off in person, mail it, fax it, or scan and email it, but all applications must be received by 5:00pm on June 17 in order to be considered. Hafs 4-H Leadership Award The Hafs 4-H Leadership Award is a University of Wisconsin scholarship to memorialize Oscar W. Hafs’ 65 years leading the Bloomfield Township 4-H Club in Walworth County, WI. One or two awards will be given annually based on available funds. The winner/s will be chosen based on two things: the content and completeness of the application and the quality of a supporting scholarship
interview. Applications must be accompanied by one letter of recommendation from an adult who can attest to your 4-H leadership growth through involvement in the 4-H program. Application and letter of recommendation are due at 5:00pm on July 1. Walworth County Farm Bureau Two high school scholarships in the amount of $500 and one post-grad scholarship in the amount of $1000 each will be given to:
Walworth County high school graduates or students living in Walworth County but graduating from a high school in another county
Post graduates entering their third or fourth year at an accredited college
Post graduates entering their second year at a vocational school or short course
Post graduates must have graduated from a Walworth County high school or lived in Walworth County while attending a high school from another county
Applications are due back at the Farm Bureau office no later than May 1, 2016.

Junior Leaders’ Association The Walworth County Junior Leaders' Association is open to all 4-H members in grades 6-13. The group meets the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00pm in the County Government Center for 75 minutes of fast-paced recreation, business, interactive programs, and refreshments! This is a great way to build your leadership skills while getting to know other youth from across the county and having fun. Come to one meeting, a few meetings, or all of the meetings this spring and summer! The choice is yours! Upcoming meetings are set for April 25 and May 23. The April meeting will feature a guest presentation focused on how to make a strong college application. The May meeting will feature a "Crazy Origami Workshop!"

June Dairy Month 4-H Window Display Contest The theme for this year is: “RED, WHITE, AND MOOOO!” Windows must be completed by May 31, entry form and picture are due to the UW-Extension office by June 3, and judging will take place on June 6. Winners will be announced in the 4-H NewsClip and on the 4-H Website. Window display entry forms, tips, and guidelines were placed in each club’s mailbox. If you need another copy, let Chelsea know. Sheep News The annual Sheep Project Tagging Day will be held on Saturday, May 14, in front of the Sheep Barn at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. Tagging will begin at 7:00am and continue until 10:00am (or whenever the last lamb is tagged). All market lambs must be tagged on this date in order to be shown in the 2016 Walworth County Junior Department Show and sold during the Meat Animal Sale. DNA samples will be pulled from each lamb at tagging. During fair week, random
DNA samples will be pulled for comparison. The Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion market lambs will have mandatory DNA testing. Cost per lamb is $5 and must be paid at tagging. Checks should be made payable to UW-Extension. Anyone interested in entering the lamb carcass show at the fair must also pay their $5 entry fee on tagging day. Checks for carcass entries should be made payable to “Walworth County Fair.” Sheep project members will
receive complete details about Tagging Day by U.S. mail. The information will also be posted after April 6 at: http://walworth.uwex.edu/4-youth-development/projects/sheep-project/. The last Sheep project meeting of the year is set for June 23 at 7:00pm in the Sheep Barn at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. The program will focus on show tips and reminders.

Livestock Workshop Opportunities
The Wisconsin Livestock Premises Registration Act requires anyone who keeps, houses, or co-mingles livestock to register their premises. Premises Registration Act rules include: bovine (bison, cattle); equine (horses, donkeys, mules); goats; poultry (chickens, turkeys, geese, duck, guinea fowl, and squab); captive game birds (pheasants, quail, wild turkeys, migratory wildfowl, pigeons, and exotic birds); sheep; swine (other than wild hogs, but including pot belly pigs); farm-raised deer (elk, moose, caribou, reindeer, and the subfamily musk deer), camelids (llamas, alpacas); ratites (rheas, ostriches, emus, cassowary, kiwi); and fish (aquaculture farm). Rabbits, cats, and dogs are NOT included. To register, go to: http://www.wiid.org. Premise ID numbers are needed for our Walworth County Beef Weigh-in, Swine Tagging paperwork, and Sheep Tagging Day. Please be sure to bring them along with you.
Last MAQA Training Approaching
Nasco (in Fort Atkinson, WI) will be presenting its 30th annual Showing and Grooming Demonstrations on May 7. Experienced showmen will conduct these informal demonstrations, which will touch on animal selection, proper clipping techniques, choice of grooming equipment, and showmanship. Door prizes will be given away, and each person attending will receive a valuable discount coupon for the Nasco Store. Lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is required by May 2 by calling 920-568-5600. When calling, share whether you are
attending just part of the day or all of the day. Here’s the schedule: 8:30-10:00am – Sheep Demonstration 10:15am-Noon—Beef Demonstration Noon-1:00pm—Lunch & Visit Nasco Store 1:15-2:30pm – Dairy Demonstration 2:45-4:00pm—Swine Demonstration These livestock demonstrations count toward county mandatory meeting requirements for some species.
MAQA training is conducted annually to help youth livestock exhibitors learn how to produce a safe, wholesome product. MAQA meets Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) requirements, which are required of all SWINE project members. Consequently, all 4-H SWINE project members must be MAQA certified, either by training or testing, in order to show at the county fair. 4-H members in the BEEF and SHEEP projects are not required to be MAQA certified. However, their participation in training (especially as 8 to11-year-olds) is encouraged and does fulfill mandatory meeting expectations for BEEF and SHEEP. MAQA certification is available to youth, ages 8-11 (by 1/1 of the current 4-H year), by training only. MAQA certification is available to youth 12 years and older (by 1/1 of the current 4-H year) by training or testing.
Participation in training results in one year’s certification, but a youth who successfully passes a certification test will not have to test again until he reaches the next age bracket, or more than 3 years have passed since testing. Testing age brackets are 12-14 (Intermediate) and 15-19 (Advanced). Because testing results in a longer-lasting certification status than training, older members are strongly encouraged to pursue testing. A study guide to prepare for the test is available at http://fyi.uwex.edu/maqa/. Youth can take the test for their level up to 3 times annually in an effort to pass. 4-H & FFA members who reach their 20th birthday while still eligible to show must complete and pass the adult PQA Plus program. All Walworth County testing and training will be done in the County
Government Center in downtown Elkhorn at the times specified below. If you cannot attend one of these sessions, you will need to attend a session being conducted in a nearby county. Those options are available at: http://fyi.uwex.edu/maqa/maqa-meetings/. Thursday, April 7 MAQA Training, 6:00-8:00pm (Grades 3-8) MAQA Testing & Training, 6:00-8:00pm (Grades 9-13) All participants grades 9-13 will test AND train. Those who pass the test will be eligible for multi-year certification depending on their age. To clarify: MAQA training starts at 6:00pm and ends at 8:00pm. Ear tag and DNA bag sales starts at 7:00 and goes until 8:15pm. The start times are deliberately offset.
State Fair Update Junior exhibitors planning to show at the Wisconsin State Fair will need to submit all entry information and fees directly to State Fair either online or via the mail. The local county Extension office will be informed of State Fair youth entries, but will not be involved in the entry process. Junior exhibitors must be members in good standing with an approved youth organization (such as 4-H) by March 1 in order to be eligible to participate in Junior Fair programs. The Junior Show entry deadline for those wishing to enter by submitting a paper entry and pay fees with a check/money order is June 1, 2016. The entry deadline for those wishing to enter online and pay with a credit/debit card is June 1, 2016 at 7:00pm. More news will be coming regarding lodging in the Tommy Thompson Youth Center for both exhibitors and chaperones.
Beef News Dear Project Members and Families, On March 19, we had a very successful Showmanship, Fitting, and Clipping Clinic at the fairgrounds, with 37 members attending. I want to thank Tim and Tammy Atkinson, Melissa Sterken, Savannah Siegler, Mark Polyock, Jeremie Siegler, Jacquie Cates, Rees Beguhl, John Reed, Noah Sybesma, and Tom Cook for helping with the clinic. A special thank you to everyone who brought cattle, and to the Jeff Reed Family, John Reed Family, Ruhl Family, and Cody Miller Family for donating desserts. A big thank you also to Simons Seed Store in Elkhorn for donating numerous show supplies for our drawing and to Kegley Show Supplies for giving us a discount on show supplies and door prizes, along with rope halters for each attending member. And last but not least, I really appreciate how so many of you stayed to help clean up after the clinic. Good Job!
Thanks again, Doc Sterken Beef Project Reminders The 6th Annual Steak Cook Out will take place Wednesday, July 20, at the fairgrounds. Every exhibitor is required to help out at this event. We will also need help on Tuesday for set up. Practice your baking skills to prepare several desserts for the dessert table and bake sale. It is an awesome time, and the money raised benefits the beef project, like the bedding for the beef barn, the clinic in March, and so much more. We are looking forward to working with you at this special event. So start getting the word out to all your friends and relatives to mark their calendars! This will be the fourth year that “The Friends of the Walworth County Junior Beef Project” plan to present a Merit Award to a qualifying member. If you are at least 16 years old as of January 1, 2016, and have been in the project for three years or more, please contact Doc Sterken in order to receive an
application. If you are interested in getting your animals out to some preview shows, there will be one at the Rock County Fairgrounds, another in Lancaster, WI, put on by UW-Platteville, and then the Spring Preview Show at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in June. These are all good shows to help you and your animals prepare for the fair. We will once again participate in the East Troy Fourth of July Parade. The Carcass Show this year will once again feature a live show. If you are participating in the Carcass Show, your steer must be broke to lead, so start working with your animals. Poultry News Project Reminder: All chickens shown at the 2016 Walworth County Fair need to be hatched on or after January 1, 2016. Important dates to remember:
Walworth County Poultry Show: Saturday, September 3, 2016
Fur and Feather Sale (meat-type birds): Monday, September 5, 2016
Last date to change fair entries: August 12, 2016 (see Fair Book)
Health Papers due: Tuesday, August 30, 2016 (when you bring your birds to the fair) Meetings: One meeting is required to show birds at the fair. Poultry meetings are at 7PM on the following dates:
May 19, 2016 at the Sheep Barn: Information on raising ducks and demonstrations on how to wash birds for the fair. ALSO: if you have any questions about fair entries, please bring your questions to this meeting. Poultry committee members will be on hand to help you out.
July 21, 2016: Time and location TBD
August 18, 2016 at the Sheep/Poultry Barns: Cage set up for the fair. IMPORTANT: If you have any questions about what breed or sex your birds are, please bring the birds to the May 19 meeting and a member of the poultry committee will look at them and help you out. It is important to make sure your fair entries are correct, otherwise birds may be disqualified. T-Shirt design contest: any member of the poultry project is encouraged to make a design for the 2016 project t-shirts. Please bring a hard copy of the design to the May 19 meeting. The winner will receive a free t-shirt!
Scale Models
Non-Animal Project Updates
For those signed up in the 4-H Scale Models Project, there will be new rules for 2016. Bob and Keith wrote the rules and will be happy to help you understand the changes. The time to have any rule explained is between now and pre-fair judging. There are at least four more meetings before then. We will be assisting the judge and insisting they follow the rules to the letter of the law, so read them carefully! There will be no exceptions. Have fun building your models, and we hope to see you at one of the
meetings. We are here to help with any problems you’re having. There is also a tool box and selection of paint for you to use. All meetings are held at the Walworth County Fairgrounds between the Activity Center and Wiswell Center. Most meetings are on Saturdays, 10:00am-2:00pm, but there are a couple Wednesday evenings, 6:00-9:00pm. Meeting dates: (Wednesday) April 13, May 21, June 18, July 16, August 20, September 17,
(Wednesday) October 12, November 19, and December 17. Also, those signed up in the 4-H Scale Models Project can get a discount from Hobby Town USA in Lake Geneva. 2016 membership cards are available at the meetings. To get your card, you must show proof of registration in the 4-H Scale Models Project. Your membership discount will run April to April. We hope to see you soon!
Swine News The Walworth County Swine Project will be hosting two more educational project meetings this year. Remember that all Swine exhibitors are required to be MAQA certified AND participate in one educational Swine Project meeting each year. If you haven't met your meeting requirement yet this year, choose from one of the following. These are the final meetings scheduled
for this year. April 18--6:30pm, Walworth County Government Center—Program will feature presentations by both a veterinarian and a feed representative. DNA envelopes and tags will be sold in conjunction with this meeting. Please plan to purchase your tags and envelopes on this evening ONLY if
neither of the alternative sales times (held in conjunction with MAQA training) will work for you. This will be the absolute last opportunity for Swine project members to purchase tags and envelopes. May 18--6:30pm, Walworth County Swine Barn—Program will focus on fair entries and show tips/reminders
Arts and Crafts News Open Art Studio is an opportunity for Arts and Craft project members (3rd grade and up) to bring their ideas, develop and learn new skills and techniques, work on their fair projects, and share their art adventures with other artists and guest artists. Each night will focus on an arts or craft specialty, with a learning project/basic techniques presented and supplies available. Basic supplies such as paper, paint, colored
pencils, glue, scissors, paint shirts, etc. will be available each time, plus specific art supplies for the specialty of the night. Members working on a specific project different from the specialty focus may bring in their own supplies and ideas as well. Drop-ins are welcomed, however all art supplies will not be guaranteed to be available to drop-ins. Open Art Studio is held on the fourth
Tuesday of the month at East Troy Village Hall, 2015 Energy Dr., East Troy, Room A (follow Meeting Room signs to park) from 6:00-7:30pm

Shooting Sports News Join the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Burlington Conservation Club to help promote the safe and wise use of our natural resources. Whether you are a child or adult, come out and participate in: archery, air rifle, trap shooting, hunter
safety, trapping, fishing, camping, backpacking, canine demonstrations, and MORE! Join in on the fun—Saturday, June 25 at the Burlington Conservation Club (6055 Brever Road, Burlington, WI
53105). The event is rain or shine, from 10:00am-3:00pm. Please feel free to bring questions you may have for the Wardens and Rangers.

Project Committee Members—Many hands make light work! If you have a talent to share with our 4-Hers, please consider getting involved! Contact the Extension office or the appropriate committee superintendent to inquire about opportunities coming up.
Youth Project Leaders—If you are in 6th grade or older, you might consider taking the Youth Leadership Project! Challenge yourself and step into a leadership role on the club or county level. You can choose many different types of roles, from helping one-on-one to leading a large group. If you’d like to specialize your leadership efforts in a project area, you can do that, too, by signing up as a Youth Project Leader when you enroll on 4HOnline. Add the Youth Leadership Project or sign up as a Youth Project Leader by 2016 in order to show off your accomplishments at the fair!
Key Leaders—Key leaders are needed in: aerospace, beekeeping, child development, communications, consumer education, mechanical science (tractor/small engines/bicycle/electricity), technology (geospatial/computer science/robotics/wind energy), vet science, and woodworking.
