President’s Report
The 2020/21 season was once again impacted by the Covid 19 pandemic affecting the entire
Australian water polo community. Our busy winter programs were compromised due to pool
closures requiring resourceful redirecting of training activities onto land and beach foreshores.
National Championships for junior state teams usually held in September were cancelled as
to was the Australian Youth Championships held in January. The Australian Water Polo
League reduced to a one-week tournament in April was also cancelled because of Covid 19.
Competitive games against local clubs were the only uncompromised competition remaining
for our nearly 1,200 members to participate and our club had mixed fortunes of success with
these results which are detailed later in this report.
The past season launched the Western Australian Performance Program (WAPP) which is a
partnership between Water Polo Australia (WPA), Water Polo Western Australia (WPWA),
Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) and the University of Western Australia Water
Polo Club to undertake high performance water polo training activities replacing the former
centralised state program delivered by WAIS.
As a result of the introduction of the WAPP, UWA Water Polo Club appointed two head
coaches, Andrei Kovalenko (Men) and Damian Kelly (Women) to co-ordinate the aquatic
training activities of all players in the northern conference wishing to participate in the high-
level training opportunity.
The club continues to evolve into a business with many of the former volunteer roles now
being undertaken by paid employees. Recently the committee employed Dex de Bruin as the
club’s General Manager. Dex will oversee the operations of the club and direct the various
staff appointments to ensure that all members services and amenities are continued to a
satisfactory level. Jackie Vittino has resigned from her position of Flippaball and District
Schools Competition co-ordinator but has remained as the club’s Registrar. A new Flippaball
and DSC co-ordinator is being sought from our community with likely appointments in August
just in time to get the next season’s eager young players introduced to the game. Sonya Orso
did a fabulous job managing the bar as to did Denise Dalton the Uniform Shop administrator.
The committee was successful in obtaining a Club Restricted Liquor Licence entirely the result
of Clare Barber who was able to seek the necessary approvals to get the licence in place. A
big thanks to Clare on this outstanding achievement. The committee is pursuing the
construction of change rooms and toilets at HBF Water Polo Pool. If all approvals are
achieved, members will enjoy a wonderful facility, the envy of the Australian water polo
community, in the near future.
Of great significance I can report the recent announcement of the selection of George and
Andrew Ford in the Australian Senior men’s team (Sharks) to compete at the July, 2021Tokyo
Olympics. This will be George’s second Olympics and Andrew’s first. I am sure all club
members are very proud of having two current Olympians in the club and wish them well
playing in the highest competition for the sport of water polo.
8
The above results are reward for the hard work the committee, coaches and managers have
put into our programs particularly in the face of a once in a lifetime pandemic. Thanks to
everyone involved and I hope all members realise what a wonderful club they have built over
the past 43 years.
Finance
The club has traded profitably this past season posting a net surplus after depreciation of
$216,497. A major component of this profit comes from our junior programs particularly the
Friday night Flippaball and spring/summer camps.
The club had an annual membership revenue of $358,000 which the committee hopes to
maintain next season. A significant cost saving as a result of Covid-19 was pool hire. Venues
West did not implement any increase in pool hire charges and reduced pool hire expenses
was also a Covid-19 saving to the club. Our junior programs and the retention of Juniors
moving into Senior competition has continued this financial year. In addition, the inclusion of
Torpedoes membership and Performance Pathway (Northern Conference) resulted in an extra
$34,673 membership fees.
Sponsors Without the support of our sponsor’s business activities, we would need to raise annual subscription fees considerably. Therefore, a special acknowledgement of our business community is necessary and, where possible, members should engage these businesses in any associated business activities. At the front of this report is a “Sponsors Board” scheduling the club’s sponsors.
Significant Contributions This season’s Best Club Member was awarded to Dex de Bruin, the senior men’s committee delegate, who in his second year on the committee did an outstanding job organising the senior men’s division of the club as well as taking on the task of distributing caps to all 50 teams in the club. Dex’s devotion to the club is second to none and this coming season, Dex has been appointed the General Manager of the club’s administration. Other outstanding efforts worthy of special mention are Clare Barber, the outgoing secretary, Fia Rigo, the club’s Treasurer and Travis Smith as Vice President. Clare, Fia and Travis are all passionate members of this club and worked tirelessly in their fields of responsibility. The entire committee is worthy of mention as each age delegate has an area of our club’s operation in which they are responsible and performed well.

UWA Water Polo Club Development Fund In June 2018, the Club launched the UWA Water Polo Development Fund as a tax-deductible funding through the Australian Sports Foundation. The Australian Sports Foundation provides an established and reputable basis for launching a project and provides the necessary administrative support. Last season funds were donated to purchase of a new BBQ for club use and the purchase of rebound training nets. $1,748.85 was donated in season 20/21. No funds were allocated due to Covid. As at 30 April 2021, donations totalled $18,487. Many thanks to the Donors.
Sports Grants Clare Barber continued to draft grant applications for the Club when relevant funding
opportunities were identified.
An application was submitted to VenuesWest Strategic Asset Management Plan for
redevelopment of the change rooms at the Outdoor Water Polo pool at HBF. Thanks to
Oldfield Knott Architects who provided plans and to Rob Lodge of Capstone Constructions
who provided costings for the proposal. Unfortunately, the $250,000 plans were not accepted
however the project is now well developed.
Celia Hammond, MP Member for Curtin recommended our club’s application for the Federal
Government Stronger Communities grant Round 6. The Club had received funds in an earlier
round for the LED scoreboard. The club was awarded a further $10,000 for new playground
equipment. This equipment will be installed over Winter and provide a great new area for our
Flippaball program and members as well as other users of the outdoor water polo area with
young children. Our thanks to Celia Hammond MP for her support.
UWA Water Polo Club Inc has been nominated by Celia Hammond, member for Curtin, to
apply for a grant of $1090 under the 2021 Volunteer Grants opportunity. Funds were
requested to support our members undertaking first aid training and WPA accreditation
programs.
AWL Torpedoes
The Australian Waterpolo League was once again cancelled as a result of Covid-19 just weeks
before departure to Brisbane for a one-week tournament styled event.
The second straight year of cancellation was an unfortunate occurrence but hopefully the full
normal season of home and away fixtures can recommence in February next year. Both the
men’s and women’s teams look quite competitive, and our strong showing of up-and-coming
junior national squad players should see the Torpedoes represent our club strongly for the
foreseeable future.

UWA Sport As a UWA Affiliated club, our club has a strong relationship with UWA. Pippa Pedley represented the club well as Student representative at Sports Council meetings. The Club participated in The University of WA “O-Day” on 19 February 2021 and received expressions of interest from new students to join the club. Thanks to Clare Barber, Andrew Barber and Pippa Pedley for their assistance with O Day. We acknowledge the continued support of Graham Pratt and Keely Waters from UWA Sport in our dealings with UWA.
Uniform Shop Our Club is well recognised across Australia. Our Uniform Shop Co-Ordinator, Denise Dalton keeps us all looking our best. When UWA teams turn up to compete, it supports the professional image of our club. This season the Club transitioned to our new Kap7 uniform. The old Kukri uniform and Delfina bathers were also considered official Club uniform.
Next season we will be looking at getting all our teams in the new uniform. It is noted that the Club still holds quantities of the old Kukri uniform (in the back shed) which could be difficult to sell, going forward.
Denise has tendered her resignation as Uniform Shop Co-Ordinator. We are very grateful for her service to the Club over the past three seasons.
Clubrooms (+ restricted liquor licence)
Sonya Orso continued her great work as Clubroom Manager. Sonya was present at key times
- Wednesday night Senior State League, Friday Night Flippaball and Saturday morning DSC.
The Clubrooms were also open on Saturday afternoons for A Grade home fixtures and
Monday nights were trialled in Term 1 to a limited audience.
Special thanks to Clare Barber for her determination to see this licence approval to fruition
particularly in the face of a very tough approvals process. We hope Clare will continue to
provide special assistance to the club for projects as this liquor licence application as she has
a real talent for pushing through barriers that most would falter.
Social Media
The Club continues to be active on social media. ‘Likes’ confirm the younger generation’s
support of Instagram and the older generation of Facebook. Followers as at 30 April 2021
are:
Facebook – 777 likes and 912 followers | Instagram – 1035 followers

2020 / 2021 Season
Masters
The UWA Water polo Club nominated 2 Teams in the Master’s Division, The Grizzly Bears in
the 60+ grade and Blacks in the 45+ grade.
The Masters division continues to lack growth due mainly to other life commitments in the 45+
age bracket, not only at UWA, but at other Clubs as well. Several informal discussions took
place during the season amongst leaders from different clubs in order to try to identify areas
that could help in attracting greater numbers going forward, but as yet no plan has been
formalised.
Although battling numbers the Blacks had a very successful season, winning every game and
the Grizzly Bears won their fair share as well.
Similar to last season, games were not recorded and finals not played. As at 30 April no windup
was held or Fairest and Best awards recognised.
The Masters crew enjoyed their Saturday mornings trainings at HBF, especially when they
moved from the dive to water polo pool. These trainings sessions set the Masters up well for
the Bunbury Masters Championships scheduled for May 2021. A welcome return after the
Covid cancellation last year.
Thank you to Jackie Vittino who kept us informed and afloat throughout the season. And thank
you everyone (which was pretty much everyone) who put in time and effort to make the season
a success. As always Masters Polo was an enjoyable and social experience.
A Grade Women
Similar to last year, this season the competition was broken into a 2020 short season for A
Grade Women and then a Challenge Cup competition during term one 2021. The A Grade
competition only included four teams (UWA City Beach, Triton, Melville Marlins and MWPC
Applecross) and started earlier than the regular season. Our team for the year was relatively
young with approximately 80% of the regular team being aged under 21.
Whilst the second half of the season was stronger unfortunately the team finished the season
without a win. Similar to the previous year, finals were played based on ladder position without
a semi-final. Unfortunately, unlike prior years, third and fourth were not able to play for the
bronze medal and that position was decided based on ladder position alone. The team was
coached by Vaughn Thomson and managed by Sascha Phillips. Fairest and best for the
season was won by Pippa Pedley and the highest goal scorer of the season was Bec Liddle.
Julie Tomas
12
Challenge Cup Women
This year due to the COVID-19 changes to the National competition, our national athletes
were able to play in the Challenge Cup. Accordingly, all the teams in the competition were
stronger than prior years. Again, there were four teams (UWA City Beach, Triton, MWPC Gold
and MWPC Green) for a short season of only seven rounds (one bye per team). The team did
well wining four of six games to make the Grand Final. Unfortunately, the team lost to MWPC
Gold to finish the season in second place with the silver medal.
The team was coached by Damian Kelly and managed by Susi Pedley. Fairest and best for
the season was won by Bec Liddle with Pippa Pedley being the highest goal scorer for the
season.
Julie Tomas
A Grade Men
The 2021 A Grade Men’s competition ran from mid-September to mid-December with the very
successful involvement of three UWA teams in the northern conference which is continuing to
evolve in a positive manner over the past 3 years.
The developing depth of the northern conference A Grade competition involving three UWA
teams Rangers (Born 2000 - 2003), City Beach (Born 2000 – 2003), Flotsam (born 99+), and
Triton is an important component to the long-term success of the UWA Torpedoes franchise.
With the quality of the Born 2001, 2002, 2003 coming through, the UWA Torpedoes is in a
great position to continue to develop its players along this pathway. The evolving support and
relationship with Triton is also important to the ongoing success of the UWA Torpedoes.
The Flotsam team made up of the clubs born 1999+ players was led by UWA Torpedoes
Captain Nic Hughes. Tom Sangster was the Fairest and Best winner leading goal scorer with
24 goals while Phil Salter and Nic Hughes scored 24 and 19 goals respectively. Flotsam
finished 2rd in the northern conference and 4th in the state League.
The Rangers finished the northern conference in 4th position with the team badly hit by injury
and player absence. The Rangers were highly competitive early in the season. The leading
Goal scorer was Ben Marshall with 17 goals, while Byron Kelly was the Best and Fairest
winner.
City Beach finished the northern conference in 3rd position and 5th in the State League. Tyler
Fazio was the leading goal scorer with 19 goals, while Lachie Emanuel and Andrew Barber
scored 17 goals each. Lachie Emanuel was the also the Best and Fairest winner.
Damian Kelly
13
Challenge Cup Men This year due to the COVID-19 changes to the National competition, our national athletes were able to play in the Challenge Cup. Seven teams competed (UWA Blue, UWA Green, MWPC Gold, MWPC Green, Triton, Dolphins and Bronze Whalers (40+ Masters team preparing for World Masters Champs ) for a short season of only seven rounds (one bye per team).
The Greens coached by Andrei Kovalenko and managed by Lisa Lilleyman, were a development team, which finished 6th, and the Blues coached by Andrei Kovalenko and managed by Paul Lilleyman finished 2nd earning them a place in the grand final. The Blues lost 7-5 to MWPC Gold in the Grand Final at Bicton Pool on Saturday the 20th of March.
Nic Hughes scored the most votes from the referees across the two teams.
Thank you to all the people who assisted the club with the organisation and administration of
the A Grade and Challenge Cup Seasons. Volunteers are the lifeblood of sport clubs and the
UWA Water Polo Club is no different.
Senior Women The Senior Women’s division of the club continues to grow with fantastic support received from Raul Ricci during pre-season training and on Sunday afternoons throughout the summer season. For the 20/21season, UWA registered a women’s team in every grade except D grade, and two teams in E Grade - which in hindsight the Sapphires would have been better placed in D grade. Hopefully in the 21/22 season we will reach our target of representation in every grade. B Grade Women
To help increase the pool of athletes with the skills and experience to play at A Grade level,
the UWA Rangers regular team this year was primarily comprised of junior players with the
majority born in 2004 and 2005. For many in the team it was their first competition against
skilled senior players and was a great opportunity for the junior athletes to experience tougher
competition than they were used to. The team also had one 2002 playing her first year of
seniors as a “senior” which helped add depth to the team. Towards the end of the season a
couple of the girls from this team were able to play some A Grade games which also provided
the opportunity for other juniors to gain experience at B grade level.
The team was coached by Raul Ricci and managed by Nicole Edwards. The team improved
over the course of the season and worked hard to finish with 2 wins and 2 draws from 16
games. The team finished six (out of six teams) and accordingly did not make finals. Holly
Rose played well through the season to win Fairest and Best for UWA Rangers with Perri
Edwards the highest goal scorer for the season.
14
C Grade Women One team was entered in C Grade, the T-Rex’s. Captained by Alex Hughes, the T-Rex’s had a successful season and it was great to see some of the graduating juniors move into this team. There may be potential for a second C Grade team to be formed for 21/22 if there are further juniors who are moving up to senior ranks and can be retained to play for the club. Congratulations to Alex Hughes taking out the Fairest and Best for the team.
E Grade Women
Two teams were entered for E Grade; Sisters & Sapphires
The Sisters had a good season with a mixture of solid wins and close losses. Most of the
team have now been together for a number of years and enthusiasm for the game and the
clubrooms after the game continues to be strong. Captained this year by Megan Prentice and
Deb Bow who did a great job. Both are locked in for shared captaincy again for 21/22 season.
The Sapphires re-joined the competition after a one-year hiatus. Most players having played
in previous years and also a handful of players who returned to the club who had played some
years earlier. This team was Captained by Georgia Storey. As the season progressed and
the team got to know each other their prowess in the pool was unquestionable. Unfortunately
to some early season losses they did not make finals however they were worthy of finals
placings by the end of season.
For 21/22 there should be consideration given to moving this team up to either C or D grade.
The team has solid players who are quite young and could easily handle the skill levels in
the higher grades.
F Grade Women
The Emeralds team continues to develop their water polo skills especially under the guidance
of Raul Ricci. Their performance throughout the season was hampered by other clubs loading
their teams with junior players &/or players who quite plainly should have been playing up
higher in the grades. This has had a negative impact in terms of enjoyment of the game in
this grade and it would be ideal to see other clubs more accurately register for higher grades
to allow for the lowest grade to get the most out of their learning and development with water
polo. We look forward to seeing what they can do next season. Captained by Jaime Smith
and coached by Raul Ricci, their skills improved out of sight, and they still hold the best
bather’s/merchandise title.

Senior Men
The 2020/1 Senior Men’s Season got underway as planned in Oct 2020: with limited Covid-
19 interruptions due to venue restrictions throughout the 6-month season.
The season commenced with 12 x UWA teams entered in the Men’s Senior State League
competition (compared to 10 teams in the 2019/20 season):
• B-Grade: 3 x UWA teams (out of 6 in the competition).
• C-Grade: 2 x UWA teams (out of 8 in the competition).
• D-Grade: 3 x UWA team (out of 7 in the competition).
• E-Grade: 2 x UWA teams (out of 9 in the competition).
• F-Grade: 2 x UWA teams (out of 14 in the competition). Over 160 men’s players registered for the season in the 5 divisions (B to F Grade). As always, the various divisions were very competitive. It is noted that some clubs in the competition only register teams for the lower E and F-Grade levels. Two new senior men’s teams were created at the club this season; namely the “UWA Tigers” (C-Grade) and the “UWA Ducks” (D-Grade). Semi Finals (SF) and Grand Finals (GF) appearances included the following UWA teams:
• B-Grade - Hellfish (GF), Snakes (GF) and Dropbears (SF).
• C-Grade - Dugongs (SF)
• D-Grade - Bears (GF), Oils (GF) and Ducks (SF)
• E-Grade - Horses (SF) Grand Final winners included:
• B-Grade – Hellfish
• D-Grade – Bears
Three UWA players won the Water Polo WA Association Fairest and Best award for their respective grades:
• Fraser Smith (B-Grade Hellfish)
• Luke Quinlivan (B-Grade Snakes)
• Rob Cullingford (D-Grade Bears)
Club Team of the Year:
Congratulations to the D-Grade Ducks, captained by Andrew Bartlett, for taking out the
O’Keefe Trophy for Greatest Team Contribution in their first year with the Club. It’s great to
see a group of younger guys getting involved in the Men’s Senior State League competition.
Andrew did a super job putting this team together, kitting them out in their special Ducks
bathers and encouraging them to get to the weekly Sunday training sessions. The boys rattled
a few of the other teams in their grade in the first part of the season, but just couldn’t get
16
through the semi-final game to play in their first GF. We are looking forward to seeing the team
develop in future seasons.
This is a demographic in the club that the Committee recognised required development and
we are delighted to see our “young” Seniors engage with the club. As identified in last year’s
Annual report the club must continue to provide a strong retention pathway.
B Grade Men
• UWA Snakes and UWA Hellfish in 1st and 2nd place on log ladder respectively. • UWA Dropbears placed 4th on the ladder. • Hellfish claimed their maiden premiership in the team’s 3-year history. Connor and Fraser
Smith both played their milestone 150th matches for the club. The Hellfish beat ultimate rivals, the UWA Snakes in the GF (the team’s only win over the Snakes all season - after a few close losses).
• F&B Referee Votes: Hamish White (Dropbears - 2nd year in a row); Fraser Smith (Hellfish – also won in 2018/19 and 2019/20) and Luke Quinlivan (Snakes).
• WPWAI F&B: Fraser Smith (Hellfish) on 21 points shares the title with Luke Quinlivan (Snakes) also on 21 points.
C Grade Men
• UWA Dugongs were in 2nd place on the log ladder after the regular rounds. • UWA Tigers finished in 8th position (unfortunately, bottom of the log). • The Dugongs played in the Semi Finals, but didn’t get through to GF. • F&B Referee Votes: Lachlan Pethick (Dugongs - also won it in 2019/20 season) and Luke
Bowles (Tigers).
D Grade Men
• UWA Oils finished top of the ladder in their first season in D Grade (after dropping down from C Grade at the start of the 2020/1 season). The Oils played in the GF against the UWA Bears team.
• UWA Bears placed 2nd on log ladder after regular rounds finished. The UWA Bears went on to win the GF against the UWA Oils team.
• The new UWA Ducks team finished 4th on the log ladder, and then played in the SF against the UWA Oils. Unfortunately, the Ducks team weren’t at full strength and couldn’t pull off a win against a mature, well-oiled UWA Oils team.
• F&B Referee Votes: Rob Cullingford (Bears), Andrew Todd (Ducks) and Todd Pearson (Oils).
• WPWAI F&B: Rob Cullingford (Bears).
E Grade Men
• UWA Growlers placed 5th on the log ladder after the regular rounds. • UWA Horses placed 2nd on the log ladder (up from 6th on table in the previous season).
The Horses couldn’t cross the line in the SF (after a slow start, they tried to pay catch-up polo for the rest of the game).
17
• F&B Referee Votes: Dan Vittino (Growlers - also won this in the previous 2019/20 season), Ben Vittino (Growlers) and Henry Cook (Horse - also won this in the previous 2019/20 season).
F-Grade Men
• UWA Yellers placed 6th on the log ladder (down from 2nd in the previous season). • UWA Blue Bears placed 7th on the log ladder (up from 9th in the previous season). • F&B Referee Votes: Elliot Rowton (Yellers) and Louis Cerdan (Blue Bears).
The Club Bar was well supported at all times during the season by the senior men’s group –
especially on Wednesday nights, but also the café on Saturday mornings after the early
training sessions. There were a few Covid-19 restrictions in place at times (implemented by
Venues West), which did see the closure of the facility at various times during the season.
As a Good Sports Club we are conscious of the community support and benefits of the
relationships developed in this social environment.
Finally, a thank you to all team managers for ensuring team numbers each week. Forfeits are
penalised by WPWAI with fines and this cost is usually passed onto teams. This role and the
prompt score entry following games is therefore crucial.
Dex de Bruin
General Training:
The UWA Aquatic Centre pool was booked for senior “open” trainings on Sunday afternoons
(from 2pm – 5pm) during the summer season and were generally well attended by the men’s
and women’s senior group. A social get-together was also enjoyed most Sundays after the
training.
Wednesday Night Referees:
The Club provides one referee for all State Senior League games. Thank you to our club
members who filled this role and to Jackie Vittino for co-ordinating the roster each week. It is
no easy task with a moving feast of fixture times and last-minute changes. Refereeing is an
unenviable task and with the new rule changes open to much discussion poolside.
Senior Windup
The Senior Windup was held on Saturday 8 May at the Albion Hotel in Cottesloe. Awards were presented and a great time had by all who attended. Thanks to Lisa Lilleyman for organising.

U14 Junior – Boys
For the first time an U12 Boys Division was created in the Junior State League Competition
and the Club entered The Cubs team, a large team of 13 players. The team managed by Kate
Watson and coached on game day by Ollie Sheldrick. The Cubs were also fortunate to be
coached by Damian Kelly and Raul Ricci for training and had a great season finishing second
on the ladder to secure themselves a spot in the grand final. It was a close game with Melville
winning 6-4. A fantastic season had by all boys and Fairest and Best for the Cubs was awarded
to Ryan Wallis with Vlad Belov taking out the Most Improved award.
UWA yielded four teams in the U14 Boys Junior State League Competition for the 2020/21
Season. This year the Club entered three teams in the A division; The Bears, The Blues and
The Green teams and The White team in the B Division. This year coach Damian Kelly
decided to enter two evenly matched 2007 born teams, being The Bears and The Blues and
a strong 2008 born Green team in the A division. The White team entered in B Division was
19
also 2008 born players. The boys were fortunate to be coached by Damien Kelly and Raul
Ricci and then Andrei Kovalenko in the second half of the season.
The U14 A division consisted of three UWA teams and two Melville teams so there was a
fierce rivalry between the Clubs for the 2020/21 season.
The Bears were managed by Lou Nichols and coached on game day by Matt George and
finished the season fourth on the ladder with 3 wins and a draw. This put them up against top
placed Melville Sharks in the semi where they were beaten convincingly 15-3. In his first ever
season of Water Polo, Charlie Cotter took out Fairest and Best award with a mention also to
go Ben Marris who contributed strongly each week. Most Improved was awarded to George
Hodgson.
The Blue team was managed by Melinda Braddock and Quentin Megson was the coach for
game day. The Blue team completed the season with 6 wins and a draw to finish second on
the ladder and set themselves up to play the third placed, Melville Saints. The game was a
nail biter with the Blue team going down in a penalty shootout with the final score being 11-
12. Fairest and Best for the season was awarded to Luke Megson and Most Improved to Salie
Du Preez.
The Green team was managed this year by Penny Regan and coached for the first half of the
season by Damian Kelly and the second half of the season by Cliff Woods. Being the youngest
in the A division and with only 8 players for most of the season the Green team faced the
challenge each week and had one win for the season and some very competitive games. It
was encouraging to see the team improving so much over the season and they will certainly
be the ones to watch next year. Fairest and Best was awarded to Sam Regan and Most
Improved to Ivan Zorotovic.
The White team competed in the U14B Division and was managed by Liesl De Vries and
coached by Charlie George and Ben Howie. The White team, with only 8 players had a
fantastic season and finished undefeated on top of the ladder winning all 10 games. This put
them in a strong position for the finals. They played fourth placed Phantom Devils in the Semi
Finals to win 9-2 to secure a spot in the Grand Final against Triton. The game which was
action packed with the UWA White team winning 4-3 to be Premiers for the 2020/21 season.
Fairest and Best was jointly awarded to Zeph O’Brien and Archie Ryan with Jacques De Vries
taking out the Most Improved player.
Ben Marris was awarded the UWA U14 Rising Star whilst also having s strong season with
The Bears team.
Thanks goes to all the parents for their dedication to the club and the sport assisting each
week with either the coaching, managing, scoring and time keeping. It was also great to see
such strong support for the Club with both parents and boys keenly and willingly volunteering
their time on Friday nights to support the Flippaball competition by umpiring. cooking and
serving food. All efforts are very much appreciated.

U16 Junior – Boys
The Club entered four teams in the 16&U Boys Junior State Competition for the 2020/21
season. The Bears, Blues & Gold competed in the A Division and the White team in the B
Division. The boys were fortunate to have the assistance from some fantastic volunteer
coaches for the U16 teams with help from Byron Kelly, Andrew Barber, Parsa Vahdani &
Nathan Philips.
This season the Bears team consisted of only 2005 born players. They had a very strong year,
with only one defeat in the regular season. The Bears progressed to the finals; however, they
went down to the Melville Sharks in a close game. The Bears team was coached my Byon
Kelly and managed by Lisa Lilleyman.
The Blues team consisted of only 2006 born players. They finished 3rd on the ladder with 9
wins and 5 losses. They really tried hard for a UWA derby final, but went down by one goal to
the Melville Sharks team in the semi. The Blues teams was coached by Andrew Barber and
manager by Flick Handley.
The Gold team consisted of born 2005 & 2006 players. They had a challenging year however
developed well throughout the season and had a number of very close games. The Gold team
was coached by Parsa Vahdani and managed by Dex DeBruin.
The White team consisted of 2005 & 2006 players. The team has a really dominant season
with 12 wins and 2 losses. The White team went on to a convincing win in the final against the
Newman Mantas teams.
Congratulations to fairest and best for each team
• Bears Owen Lilleyman
• Blues Ethan Kelly

A special thanks to all of the volunteer coaches and managers for helping the teams again
this year. Your support for the junior program is really appreciated.

Despite our best efforts we were not able to send any teams to the AYC tournament in
Brisbane. Let’s hope that this is the last AYC that is impacted by COVID border closures.

U18 Junior – Boys
The Club entered two teams in the 18&U Boys A Division Junior State Competition for the
2020/21 season. The Blues coached by Oliver Davies and the Greens initially coached by Tas
Williams for the first term, then a few guest coaches.
The Blues won A Division in a thrilling final which went into penalty shoot-out against Melville
Sharks. There were undefeated throughout the season. Congratulations to the boys and Oliver
Davies on a very successful season. Thank you to Rob Lodge for managing the team.
The Greens had a challenging season with multiple coaches and a few wins, they gained
momentum in the second half of the season and can be commended on their never give up
attitude and teamwork especially when no coach was available.
Congratulations to fairest and best for each team
• Blues Tyler Fazio
• Greens Rory Dalton
Tyler Fazio was also awarded the fairest and best for the U18 State League competition as
voted by the WPWA referees.
Thank you to all parents for helping with the scoring throughout the season. Your support is
much appreciated.

U14 Girls Rising Star – Emily Murdoch
The Covid outbreak in Queensland in January meant that our girls did not have the opportunity to take part in the Australian Youth Championships this season, with the competition being called off by Water Polo Australia. These championships offer our players the opportunity to undergo huge personal development, gain a greater understanding of the game and offer challenging competition which isn’t always available locally.
It is said that we all experience 10 defining moments, make 7 critical choices and have 5 pivotal people in our lives. Our U12 girls may have ticked a few of these experiences when they chose to play water polo in the inaugural season of the U12 division of the 2020/21 of Junior State League. It was a privilege to watch these young girls grow and develop under the watchful eye of their coach, “Symo”. Their commitment to training, enthusiasm and tenacity during games saw the UWA Cubs play Melville Mermaids in the Grand Finals where they won their first Silver medal.
The 2020/21 season continued to be a challenge for our U14 girls, with a shortage of teams competing in the A grade; offering little by way of diversity which makes for a relatively lack lustre competition. Our Blues & Golds remained pretty evenly matched throughout the season and the semi-finals gave us an exciting UWA derby the outcome of which saw the Golds play Melville Marlins in the Grand Finals, coming away with a Silver.
The U14 B competition was a little more evenly contested with 7 teams competing for a place in the Grand Finals. Our relatively inexperienced Whites, many of which were playing competitive polo for the first time, had a strong first season retaining their spot in the top 2 all season. Our Greens joined this competition late, having been moved down from the A grade, but quickly began to dominate in the pool. Semi-finals resulted in another UWA derby with Greens winning that game. A tough game against the Newman Seals saw our Greens take the Silver.
The girls were able to take the mid-season change to coaches in their stride and used the opportunity to learn new things from “Damo”. The “vibe” remained positive and growth in girl’s confidence was clearly evident at the end of the season.
The marked increase in the U14 girl’s numbers over the last few seasons, presents its own set of challenges. The Club is looking at options which allow us to keep all our junior girls engaged at a level where they are comfortable. We are working closely with WPWA to ensure that the current JSL format is reviewed so that our girls are given the best opportunity possible to succeed in whichever pathway they choose.
A huge thank you to all parents who assisted with the BBQ on Friday nights, supported our girl’s poolside at every game, diligently did their time keeping/scoring duties, who ensured their daughter got to training and those who managed a team.
To are awesome Torpedoes players who helped coach and mentor our girls – thank you! You were outstanding in every sense and the girls were lucky to have you in their corner.
Lastly, it has been an honour to once again represent the U12 &Uu14 girls at committee level, and look forward to the 2021/22 season.

Most improved U16 player awards: Born ’05 winner, Katie Maris, Born ‘06 winner, Emily Taylor.
Most Outstanding U16 female player: Amelia Taboni. Congratulations also to Amelia for winning the State U16G Fairest and Best player award.
Vaughn Thompson started as head of the ladies coaching program assisted by Sam Shead. From January, Damian Kelly took over assisted by Raul Ricci. Thank you very much to the whole 2020/21 coaching team. Covid affected our season with pools being shut at times and pool space, that we were given, being shared between all teams at times. Nevertheless, our girls continued to come out to train and improve over the season. Well done to both teams for reaching the semi-finals of U16G JSL, unfortunately they had to play each other meaning only 1 could make the finals. The older Blue team made it to the Grand Final but sadly, were beaten by a very strong Melville Marlin side.
With Covid still causing lockdowns and Western Australia’s strict policy on borders, AYC for WA teams was deemed too risky so instead of our usual intensive training programs run over the Christmas holidays Raul Ricci ran a 2 weeklong camp.
Congratulations to Katie Maris, Amelia Taboni and Gabi Sayer for being selected to attend the Talent ID camp in Brisbane. Unfortunately, due to border closures, this was cancelled. These girls were also selected, along with Lily Quinlivan, to join a combined U18 team to attend AYC.
Thank you to all our girls who have helped the club out this season by either coaching Flippaball and DSC teams, refereeing or attending busy bees. This group of girls are always willing to help with a smile and are very supportive not only of their teammates but to others around them. The club should be very proud of them.
Finally, a huge thank you to Jen Taboni and Melissa Haynes for being fantastic and reliable managers. They kept their teams organised and on time with caps and balls and table officials at the ready.

U18 Junior – Girls
UWA entered two teams in the U18 girls A Grade competition for the season. Unfortunately,
there were not enough athletes and teams for a B Grade competition this season. This year
there were six teams in the A Grade competition whereas in the prior year there were five A
Grade teams and four B Grade teams.
UWA Blue comprised five 2003 girls and five 2004 girls and UWA Green started the season
with one 2003 girl, five 2004 girls and five 2005/6 girls. The younger girls did very well over
the season playing their U18 game after having first played an U16 game. Alas, due to a
COVID-19 lockdown and subsequent restrictions all junior teams were unable to play the first
two games of the second half of the season (Rounds 10 and 11).
UWA Blue won 11 of 13 games in the regular season to finish on top of the ladder. They then
played Melville Mermaids in the Semi Final to advance to the Grand Final. Sadly, they lost the
Grand Final to Triton in a nail biting final (3-2) to finish with the silver medal for the season.
The team was coached by Vaughn Thomson (2000) and Damian Kelly (2001) and was
managed by Julie Tomas. The Fairest and Best for the season was the goal keeper, Holly
Greville, who had an excellent season. The higher goal scorer for the season was Harper
Phillips.
UWA Green was coached by Raul Ricci and managed by Michelle Sayer. The team improved
over the season and finished the season with 3 wins and 1 draw from the regular season and
finished fifth on the ladder. WPWA provided an opportunity for the teams finishing 4th-6th on
the ladder to compete for the U18 A Grade “Plate”. Our UWA Green team had a great finish
to the season winning the semi-final of the Plate competition and then in a fabulous game beat
Melville Mermaids 6-4 in the Grand Final of the U18 A Grade Plate final. The Fairest and Best
for the season was Daisy Morse who showed her skills by playing both in goals and field during
the season, with Amelia Taboni, the highest goal scorer for the season.
We were very disappointed that after a lot of planning we were unable to send a U18s team
to the postponed Australian Youth Water Polo Championships due to be held in Brisbane in
April 2021 following border closures and the subsequent cancellation of the competition due
to another COVID-19 outbreak. Many of the girls impacted had also missed out on the planned
club trip to Pan Pacs in New Zealand in July 2020 again due to COVID-19 and the cancellation
of the competition.
Our best wishes go with all the 2003 girls as they move into the senior competitions.

Friday Night Flippaball
Despite the abrupt end to season 19/20 our Flippaball program grew in season 20/21 with a
new record of 50 teams.
2015/16 205
2016/17 260
2017/18 308
2018/19 389
2019/20 430
2020/21 484
Flippaball continues to be a hugely popular night out for young families. For the third year
running and thanks to the Berti family from the Re Store in Northbridge, the food options have
been outstanding. Club Manager Sonya Orso continued her great work from the previous
season and was ably assisted by Andy Barber in Term 4 and Will Hogan in Term 1.
BBQ and refereeing duties were again shared across the entire Junior community, giving U14,
16 &18 Boys and Girls an opportunity to referee, while their parents assisted with food service.
The small goals, four field configuration and size 3 balls worked well. The old clock was used.
4 x 5-minute quarters were applied to the early games followed by 4 x 6-minute quarters for
the 7pm and 7.30pm games.
Six 30-minute time slots operated as follows –
5pm Year 2/3 8 teams, 1 bye
5.30pm Year 2/3 4 teams
Year 4 4 teams
6.00pm Year 4 8 teams, 1 bye
6.30pm Year 4 2 teams
Year 5/6 6 girls teams ,
7.00pm Year 5/6 8 boys / mixed teams
7.30pm Year 5/6 8 boys / mixed teams
Total 50 teams
Fixtures were complex and teams did a fantastic job of arriving at the correct time, and the
correct pool each week.
The Friday 5 February fixture was cancelled due to the Covid lockdown in the Perth
metropolitan area. Restrictions on numbers at HBF Stadium meant we also had to cancel
Flippaball on Friday 12 February; however, this game was re-scheduled to the Friday of the
long weekend – Friday 26 February 2021.
The Flippaball Presentation and Windup was held on Friday 26 March 2021 and was very well
attended. All 50 teams participated, including the ‘bye’ teams in a one off 4.30pm game.
Novelties (Kap 7 squeeze balls) were distributed to all registered players.
26
Huge thanks to all the team coaches and managers, in particular the UWA Juniors who took
on volunteer coaching positions. Clubs are about community, and this is another great
example of community service and the never-ending support that our Club receives from its
members.
Special thanks to Max Clarke for his work supervising the set up and pack down of the
flippaball pool all season.
Flippaswim
Flippaswim training sessions were available on Monday and Wednesday afternoons (4pm to
5pm at HBF) during Term 4 and Term 1. In a break from tradition DSC Flippaswim moved
from Fridays. Low numbers of girl’s regos meant the DSC girls were incorporated in to JSL
trainings. DSC boys trained with JSL U12/14B boys on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Registrations were as follows: (111 in 17/18, 141 in 18/19, 171 in 19/20)
Mondays 4pm to 5pm 64
Wednesdays 4pm to 5pm 68
DSC (Tue or Thurs) 4pm to 5pm 35
DSC (additional Tue or Thurs) 4
Total 171
Damian Kelly was joined by Raul Ricci and Andrew Barber every Monday and Wednesday. Bec Gibb and Glenda Morgan assisted on Mondays. Additional Wednesday staff were Claire Whitaker and Cade Logan in Term 4 and Millie Peterson in Term 1. On Tuesday Will Marshall helped out Damian Kelly and on Thursday Campbell McAullay assisted. As per previous seasons attendance dropped off as the season went on, particularly in Term 1.
District School Competition (DSC)
This season there were 24 teams in the DSC as follows –
8.40am Year 5/6 Boys x 6
9.20am Year 6/7 Girls x 4
10.00am Year 6/7 Girls x 2
Year 7/8 Boys x 2
10.40am Year 7/8 Boys x 4
11.20am Year 7/8 Boys x 2
Year 8-10 Girls x 2
12.00 noon Year 8-10 Girls x 2
The 8.40am games were played in third a pool with size 3 ball and small goals.
27
Games at 9.20am and later were played in half pool format with size 4 ball.
The referees were responsible for the changed pool configuration.
As per previous seasons DSC Girls and Boys were identified and upgraded to the Junior State
League program as the season went on. By the end of the season 184 pure DSC registrations
were recorded.
The 5/6 Boys competition had a healthy six teams competing each week. As expected, the
Year 6 teams dominated and the DSC teams assisted by JSL players were the strongest.
This season there was no interest from Year 5 girl’s teams, so the girls age group changed to
Year 6/7.
In the Year 7/8 Boys Competition we were fortunate to be able to split the Competition in to
two grades once all teams had played each other, ensuring a healthier competition.
Two Year 9 girl’s teams from last season were keen to return, so it was great having the
older age group of girls extend to year 10s. Despite there being only four teams, this age
group was extremely competitive.
Key popular points of the DSC are the relaxed atmosphere and the enjoyment participants
get from playing social water polo with their friends.
We were again fortunate to have Junior State League players take on coaching roles on
Saturday mornings. This is essential for the success of the Competition given the lack of water
polo playing parents available to coach.
Semi Finals took place on the 13th of March and Grand Finals on the 20th March.
The following teams won their age groups.
Girls
Year 6/7 Sun Bears coached by Andy Carr (penalty shoot-out)
Year 8-10 SMAGS10 coached by Dev Gilmour
Boys
Year 5/6 Drop Bears coached by Sam Regan
Year 7+ A Div Scotch Fingers coached by Katie Marris
Year 7+ B Div Barefoot Boys coached by Perri and Maisie Edwards
On grand final day, all players received a free sausage sizzle and soft drink and coaches were
invited to present a UWA cap to the player of their choice.
28
A cap was also presented to coach Josh Shurmer of the Hawkes. The Hawkes had limited
experience in water polo, made up of largely boys who could swim that went to Bob Hawke
College. Josh was an exceptional role model.
Thanks to regular referees Scott and Owen Lilleyman, Andrew Barber, Parsa Vahdani and
Sophie Johnson. Mention should also be made of the Junior Community Referee
accreditation program overseen by Club Secretary Clare Barber. The DSC provided the
perfect opportunity for our up-and-coming referees to shadow and be assessed.
Final acknowledgement to Sonya, Gabi Sayer and Will Hart in the Café and Jett Braddock and
Max Clare on BBQ.

Treasurer’s Report
I am pleased to present the Club’s Financial Report for the year ended 30th April 2021.
This year’s result shows a Net Operating Surplus of $221,200 before depreciation (2020
$98,257) and a Net Operating Surplus after depreciation of $216,497 (2020 $88,781).
Cash Reserves at the end of 2021 year were $433,369 up from the previous year (2020:
$194,733).
Please refer to the Club’s Annual Financial Report for full details. These will be available at
the AGM.
A summary of the results is detailed below.
The club recorded the following movements in the major revenue streams.
1. Membership, Camps, DSC & Flippaswim, revenue increased to $501,745 an increase of
$72,847 from 2020.
2. Bar revenue increased to $85,516 an increase of $20,403 from 2020.
3. Sponsorship revenue increased this year to $18,976 up from $14,089 in 2020. The Club
continues its sponsorship drive through the playing membership. On behalf of all the
Committee, I would like to thank all our Sponsors for their vital and continued support of
the club.
4. The Covid 19 pandemic allowed us to receive assistance in the form of Jobkeeper for our
Head Coach and we also received ATO Cash Flow boosts, totalling $23,500.
During the year, the expenses of the club overall decreased. The major decreases were:
1. Coaching – The combined coaching and refereeing costs were $119,237 a decrease from
$161,605 in 2020. This resulted due to forced COVID lockdowns during the year.
2. Pool Hire and Gate Entry – A decrease of $13,239 from 2020 because of fewer pool
bookings and COVID savings passed onto to the club from Venues West HBF Stadium.
The major cost to increase during the year was the payroll costs associated to the
Administrator totalling $25,882. This cost was being covered by Peter Hughes’s office in
previous years. Some of the Administrator duties performed by the Jackie will be transferred
to Dex de Bruin as General Manager in 21/22.
The continued support from our committee members and support volunteers is greatly
appreciated.
30
Special thanks go to the following people:
• Clare Barber continued to be an invaluable resource for our club who continually stepped
in to assist the committee with many different tasks. Clare retired this year at the end of
March 2021 and has now handed over many of her tasks to the newly appointed General
Manager Dex De Bruin. We hope to see Clare on pool side next season enjoying being a
spectator.
• VP - Travis Smith has stepped in this year and assisted with getting the Performance
Pathway for the Norther Conference, off the ground. He continues to work closely with all
stakeholders in order to ensure that we are achieving the goals that were set for the
success of this high-performance program.
• Torpedoes – Michael Pedley and Steven Kyriakou came onto the committee this year as
the delegates for the AWL Torpedoes. I thank Michael and Steven for their assistance in
organising and reporting to the committee. Unfortunately, the AWL competition was
cancelled due to COVID Lockdown in Brisbane.
• Café – Sonya Orso continued in her role as Café Manager and offered quality food and
beverage offerings to our members. We were opened for service on Monday nights,
Wednesday nights and Saturdays this year.
• Uniform Online Shop – A big thank you to Denise for managing the Kukri Clothing Store
and the sale of the bathers through our own shop and assisting in transferring over to our
new supplier KAP7 for all our uniform requirements during this year. She has retired from
this position at the closing of this year.
Finally, my sincere thanks go to Peter Hughes, who continues to be the driving force
behind the club’s success. I look forward to a successful 2021/22.
