Many people in our community are in greater need than ever before and with your support we can continue to do more. United Way is advancing the common good and creating stronger communities by focusing on the building blocks for a better life – EDUCATION, INCOME and HEALTH. By addressing the root cause of community problems in these areas, we can get real results.

United Way of East Central Iowa does this by: Helping children START STRONG and be ready for school; helping youth GROW STRONG and achieve their potential; and helping families STAY STRONG by becoming financially stable and independent and improving people’s health.

THE LIVE UNITED MOVEMENT

Working with our community partners, United Way has set these five-year community goals to make a difference in east central Iowa:• Increase the number of low-income children ready for school by 50%• Increase the number of low-income youth with 21st Century skills by 25%• Increase the number of financially stable households by 15%• Increase healthy choices by 10%• Increase by 25% the number of older adults who are able to meet their daily living needs

It takes everyone in the community working together to be part of the change. Together, we can accomplish more than we can do alone. That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED!

Our 2009 campaign marked the third year in a row that UWECI raised over $10 million. Even with severe economic challenges, the generosity and dedication to social responsibility of east central Iowans was inspiring. We fell less than 1% short of the previous year’s record total, raising $10,330,000.

Pacesetter companies, Rockwell Collins and GE Capital, were outstanding as expected. Rockwell Collins again surpassed $2.1 million and GE Capital increased their giving by 32% to over $145,000. They combined to contribute nearly $2.3 million.

Our campaign success was also helped significantly by a $100,000 Challenge Grant, made possible by the generosity of John and Dyan Smith. The grant matched dollar for dollar those individuals who increased their giving to obtain the new entry level of $1,250 in United Way’s T.M. Sinclair Society.

Leadership Giving continued to thrive and is integral to our success. Leadership givers account for 67% of all employee giving.

The Women’s Leadership Initiative increased its membership to 187 and provided $47,000 for prescription assistance and emergency dental care for vulnerable women in our community, in partnership with the Community Health Free Clinic.

When you total campaign contributions, in-kind contributions, volunteer hours worked and sponsorship dollars received, the total community investment in United Way of East Central Iowa exceeds $12.5 million.

We have held steady in a time when many nonprofit organizations have seen a downturn in their fundraising. Thanks to the hard work of many and the continued support of thousands of business and individual donors, we are continuing to advance the common good and help those most in need!

FIVE WAYS TO MOBILIZE AMERICA

1. TURN OUTWARD TOWARD THE COMMUNITYToo many volunteer, civic engagement and other well-intentioned community efforts are done with an organization-first approach – a narrow view that often starts and ends with fulfilling one’s own programmatic goals, strategic plans, and metrics for community involvement. To have a fighting chance for success, we must make the community the reference point, not our individual programs.

2. FOCUS ON PEOPLE’S SHARED ASPIRATIONS, NOT THE COMMUNITY’S PROBLEMSPeople feel the full weight of their individual and community “problems.” And yet, when asked about their aspirations, they are quick to offer an alternate view of what can be. People must come together to define their shared aspirations, for only then can we find points of common action. Our shared aspirations are the starting point.

3. GET PEOPLE DOING ACTUAL WORK TOGETHER People don’t simply want to volunteer for an hour here and there. Instead, they’re yearning for the opportunity to build deep and lasting relationships and be part of something larger. Thus, more “plug-and-play” volunteer programs won’t do the trick this time; people want to roll-up their sleeves and work together – and over time. They want to do something real.

4. MOVE IN A COMMON DIRECTION Too often volunteer and community efforts are based on episodic, ad hoc activities where the emphasis is on making the individual volunteer “feel good.” Simply calling on people to volunteer will not help people rebuild their communities. We must create, together, a common sense of direction to guide what we do, and to make sure what we’re doing adds up to something real.

5. TELL STORIES OF SELF-TRUST AND HOPE In many communities, the common narrative is one of decline, diminished hopes, even defeat. More business-as-usual storytelling will only dampen people’s spirits. While those stories “seem” real – people know better – and feel their reality is being manipulated. Instead, we must tell authentic stories of change, ones that reflect our trials and errors, successes and failures, and lessons learned. These stories, when real, help us restore our faith in one another and in our individual and collective ability to build stronger communities.
