Preface Every Drop Counts
---Author Unknown If each grain of sand were to say:
"One grain does not make a mountain." There would be no land.
If each drop of water were to say: "One drop does not make an ocean."
There would be no sea. If each note of music were to say:
"A note does not make a symphony." There would be no melody.
With a poem at the beginning, we try to illustrate what is really important for us in
the past three months. In the short three months, we may not have grasped
everything systematically, but every drop counts.
We believe that our mind is just like a time capsule. Somewhere uncharted areas of
our brain resides the home of our memories. They can sleep and lie dormant for
years, and may only pop up—seemingly from nowhere—when the time is right. This
piece of information may be something we have taken from class at the Faculty of
Education or perhaps a shared experience with a professor, or even can be inspired
from a one-week lecture.
However deep one may have buried his or her memory capsule, there must be a
shining period that he or she treasures a lot and will never forget. A one month
practicum is something we will always treasure. A valuable memory that we will
pass on to those we will forever be thankful for — our charming principals,
considerate teachers, and lovely and friendly students.
Old wisdom tells us “learning lies in the playing”. Through the many experiences
shared with our Alumni group at the University of Windsor, and our new friends
here in Canada, we have had so much fun doing so many simple things.
In this newsletter, we hope to show you how much you have offered us and how
much we appreciate what we have learned from you. Just as Yoko Ono said, “Every
drop in my memory counts”.

Human Development and Differentiated Instruction Professor Starr Liz’s course provides an introduction to the field of special education within the context of child development and Educational Psychology. We learned a lot of specific knowledge about special education. Our group, here from China, has unanimously decided; when we return home, that we must focus more on special education. We are ready to help those with special needs.
Professor Marc Crundwell’s course is an introduction to concepts, principles and theories of learning and human development. Mr. Marc Crundwell makes us associate with all aspects for teaching. Professor Cam Cobb is a great professor with rich
professional knowledge and effective teaching methods. He always makes students explore the issues themselves so that they can learn on the way. What impressed us most was that with his direction we made almost 30 burning questions about IEP such as “How effective will an IEP be if the teacher feels ill-equipped to prepare, develop and implement that plan?” “What constitutes a poor IEP and how do you use the resources available to you to improve it?”
Education Foundations and Instructional Design
Professor Glenn Rideout In Professor Glenn Rideout class, we explored a range of education philosophies. We know more approaches to classroom management and motivation to study. We realized that professional learning is very significant and important for teachers’ development.
Educational Foundations and Instructional Design Professor Daniel
Yvette Professor Daniel Yvette showed us her enthusiasm, passion and responsibility toward education. What she gave us was the new concept and insight into education. Many “brain storm”, discussions and case studies were used in class, which really enlightened us. This course developed our knowledge about how to be a teacher and opened a window of western education concept for us.
Course Introduction
2
1
Topics in Elementary Professor John Zalger This course is an introduction to the growth, development, and learning of children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 with an emphasis on instructional practices and curriculum panning. During the past 6 weeks, we have learned how to use apple computers to make our power point attractive and how to combine knowledge with technology better.
Topics in Elementary Professor Paresh Pandya This course instructed by Professor Paresh Pandya explores the growth, development and learning of children from Primary to
Junior. The course provides opportunities for Teacher Candidates to critically reflect on key environmental concepts. We really learned a lot about environmental issues from Professor Paresh Pandya and this course.
Supporting EAL Professor Shijing Xu We quite appreciate what
Professor Shijing Xu has done for
us and in her Supporting EAL class, we learned how to
respect cultural diversity in one class especially in Canada---a
multilingual and multicultural country. We have been
involved in the class and exchanged our experiences with
foreigners. Lots of new ideas about how to teach language
have been kept in our mind.
Learning with Technologies Professor Zuochen Zhang Professor Zuochen Zhang had a typical style of Chinese
professor. He was experienced both in middle school
teaching and university teaching. His international
background made us easy to communicate with him and be
involved in his class. Professor Zuochen Zhang’s class was
well planned, and he explained the teaching contents clearly
in the class. We learned a lot of useful softwares and digital teaching technologies in his class
which would make a big difference to Chinese class teaching when we bring these back to
China.
Professor Michele Tarailo In Professor Tarailo’s Art class, I received an integrate understanding of the visual art curriculum
3
1
requirements in Ontario. She taught us how to construct lesson plans in detail, which is very significant and meaningful to my future teaching experience.
——陈辉(Hui Chen)
Visual Art Professor Wayne Tousignant This course emphasizes on instructional practices and curriculum planning for teaching visual art. As for me, the most important thing I learnt was how to plan, present and evaluate a visual arts program. He taught us how to teach art history in various forms. I was very intrigued in the Picasso Project. ——陈辉(Hui Chen)
Geography Professor Vince Sacilotto Professor Vince is a considerate professor who always organized different kinds of
interesting and significant activities. I realized everyone can be an ice breaker when you asked every student to organize an ice break activity. Thank you for providing me with an opportunity to give lesson by myself and introduce something about myself and my major. I learned to make a lesson plan and I can make it now. I acquired teaching strategies, teaching methods and teaching philosophy, which I will apply to my future teaching.
——吴芬芬(Fenfen Wu)
Issues In Issues classes, we have learnt how to reflect critically and analysis educational issues. We know more about Canadian Education issues and always thought some Chinese issues from another perspective and point of view. Professor Larry Glassford has insightful views and profound knowledge of Canadian Issues. The materials he gave us in his class let us know more about some background and historical origin of some issues, which helps us understand the reasons for current issues and find the method to solve some of them. In Professor George Zhou’s class, we often talk about the significance of education, some education policies in different countries and our responsibilities as teachers. We have a deep understanding of Canadian culture in
Professor Shijing Xu’s class.
Science Science is designed to familiarize us with the nature of science and a framework for teaching science and technology program. Professor George Plantus sets a good example of teacher so that we know how to be patient, let students participate in class and care enough about students. In-class activities and Professor Aamer Shujah’s guidance to the students make us realize that the willingness
4

to learn, having fun and cooperating, and learning within the community including the teacher are main factors to teach science successfully. It is also good to make students learn science initiatively with their own experiences.
Social Study Professor Larry Glassford Professor Glassford’s Social Studies is very practical and full of variety. From his class, I have gained how to deal with children from Junior Kindergarten to grade 6, furthermore, I learnt some instructional practices and curriculum planning. Personally, I also wrote some lesson plans and made a presentation in this class which strengthened my confidence and enhanced my instructional skills.
——张念(Nian Zhang)
Political Science Professor John Sutcliffe we have analyzed Decision-Making in the European Union and Government and politics in European——policy area in the European
Union. What’s more, I also learned meticulous thinking, critical mind and political literacy out of class.
——张念(Nian Zhang)
Issues in World Politics Professor Andrew Richter We always have on-going debates in the field of International Relations. I have learnt some
state systems, international conflict, and global development. In this class, I have to
combine elements of theory, foreign policy analysis, and case studies. This is quite
challenging to me, but meanwhile, I can comprehend different fields of knowledge from it.
——张念(Nian Zhang)
Chemistry Professor George Zhou In Professor George Zhou’s class, I have learned that teaching is a process of sharing and mutual learning. During his class, the students can express their views on any issue and their good advice, whether correct or not. And his class belongs to the students, giving the students enough time to explore the issues, and make a presentation to show what they have learned.
——邓维薇(Weiwei Deng)
Language arts Professor Susan Holloway Professor Susan Holloway is in charge of classes, providing a new horizon for teaching LA and LAC. The roles she plays impressed Fen and me a lot, we learned how to be a good organizer, participants, assessor
and controller. Your nonverbal instruction can totally hold the whole class, see? You raise your hands, which symbolizes extremely silence.

Psychology in Education Professor Mike Dignan Psychology in Education is one of my best courses in university.
Actually I have finished it last year in China. But it’s a totally
different experience in Professor Mike Dignan’s class. He is
humors, professional and patient. Although I knew some of what
he taught, I really enjoyed his teaching skills. After that period, I
have had a deeper understanding of Learning Theory and ADHD,
which interested me best when I learned this course in
Southwest University
——周凡琳(Fanlin Zhou)
History Professor Larry Glassford Professor Larry Glassford gave me very lively history classes, which made me reawake the meaning of history and how to be a teacher. In his class, we are provided with opportunities to explore and talk about history. I really enjoyed the discussion of the brain storm and interaction in class. Professor Larry made history come to our daily life. Through attending his classes, I learned that a history teacher is supposed to make history come alive. What I’m going to do is to give that kind of class to my students in the future. It would require more than a lifetime, but I believe I can!
——曾佳凡(Jiafan Zeng)
ProfessorFinney V. Cherian
Professor Christopher Greig
In ProfessorFinney V. Cherian’s class , He puts plenty of
activities into the class to indicate that language arts need fresh blood to arouse students' interests. I have learned that a teacher just like a performer from his instructional skills, especially
when he imitates different roles to tell a story.
——周宇(Yu Zhou)
Professor Christopher Greig’s smile and attitude made every student feel warm and comfortable. What he taught us was really useful in primary education such as how to make good talks with students and how to make assessment and evaluation.

Learning with Technology Professor Nobuko Fujita In Professor Fujita’ class, we are divided into several
groups and each group will explore a new technology
they have chosen before class and give a 20-minute
presentation in class. I think it is difficult to
communicate with others in English and I want to give
up this participation. Professor Fujita encourages me,
saying that it is a good chance and she writes an email
to all my group members to include me in their group.
So I really explore the Clicker 5 and the reading
materials together with others. Besides, I learn how to
be a good discussion leader and how to do a wonderful
technology demonstration. ——牛彦弘(Yanhong Niu)
Computer Science Professor Zuochen Zhang Computer Science is designed to make teacher candidates acquire
appropriate pedagogy and develop effective techniques for teaching
computer studies. Professor Zhang speaks slowly so that every
student can catch up with him. He is very considerate. When he
assigns homework, he will carefully tell us the font, font size, format
of the paper, the length of the article, reference, etc. In his class, I find
the powerful functions of each program and I am interested to explore
more of each program.
——牛彦弘(Yanhong Niu)
Physics Professor Zhijin( Judy) Xu Professor Xu provided us with an interactive
environment and that allowed us to discuss physics
and science we observed and experienced. What
impressed me most are the activities and
experiments in class using the simple materials that
are easy to find in daily life. From Professor Xu, I
learned that success in teaching physics is how to
turn some abstract concepts into visual phenomena
and make students feel curious to explore, and how
to design activities to make students learn better with their rich personal experiences in
life.
——李梦洁(Mengjie Li)

Biology Professor Geri Salinitri An introduction to the growth, development, and learning of children from grade 9 to grade 12 with an emphasis on instructional practices and curriculum planning for teaching biology. It tells us the 4 levels of evaluation on knowledge and understanding, thinking and investigation, communication, and application. Professor Geri Salinitri gives us the teacher package of some biology exemplar tasks to show how to teach and evaluate the students according to different kinds of expectations. She also teaches us some simple experiments and skills such as Tie Dyed Milk and Wine-making, and accompanies us to the Pelee Winery to observe the process of making wine. She teaches us with passion and uses her knowledge to affect us. She tells us that: the more you talk, the less you teach when you are in the class.
——祁万军(Wanjun Qi)
Language Arts Methodology Professor Kara Smith An introduction to the growth, development, and learning of children from grades 4 to 8, with an emphasis on instructional practices and curriculum planning for teaching language arts. In Professor Kara Smith's class, I always feel comfortable and inspired because she tries to make this small calss easier to understand and encourage us in varied ways. It is Professor Smith who teaches me that JOY means “Just One You”. I do appreciate her wisdom in delivering the lesson and she engages us to think about underlined philosophy
by small words.
——罗芬(Fen Luo)
Math Professor Martinovic Dragana
Professor Martinovic Dragana conducted her math class in a casual
way, so we could learn math in a comfortable atmosphere. She was the
organizer and director of the class in the most time, it was the students
that participated in her class and learned a lot of things. The activities
which I liked most in her class was the Math Debate, by discussing and
expressing our own ideas freely, we learned a lot from the teacher and
classmates, and we had a much more profound understanding of math.
——焦梦(Meng Jiao)

1
Math Professor Anthony Ezeife Professor Anthony Ezeife’s class is a place where math is real,
meaningful, relevant, and all learners have fun. By Professor
Anthony Ezeife’s clearly and detailedly explaining, I have
learned a lot about how to teach mathematics. Actually, the
mathematics knowledge we learned in the class was easy, but
Professor Anthony Ezeife prepared the class well. He not only
taught us how to solve the mathematics problems, but also soaked the simple but profound
mathematics theory into the class teaching.
——焦梦(Meng Jiao)
Music Professor Terry Sefton Much appreciation goes to her. She always encourages
me to be brave and participate in her class to the fullest. I
have learned some useful pedagogical knowledge and
teaching skills from her. She recommended me to join the
chorus so that my voice could keep practicing. Time
spent with her was enjoyable.
——林玲(Ling Lin)
Music Professor Jonathan Bayley
His charisma and enthusiasm made me feel warm and inspired. He
could engage the students in an effective way and that is what I
need to learn and keep in mind. Thanks to him, I can play recorder
now and his words “posture, breathing and fingers” indicate the
key components of playing instruments. Moreover, his care for us
during the practicum is deeply appreciated..

We participated in the professional development
programs, given by the professors of university of Windsor and
excellent teaching staff of middle and primary school every
Thursday. Those lectures covered very broad content, including culture, teacher
education, and diversity of Canadian school culture, overview of Ontario schools and
professional development of teachers.
Professor Larry Glassford and Professor Xu provided
us with a lecture about how to make Professional
Development Portfolio. By recording the detail of our
growth, it will be useful for our personal development
and provides valuable reference for cultivation of student
teachers.
The lectures provided by the two Chinese professors in
the Faculty of Education are very helpful and quite close
to our life. Professor Zhang told us his experience of
studying English, meanwhile, talked something about
cultural differences so that we can fit in better with the
new environment.
Similarly, Professor
Zhou described his
own story of studying and working. And both of them
gave us a lot of advice and instructions. They
encouraged us to build confidence, pursue bravely
and expand knowledge not only from books but also
from environment.

From Professor Kathleen Roy’s lecture,
we learned the general situation of
education in Ontario, including schools,
education administration and employment
of teachers, etc.
In Ontario, teachers need to fulfill five
basic tasks: the first one is to carry on the
curriculum criterion of Ontario; secondly,
they should keep discipline and maintain good public order in class; thirdly, teachers are
expected to keep close contact with parents; and then they need to keep a record of
students' growth and self-reflection; last but not the least, teachers should take an
active part in extracurricular activities. To large degree, teacher is like a full-time nurse,
they should treat every student with care and love.
——祁万军 Wanjun Qi
Ms. Jo-Anne Grozelle and Mr. Elver Peruzzo mainly introduced the schools of Ontario to
us. They talked about the school calendar of middle
and primary school and many problems met in
teaching, such as early love, fighting and cheating, etc.
At the same time, Canada is a country with high
divorce rate. Many students came from single-parent
families or poor families which only exist on payouts
from the government. For that reason, we must take
the family problems into consideration.
Mr. Elver Peruzzo also told us that the most difficult and important subjects are English
and math in Canada. Canada is a country of immigration, so English teaching is
particularly important. Every school has English class and specific class for the students
11
1
have poor level in English. Ms. Jo-Anne
Grozelle and Mr. Elver Peruzzo introduced
the evaluation system of Canadian
education to us. At the end of lecture, we
had a heated discussion on the differences
between Chinese school and Canadian
school. This lecture made us know much
about Ontario's school, some educational issues and the differences between Canadian
education and Chinese education.
—— 张念 Nian Zhang
Professor Plantus's lecture gave me a kind of feelings that make me so relax and helpful,
he taught us a lot about teaching by showing
us a wonderful class. From the rules in class to
the scientific methods used in experiments, we
felt a lot about a good lesson and the teaching
hints. What impressed me most is that he
emphasized on the group work, and assign
students with a role or task to give the students
a sense of ownership in the classroom. From many details he made every students
engaged in class and connect with them. Many thanks to Professor Plantus for giving us
such a creative and helpful lesson!

The visit to F. W. Begley Public School motivates me to think a lot about our own
education system and our expectations for ourselves and for the students. We cannot say
which system is better or worse because they are different. This idea is in words of Mr.
Schaffner and he is really a brilliant principal to a great degree. He shared with us his
beliefs in education and his expectations for teachers, some of which are absolutely
applicable in China. This inspires me in such a way that I am able to imagine a new
horizon for my future teaching practice.

Glenwood in our mind:
October 17, 2011--- November 5, 2011
1
LETTER of Appreciation
Dear Glenwood Public School Members:
We are leaving Glenwood with a feeling of unwillingness, because we have so
many fond and beautiful memories here.
We still remember vividly the first day at Glenwood when we embarked our educational journey with you here. Meanwhile, being Chinese future teachers, we hope to be a “cultural and educational bridge”. Our goal was not just sitting quietly at the back of the classroom. We appreciate all the opportunities that the teachers and children offered us for our participation and interaction in their classes. So, we get started now. Every drop, every piece counts. We were preoccupied with observing, digesting something new and different but meaningful or helpful. Now, looking back on these two weeks, every one of us changed a lot: you
taught us how to be a versatile teacher who has a strong sense of responsibility.
You demonstrated to us how to create a safe environment for every student and
how to manage the classroom effectively and scientifically and how to evaluate
a student in a comprehensive way and why.
In a sense, you provided us with an authentic perspective of Canadian education
in this wonderful school.
Millions of thanks to Glenwood teachers, children and every staff member. We
know we cannot get it done smoothly and successfully without you.
Particularly, we want to thank Principal Miloyevich. Thank you for providing us
with such a wonderful learning experience at your school. Your leadership and
the dedications of all the staff members make Glenwood such a wonderful
school.
Much appreciation to you all!

Attractive Classes In Glenwood Public School, what impressed us most are the colorful classes of strong
significance. Teachers use different teaching strategies to inspire the creativity of students,
develop their capabilities of studying,
improve their abilities of practical
application, promote their insight
into art and cultivate their spirit of
cooperation. What they want is not
only to teach students knowledge and
skills but also to make students enjoy
the process of learning. Teachers
should help students to establish
con
stan
t
confidence by creating a warm, safe and fun classroom
environment. Teaching is not the end, making students find the
fun of learning makes more sense. And it is so-called finding
entertainment in teaching(寓教于乐). It would require more
than a lifetime.
The music class is one of the amazing classes we have observed. Students create different
symbols to design their own sounds capes. It’s a good
way to develop students’ confidence because not
every student is good at playing instruments. And it
can make more students engaged and find the fun of
music.
In language arts class, students design and make
their own story books, set a regular time to read books,
use word bank to understand vocabulary deeply.
Through those activities, students can develop a good
habit of reading and master the process of writing.
PE class is always the most
interesting class. Teachers
design different activities to
engage students and make them
enjoy the process of exercise as
well.

In these two weeks, we attended a lot of colorful activities such as Field
Trip, Dance Party, Halloween and Potluck. Teachers and students showed to
us how amazing they were. Everyone is creative and awesome! Glenwood is
always full of energy and love. We really appreciated what we saw, what we
heard and what we experienced.
Happy Halloween! Fantastic pumpkins
were designed by teachers and students'
families. The one in colorful cloth was
voted to be the silliest and the cat was
chosen as the most creative one by all the
students in Glenwood. Wonderful
Halloween for us all!
We were very lucky to attend
field trips of G7 and G8. Brave
boys and girls belong to nature.
Group work, confidence and
cooperation were everywhere.
Good job! Grade s 7 and 8!
Thank you for your support
and consideration. We all
enjoyed the Canadian food
completely. It was such a treat!

Millions of THANKS
Dear Mr. Szamburski:
Thank you! I really learned a lot from you. What impressed me
most are your teaching style and the way of interacting with
students. You take the cheerful, patient and optimistic attitude
toward students and their work. You let me know that being a
teacher, we need to give students choices; meanwhile, we should
respect them and treat them as independent individuals.
Thanks again!
----- Jiafan, Zeng 曾佳凡
Dear Mrs. Vreman:
I learned a lot and admire you, you are such a great
teacher! In class, you are so active and enthusiastic.
You are so kind to the kids and me. From you, I
learn how to teach kids patiently, how to deal with
those who have special characteristics, how to get
students involved in the class and so on. I spent a
very happy time together with you. Thank you very
much!
Best,
Yanhong Niu 牛彦弘
Dear Mrs. S and Mrs. P:
We Chinese have a metaphor about teachers and the students: “Children are flowers of our society, and
teachers are gardener, whose hard work is for these “flowers of the future”.
Definitely, you are the hardworking gardeners, irrigating these flowers with your sweat. However, you are
not just the gardeners. Your diversity and variety in the classroom make me know that a teacher is
supposed to be a new-concept gardener.
Sincerely,
Zhenyang, Yin 殷振洋

THE PRACTICUM OF TEACHER CANDIDATES FROM SWU, CHINA
OCTOBER 21, 2011 — NOVEMBER 4, 2011
Dear principals, teachers and students of Professor H. D. Taylor Public School,
Our two weeks with you have passed so quickly and what has happened in Taylor Public
School keeps flashing in our mind. Thank you all for understanding and accepting us
with enthusiasm. It was really a great joy to be part of Taylor in these two weeks. Never
have we had such a wonderful experience. You not only placed us in a cozy home where
the tears of sorrow fade and songs of endless joy abound, but also presented us how
love, care and ceaseless praise can change a child.
What an enchanting destiny it is that ties us together! So much fun has been recorded in
our mind and so much joy has been experienced with all the great staff and lovely angels
at Taylor. How delightful it is to learn your story, to share your joy and to be part of this
caring community. Children at Taylor are confident and brave just like the dignified tiger
with the guidance of these brilliant Taylor teachers. You have been amazing in creating
so many beautiful memories for us. It is Taylor that makes us know how unique everyone
is; it is Taylor that teaches us the importance to give appreciations and it is Taylor that
helps us realize that the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their
dreams.
Thank you so much. We'll keep it in mind that "Learn as though you will live forever". Go

·Avoid confrontations in front of students.
·Stop disruptions with a little humour.
·Keep high expectations in the class.
·Keep rules understandable.
·Start fresh everyday.
·Over plan.
Teaching Methodology
Mr. Saunders is the kind of teacher who has his own teaching
principles. When he was teaching in the class, he never told the
answers to the students. He would always ask the students questions
and ask them to search the answers by themselves. By this kind of
step by step inducement, the students’ problem solving skills could be
improved significantly. And hence the students could develop a good
habit of solving problems independently.

Teaching a Song
We were lucky and happy to have the
chance to teach some children to
sing a Chinese song, “Three Little
Bears”. It was very unforgettable.
Miss Yanjing Peng taught them
Chinese pronunciation, Miss Fen Luo
told them the story in English and
Miss Ling Lin taught them to sing it.
It was not an easy song to learn, but
all the kids were so talented to
master it. Thanks a lot for giving us
such an amazing experience.

Wonderful Camping
Sand Art:
Children have an amazing ability to make
the best use of sand, rocks, feathers and
leaves around the beach to create their own
art. This work helps children notice the
importance of leadership and collaboration.
Day/Night Hikes:
Hiking was one of the most important parts
of this camping experience to help build
leadership and collaboration. We went
hiking both during the day and at night. We
walked through the forest and along the
boardwalk through Point Pelee’s wetlands
during the daytime. The kids had close
contact with the beautiful nature. At night,
the kids walked through the dark path
without any light. They helped each other
and finally they got out of the forest. While
standing on the beach at Erie Lake and
seeing the beautiful night peace of Middle
Island, we thought a lot about time and life.
Girls Talk & Boys Talk:
Mrs. Laforet talked with the girls and
boys separately about teenage issues
like dating, dreaming and how to select
friends.
Banners:
Students developed a sense of leadership
and cooperation in the process of banner
building.

Dougall Public School
The practicum of teacher candidates
from SWU·China
1
Dear Dougall Public School:
Thank you very much for providing
us with such a great learning opportunity.
During the last two weeks, we
observed and learned a lot from all of you.
Thank you for your consideration. Because
of your elaborately planning,
we had this treasure scope to explore different teachers’ unique
teaching strategies. We really appreciate the
Teachers’ advanced teaching philosophy,
effective teaching strategies and
flexible classroom management.
What deeply impressed us is your
love and patience on the students.
Your noble spirits of dedication
inspire us a lot. Your versatile ability
stimulates us that there is still long
way to go.

Appreciation for all teachers
Mrs. Freeman is definitely a passionate
teacher. I am attracted by her charismatic style of
introducing new ideas and topic as an interesting
way of education.
We really appreciate the music teacher who is excellent and
outstanding. I am pleasantly surprised by his talent. We learned
teacher should be professional but also be knowledgeable.
Besides I understood that art teacher should teach the students
understand what art is and how to express their feelings by art.
Mr. Taylor does well in managing his
classroom. We learned we should uses
heuristics to guide the students and
motivate students to participate in
classes. We understand that teachers
should promotes cooperative learning.
Mrs. Maria is a very successful French teacher.
She can arouse students’ interests for French
study through songs. We learned a lot of
teaching methods and philosophy for second
language teaching.

Mr. Seal concentrates on teamwork and
spares no effort to create a comfortable
learning atmosphere for students.
I like this kind of class for I have the chance
to apply what I learned in class into my
future classes. This form will arouse students’
interests on study and students will benefit a
lot in the long run.
It is difficult for little kids to pay attention to study
for a long time. I learned singing is a good teaching
strategy for them. Combining studying and playing
makes the classroom a paradise for them.
Dance class is an amazing class which cultivates
students' creativity and imagination. Story made
according to the music is helpful to teach students
how to dance by themselves. I learned that dancing is
one of the art forms by using different ways to
express feelings.

We really appreciate Mrs. Naismith’s patience with the
kids. She is an experienced teacher that has taught in
Dougall for 13 years. We learned when one teacher set the
perimeter of the rules, he/she should explain the reason of
why those perimeters are set in the first place.
Thank you, Mr. Krsul! We learned creating a
caring and comfortable environment for all
students is very necessary. We learned teachers
should organize different activities to bring
students together so that they can finish their
work efficiently and quickly.
A lot of students in these two multicultural classes come
from different countries around the world. Mr. Wideen is
good at applying technology to help his students learn.
He created his own website called Mr. Wideen’s Wikis,
which builds a good communication platform for
students, teachers, and parents. He is the ideal 21st
century school teacher.

Letter of Appreciation Dear Century Secondary School, We really appreciate you opening the doors for us in Century for two weeks. Staff and students
here have left a deep impression on us.
We can’t forget the first day when we came into Century with a lot of anxiety. We had never
been to such a special school as Century before. We even had no confidence that we could get
along well with the students, who are taller and stronger than any of us. However, Principal
Kristie Mckim and Ms. Karen Tompkins welcomed us warmly, telling us everything about this
school and patiently answering each question we asked. What's more, Mr. Welch guided us on a
tour of the school to make sure that we could spend the two weeks comfortably. We still feel
grateful about these pieces of precious memory now.
During these two weeks, we have experienced a different kind of education. We can’t believe
these so-called special students are so talented, smart and creative! Nobody gives up. The
teachers are full of love and expectations and we are moved by them every day.
We want to say thanks to everyone in Century. Because of you, we have a deeper understanding
of special education, which has changed our minds. Also we will not feel afraid of teaching
special students when we are back to China. We are strongly impressed by teachers' patience.
Only with love and understanding, teachers can be better.
I am not the only one, but I am one. I can’t do everything, but I can do something. This is the
spirit of Century and also the belief of teachers and students here. We love Century.
Many thanks to Century!
Best wishes!

Colorful Courses
Computer
In Mr. Lengyel’s class, it is more casual
and students can listen to music when they
are working on their assignments. If the
students need help, Mr. Lengyel will go to
their seats and guide them step by step.
When students do something wrong, Mr.
Lengyel will call their names and stare at
them. It usually works. Mr. Lengyel is their
good teacher and helpful friend.
Science
In science class, Mr. Downes always put the
schedule on the board, in which he arranged
some games times for the students, including
the weekly challenge. He let the students
have a strong willingness of learning, and
made sure all the students are engaged in
science and learned with fun. To make the
students master in science knowledge, he
taught in diverse ways, such as showing
pictures, using computers, conducting
experiments and so on. He successfully
makes science interesting and meaningful to
all the students.
Physical Education
PE class was always the most exciting moment.
In the gym, boys and girls became alive at once.
It seemed that they forgot about themselves and
never felt tired when doing sports. When
watching them, we were always affected by their
vitality and wanted to join them. Here, they find
their passion, and pursue it crazily.

Distinctive shops Kitchen
Students who have individual
education plan (IEP) and
operational ability can apply for the
cooking class. To our surprise,
those students with learning
disability can make amazing food.
When working, they looked serious
and cautious. I could see their
enjoyment, enthusiasm and passion
for cooking. Despite the fact that
they had learning disabilities, they
could still do something very well
just as anyone else. Their spirit of
optimism moved me so much.
Nail Art
It is a very refined and beautiful class in
Century. The students are very smart
and they create many different kinds of
wonderful patterns, such as dog,
sunflower, ladybug, leopard pattern, etc.
They are fantastic and awesome!

Millions Of Thanks Dear Mr. Behm and Mrs. Allen,
Thanks for your care while I was in Century.
I carefully observed and studied both of you
and I really learned a lot. Your professional
spirit deserves admiration. Through
watching Mr. Behm’s class, I learned how to
interact with students and manage a
classroom effectively. I’m really impressed
by Mrs. Allen’s teaching philosophy. You
encouraged students to challenge themselves
and succeeded in inspiring students’
creativity.
What I learned from both of you will surely
make a great difference to my future teaching
career.
Thank you so much!
Best wishes,
Jiafan, Zeng 曾佳凡
Dear Mr. Welch and Ms. Simpson,
I really appreciate that I had this chance to work with you. I have
learned a lot from you. Mr. Welch's patience and Ms. Simpson's
considerateness impressed me deeply. You are always full of energy
and consideration. All kids love you, so do I. Thank you for
teaching me how to be a good listener and speaker. I still remember
Ms. Simpson's words “I am busy, but I love my job". I hope that one
day I can love my job as much as you do. Thank you and I'll not
forget these days being with you.
Sincerely,
Fanlin, Zhou 周凡琳
Dear Mrs Tompkins and Miss Dunmore,Thank you for your
kindness and thoughtfulness. I really learned a lot from you and had a
good time in your class. What impressed me most is your smile and
eyes full of love to the special students. Thanks again and the best
wishes for you.

Dear Mr. Lengyel,
Thank you for your great support during the
two weeks. I learned a lot.
In the class, you are always kind and patient.
When students need help, you will go to
their seats and tell them step by step. I am
impressed by your great patience. You like
them but you don’t spoil them. When they
don’t behave themselves, you are angry and
you will strictly tell them what’s wrong and
what they should do.
As for me, you explained what I didn’t
know in detail. You introduced me to all of
your students when I came to your class.
You made me feel at home. Thank you for
helping me a lot. I enjoyed my time in your class. Thank you very much!
Best,
Yanhong, Niu 牛彦弘 Dear Mr. Downes, Thank you so much for showing me a lot, I
really enjoyed myself in every science class.
You are really a successful teacher, especially
your teaching style: humorous but efficient,
much like what you said “very quickly, guys”.
I learned from you that diverse teaching
methods will be more helpful, including
pictures, computer, playing games and also
conducting experiments. Besides the schedule
you put on the blackboard every morning,
including the weekly challenge, from many
details, you made every student believe that
they could do it! Your daily teaching made me decide to be a good teacher like you. Many sincere thanks
to you for all that you taught me and for making every day so happy and meaningful! Thank you very
much!

A Letter of Appreciation
Dear Principal Garlick and all the staff,
Where there is a good principal, there is a good school. We think this is
why Forster Public School has a good reputation. Principal Garlick, you
are an absolutely considerate and enthusiastic principal. With your
elaborate management and organization, we acquired a lot during the
last two-week practicum.
You provide us with a window through which we see different
perspectives of how Canadian education goes. We love your distinctive
classes and kind teachers here.
Looking back the last two weeks, we learned a lot,
ranging from the “literary
forest” to “automobile and food”, from how
to be physically strong to mentally strong.
We are on the way to change. Thank you for
providing us with a great practical learning environment.

Mr. Watters’ ESL class style is a little bit
like the Chinese style. You told us, the best
teacher can find a balance between Chinese
and Canadian styles. And you are also a
good controller in the classroom.
Mrs. Snaden’s philosophy is as beautiful as
her voice. How to teach new words is
different for you and for us. After
observing your class, I prefer to choose
your Visual Aids style, which students can
digest words in a real living situation.
I like Mrs. Donaldson’s classroom
settings—Literal Forest, which gives us
many inspirations on how to set our future
classroom. Thank you for your kindness.

In Mrs. Fackrell academic classes, what impressed me most
is what she said to all the class that is “Trouble is, if I do it
for you, you will not learn.” And I learned that teachers
should associate with social problems and reality.
I like Ms Tsafos’s way to stimulate students’ interests on
Chemistry. You taught me how to combine a good
experiment with the theory.
Mr. Sarrors inspired me to view some China’s affairs from
another perspective and point of view. Asking the students
to draw the world map by themselves is not only a good
teaching method but also a heuristic teaching philosophy.

Mrs. Spolsky taught not just how to
make delicious food, but also taught
students how to be noble men in her food
class. Mrs. Spolsky teaches us to think
out of box—not only teaching about an
individual course, but integrating all the courses together.
Mr. O’Neil divided the students into two groups.
One group was doing some carpentry work;
while the other group was doing some practice
of building structure. I enjoyed helping the
students, it was very fun and we had many
laughs.
We participated in the activities
and enjoyed the whole class.
The teachers taught us a
lot of interesting activities,
which we will take
back to China.

Teachers should encourage students to create
artworks by making full use of their
imagination, and Mrs. Seaton always seemed
to have new exciting and creative ideas
coming to her mind.
Mr. Yaworsky’s class totally changed my
previous stereotypes; law can be so interesting if
used in this way—cases studies. Above all, it is
your sense of humor that makes the
atmosphere happy and harmonious.
It is a challenge to get along well with students
from different grades and with jagged musical
levels, while Mr. Yamamoto did a great job as
a good organizer. I learned that a good
teacher needs to play different roles
dealing with class—controller, commander, organizer, participant, and it was
effectively demonstrated here.

THE PRACTICUM OF TEACHER CANDIDATES FROM SWU, CHINA
NOVEMBER 7, 2011 — NOVEMBER 18, 2011
Massey Mustangs

Classroom Observation
Math (Mr. Ing, Mr. Baglole)
In Mr. Ing and Mr. Baglole’s math class they always asked the
students to write the problem solving process on the
blackboard and explain the answers to the whole class. I think
it is a good way to share the thoughts with the teachers and
classmates. By this kind of class presentation, the students can
become much more confident, and they can have a deep
understanding of how math works. Both teachers and
students really enjoyed the process very much.
Physics & Chemistry ( Ms. Mohan , Ms. Munson)
One of my most meaningful experiences in Massey was to
observe the physics and chemistry lab class. In Ms. Mohan’s
Physics class, the students were divided into several groups to
do different experiments. Some of them even made the lab
facilities by themselves so they could comprehend the
experiment principles much better. In Ms. Munson’s chemistry
lab class, the students learned the activator effect to the rate of
chemistry reaction by doing experiment. She emphasized that
respecting the facts was the most important thing when doing
an experiment.
Biology & Science Enriched
(Ms. Hamzeh, Ms. Sun, Professor Charron)
The students should be the center of attention of every
classroom with the opportunity to ask specific questions
and contribute to class discussions. Teachers focus on
balancing theoretical knowledge while at the same time
providing pragmatic problems. Students approach
solving problems in several ways: Thinking by
themselves (individually), with a pair (desk partners)
and collaboratively as a whole class. One way the
students express what they have learned is by creating
projects such as posters, which are a fun activity.

Cultural Ambassador
Presentations about Chinese Culture and
Education On the second Thursday in Massey, our buddy Ms. Brianna Jentzel invited us to
give presentations about Chinese culture and education in her class. We felt
greatly honored to have this precious opportunity. We presented Chinese
folk-custom, Chinese Zodiac, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese music and Chinese
education in her class. The students were curious about China in all aspects, so
they listened carefully during the presentations. And we communicated with
them about some questions they were interested in. It was a great chance for
us to show something typical or special about China to the students in Massey,
so they could have a more comprehensive understanding of Chinese culture and
education. We are here to continue building a cultural bridge between Canada
and China, and we believe that we have been successful.

Learning Centre
Massey is a multi-cultural school and many ELL students study here. The learning centre
can provide some extra help for them since English is not their first language. Also, if the
student has a hard time when doing the assignment or test, he/she can ask for permission
to finish his/her work
in the learning centre. There are
two Ms. Martire’s in the centre. Ms.
M. Martire is a support teacher
and Ms. L. Martire is a student
success teacher. They are always
there to help students. Besides, Ms.
M. Martire will spend the lunch
time with those ELL students so
that they can talk with her in
English and that is a good way to
get English improved.
More importantly, some teachers
will stay in learning centre for one
hour after school to provide help
for students.
Unique Massey
Enrichment Programs
We are thankful to have observed some enriched classes, that according to some
teachers, Massey is special for its Enrichment Programs. Teachers will recommend
students to different enriched subjects, and this application allows differentiated
instructions to the fullest, which is good to have in a school.
Others
There are a variety of after-school programs
in Massey like Computer Club, Choir
Rehearsal and so on. Students here have a
great opportunity to achieve success.

To the principals, teachers and students of Vincent Massey Secondary
School,
How time flies! Our final placement in Windsor came to an end as we bid farewell to
dear Massey. Standing at the school gate, we gave our final stare with deep gratitude to
this lovely and sweet place that is full of vitality.
In two weeks we have witnessed such a great time at Massey. We have not only
played as observers, but also as participants. Thank you all for providing us with such a
great opportunity to participate in different classes and also for allowing us to show the
Chinese culture to your students.
Massey is a diverse and multi-cultural school with students from around the world
gathering here, where mutual respect and understanding is always highlighted and
encouraged. You show that every student is unique in his/her own way with special
cultural background.
Thanks to all the teachers here for communicating with us and presenting us what
Massey is. We truly see the beauty of education in you.
The stay in Massey will be one of the best parts of our memories. We feel honored
to be part of Massey. Great changes have occurred in our teaching philosophy as well as
our oral English.
Thank you again for your great support and here we want to give our sincere
appreciation to Principal Mrs. Nantais, Ms. M. Martire, Professor Shijing Xu and

【Terry Fox Run】
Leah McArthur, our friend in Canada, once invited us to
the town of wallaceburgto experience the Terry Fox Run
Which is an annual non-competitive charity event in
commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox
and to raise money for cancer research.
It’s a great surprise that we’ve been posted in the local
newspaper of Wallaceburg and thank all these great
friends for making our stay in Canada more meaningful.

Leah, a perfect hostess, not only invited us to taste the local Thanksgiving dinner, but also
took us to participate in the Bridgen Fall

【Walpole Island】
We went to the Walpole Island where the
first nations live. The island largely
maintained its original state. But we can
obviously feel the Westernization here. We walked around the Marsh reed land in
Walpole Island, we walked around and
enjoyed the beautiful scenery there. We
were so excited to pick apples in the farm in
Walpole Island.
We knew more about the First Nation. We’d
better call them the first nation other than
Indians. The feathers are the Symbol of
different social status and emotional state.
【Halloween】
Halloween is a very important festival we experienced here. The decoration is so cool.
We have also gone to Lydia’s house to carve jack-o'-lanterns. This is our first time we have
made different kinds of lights.
On October 31, We dressed in Halloween costumes and
went outside to trick-or-treating around the
neighborhood and we received a lot of candies that night.
We do appreciate Canadian enthusiasm as well as their
respect for traditional holiday!

【Wine Festival】
We experienced the Winery in
Lambton on september 11th.
Lambton is a local wine resort,
where you can taste different
kinds of wine, also you can spend
you spare time happily with your
friends. Some staff will introduce
all kinds of wine to you so that
you can know them deeply before
you pay for what you like.
Wine tasting is a kind of art,so is wine. Try to throw yourself into the culture and you will
find more fun.
【Fahrenheit Festival】
Luckily, we had a chance to participate in Fire Festival.
You can see various kinds of scarecrows when entering
the gate. Many artists were performing in the center of
the square.
At 8 p.m. the activity began, we were fallen into the
beautiful fires. The people who design them have
perfect creativity. It was a fantastic night and we will
never forget.

The End We flew all the way from China to the beautiful country of the Maple
Leaf --- Canada. Three months’ visit has given us life-changed experiences. It is
the enthusiasm and hospitality of the people here that make us feel so safe and
comfortable even though we underwent some uneasiness upon our arrival because
of language barrier and some worries. There are too many appreciations we need to
give and there are too many stories we want to tell. What we can do now is make
full use of what we have learned to the teaching practice in the future. We look
forward to seeing you again someday and continuing this exotic
friendship. Canada, goodbye!
WE ARE ON THE WAY TO A WONDERFUL FUTURE!
