The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a membership organization for adults 50 and over who understand that quality of life is enhanced through learning. You need not be an alumnus/alumna of UWM in

order to join. Osher is the perfect way to expand your knowledge while joining more than 1,000 like-minded, active older adults.

Become a Member

You must be a member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UWM to register for programs. If you have not joined Osher or renewed your membership, you may do so by including the membership fee (see page 24) with the registration form on pages 25-26, or visit sce-osher.uwm.edu. To verify your membership status, call the Osher office at 414-227-3321.

Reciprocity with Other Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes

Members in good standing with another Osher group may pay the usual event fee and attend any Osher offering while visiting. Those who move here will be considered members until the next annual membership fee is due. They may then pay UWM School of Continuing Education Osher dues and continue in good standing.

Registration

Once you’ve joined Osher, registration is required for program participation. Registration for any course or program is open until one week before the start date. However, classes fill up quickly, so we encourage you to register early.

3. Participant withdrawals made less than two weeks prior to the start of a program:

• Participant may elect to transfer fees one time to any currently available program OR receive a refund, less 20% for an administrative fee

Enjoy two to six-week noncredit sessions on various topics such as the arts, literature, ethics, law, politics, religion and history, taught by UWM faculty

and other experts and professionals in the community.

Know Your Medicine, Know Your Pharmacist How comfortable are you when it comes to explaining what your medicine is for or how to take it? Patients who take multiple medications run the risk of taking them improperly and mixing medications that may interact with each other. Learn how your pharmacist can play a role in your health care, how to properly store and dispose of medications, tips on keeping track of your medications, and where to go to find answers. You are encouraged to bring your own medications, a listing of your drug allergies and your immunization record so you can complete a comprehensive medication list.

Sarah Ray, Pharm.D., BCPS is an assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the Concordia University Wisconsin School of Pharmacy. She also practices at Milwaukee Health Services, Inc., where she educates patients on their medications and collaborates with other health care providers to help manage patients with chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, COPD, asthma or hypercholesterolemia. Ray is a strong believer in patients taking an active role in their health care.

July 7John Roach “Northern Arizona: Sedona, the Small State Parks and Route 66” Take a visit to Sedona, Prescott, Route 66, Little Painted Desert, Lower Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and Glen Canyon vicariously through stunning photos and a firsthand account. John Roach became passionate about photography after a successful engineering and management career. He is active in the Urban Ecology Center Photography Club and Coalition of Photographic Arts here in Milwaukee, and in the Union League Club of Chicago Photography Group.


July 14Tony Busalacchi “I-Beams, Statues of Naked People and Graffiti” Are these worthy of being called art? Take a look at public art, pre-historic to present, controversial and universally acclaimed. Tony Busalacchi is an artist, world traveler and a frequent presenter for Osher, North Shore School for Seniors and many other organizations. He taught humanities at the high school and university levels and is interested in art, architecture and history.

July 21 Priscilla Kucik “What Does a Scotsman Wear Under His Kilt? And More…” Take a bonnie wee romp through the history of Scotland, as the universal appeal of the Scottish people is explained by an unbiased lassie. Priscilla Kucik is a charter member and current president of the Robert Burns Club of Milwaukee, one of the first women members of the St. Andrew’s Society of Milwaukee, past Wisconsin commissioner for Clan MacLeod, and speaker at the Celtic Women First Friday lectures. Her favorite color is plaid.

July 28Ellis Bromberg “Public Broadcasting in the Digital Age” Milwaukee Public Television has launched one of the most ambitious digital multicast plans in the country. Discover how they’ve transitioned into the digital age and where public broadcasting is headed in the future. Ellis Bromberg has been the general manager of Milwaukee Public Television, which includes WMVS and WMVT broadcasting, online and print services, since 2000.

Aug. 4Carolyn Suneja “The Art of Books” Using examples from the 18th-20th centuries, walk through the process of printing and binding books, and explore bookbinding traditions and conventions in construction as well as decoration. Carolyn Suneja is a working bookbinder, and owner of the Tea Cup Bindery in Menomonee Falls. She trained for three years at the Book Restoration Company in Kenosha with bookbinder James Twomey, and specializes in designed bindings using leather inlays, blind tooling and gold tooling.

Fascinating Facts: Exploring the Myths and Mysteries of Judaism Like many faiths, Judaism has a cultural literacy. Those who do not share these critical bits of knowledge may find themselves mistaken about Jewish values, or feel confused and left out in Jewish social settings and while reading Jewish books. Learn the central ideas of Jewish faith, custom and the commandments, while you develop an appreciation of the small details as well as the big picture of Jewish thought and practice.

PRESENTER

Rabbi Yisroel Lein was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and attended yeshivas across the globe, including New York, Toronto and Israel, learning his Talmudic and Rabbinic studies. Rabbi Lein has been working with Jews around the world, running Passover seder, holiday services and Jewish summer camps in Ukraine, London, Denmark and Oklahoma.

iPads for Beginners Learn the basics of how to use your iPad. Learn how to set up your email, manage apps, sync your iPad to your computer using iTunes, use the Cloud, take and share photos, use the calendar app and set reminders. Search for apps and share your favorites. Whether you own one already, or just want to find out if an iPad would be useful to you, please join us – all steps and instruction will be shown on a large screen. Note: An iPad is not required for the class, but is recommended.

Sarah Gentz is an elementary educator who has taught for the last 15 years. She has written grants for numerous schools to increase the technology available for students, and has provided one-on-one training for teachers on how to use iPads and other technology. She is currently teaching kindergarten in Slinger where her students use their iPads daily.

Vicars of Christ: The Papacy Through the Centuries Gain an introduction to the history of the papacy – the world’s most visible and significant religious office, and the most distinctive institution of the Catholic Church. Lectures illustrated with PowerPoint emphasize the development of the papacy by focusing on a few of the most significant popes to have occupied the “Chair of Peter” over the past two thousand years.

Neal Pease is a professor of history and current department chair at UWM. He teaches courses in Polish and central European history, as well as history of Catholicism and the papacy. His most recent book won multiple awards as best book of the year in the fields of Polish studies and history of the Catholic Church.

The Provocative Nietzsche Explore the theories of late 19th century German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche. Find yourself challenged by his critiques of traditional religious and ethical understandings, and discuss the meanings of some of his most prominent concepts behind “God is dead!”, “Will to Power,” and “Beyond Good and Evil.”

Carolyn Sweers earned a master’s degree in philosophy from Boston University and for 25 years taught philosophy and history courses at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois. After retiring in 1994, Carolyn taught older adult education programs in the Chicago area and has been teaching for Osher over the past three years.

Lyn Evans is a skilled body language expert with more than 10 years of experience in training people how to identify, interpret and use the science of non-verbal communication. Evans has worked with personnel in law, law enforcement, business and education, covering the fields of body language, lie detection, deception, interrogation and handwriting analysis.

Long-Term Care: Planning for Future Needs We are growing older as a population, and life expectancy is increasing. The correlation: the longer we live, the more likely long-term care will be needed. Learn more about long-term care services and how to cover the need, including long-term care insurance options.

Vicki Buchholz is the Medigap Helpline Services supervisor at the Board on Aging and Long Term Care – providing information and counseling on Medicare related coverages, as well as long-term care options. She has a master’s degree in community human services from UW-Green Bay, has been with BOALTC for more than 11 years, and worked as an elder benefit specialist at the county level for eight years prior, in the same field.

MMSD’s Green Infrastructure Hear about the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s green infrastructure initiatives and how they aid in urban water management. Gain an in-depth view of the MMSD system, water reclamation process, and the programs that keep the Milwaukee region’s waterways clean and healthy. Learn how you can help to preserve the area’s waterways, protect your home from flood damage and promote ecological solutions in your backyard.

Kevin Shafer is the executive director of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, and is responsible for the overall management, administration, leadership and direction of MMSD. Shafer is a civil engineer who, prior to joining MMSD, worked in private industry with an international engineering firm in Chicago and with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Soto Zen, A Buddhist Tradition Discuss the tradition of Soto Zen, a form of Mahayana Buddhism, and its emphasis upon silent sitting and letting go of thought. How does practice and study in this tradition help us understand our relation to others and the world around us? What is my real self? What prevents me from realizing it with clarity?

PRESENTER

Rev. Tonen O’Connor is a Soto Zen Buddhist priest, and the resident priest emerita of the Milwaukee Zen Center. She was ordained in 1994 and received full authorization to teach in 1999, having studied and practiced both in the U.S. and in Japan. In addition to serving at the MZC, she leads a prison sangha at Racine Correctional Institution.

Adventures in History: The World of Benjamin Franklin and His Sister Jane Benjamin Franklin is larger than life – printer, writer, stationer, scientist, statesman, inventor and more. Franklin’s biographer described him as a “harmonious human multitude.” But until Jill Lepore recently published Books of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin, few had heard of Franklin’s favorite sister. Discuss Benjamin Franklin and his world, through the lens of political, social and cultural history. Contrast his life and times with Jane’s life, from a women’s history perspective.

The Fuss Over Much Ado about Nothing Join Bruce Stark as he makes a fuss over Much Ado about Nothing. Enjoy the comedic, beguiling and witty romance of Beatrice and Benedick. Appreciate the tangled wooing, the complication of a fake death and the overcoming of villainous slander that Claudio and Hero must endure. And in doing so, explore how Shakespeare uses his masterful skills in comedies like Much Ado to bring about a neat and tidy conclusion without losing the sense of life’s open-ended complexity. As the Bard might suggest “Letting wonder seem familiar.”

Sleepless in Milwaukee Discuss sleep disorders and expand your understanding of some common types. Learn about the health implications sleep disorders have on the individual as well as the community. Finally, gain suggestions for better sleep.

Erin Cronn, RN, BSN, RPSGT, CLC, is a public health nurse with the City of Milwaukee, involved in a home visitation program that visits first-time moms and their babies. Cronn has also been a registered polysomnographic technologist (sleep tech) for more than five years, and has worked at multiple sleep labs in the Milwaukee area.

Get out and get going! Venture to various locations of interest in Milwaukee and throughout the surrounding areas.

Devil in the White City Motor Coach Tour in Chicago Join Osher Executive Director Kim Beck in exploring the compelling true story told by Erik Larson in his best-selling book, The Devil in the White City. The book spotlights two simultaneous events in Chicago history: the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 and the emergence of serial murderer Dr. Henry H. Holmes. Our day in Chicago begins with a presentation at the Chicago Architecture Foundation, featuring period photographs of the Fair and its central characters. Next, a CAF docent leads a private coach tour to locations and buildings that fairgoers would have experienced. This diverse tour stops at the street that was home to Chicago’s business and social elite during the Fair, winds past the home of Fair critic Ida B. Wells, highlights the Midway and the site of the Ferris Wheel, and stops for a short walking tour of the fairgrounds in Jackson Park. Those who have read Erik Larson’s book will learn more about the circumstances surrounding the Fair and Dr. Holmes; those who haven’t will find this tour to be a fascinating introduction to the 1893 World’s Fair and the evil Dr. Holmes.

An American System-Built Home Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright Throughout his career, Wright believed that all people, regardless of income, deserved to live in beautiful, architect-designed homes. Wright’s earliest solution to this “small house problem” was American System-Built Homes, and in 1916, six of these dwellings were built on Burnham Street in Milwaukee. Tour an 805 sq. ft. bungalow, totally restored in 2009 by Frank Lloyd Wright Wisconsin. Hear the story of Wright, ASBH and the restoration. Walk the block to view the other dwellings, and perhaps visit one of the duplexes currently undergoing restoration. Note: The house is not wheelchair accessible.

Milwaukee’s Magnificent Downtown Architecture Spend a pleasant evening exploring the wealth of Milwaukee’s downtown architecture with Osher Executive Director Kim Beck. Examine City Hall, the Mitchell and Mackie buildings, Iron Block, Wisconsin Gas Building, the Northwestern Mutual buildings, Milwaukee Center, the Federal Building and the Pfister Hotel. Walk down a commercial street that has been virtually unchanged in over 125 years.

A Tasty Tosa Food Tour Savor the flavors of the Village of Wauwatosa, all while enjoying the area’s European details first brought by settlers in the mid-1800s. Begin the tour at the delightful Tosa Famers Market. From there, enjoy delectable tastings from local restaurants, including an Italian pizzeria, a French café and a restaurant with Dutch influence, including visits to wine, olive oil and chocolate shops. Calvary Cemetery Lecture and Tour Learn about Calvary Cemetery and Chapel with a lecture by local architect Keith Schultz, followed by a guided tour through the grounds the following day. Calvary Cemetery is the oldest Catholic cemetery in Milwaukee. It was consecrated by Milwaukee’s first Archbishop, John Henni, in 1857, and is the final resting place of many famous Milwaukeeans. Designed by Erhard Brielmaier, it rests on one of Milwaukee’s highest elevation points, providing spectacular views of the city. The Romanesque chapel was built of cream city brick in 1899, and was intended for services, prayer and as a mausoleum for clergy.

Collections of Significance at UWM Libraries Tour UWM’s American Geographical Society Library – one of the foremost geographical collections in North America, and the largest in a university setting. Gain an overview of more than one million items including maps, atlases, photographs and digital spatial data, with curator Marcy Bidney. Next, see UWM’s Special Collections with librarian Max Yela. Consisting primarily of rare and special printed materials dating back as far as the 15th century, the collection supports a wide range of research and teaching activities in the arts, humanities and social sciences, and some pieces just might surprise you.

Janesville Rotary Gardens & Lincoln-Tallman House Bask in the beauty of Janesville Rotary Gardens’ 20 acres on a guided walking tour. See dramatic, formal gardens in Japanese, English Cottage, Italian, Scottish and French Formal styles, as well as Prairie, Shade, Woodland, and Fern and Moss gardens. After lunch on the terrace, travel to the Lincoln-Tallman House, Janesville’s most iconic historical structure. UWM is hosting an exceptional conference this summer that explores how creative engagement can transform the care of older adults. Participants

from across the country will attend to share their knowledge and experiences in this emerging area of research and practice. Conference

organizers are extending a special invitation to Osher members to participate in two sessions. The first is a screening and discussion of the

critically-acclaimed documentary on the Penelope Project. The film tells the story of how Homer’s Odyssey was used by long-term residents, artists, and students to explore the possibilities of using creativity and learning in coping with memory loss. The second session is a day-long workshop

where Osher members can actively participate with other conference attendees in turning their stories into art.

ParkingThe School of Continuing Education is located downtown in the Plankinton Building of Grand Avenue Mall. For the most convenient access, enter the

Grand Avenue parking structure off Plankinton Ave., and park your car on the 2nd or 3rd level at the north end of the structure, closest to the mall entrance. From the parking structure, you’ll enter the building on the 2nd floor and cross the rotunda. Take the elevators on the north side of the building (closest to Wisconsin Ave.) to the 6th or 7th floor (in-person registration/offices or classrooms, respectively).

For a wheelchair accessible entrance, park your car on the 4th level at the north end of the parking structure. From there, enter the building and take the elevator to the 2nd floor. Cross the rotunda to the elevators on the north side of the building (closest to Wisconsin Ave.) and take these elevators to the 6th or 7th floor.
