Meet The TEAMS

University of Wales Trinity Saint David's (UWTSD) involvement with motorsport began in 1995 when we raced in the local Welsh Sport and Saloon Car Championship with a Darrian T90. The following year we moved into the National GT Championship with two Darrian GT3 Cars and won the GT Championship in that year. We continued to compete in GT racing for a further three years in the GT1 and GT2 classes. Since then we have competed in a number of different disciplines, including Locost, Formula Vauxhall, Formula 4 and Monoposto circuit racing, as well as rallying, sprinting and hill climbing. We started the world’s first degree programme in Motorsport with a BEng in Motorsport Engineering in 1998, and since then we have developed HND, BSc and MEng programmes in Motorcycle and Motorsport Engineering.

“The Monoposto Racing Championship has been going since 1959 and it has always been intended as a championship for single-seated racing cars with a fair degree of engineering in them. So we are actually very keen to get teams involved that are able to bring engineering and technology to the cars. We think that universities are ideal in this respect and so we are very keen to encourage them to race with us. I think people are interested in seeing a group of young people running a car and seeing how they go about it. I think they are doing a very good job, and have already done a couple of all-nighters on the car. After technical difficulties on the Saturday, they worked all night on it to get it going again for the Sunday and I think that has commanded a lot of respect in the paddock. I think they are seen as real triers and a very professional outfit. I would like to see a lot more university teams and students involved, particularly in championships like Monoposto which do allow innovation and engineering into the cars – I think it would be good for students. I think it would help get people involved in engineering of race cars in a very practical way and I think it can only have a positive outcome.”

Pembrey CircuitMany of our engineering students spend time at Pembrey Circuit, an outstanding motorsport venue just 40 minutes from the Swansea Campus. The Pembrey facilities include a UWTSD race workshop with full vehicle preparation equipment, skid-pan area and access to the full circuit when available. The circuit hosts car, bike, truck and drift racing, rallies, sprints and rallycross events.

Team V4 Racing

Team V4 Racing is a completely student-managed project run out of the UWTSD, Swansea Campus. Team V4 has created the opportunity for us to apply the work we do on the course to a practical output.This enables us to see the effects of their developments, engineering in the real world and on the race track. A priceless experience to take beyond the degree after graduation and into industry.

We carry out all aspects of the project from engine building and tuning, carbon fibre manufacture, and all the general organisation of the race weekends. The bike the team run is a Honda VFR400. It is highly modified with modern suspension systems and it runs a full 2D Data Recording system which is used by the students to learn from as part of the course. The core group of students who began the project invested huge amounts of their own time and money into the project simply to gain experience and see the work they do perform on the race track.

The project has gone from strength to strength and, during 2013, Team V4 Racing competed in the BMCRC EDIasia Formula 400 Championship, one of the most competitive 400cc championships in the UK. The team got off to an amazing start, taking three 1st positions in their first race weekend at Pembrey. Throughout the remainder of the season the team experienced both highs and lows as well as further podiums, finishing the season with 11 podium finishes, finishing 6th overall in the championship out of a total of 42 riders.

After such a successful 2013 season there is no doubt that Team V4 Racing is pushing for the 2014 EDIasia F400 title. To do that we are looking to work with the best in the industry and cementing partnerships with companies only helps us in the pursuit of that goal. As engineering students we are looking to gain a better insight into the industry to which we will hopefully one day contribute.This has, and always will, be the overall goal of Team V4 Racing to provide all involved with a unique experience and the knowledge to take forward into their careers.

Team MCRThe initial Monoposto project was originally conceived by university lecturer Tim Tudor, from the Faculty of Applied Design and Engineering, to improve experience and expand the portfolio of activities undertaken by the University’s students. Started as a student-run project, Swansea Motorsport had backing from the University and competed in the Monoposto Championship in 2013 after two successful seasons in Formula 4.

For the 2014 season, the team of students and staff who gained two podiums and two Driver of the Day trophies in the Monoposto Championship decided to retire the car and move on to a new challenge: The Sports 2000 Championship, running an MCR race car.

The team, comprising Engineering and Motorsport Management students, has the opportunity to gain experience of developing and running a 2 litre sports racing car in a real-world environment against professional teams. Students can put theoretical knowledge into practical use and gain skills for their future careers in industry.

The new series and car makes the project very exciting and the staff and students are looking forward to competing in the championship.

Current Student Projects

The MCR is used by Faculty of Applied Design and Engineering for group projects and dissertation work, this can be anything from designing new parts or changing set ups and investigating the effects of this. This often requires taking the car to Pembrey to conduct testing on the circuit and on the skid pan.

“My involvement last season with the Formula Renault team, and again this season with the MCR, has been by far my favourite experience whilst being at University. I am currently on my first year of the BEng in Motorsport Engineering and Design, having completed the Foundation entry last year. Not only do the projects allow some real life experience of the theory learned during lectures, but it also provides the opportunity to make you more of a unique graduate when leaving University, by providing students like me with real life experience of competing within a team at real races in proper championships. Team ATVTeam ATV was formed in 2013 by a group of students keen to support Harry Hinkley in National Quad Racing. The University was happy to support the team at their Swansea campus as it gives the students involved a real grassroots Motorsport experience. 2014 will see the team race in the NORA MX and British ACU Under-21s Championships. The 2014 series will be officially known as ‘The Connor Smith Six-Sixty British Under-21s Championship’.

Harry Hinkley – Team ATV

Harry started racing at age eight in 2002 with Norasport on a Cobra 100; he rode this for a year until he gained sponsorship from Quadzilla. The next three years Quadzilla developed a water cooled 100cc quad that was battling with the top riders until 2006 when the work came to fruition and Harry and the team took the 100cc British Championship. Unfortunately, due to financial problems, Harry was unable to continue racing and gave up in 2007. After years of not racing Harry spent the summer of 2012 building an LTR 450 supplied by Quadzilla which sparked his passion for motorsport, Harry competed in three rounds in the NORA MX championship at clubman level.

In September 2012 Harry enrolled on HND Motorsport Engineering course. At the end of the 2012 season Quadzilla supplied Harry with a LTR 450 along with WK Bikes who supplied him with aftermarket parts and a 2010 RMZ 450 engine. Harry then built up this quad to race in the 2013 season at NORA MX. The highlights of his 2013

included a round win at Foxhills and another second place.However, due to a small technical issue in the last round, Harry missed out on third place in the championship and dropped down to fifth.

In preparation for the 2014 season Harry contacted Roger Dowden at UWTSD, Swansea Campus, and confirmed storage for the quad at the University. In late 2013 Harry and his team member Lee Evans stripped and rebuilt the RMZ 450 engine, including a new gearbox, piston, conrod, seals and bearings. The LTR frame was then stripped down and brought to Swansea where the frame was powder coated. The frame has been rebuilt by Harry, Lee, Andrew Raistrick, Ed Grove and Kier Neyland-Davis using new bushes and bearings making it an almost new quad.

The team hope to develop the handling of the vehicle, designing a new subframe and improving the engine with a close ratio gearbox. They aim to redesign the intake system and map the ECU ignition. The team utilised the facilities of the University alongside the expertise of the lecturers.

Loco Espada TeamWe are a small team of enthusiastic Motorsport Engineering and Management students who built the 998cc Locoblade from scratch in the University workshops. The car is driven by one of our instructors, David Campion, and is competing in the WAMC Hill Climb and Sprint Championships through the 2014 season.

FORMULA STUDENT Project 2012The University have been part of Formula Student in the past but withdrew in recent years due to the number of competitions UWTSD were involved with. The car, however, remains part of the student facilities to enable practical hands-on experience for testing theory learned in lectures and as a resource for project work.

“Formula Student project gave me the first hands-on experience with competitive vehicles, and I enjoyed working with the formula student car from the first day, from the assembly all the way to the testing track. All the engineering and mechanical knowledge I received from the team, our advisers and lecturers during the study year inside the project gave me good initial insight into the motorsport world. After all, that is what motorsport engineering is all about, hands-on experience and learning to apply many different engineering methods and theories in reality.

I also enjoyed learning new facts about the engine and the powertrain system of the car and applying the knowledge received in the development process. I also enjoyed working with metal and carbon fibre, making parts for the car. The team had its ups and downs along the way, but we learned from mistakes and went on because, other than

the competition, car and safety rules, there are very few limits to what you can do and achieve. That is another thing I like about Formula Student, you can do almost everything, with a reasonable justification of course.

Motorsport's future looks very ‘green’ and because Formula Student competition has also recently switched to hybrid or fully electrical vehicles, I would definitely like to see and also work on a UWTSD hybrid or fully electric Formula Student car to learn about electrical systems and their application in racing and make a theory into reality.”

Team Formula RenaultUWTSD Formula Renault Race Team consists of students and staff from the Schools of Automotive Engineering, plus students from the Motorsport Management and Business courses. In the 2014 season, the car will be competing in the Saint Cross Electronics Mono Championship, ‘Club Racing Grand Prix Style’. Since 1959, the Monoposto Racing Club has provided cost-effective single-seater racing. The club is the largest single-seater club in the United Kingdom. There are six different classes within the championship.

This project follows from the success of the previous team that ran the car in the Formula 4 and Monoposto Championships from 2010-13. As a new team with a new driver, our ambitions for the upcoming 2014 season is to develop the car’s performance to enable us to fight for podiums and race wins.

Current Student ProjectStefanos Theocharis – Dyno testing the dampers

Work on the dampers consisted of: a complete strip, overall clean and inspection of dampers components checking for damagea replacement of compression and rebound piston’s shimsan oil change a replacement of all O-rings and oil sealsa nitrogen gas change - pressure manufacturer recommendations

The adjustment range has to be checked as performance drops, or due to any changes across the working range. For the Formula Renault, the rear dampers have to be matched on adjustment to be sure that their reaction is consistent.

Once the dyno session had been completed, the software provided a full printout of the traces showing the dampers’ characteristics and the adjustment range. If the damper was not working properly, the traces would show up the faults through traces variation.

“I previously worked for Lamborghini GT3 and Porsche GT3 as a mechanic. I decided to attend university as I had no qualifications and would not have been able to progress in my career. I chose UWTSD because of their excellent links to industry that enabled me to secure a six-week placement with McLaren over the summer, working within the gearbox division. Experience gained during your degree is invaluable, and so being part of the Formula Renault team, as Team Manager, has offered me additional managerial skills and taught me how to pass on my knowledge to less experienced members of the team effectively.”

“My role was to prepare the bodywork for the new livery. The first job was to get all of the panels back to a smooth surface which could be painted over. The cracks in the bodywork had to be repaired, this was done with a gel coat for the smaller cracks and fibreglass for the larger cracks. Any previous repairs also had to be restored.”

The new Euro IV is smaller, lighter, programmable, and has a built in data logger and the ability to have launch control.
