Eruption of Mt. ST Helens

On May 18, 1980 – Mt. St Helen’s erupted,. A earthquake registered 5.1 on the Richter scale. 230 square mile of forest was blown down by the eruption.

U.S Hockey Teams Beat Russia in the Olympic Games 1980 Olympic- U.S

men hockey game defeats Russia in Epic Semifinal men’s hockey game. All the members of U.S hockey team are college players.

Death of John Lennon

He is a lead singer of the Beatles. On Monday, December 8, 1980- Mark David shot him outside of his home in NYC.

She is the first supreme court justice. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan. She showed a very conservation side.

Attempt Assassination of Reagan

On March 30, 1981- 69 days into Reagan’s presidency. John Hinckley Jr. attempted the assassination. Reagan suffered a punctured lung.

Cocaine became lifestyle drug of the 1980s. It used for fun recreational drug or was considered the epidemic with 22 million people abused cocaine.

September 1,1983- air liner from Seoul Korea bound for Alaska wrongly navigated in USSR Airspace. Shot down by Soviet Jets.

Sally Ride

Sally Ride is a great role model for a lot of women. On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride became the first women to go into space. She also a member of a team to investigate the tragic explosion of the Challenger itself.

Beirut Terrorist Attack

October 23,1983- terrorist suicide bombers attacked the US Beirut complex. Killed 299 American and French Servicemen.

CD was officially launched in the UK on 1 March. It was hailed as the most important development in the recorded music industry since the long playing record.

Olympics In Los Angeles

The Soviet, in retaliation for the US boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games, boycotted the 1984 Olympics. Along with the Soviet Union, East Germany, and Cuba, fourteen other countries boycotted the Games. Mary Lou Retton, who received perfect scores in her final two events, became the 1st American woman to win an individual gold medal in gymnastics.

Vanessa Williams

She is an American pop-R&B recording artist, producer, model and actress. In 1983, she became the first woman of African American descent to be crowned Miss American.

We Are The World

U.S.A for African was the name that forty five musicians used when they recorded the hit single, WE ARE THE WORLD, in 1985. The song was a #1 hit in the US and in the UK in April that year.

It is the freebase form of cocaine that can be smoked. It may also be termed rock, hard, iron, cavvy, base or just crack. The U.S crack epidemic refers to the surge of crack houses and crack cocaine use in major cities in the U.S between 1984 and 1990.

He was a first team All American college basketball player. He was selected by the Boston Celtics as the second overall in the 1986 NBA Draft on June 17, but died 2 days later from arrhythmia induced by a cocaine overdose.

Nintendo can be translated from Japanese to English as “leave luck to heaven”. Nintendo developed into a video game and it is the most influential in the industry.

Challenger Disaster

January 28, 1986-cold windy day at Cape Canaveral Airspace Base in Florida. Challenger was launched at 11:38am. At 11:40am-the challenger had its 1st problem. The shuttle exploded on live TV shortly after. Causes of explosion was a flaw in rocket’s booster system.

AIDS

Stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

It is the final stage of HIV disease, which cause severe damage to the immune system.

Supermodel GIA

She was a top US fashion model of the late 1970s and early 1980s. She suffered from drug addiction and die at age 26. She be known as the first famous woman who die of AIDS

“Baby Jessica”

The baby who fell down an abandoned water well while playing one afternoon in her back yard in Midland, TX. It took 58 hours to rescue her and brought her out safety.

Michael Dukakis

65th and 67th Governor of Massachusetts- the longest serving governor in Massachusetts history.

Democratic presidential nominee in 1988.

Soviet Leave Afghanistan

The final troop withdrawal started on May 15, 1988 and ended on February 15, 1989 under the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Due to the interminable nature of the war, the conflict in Afghanistan has sometimes been referred to as the “Soviet Union’s Vietnam War”.
