On May 18, 1980 – Mt. St Helen’s erupted,. A earthquake registered 5.1 on the Richter scale. 230 square mile of forest was blown down by the eruption.

U.S Hockey Teams Beat Russia in the Olympic Games 1980 Olympic- U.S

men hockey game defeats Russia in Epic Semifinal men’s hockey game. All the members of U.S hockey team are college players.

Sally Ride is a great role model for a lot of women. On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride became the first women to go into space. She also a member of a team to investigate the tragic explosion of the Challenger itself.

Olympics In Los Angeles

The Soviet, in retaliation for the US boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games, boycotted the 1984 Olympics. Along with the Soviet Union, East Germany, and Cuba, fourteen other countries boycotted the Games. Mary Lou Retton, who received perfect scores in her final two events, became the 1st American woman to win an individual gold medal in gymnastics.

He was a first team All American college basketball player. He was selected by the Boston Celtics as the second overall in the 1986 NBA Draft on June 17, but died 2 days later from arrhythmia induced by a cocaine overdose.

Challenger Disaster

January 28, 1986-cold windy day at Cape Canaveral Airspace Base in Florida. Challenger was launched at 11:38am. At 11:40am-the challenger had its 1st problem. The shuttle exploded on live TV shortly after. Causes of explosion was a flaw in rocket’s booster system.

It is the final stage of HIV disease, which cause severe damage to the immune system.

She was a top US fashion model of the late 1970s and early 1980s. She suffered from drug addiction and die at age 26. She be known as the first famous woman who die of AIDS

Soviet Leave Afghanistan

The final troop withdrawal started on May 15, 1988 and ended on February 15, 1989 under the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Due to the interminable nature of the war, the conflict in Afghanistan has sometimes been referred to as the “Soviet Union’s Vietnam War”.
