INTRODUCTION
A cluster of small gold prospects located in the south-east quadrant
of Jacobson Township in the Wawa region of western Ontario has provided the
nucleus for a ground acquisition by which a systematic investigation of the
environment could be implemented.
in a first stage of exploration, a magnetic survey has been completed
to provide a primary base to a data assemblage. A certain amount of V.L.F.
traversing has been conducted cojointly to assist in this build-up. The
results of this initial work are presented and discussed herein.

DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY
The property under discussion is composed of 38 unpatented claims,
all contiguous and all nominally of 40 acres. The group they form is rather
irregularly, shaped but has a long axis which runs virtually E-W (D*g. No.
EIC-1523). It occurs in the south-east corner of Jacobson Township, District
of Algoma, Sault Ste. Marie Mining Division, Ontario, butting against the east
township boundary but not crossing it. In more specific detail, the claims
involved are identified as follows:
Claim Nos.

The ground encompassed by this holding is fairly lumpy with fair rock
exposure. Cover tends to be thin generally. It is a terrain typically well
forested with birch, poplar and spruce, interspersed with low ground following
the creeks. Lakes are not common; the largest is Old Cabin Lake at the property
east boundary where it occupies roost of claim no. SSM 706431.
Access is by overland trail from the Goudreau - Lochalsh road less
than 2 miles to the north and north-west, the CPR main transcontinental line

DETAILS OF SURVEY
In preparation for the geophysical surveying, and the geological
work to come, a grid of lines spaced 400* apart and oriented true N-S has
been cut, chained and picketed to the property limits. Stations have been
set out every 100' on traverse lines. A main base-line and two parallel tie-
lines have been put in to control the network, as well as provide local access.
the magnetic coverage has been effected at 50' reading intervals with
an EDA model PPM 350 magnetometer supplying total intensity values at an
intrinsic sensitivity of 0.1 gamma. A practical accuracy of about 3 gammas
has been maintained by the contemporary use locally of a base station magnet
ometer, EDA model PPM 400, collecting measures of the terrestrial field at
20 sec. intervals.
The v.L.F. (radio) em. traversing for its part has been achieved with
the employment of a Geonics model Em-16 receiver tuned to the broadcast fieldi
of NAA (24.0 kHz). Measurements of the in-phase and quadrature components of
the secondary vertical field in effect have been obtained with this instrument
at 100' intervals along traverses to a sensitivity of l \ and to an estimated
accuracy of 2* of the primary field.
All acquired data have been appropriately corrected and posted i n
plan. The magnetics have been direct!., toured, the V.L.F. results presented
primarily in profiles and subsequently, after filtering and differentiation
(the Fraser filter), as contours, the latter implicating the in-phase data
only. All outgrowth presentations are given at a plan scale of l" s 200'.

DISCUSSION OF RESULTS
The magnetic survey results give fairly clear indications of a
layered sequence of iron formations crossing the property from east to west
(Dwg. Nos. EIC-1526A,B). These are not particularly strong in themselves, nor
individually continuous too very far, but they are typical of say, interbedded
iron-rich tuffs in a basaltic environment. The latter on this evidence is
far more extensive than published geology provides (ODM Map No. 498, Goudreau -
Lochalsh Area, 1940).
However within the volcanic domain as provided by this same geology,
the magnetics otherwise provide few distinctions that can be relied upon. Part
of the problem is that the three main rock-types distinguished in mapping,
according to their outcrop reconciliation to the present grid, are in themselves
inconsistent in their magnetic signatures, but part of the problem also lies in
the quality of the present contouring which is not adequate for the purpose.
A general relief of about 1000 gammas characterizes the grid, area exclusive of
the iron formations.
Still some attempt has been made to discriminate the broad rock
units underlying the grid (Dwg. No. EIC-1525A.B). The interesting thing to
emerge from this exercise is the recognition that other intrusions are possible,
specifically diabase dykes on a number of headings but more intriguingly the
occasional felsic plug. These latter represent a pure speculation at this
time; but quartz porphyry stocks are not unknown in the region, indeed several
small plugs exist within l mile of the property to the north.
Of the possible locations for plugs in the present grid area, perhaps
the most promising is that which is inferred to centre upon 5S/8E. This is
because on the evidence of the geophysics there is a shear flanking its southern
edge which displays an above-average conductivity locally. The circumstance

may mean no more than an improved clay development along the fault plane here
but it also holds out the chance that weak sulphides may be similarly emplaced.
Outcrops of basic volcanics occur in the vicinity, and it is plain that iron
formation horizons exist close by. A NNW bearing mafic dyke is seen to trans
gress the setting to the intrusive's west side.
It is a reasonably prospective combination of lithology and structure
for gold occurrence, but there are other localities in the area which are poten
tially as go d but about which less is known. This stems primarily from the
fact that tiu amount of V.L.F. surveying so far completed on the property is
quite limited, it covering in effect the strip of claims constituting the
Chubb option only (Dwg. No. EIC-1527). In this abbreviated programme, a shear
system was delineated running from 12E to 32W before it weakened and angled off
the grid to the south (Dwg. No. EIC-1524). A parallel anomaly running from
20W to 36W hinted at a displaced feathering. However, the evidence for cross-
structures in these data proved not very pronounced, save for an axial break
striking NW-SE interacting with main shear lineament circa 16W/-550S.
Nevertheless, there is little doubt that the structural composition
of the property would be considerably elaborated upon if V.L.F. surveying were
extended to the remainder of the grid, especially if it were at the same time
to include observations (on a cross-grid pattern) from a second transmitter,
viz. NSS (21.4 kHz), Annapolis, Maryland. There is much yet to learn,
particularly since the magnetics suggest that breaks bearing NNW to N are a
feature of the area, and these from wider empirical experience could well
happen to be a key to any gold occurrence here.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
It is concluded from the completed geophysical surveys reported
herein that a suite of weak oxide iron formations cross the property in
association with mafic flows and tuffs. They have suffered interruption, and
modest deformation in this distance and are almost surely sheared and to some
extent altered. The possibilities for gold occurrence appear good, especially
if several perceptions of porphyry intrusion and cross-faulting turn out to be
valid for the area.
Before any thoughts of drilling are seriously entertained however,
several prior and logical steps command themselves. These are all designed
to enlarge geologic knowledge of the grid area and to define specific localities
within this context to a sufficic-nt refinement so that test drilling, if
warranted, can be realistically laid out. Plainly, one such preliminary is to
complete a programme of outcrop mapping and prospect sampling as soon as
this becomes feasible, but from the geophysical standpoint, it can be specific
ally recommended now that:
i) the V.L.F. (NAA) coverage already initiated on the Chubb Option
be continued across the rest of the claims;
ii) trial traversings of the BL and the tie-lines be undertaken
utilizing the primary transmission of MSS. If successful in
detecting some of the NNW faulting suspected in the area, con
sideration be given to an extended coverage of the grid;
iii) the presently submitted magnetics be up-graded by a more sensi
tive contouring of the lower range values which make up the vast
bulk of the data set and form the host background to the noted
iron formations;

Lv) a revised interpretation be carried out after incorporation of
the results of the above recommendations into the existing data.
Eventually geophysics and geology will need to be reconciled, and
after that stage is completed, the property will be readied for the drilling
decision. On present indications, it is predicted there will emerge more
than one prospective situation worthy of the testing.
