Youth Commissioners Needed
The conservation district is actively looking for high school students who are in-terested in becoming youth commissioners. Youth Com-missioners participate in vari-ous conservation related ac-tivities throughout the year such as: Beach Sweep, Farm City, and Arbor Day. Youth members also help judge the essay, poster, poetry, and coloring contest. If you know a high school student who would be interested please contact the district office.
Farm-City Week was established in 1955 to encourage understanding, increase cooperation and
solidify relations between rural and urban residents. Farm-City programs are designed to promote
a better understanding between agricultural and urban communities. Farm-City week this year is
November 18-24th.
The District has “For the Good of the People” books that teachers may utilize for their students
during Farm-City Week. These books are filled with fun facts
about farmers and ranchers. If you are a teacher and you would
like some of these books to give to your students please call the
district office
at 803-696-
3409.
Please call
early as we
only have a
limited sup-
ply.

District Employees Available for Arbor Day Activities On April 10, 1872, Arbor Day became a state holiday, because ideal conditions for plant-
ing vary throughout the nation, Arbor Day is celebrated at different times of the year,
depending on the climate of the state. Arbor Day for the State of South Carolina was
created by legislation in 1934. We celebrate on the first Friday in December because that
is the time in South Carolina when plants are dormant, there is plenty of rainfall, and a
tree's roots suffer less from the shock of transplanting.
The first Friday in December is a time not only to celebrate Arbor Day in South Carolina
but also to think about the benefits planted trees can provide our homes, schools, and
institutions; our cities and towns; and of course our forests. If your school/class would
like to have a District Representative come and discuss with your students the im-
portance of Arbor Day, please contact the district office at 803-696-3409.
ENVIROSCAPE
DEMONSTRATIONS
FOR K-3RD GRADERS
The Conservation District has an Envi-
roScape that illustrates Nonpoint Source Pollu-
tion. Nonpoint sources contribute a great deal to
the pollution in our water bodies. The combined
effect of pollution from many small sources can
have a real impact on the quality of our shared
water resources. The three dimensional Envi-
roScape model is engaging and effective, creat-
ing a real sense of understanding through expe-
rience and hands-on demonstration.
If you are interested in having a District Rep-
resentative give
an EnviroScape
demonstration
to your class,
please call the
office at 803-
696-3409.
The District Office has
education materials
available for your class!
All you have to do is
ask. We keep a limited
number of booklets in
the office so call today!
