FROM THE HEADMASTER

200 YEARS OF MARISTS

GROWTH MINDSET

P&F WELCOME DRINKS

Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

On 2 January 1817, Marcellin Champagnat welcomed Jean-Baptiste Audras and Jean-Marie Granjon into a rented home in the town of La Valla in France. These two men became the first Marist Brothers and later that year these two Brothers began to teach in what was the first Marist school. This Bicentenary of Marist life and mission is a cause of joy and hope for all Marists as we continue to make Jesus known and loved. As this new year commences and we begin our celebrations of the Marist Bicentenary we pray that Mary, our Good Mother will continue to be our guide and companion in our work with the young people we serve:

Mary, dawn of the new times We thank you because you have always done

everything among us And you continue doing it down to today.

We place ourselves confidently in your hands and abandon ourselves to your tenderness.

We also entrust to you each of the persons who, like us, feel privileged to bear your name.

We renew this day our consecration to you As well as our firm intention to contribute to building a Church which reflects your face.

You, source of our renewal, accompany our fidelity, as you accompanied those who

preceded us. On this the bicentenary for all Marists in the way

of St Marcellin, We feel your presence next to us and for that

we give you thanks.

Amen.

I have been speaking with the staff and students about the importance of having a Growth Mindset. This expression was coined by the American education researcher Carol Dweck. Carol explains that the brain is like a muscle. This link is to a brief clip of Carol explaining the Growth Mindset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiiEeMN7vbQ&t=24s

The more we exercise it the stronger it gets. When we try something that we have never done before we learn by asking questions. As we learn our brain forms connections and actually grows. Over the last three years I have seen the amazing work that students of Marist have completed. The 2016 HSC results showed that our boys can achieve great results. At Marist we are developing our learning culture. I believe that a growth mindset is the attitude to learning that our teachers and students need. All of our students are able to improve their learning. We all need to encourage them in having self-belief and we, as a school community, also need this self-belief to know that we as a community can grow.

This Friday afternoon we are meeting with the Year 7 parents at 5.30 pm in the Hall. Directly following this the Parents and Friends have arranged for Welcome Drinks. I hope you will be able to join us. The Welcome Drinks is for all parents and an opportunity for us to welcome new parents. Tony Duncan Headmaster

COMMUNICATION

A very warm welcome to the new school year, especially to our beginning Year 7 students and new students to Years 8 to 12. The year has started at its usual frenetic pace. The boys have already participated in a very successful Swimming Carnival and the weeks ahead include the Commencement Mass, Welcome to Year 7 parents and the Year 7 Camp. We also welcome a number of new teaching staff to the College joining us in our dynamic Catholic community of learners.

The College community recently celebrated the academic successes of 2016 at our first Headmaster’s Assembly. This was an opportunity to congratulate the HSC class of 2016 and recognise the outstanding efforts of the boys in Years 7, 8 and 9 last year. Building on the achievements of last year, the College is continuing its emphasis on the learning agenda and high expectations. Success breeds success and along with hard work, determination and a resilient approach to their learning, the Marist boys are well placed to continue to achieve to their full potential. I encourage all boys to make the most of every learning opportunity, challenge yourself, challenge your peers to take that one more step forward.

The College theme for 2017 is Unity. The students, in developing the theme for this year, placed great emphasis on the unity of the College in all aspects of College life - the religious, academic, well being and extra curricular. Unity calls for the Marist community to work and support each other in all endeavours.

The College pastoral programme is delivered to the boys in year groups. In supporting the vertical House system, the pastoral programme aims to address and support year groups with age appropriate content and themes. The pastoral lessons will take place often as an alternate to the Headmaster’s Assembly on Wednesday Period 1.

Student attendance remains a focus of the College in 2017. The research continues to support a strong correlation between student attendance and academic achievement in all years. I strongly encourage parents to ensure that regular contact is made with the College when your son is absent. It is recommended, that where possible, all appointments should be made after school hours and during the holiday breaks.

Thank you to parents and students for the encouraging way we have begun the school year in regards to uniform. Please refer to the College diary for the uniform and grooming guidelines and expectations. As a College community, I would ask all boys to ensure they comply with the uniform and presentation requirements. During the first week of school a number of boys have been asked to address areas such as haircuts, socks that fit and new shirts. Parents, your support in ensuring the boys are presented well and show pride in their uniform is vital in the ongoing partnership of schooling.

The College has many ways that communication between staff, students and parents can take place. The College diary is the first form of communication, especially for class teachers and tutors. Email contact details for the specific Leaders of Learning and House Coordinators are listed on the College website. The diary, College website and skoolbag app list calendar of events, letters to parents and proformas. Richard Grech Deputy Headmaster

SPEECH BY DUX – ERIC MANOLEV

ACADEMIC ASSEMBLY

Good morning Mr Duncan, teachers, and students. It's strange to be back at Marist after the slog of the HSC. I feel it wouldn't be appropriate to do this speech without thanking the teachers for their combined effort in making a successful year group. Their work and great teaching was intergral for our huge success in 2016. Furthermore, a huge thanks to my year group, who made Year 12 such a great year and made the HSC enjoyable. You should all be incredibly proud of what you have achieved, and I hope you can take some of what you’ve learnt and apply it to your future life and studies. I feel this time would be best used discussing how you can achieve similar, or perhaps greater, success. General Tips Firstly picking the right subjects for you plays a huge part in making the most of your HSC and can really help to improve your ATAR. Ultimately you want to pick subjects which interest you, you are challenged by and are good at. Doing this can make university easier. Deciding on university courses can be confusing and a little stressful, but the goal of the ATAR is to ultimately get you into the course you are aiming for, so you should spend the time to decide where you want to go. Take advantage of the opportunities to speak with Ms Brown about university courses and post HSC study options, these were very helpful for me in seeing my options and the pros and cons of each and she really knows her stuff. Knowing the course you want will also give you a goal to strive towards. You’ll be able to know

the approximate ATAR you will need and the level of work it will take to achieve that goal. Always be on the lookout for alternative entry pathways into university. There are a few keywords which you will hear a fair bit throughout your HSC. These are scaling, moderation, alignment, and aggregate. These are all different terms but all factor into determining your ATAR. I think it is important to understand what these mean. The board of studies has a whole webpage on how moderation works and what it is. I recommend looking at this up to understand why rankings are so important. I struggled a lot with English in Year 11, I got 51% in my end of prelim exam. What really helped me was reading exemplar essays, which showed me what I needed to do and how to analyse quotes,as well understanding that HSC English is about showing how techniques create meaning in texts. So don’t let bad marks get you down. Everybody screws up an assignment, everybody makes mistakes, everybody has those days where everything seems to be going badly, and you also have a test on that day. You’ll get through it and hopefully learn from it. Also, remember to learn from each other. Collaboration, sharing notes, and the like is important as it solidifies knowledge, highlights your weaknesses and allows you to learn off others. The bucket is not a Marist conspiracy, but an actual thing.

Math Most of you will study maths in your HSC. Math is quite different from most other subjects in that there is not much memorisation and you really have to know how to apply all the concepts. So practice with purpose when studying maths is my best advice and something I only started doing near the end of my HSC. When doing practice questions for math, you should actively be trying to challenge yourself and learn new methods or techniques for answering questions. This basically means doing the hard questions. You will know after looking at a question whether you can get full marks on it or not. If you can, skip it and try the ones which look scary.

ACADEMIC ASSEMBLY MUSIC

HSC HIGH ACHIEVERS

First Topic Content: For most HSC subjects you will study a few different areas or modules. The most important of these is the ones which you study in first and second term. The reason is that you will be tested on these more times than any other piece of content, so you want to get it right the first time and make the other times easy marks. The first topic which you learn will generally be tested in your first assignment, Mid Course Exams, HSC Trials, and then HSC Exams. For this reason, putting in the additional effort at the start of the year to write good notes on these topics, practice past paper questions, and learn all of the content and fully understand it the first time around will benefit you more than most other things. And by doing this, by the time you get to the HSC, you won’t need to study much for what is usually ¼ - ⅓ of the course, because you would have hopefully revised it 3-4 times over the year already. And trust me when it comes to studying the night before an exam, you’ll be thanking your past self. If there is one piece of advice which I would give above all else however, it is to use your class time effectively, because every period counts. You get well over 100 hours of class time per subject for your HSC. Using this time to make notes, do practice questions, and learn the content will allow you to utilise past papers to get better marks outside of class. On a final note, remember - ATAR does not quantify your self worth. Life outside of high school broadens your horizons to different skill sets that suit you, and truly, no one talks about ATAR two days after it is released. Keep this in perspective, because the friendships and experiences you make are more valuable than a couple digits. So thank you, Marist, for the 6 years of quality catholic education and I wish all my classmates and the wider Marist community success in the years to come. Eric Manolev Dux, Class of 2016.

Marist College North Shore congratulates James Tai, an academic high achiever from the HSC 2016 Music 1 class, with his exemplary HSC examination Viva Voce. James and the College were informed last week that he will be in the online program for the 2017 ENCORE concert which will acknowledge his achievement in an honour list of students. James will also receive a certificate acknowledging his academic achievement from the Board of Studies. ENCORE is a showcase of the 2016 HSC Music high achievers and the College also received the news late in 2016 that Alex Partridge was also identified as a high achiever with his HSC exam performance. This high level of academic achievement by two students in the HSC Music class is a testament to their Music teacher Rod Herbert and the support they receive from Tony McDonnell. We are very proud of their achievement and they are outstanding ambassadors for academic excellence in the arts at the College. Carolyn O'Brien Leader of Learning - CAPA

50 OUT OF 50! EXTENSION TWO ENGLISH

HSC HIGH ACHIEVER

The HSC results for English in 2016 were altogether fantastic. We achieved beyond state average in every English course offered in the HSC. In Extension One English the students achieved 7 E4s and one E3. This is outstanding! In Extension Two English we received two E3s and two E4s. And it is one of the E4s that I would like to draw your attention to. Joshua Rizk received 50 out of 50 and was ranked 9th in the State. This is an effort that Josh is to be congratulated on. Achieving this accolade simply reflects the work that Josh did in this course. As his teacher/mentor he took all advice constructively and certainly gave it a lot of thought. He discovered the real beauty of learning and simply didn’t stop. Josh became more and more intrigued as he learned more and more. It became quite contagious and this led to him developing an intense understanding of his topic. Joshua’s topic was, Man’s Mortal Remains Adrift in the Capsule of Modernism. He looked at the oeuvres of H.G. Wells, War of the Worlds, Zamyatin’s, WE and T.S Eliot’s The Waste Land. This was written as a critical response.

Josh’s work was an absolute joy to read. It was insightful, reflective and informative. He considered the period of Modernism and was able to deconstruct its effects on the world at that time. His understanding of his three texts went beyond anything that I have seen as a teacher. He demonstrated the attributes required to do well in the course and they are: extensive independent research, wide academic reading and a propensity to draft and write regularly. Again, I offer my congratulations to Josh and on behalf of the College wish him all the best in his future endeavours. Janette Durand Leader of Learning-English

3 February 2017

Dear Parents and Carers I am writing to you about a matter that is very close to my heart and of significance to our entire Catholic community. Next week, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse will commence its 50th public hearing and will focus on the Catholic Church’s response to the many issues and case studies that have been raised. As Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS), I join with other Catholic leaders in reaffirming our total commitment to respond to the recommendations of the Royal Commission in a proactive and positive way.

I also reaffirm my condemnation of the actions of any person who has caused harm and distress to a child or young person. Our care and compassion for the victims of abuse is paramount and enduring. Over the past 20 years, all schools in NSW, and in particular our Catholic schools in Sydney, have developed a range of policies and procedures to ensure that a strong, robust ‘circle of safety’ surrounds each and every one of the children in our care. Building on this position of care and safety, SCS have developed a comprehensive Child Safe Schools Framework, which will be formally launched on 29 March this year. This Framework reaffirms our system’s determination to uphold the existing values and practices in our schools that create safe and effective learning environments for all students. It also makes explicit the many ways our schools align with the recommended elements for Creating Child Safe Institutions released by The Royal Commission.

The recommended advice from the Royal Commission will continue to refine and enhance our

Page 14: V ol. 53 Issue #1 7 January 2017 - Marist College North Shore€¦ · 2016 HSC HIGH ACHIEVERS AND YEAR 7-9 SEMESTER 2 ACADEMIC AWARDS FROM THE DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING GOAL

culture of keeping children safe and secure in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Sydney. The SCS Framework will also ensure that we continue to strengthen our links with our parishes, Church agencies as well as parents and other community groups. This is core to our vision as we collectively continue to foster a culture of child safety and wellbeing in our communities. Working together with parents, parishes and schools we have ensured the safety and wellbeing of all our children. It is anticipated, in coming months, that our Child Safe Schools Framework will provide additional information and resources that will further strengthen our Child Safe culture. In particular, the SCS’ Child Safe Schools (Child Protection) Information for Parents resource can be found here.

As an educator and a parent, I consider it a privilege to work in an organisation that puts child safety first, and that has at the core of its mission the values of the Catholic Church.

Thank you for your continued support of our Sydney Catholic School community. Wishing you and your family a happy and safe year ahead. Yours faithfully

Dr Dan White Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools

The College Concert Band and Senior Jazz Ensemble are targeting performers who have been playing for a number of years on woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. We also have performance opportunities for guitarists and bassists in the College Guitar Ensemble, percussionists in College Percussion Ensemble, String Group and Vocal Ensemble. We ask your son, if possible, to prepare a piece of music of his own choice that demonstrates his musical skills for an upcoming band audition that will take place during Week 4, Term 1, starting Friday 17 February 2017. Students will be notified by Mr Herbert audition times and location before Week 4. ST MARY’S PRIMARY SCHOOL MUSIC MENTORING GROUP 2017 will see the third year of the new St Mary’s School Band Program. St Mary’s now have a Beginner group which rehearses on a Tuesday afternoon 3.20 – 4.10 and an advanced group of players who started last year which rehearse on a Friday afternoon 3.20 - 4.10. Last year the children were assisted by a dedicated group of Marist Music Mentors whom helped by playing in the instrumental sections during rehearsals. This was a great help to the children, as well giving our Marist Musicians an insight to how we teach young musicians. Again in 2017 I have invited a number of new Marist Music Mentors to assist young musicians in The St Marys’ band by playing along in the rehearsals and assisting the children on their instruments. I thank all boys for their ongoing assistance with this program last year. If you have any questions please contact Mr Herbert. I would like to thank all musicians involved in ensembles in 2017. It was a great year of music! Rodney Herbert Music Coordinator
