Rust College Receives National Recognition for Community Service,

Named to President’s Honor Roll

Rust College was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the high-est federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. The Corporation for National and Community Service, which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognized more than 700 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice. .

“Congratulations to Rust College and its students for their dedication to service and commitment to improving their local communities,” said Patrick Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “Our nation’s students are a criti-cal part of the equation and vital to our efforts to tackle the most persistent challenges we face. They have achieved impactful results and demonstrated the value of putting knowledge into practice to help renew America through service.” Community service projects such as blood and bone marrow drives, visiting the elderly, revitalizing the community and raising money to support various non-profit and charita-ble organizations helped Rust become part of the President’s Higher Education Commu-nity Service Honor Roll.

Rust Listed in Washington Monthly “Top 10”

Rust College recently received a “Top 10” award from Washington Monthly Maga-zine. The award was given after Rust was ranked in the top ten of the Social Mobil-ity category for Liberal Arts Colleges in the 2009 Washington Monthly College Guide.

According to the magazine, the Social Mobility score indicates the percentage of lower income students who graduate. Researchers at the magazine say they have data which tells them the percentage of a school’s students on Pell Grants, “which is a good measure of a school’s commitment to educating lower income kids.”

Rust College ranks 57th out of 237 liberal arts colleges, which represents the com-

bined score of the magazine’s three categories: Social Mobility, Research, and Ser-

vice.

Rust College Major Donors Receive

Stanley S. Kresge Award The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation (UMHEF) of Nashville, Tennessee annually recognizes a supporter of one of the 130 Methodist colleges across the nation. This year, the Foun-dation and Rust College honored Dr. Ralph and Barbara Hamilton for their lead gift to Rust College’s last Capital Campaign. those who work on behalf of the Foundation and the institution. The Stanley S. Kresge Award is the highest national honor given to a single individual for service to United Methodist education. The Foundation also established a $20,000 endowed scholarship in Dr. and Mrs. Hamiltons’ name to sup-port students attending Rust College. The Hamiltons were nominated by Dr. David L. United Methodist NOMADS: Service to Others Mission Volunteers Visit Holly Springs to Renovate Rust House

Rust College welcomed the NOMADS (NOMADS On a Mission Active in Divine Service) mission group to Holly Springs for three weeks in March. The group of eight worked to remodel the house at 305 Randolph Street.

NOMADS is a mission outreach ministry of the United Methodist Church through the General Board of Global Ministries. The NOMADS program offers persons with recreational vehicles (RVs) the opportu-nity to share their time and skills in United Methodist projects, including churches, camps, mission agencies, disaster areas, and local neighborhoods.

All from different parts of the country—Michigan, Tennessee, Illinois, and Pennsylvania— most of the mission volunteers only met each other when they arrived in Holly Springs. Group leaders George and Terry Lair have been involved in NOMADS for eight years and have more than 50 projects under their belt. Other volunteers have as many as 30 projects done; working three to five projects a year. The Lairs and volunteer Hazel Baker are full-time NOMADS, having sold their homes, and who travel from city to city by RV.

Mary Jo Reeves says she and her husband decided to come to Holly Springs and Rust College after hear-ing the Rust A’Cappella Choir perform at her church, First United Methodist, in Marietta, Georgia. She said when they began the project on Randolph Street, there were only four volunteers.

After seeing the deteriorated home with—among other problems—floors that had fallen through and a bathroom in terrible shape, they decided they needed some help. We sent out an SOS, and once we did, four more people came to help,” said Mrs. Reeves. Simply helping out is the main component of being involved in NOMADS.

“We enable agencies to carry out their mission,” said Hazel Baker.

A jovial group, the NOMADS made much progress on the home they are renovating and Rust College thanks them.

Local Alumna Presents Contribution

Mrs. Gloria Gipson-Suggs presented a $1,000 check to Mrs. Shirley Dillard, Director of Alumni Devel-opment. Mrs. Suggs, a 1966 gradu-ate of Rust College, says she was inspired to contrib-ute to her alma mater be-cause of the determination of former president, the late Dr. W. A. McMillan. Dr. McMillan was essential in restoring the college’s accreditation and she said

his dedication to the education of students was extraordi-nary. Mrs. Suggs is a local artist whose work has been featured on several Memphis news stations. She has also exhibited at several locations throughout the Mid-South. She has received several awards, including the 2008 Double Decker Artist Merit Award during the Double Decker Arts Festival in Oxford, Mississippi.

Rust College Community Development Corporation

Welcomes New Homeowners

The Rust College Community Development Corpora-tion (RCCDC) has helped change the lives of two local families, and is working to continue their ser-vice. The RCCDC has presented keys to two new homeowners, and hope to do the same for three more families by the end of 2010. The homes were built as part of the Martin Street Development project that is currently being com-pleted. The RCCDC helped Mrs. Fannie Warren and Mr. Dwight Harris, a 2008 graduate of Rust, obtain new homes built by Seldon Construction of Mt. Pleasant, Mississippi. Mrs. Warren received her new house keys in April 2010, while Dr. Beckley presented the Harrises—Dwight, his wife Charisse, and their children Jas-mine, Tyler and Joshua—with their keys in June 2010.

Mrs. Warren says, at first, she was hesitant to enter the First Time Homeowners Assistance Program. She says with the encouragement of family and Mr. Clencie Cotton, Director of the Rust College CDC, she was convinced to give it a chance. “They were so patient with me,” Mrs. Warren said. “Anything I needed, any questions I had – they were there to answer.” Both Mrs. Warren and Mr. Harris attended Money Smart classes and First Time Home Buyers classes for four weeks before they were able to purchase the three bedroom, two bathroom homes. Now both families are

all about decorating.

“I’m still not done,” says Charisse Harris, Dwight’s wife. “I still need to put a few odds and ends here and there.” The Harrises are al-ready making plans to add a patio to their back-yard… hopefully in time for a Labor Day house-warming party. The Martin Street homes are being completed as

part of the Building Green Initiative Develop-

ment Project, as part of the Martin Street Revi-

talization Project.

Rust College welcomed students, friends, alumni and family members of the Class of 2010 for the 144th Commencement activities held April 24-25. The 136 graduates and their families participated in the Rust College commencement traditions such as the Consecration and tree planting. The annual senior Consecration was the rite of passage for seniors preparing to leave Rust College. Dr. David L. Beckley told graduates that even though they are leaving, Rust College will always be here.

“From this day forth, you are Rust College men and women. You can’t divorce Rust… Wherever you shall rest, Rust will be there with you. Your experiences at Rust College, we hope have inspired you to accept the challenge. God will lead you as you face your challenges.” Students were given a rousing message during the Senior/Alumni breakfast held Saturday morning. Mrs. Fannie Lampley, ’69, Director of Public Relations and Information for the Institute of Community Services (ICS), Inc. spoke to students about pushing forward.

“Don’t be a second-rate version of someone else, when you can be a first-rate version of yourself,” she said.

United Methodist Bishop Receives Tower of Leadership Award

Rust College awarded the Tower of Leadership Award to Bishop Sally Dyck during Commencement April 25, 2010. Bishop Dyck served as speaker during the 144th Commence-ment Convocation. “Who are you going to be when you do what you do?” Bishop Dyck posed this question to the graduates. “What is your pur-pose-given life? Who are you?” She challenged the future leaders to answer these questions as they step into life after Rust College. The Tower of Leadership is a crystal vase which features an etched impression of the Rust College Tower. The Tower of Leadership is awarded to those affiliated with the college, who have shown outstanding leadership qualities. Bishop Dyck was ordained as a United Methodist clergy-woman in 1991, and was consecrated as Bishop in 2004. She currently leads the Minnesota Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She received theological training from Boston University School of Theology, University of Geneva/World Council of Churches, and United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
