Email the Facilities Director, Greg Bonsan, at [email protected] add in your email subject line: Rink Volunteer

This year was our biggest and best rink season since we began making ice in 2015. Your participation throughout the winter and attendance at our Sunday Family Skateevent helped make the 2019-2020 Southview Community Skating Rink year a hugesuccess! We were especially excited to see so many people come out to our FamilyDay Weekend Skate. Thank you to everyone for this great year! It takes a dedicated group of hard-working volunteers to make this happen. They taketime away from their families to make the ice, remove snow from the rinks, and planthe skating events. Please send a THANK YOU shout out to our rink volunteers byemailing a note to them via: [email protected]. NEXT SEASON ...The Southview Community outdoor skating rink has boosted the quality of life for theresidences in our community. It brings people together - neighbours, friends andfamilies in one place to enjoy FREE FUN. It showcases our community spirit - peoplewho work, play and celebrate together, get through the tough times together. It helpsus embrace winter - Canadian traditions carry-on with a little ice under their feet. In order to continue for the 2020-2021 skating season, we need your help. The biggestjob we have is to make ice and remove snow throughout the season. This doesrequire some training, of which we will provide. There will be a volunteer schedule. HOW?

ON-GOING EVENTS ... All events are currently postponed. Please reach out to each group for updates.

Our April 2-3 Casino fundraiser was cancelled due to COVID-19. AGLC has suggested that the scheduledCasino’s for the 2nd and 3rd quarters (April, May, June and July, August, September) be rescheduled. Thismeans that already financially strapped Community Associations have to wait for 9 months to a year beforegetting any Casino funds. What does this mean to us? Casino funds help support the operations and maintenance of SouthviewCommunity Hall for 2 years between casinos. What have we done? We have taken many steps to reduce and manage costs, while assuring administrative continuity when the crisisclears. We continue to seek out alternative revenue sources in light of closure during this time. How can you help? Send the AB Government a message that Community Associations, such as Southview, need funds to covermissed Casinos. Please email the Honourable Travis Toews, Minister of Finance & AGLC with this ask at:[email protected] or [email protected]. OR call (780) 415-4855.

Most residential burglaries are crimes ofopportunity. The burglars devote relatively littletime to advance planning. If their advance checkingand examination of the potential target reveals arisk greater than anticipated, they often move ontowhat they perceive to be a safer or easier target. Thus, the more the homeowner does to keep thehome from looking like an easy target, the safer thehome usually is. It is a recognized fact that good lighting is adeterrent to crime. Lighting lets the homeowner seethe pathway they take from their vehicle to thehouse. It permits them to see as they stop at thedoor to use their house keys. Effective lighting alsoforces the intruder to work in an area where he maybe exposed and reported to the police. Doors are usually the burglars’ first choice of entryinto a home. Believe it or not, some residents leaveexterior doors unlocked.... particularly children whomay be the last to leave. In other entries, theburglar simply breaks a door or a side light andreaches around to unlock a door. The failure to close and lock the garage door oftenpresents the most serious security problem in thehome.

In our current situation with physical distancing andself-isolation. It can be difficult to communicate withour neighbors. But I feel that having you and yourneighbors looking out for one another and eachother’s property is one of the best strategiesavailable. With many of our community residentsstaying at home, we can use the time to developroutines where we can conduct checks in our houseand property. Ensure doors and windows are locked, (this includesproperties with garages). That your gate and fencesare locked and closed. We have notice an increasein commercial break and enters but residential arestill happening. Many of the residential occurrencesare happening because of doors being left unlocked. Also theft from vehicles are on the rise as many ofthe offenders are just looking into vehicles andtrying door handles. A reminder to keep valuablesout of site or not have any in vehicles and ensurethe doors are locked.

COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAM

daily basis: monitor crime and disorder, analyze it for patternsand forward information to front-line members to targetedoffenders. targeted areas are identified, and the individuals responsibleare often identified. final result, although not always seen, is an arrest for theoriginal crime reported, or for other occurrences.

Why should you report a crime? It's simple: the Calgary Police Service cannotaddress crimes or hotspots if we are not notified ofthe crimes.

Typically, when a crime occurs and left unreported, thefrequency and severity of occurrences will increase if they arenot dealt with. This makes the importance of reporting crime anddisorder, regardless of severity, absolutely vital for the CPS andyour community.

How does CPS help target community crime?

THE FUTURE OF SOUTHVIEW ...

densification of inner-city communitiesdriven by the cost of providing municipal services and funding issues associated with unlimitedurban sprawl. includes proposed development types - current single-family zoned areas to allow for developmentof: duplexes, fourplexes, row housing, taller homes and low-rise condominiums mixed withcommercial enterprises.

Combined Local Growth Plan - this type of plan would combines several neighbouring communitiesunder one regional plan. (existing examples: The North Hill Communities Local Growth Planning;Westbrook Communities Local Growth Plan and Heritage Communities Local Growth Plan)

Combined groups are yet to be determined. However, an example might be Southview combined intoa region of eight communities, such as, Forest Lawn, Dover, Erin Woods, Albert Park/RadissonHeights, Penbrooke Meadows, Applewood Park and Forest Heights.

need for a Southview Community plan before the combined Local Growth Plan starts

The SVCA Board has created a planning committee which is currently reviewing and the City of Calgary's'draft version' of the Guidebook for Great Communities (also on southviewyyc.com). Highlights from our initial review include the following key items that we believe may be of interest toSouthview Community:
