vaani1- spring fest 2011
DESCRIPTION
The E-Newsletter of Spring Fest 2011TRANSCRIPT
A river, irrespective of the place it is situated, flows from the heights of hills and roots of cedar. It makes the beauty of all of it, it gets to give for it is perennial. Likewise, for us Spring Fest is a river
nurturing all of our lives from the time it commenced. The adage of Spring Fest has always been
“the spirit of youth”. What makes SF distinct is the social responsibility coming along with the frolic and
rollick of the fest. The voluntary blood donation camps, youth marathon, social case studies are persistent efforts
that instill awareness into everybody’s mind. Way back in the late fifties, the seed of Spring Fest was sown as an
inter‐hall event . This seed started germinating..and over the period of its growth, it saw the rise of many stars like Pritam, Parikrama and witnessed their transition from amateurs to
professionals. The times witnessed performances of Led‐Zeppelica, Shankar Mahadevan, Strings, Bombay Vikings
and many more. Over various years, its various features have been augmented and
intensified and what stands today is a fest that
has reached new proportions over the years.
The true spirit of youth was never so perceptible as in
the 51st edition of IIT Kharagpur’s annual social & cultural festival, Spring Fest. It is no exaggeration to
say that the this edition opened a new chapter in the history of SF as it saw participation from such diverse
regions as Punjab, Tamil Nadu and many more.
SF owes its magnetism largely to the star nights, and last year’s edition too was no different, with likes of Kailash Kher and Pritam rocking the stage. With the
Indian metal band Kryptos’ performance, Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya’s classical renderings, the
rather amusing hindi lines of Kumar Biswas, and the boisterous numbers of Freddie Bryant in Jazz like that,
there was no dearth of variety. The famous play ‘Dance like a Man’ directed by Mahesh Dattani and starring Lillete Dubey left the audience spellbound.
On the events’ front, Wildfire was the biggest hit by far featuring rock and metal bands from every nook
and corner of the country. The inter collegiate dramatics competition, Rangmanch saw excellent participation, both in terms of numbers as well as
quality. Centrifuge, the inter collegiate group dance competition, was by far the biggest crowd puller in the fest. The social component of the fest is what
sets it apart and can never be ignored, with Blood Do‐nation camp, Youth Marathon and India Calling being
among the few events organised in this respect.
It is that time of the ye
ar when the leaves
shed and the cool w
ind blows
through the night w
ith a rustling sound
, a cry. A cry eerie
enough to
uncomfort the lonely soul
walking in the pitch
blackness of the m
ain
road. Voices from the dark
ness creating a cre
epy trepidation of
an
impending happening.
Voices that appear
ed long dormant and w
ere
only a matter of time before t
hey were heard. I a
m VAANI, the voices
from the darkness. And I
’m here again to give
you the tidbits of S
pring
Fest. With a rather innovati
ve theme, HORROR, for the
52nd edition of
the fest, the muggles fro
m across the country
will feel the pulse
like
never before. The lar
gest fest of its kind,
both in magnitude a
nd partici‐
pation, in this regio
n of the country, SF
has never been thi
s gigantic be‐
fore. SF ’10 saw une
xpectedly large par
ticipation in the we
stern group
event, Wildfire. This is positi
ve sign, as far as th
e rock scene in Indi
a is
concerned. The trad
emark SF events, Cen
trifuge, Rangmanch, Sarg
am
to name a few were as b
ig as ever. Mocking Bi
rd, the moot court
competition, was a perfe
ct platform for young
lawyers to demonstrate
their arguing and p
ersuasive skills. Ru
h‐Vahen tells me that the
52nd
edition will be a ne
w chapter in the hi
story of SF. Me thinks t
here is
much reason in his sa
yings, because with
horror as the them
e, it is sure
to send shivers do
wn each one of yo
ur spines. The cou
ntdown has
begun, albeit a rath
er long one. One th
at will be well wort

I assure….!!!
Centrifuge, an inter collegiate group dance competi‐tion, is one of the most eagerly awaited events in Spring Fest. The dancers from various colleges left the crowd asking for an encore. A day full of mind blowing choreography and unadulterated entertainment is guaranteed.
A social initiative of Spring Fest, the Blood Donation camp was very
well received by the young and old alike and was a
huge success. Apart from the regulars like dance,
music and dramatics, such an event is a major add‐on
to the social aspect of the fest.
Nukkad is a street‐play competition organised every year where teams from various colleges participate. They per‐form on various themes ranging from social aware‐ness to personal problems faced by people to create awareness among the masses.
A western band competition, the event will undergo a major overhaul in the coming edition. The event will now have two stages‐a preliminary
round which will be held in the month of December in five major cities , namely Guwahati, Kolkata, Bombay, Delhi, and Bangalore and
the second round which will be held in KGP during the fest days. Finally, three teams will be selected from
each city for the super finals which will be
judged by the Armage‐don star night performers.
Ever fantasized dancing like
Andie and Tyler from ‘Step‐up the
Streets’? A street‐dance competi‐
tion which is a blend of the hip
hop free styling, break dance,
popping, locking, B‐Boying, tutting,
waving , threading and other funky
dance styles, it will sure be a dish
well served.
If you are impetuous and spontane‐
ous, if you can act likewise in any
situation, if you believe you can say
the lines without tripping over the
furniture, then curtain call is the
place for you to be. A perfect
dramatics event in which you show
your mettle in one hour’s notice.
Panache is an event that will
redefine style like never before.
A design cum choreography
event, it is a perfect platform for
all those quick minds and fast
moving feet to showcase their
skills. Come and earn your
5 minutes of fame on stage!
Can you capture life in camera?
Can you convert what you see as
ordinary into extra‐ordinary
through the power of your photog‐
raphy skills? An improvised version
of Cell Flix, Picture Perfect is the
perfect event for all those
photographically inclined.
The National Library
Located at Belvedere Road, it is known for its rare collection of books. But the residence of the former Lieutenant Governor of Bengal has a more eerie side to it.” The footsteps of the Governor’s wife can still be heard," said Ria Gupta, who goes to study there. The posts of the night guards also keep changing. Most of them do not want to be put on the night shift. “They have seen apparitions," said Tarak, a taxi driver.
White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washing‐ton, D.C. is not only home to the current President of the United States, it also is home of several
former presidents who occasionally decide to make
their presences known there, despite the fact that they are
dead. After Lincoln's assassination in April 1865,
Mary Todd Lincoln attempted to stay in contact with her
dead husband through private
readings and séances.
Doomsday Theories
The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs that cataclysmic or
transformative events will occur on December 21, 2012 which is said to be the end‐date of a 5,125‐year‐long cycle in the Mayan Long Count cal‐ endar
The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clock face, maintained since 1947 by the board of directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of
Chicago. The closer the clock is to midnight, the closer the world is estimated to be to global disaster. As of January 14, 2010 the Doomsday Clock now stands at
six minutes to midnight.

“The Ring” will have you
cringing in your seat and
watching parts of the movie
through the slits between
your fingers placed firmly
over your eyes.Featuring a
superb cast that's firing on
all cylinders, the movie has
quite a few moments of
genuine spine‐tingling
thrills. Not since “The Sixth
Sense” has a film built up
the horror and suspense so
effectively.Directed by Gore
Verbinski , the film is a re‐
make of one of the biggest
Japanese box office hits
ever.
The Sixth Sense is a surprisingly
well‐crafted and smart little
psychological film that sucks
you in and manipulates you for
your own pleasure. Bruce Willis
plays a child psychologist
whose mission is to help a
young boy (Haley Joel Osment)
who sees dead people, and at
the same time help himself by
finding redemption for an old
unsuccessful case with a boy
with the same problems. The
first smart move of the screen‐
play is to play a certain realism.
The use of dark lights and faded
colors emphasizes this slow
path and aims at making you
focus on the psychology instead
of arty shots or special effects
“Is there someone inside
you?” “Sometimes.” ”Who
is it?” “I don't know.” “ Is it
Captain Howdy?” “I don't
know.” ”If I ask him to tell
me, will you let him an‐
swer?” “No” “Why not?”
“I'm afraid.” It has been
called 'the scariest movie of
all time'. As positive word‐
of‐mouth spread about
"The Exorcist", long lines
began to form in front of
theaters across the United
States. Despite negative
publicity generated by the
film's controversial content,
as well as statements made
by the film's more vocal op‐
ponents "The Exorcist" be‐
came the surprise hit of the
1973‐1974 winter movie‐
going season.
