Sasol, the international integrated chemicals and energy company, has participated as a key spon-

sor in the Bukur Reaction Engineering & Catalysis Symposium 2017 which was held on December 4 at HBKU in Education City. The event, organized by the Texas A&M Engineering Exper-iment Station (TEES) and hosted by Texas A&M University at Qatar and fuded jointly by Sasol and Qatar National Research Fund(QNRF), took place on December 4 & 5, brought together world leaders in GTL and catalysis and recognises the role that Qatar was playing in leading the industry forward.

The symposium has been designed to celebrate Qatar’s spon-sorship of top-notch research work in the field of GTL, Fischer Tropsch reactor design, and catalysis. The event also reflected on the career and achievements of Dr Dragomir Bukur, who in more than 40 years of research in gas processing technol-ogy and Fischer-Tropsch catalysis has revolutionised the field. Sympo-sium sponsors and attendees are committed to advance Qatar’s human capacity via training highly skilled scientists and engineers to lead the future of gas processing technology.

Sasol, as an industry leader in the commercial application of GTL catalysis around the world, acted as both a sponsor and speaker at the event, highlighting key

successes in the ORYX GTL facility, the joint venture between Qatar Petroleumand Sasol.

Speaking prior to the event,Thabiet Booley, Senior Vice President Energyat Sasol said: “GTL catalysis has transformed the out-look for Qatar and provided the world with a reliable and afforda-ble energy source. This conference not only celebrates the successes that have been achieved, but con-tinues to advance the research and potential for future growth.”

Dr Cesar O. Malave, dean of Texas A&M at Qatar, said, “Texas A&M at Qatar is proud to host the symposium which was a joint spon-sorship between Sasol and Qatar National Research Fund. Alongside our longtime partner, Sasol, we aim to provide a medium to discuss knowledge that has direct bearing

on the pillars of Qatar’s energy and industry sector. Through collabo-rative efforts with TEES, Texas A&M at Qatar utilizes it world-class Doha-based laboratory facilities and expertise to export knowledge created here to the US and beyond. That this symposium honors the work of Dr Bukur is fitting, as he has made pioneering, state-of-the-art contributions to the field and contributed to the faculty and stu-dents of Texas A&M at Qatar.”

Symposium Chair and Director of the TEES Gas & Fuels Research Center at Texas A&M at Qatar, Dr Nimir Elbashir, said, “Qatar is lead-ing the world in natural gas monetisation. We are partnering with Sasol and ORYX GTL, as well as Qatar National Research Fund in this event that co-organised with Qatar Environment and Energy

Research Institution and Qatar Uni-versity Gas Processing Center, to highlight Qatar’s leadership role in this field.

The symposium is named after Professor Dragomir Bukur, a dis-tinguished scholar who has contributed significantly to advance research work in gas processing technology and to support Qatar in this area.”

Dr Abdul Sattar Al Taie, Execu-tive Director of Qatar National Research Fund, a sponsor of the event, said “We recognise the sig-nificance of the new technologies showcased at this event, many of which are home-grown and designed to reinforce Qatar’s posi-tion within this field and are pleased to be able to support it under our Conference and Workshop Spon-sorship Programme”.

The Georgetown University in Qatar campus was transformed with colourful art, food stalls, and pink ribbons aplenty as part of the annual student-run breast cancer awareness fair. Organised by

the Women’s Society and Development Club, the community-focused event aimed to share knowledge about the disease and its detection and raise funds for Qatar Cancer Society.

A number of local businesses contributed their time and sold their products and services—ranging from gourmet desserts to beauty treat-ments—with all proceeds going towards the cause.

This year, the club used the fair to highlight the importance of check-ing regularly for signs of the disease and how to identify common symptoms. There was also a mobile clinic supplied by the Qatar National Cancer Program, to encourage event attendees to screen for breast as well as bowel cancer. “There’s a very high chance of getting cured from breast cancer if you get early screening, so we wanted to spread aware-ness,” explained Maha Al Abdulla (SFS ’19), president of the Women’s Society and Development Club. “So this year, we collaborated with the primary healthcare center to get the mobile screening truck.”

This is the seventh year that the Women’s Society has hosted the fair. The club, which was established in 2010, seeks to explore and enhance understanding of gender-related issues through dialogue, education, and awareness. The funds gathered at the event will be used to raise awareness among the public in Qatar about how to screen for the dis-ease, as well as pay for treatment for those who cannot afford it.

Adding a bright and cosy throw on your sofa or light-ing candles can add warmth

to your home, suggest interior design experts.

Adetee Sawhaney, Principal Designer, Altus Interio, and Ashish Gupta, Director, Inliving, have shared tips:

Bright and cosy throws: Winter is the finest time to pamper your-self with spongy, cozy and comfy textiles and textures. Throw in some nice cushions and throws on your sofas and chaises made of wool, faux fur or even velvet. It will give a warm feeling.

Use soft and fluffy fabrics.Plush rugs for the floor: Do not

walk on the cold floor. Add a few rugs and carpets that not only keep your feet warm, but also bring in colour and character. Choose those carpets only that fit the style and shade scheme of your home.

Warm colours for the walls: Painting is another way to beat win-ter blues. Most of us cannot make

major changes to furnishings ahead of every season, and hence a sim-ple paint job does the trick. You can a l s o a d d d i f f e r e n t

coloured cushions and pillows for your bedroom and living room to add more character.

Bring in lots of candles: Add

natural accents and lots of candles to light up the place. Candles play an important role in bringing warm and comfortable feel to the space.

Feeling drained out emo-tionally? Engage in Zumba dancing for five weeks as

it may not only help you stay physically fit but also improve mental health and quality of life, a study has shown.

Zumba is an exercise fitness programme which involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic music.

The choreography incorpo-rates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included.

In the study, published in the

Health Education Journal, peo-ple with sedentary lifestyle participated in the five-week exercise programme based on the Zumba Fitness discipline.

Zumba helped them improve their quality of life, especially the emotional aspect, which was recorded as the least in these par-ticipants. Quality of life is a broad concept comprising various aspects and is divided into eight dimensions: social, emotional, physical state, physical pain, physical functioning, vitality, mental health and general health.

Ace fashion designer Steve Mad-d e n (pictured ) h a s contemplated quitting the fash-

ion industry “more now” than ever before, although he is proud of the

“wonderful company” he has created.Madden, 59, who founded his

eponymous label in 1990, says he goes through phases when he thinks there is “nothing” more he can do to improve his label and he should give up his career, but other days he feels “incred-ible” and “valuable”, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Speaking to Marie Claire Online, Madden said: “More now, actu-ally. I suppose there were moments then, but really, now. The pupils are better than the teacher. And as the teacher and the builder, I have to figure out another way that I can add value to my company”.

“So, now, because I’m an entrepreneur, maybe there’s nothing I can do anymore. Maybe I should just quit - I have thought that. But then I have incredible days where I feel valuable,” he added. When Madden is building his team he looks for passionate colleagues with a hard “work ethic”. “It’s passion, work ethic, and knowing what’s important - and the work ethic is the third of those three.”

HEALTH THURSDAY 7 DECEMBER 201708The Washington Post

Every year around holiday time, there’s an influx of articles about how to stick to your healthy eating goals and resist temptation.

You may read about how to say no to second helpings, stop gobbling up fat-laden appetisers or alternate fizzy drinks with sparkling water to combat calories.

That advice is practical, but it focuses too much on what not to do. It could end up mak-ing you feel guilty if you break the rules and decide to - gasp - indulge and enjoy yourself. So, this year, let’s try something new. Instead of stress, pressure and guilt associated with fam-ily dinners and holiday get-togethers, let’s create a new narrative that will empower you to feel good about yourself and your food choices. Share these ideas to spread holiday cheer and remove diet stigma for you and your loved ones.

Here are nine things to tell yourself this year so you can enjoy family, friends and food.

1. I deserve to enjoy holiday meals with-out guilt. Yep, it’s just food. You deserve to take pleasure in it. Food is part of traditions and mem-ories, so sample your favorite cookies or mashed potatoes and take time to really enjoy every bite of a reasonable portion. Focus on how your food smells, looks and tastes without distractions. This is called mindful eating, and it’s about fully enjoy-ing what you eat without regret or shame.

2. What I eat every day matters most. Worry less about what you eat over the holidays and concentrate on what you eat year-round instead. If you have a healthy diet in general, a couple of days of celebratory food won’t be det-rimental. If you don’t usually eat well, make that a goal in the new year. Remember: The holiday season is short-lived. In life, there will always be times when you can’t make your usual healthy choices - and that’s okay. Enjoy these special moments focusing on friends and family.

3. I have the power to control my por-tions. Only you can decide how much food to eat, and that decision should be based on listen-ing to your body. Slow down and notice how your stomach feels before you start eating. If you’re still hungry, have another bite. But when you’re almost full, stop eating.

4. I have the right to eat seconds or to say “no thank you” when I’m full. Remember that you don’t need to make someone else happy by overeating or by denying your hunger. It’s the norm to eat more when a host graciously offers more, but it doesn’t need to be. Have faith in your ability to make good choices, and trust your own appetite.

5. It’s normal if I overindulge during the holidays. It’s human! Accept that you did and move on. Try not to become trapped in punish-ing self-talk or restrictive dieting behaviors. When you eat mindfully and enjoy every bite, it often takes less food to satisfy cravings. So enjoy

some of your favorite foods with fervor, but respect your body when it tells you you’re done.

6. I will eat when I’m hungry, not when I’m feeling emotional. Many of us eat when we’re lonely, bored, sad or stressed, and those emo-tions can run wild at holiday time. Even the stress of being with certain family members can trig-ger people to overeat. There are more effective remedies for dealing with these feelings besides

food. The answer is different for everyone, but calling a friend, exercising or practicing medi-tation can work for some people. Take time to learn what works best for you.

7. I don’t need to “healthify” my beloved and traditional holiday recipe. Enjoy your favorites as they should be - it’s just once a year! Really - no one wants sugarless sugar cookies or eggnog made from almond milk and flaxseeds.

8. I promise not to comment on the size, shape or weight of my friends and relatives. Their weight is their business, not yours. The same is true for you - no one has the right to judge you or comment on your weight either. And if you are met with a rude comment about your appear-ance, it’s fine to tell someone why it’s not okay to talk about your weight.

9. I will enjoy quality time with people I love. A very long-term (75-plus years) study at Harvard has been examining what makes peo-ple happy over the course of their lives. And guess what? It’s not a number on a scale or how many cookies they eat. Close relationships are the key to long-term health and happiness. So this year, mark the holidays by spending time with peo-ple you love, and try not to fret too much about what you will have for dinner. Embrace the joy of festive meals without feelings of stress and guilt, which should never be part of healthy eating.

Keep your holidays happy by letting go of food guilt

FOOD THURSDAY 7 DECEMBER 201710

Charlotte Druckman The Washington Post

This is more sweet-and-sour than sweet, and it’s not a dessert, but it’s not entirely

savoury, either; in short, it’s a complete surprise, and an unfor-gettable one. 10 servings as an appetizer, brunch dish or side; makes 2 strudels

Make it part of a brunch spread, thinking of it as you might a kugel or blintz dish. You could also serve it as an appetiser. Best of all, add it to your holiday repertoire and bring out as a side dish for the holidays.

When you’re working with the phyllo dough, it’s best to keep it under damp paper towels.

Serve with sour cream.

Ingredients1/2 cup raisins4 tablespoons (1/2 stick)

unsalted butter, plus 8 tablespoons (1 stick), melted

1/4 cup sugar3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

(from 1 lemon)1 tart apple, peeled and grated

(can hold it in water to avoid discoloring)

5 cups shredded green cabbage (from 1/2 head)

1/4 teaspoon salt, plus more as needed

1/2 cup sour cream, plus more for serving

10 sheets phyllo dough (about 7 ounces; defrosted if frozen)

1/4 cup finely crushed dried bread or cracker crumbs

StepsPreheat the oven to 350

degrees. Use cooking oil spray to grease a baking sheet.

Place the raisins in a small bowl and cover with hot water; let sit for 10 minutes, then drain.

Melt the 4 tablespoons of

butter in a large saute pan over medium heat. Stir in the sugar and lemon juice; cook for 2 min-utes until the sugar has dissolved.

Stir in the apple, cabbage and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, then uncover and increase the heat to medium-high; cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring, so much of the excess moisture evaporates.

Let cool slightly. Taste and sea-son with more salt, as needed. Stir in the raisins and sour cream, then taste again for salt.

Place 1 sheet of the phyllo dough on a clean, damp kitchen towel. Brush with some of the melted butter, then sprinkle lightly with some of the crumbs. Repeat this layering 4 more times.

Spread half the cabbage mix-ture across a narrow end of the dough, leaving a 1 1/2-inch border on both sides and a 4-inch border on the top. First, fold in the side

borders, then fold down the 4-inch border.

Use the edge of the kitchen towel to help guide/roll the filled phyllo into a log/strudel. Transfer it to the baking sheet, seam side down.

Repeat with the remaining butter, phyllo, crumbs and cab-bage filling, to roll and create the second strudel. Transfer to the baking sheet, alongside the first strudel. Brush the tops of both strudel with any remaining melted butter.

Bake (middle rack) for about 40 minutes, or until the strudels are crisped and golden brown. Let cool for at least 5 minutes before cutting.

An old New Wave rock band that’s never released a No. 1 song in the US is selling more concert tick-ets than the biggest pop stars in the world.

Depeche Mode, the British synth-pop group formed in 1980, is having one of the most remarkable tours in modern music and its most-successful concert run ever. The band sold 1.27 million tickets through the first nine months of 2017, more than Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber or Bruno Mars—much younger pop acts at the peak of their fame.

In October, the band became the first act to sell out four consecutive shows at the Hollywood Bowl, an open-air theater in the hills of Los Angeles that’s hosted everyone from the Beatles to Luciano Pavarotti. Now Depeche Mode is back on the road for its second tour through Europe this year and will head to Latin America in 2018. Not bad for a group whose album sales peaked more than 20 years

ago. “Every time we go out and tour, we’re playing to more people,” said Martin Gore, 56, the band’s guitarist and lead songwriter. “It’s just incredible at this stage in our career.”

Depeche Mode’s success speaks to the enduring power of old rock groups, which accounted for a big chunk of the $7.3bn North American concert industry last year. The best-selling festival of 2016 was Desert Trip, a bacchanal in California’s Coachella Valley featuring acts that came to prominence half a century ago. According to researcher Pollstar, the top tours of 2017 are Guns N’ Roses and U2, which released their best-selling albums 30 years ago.

Yet Depeche Mode’s late-career surge is also a trib-ute to a band that has carefully nurtured and expanded a loyal army of fans known as the Black Swarm (or Dev-otees) who follow it all over the world. The mania for the group’s dance pop is strongest in Germany, where the last seven albums have topped the charts, but it reaches every corner of the globe.

“Dead Man Walking,” Tim Rob-bins (pictured) owes many of his career highlights to the prison system. But the 59-year-old Hol-lywood star’s interest in criminal justice and the incarcerated extends far beyond his efforts to win critical approval or awards.

Over a decade, Robbins has made a dramatic dent in reof-fending rates among Californian prisoners taking part in a drama programme that encourages hardened criminals to put on make-up and get in touch with their emotions. “We’re not in there to make theater with them, we’re not there to do plays with

them, and we’re certainly not there to turn them into actors,” he says at a presentation on The Prison Project in downtown Los Angeles.

The Prison Project brings together rival gang members, convicted murderers and white supremacists in workshops where it is not taboo to express emotions, as it is elsewhere in prison. Groups of inmates sit in white make-up and masks, improvising scenes as stock char-acters from the 16th Century Italian Commedia dell’Arte move-ment that represent happiness, sadness, fear or anger.

Researchers have found that a little known exoplanet orbiting a red dwarf star

located about 111 light years away in the constellation Leo could have a rocky surface and a small gase-ous atmosphere—like Earth.

The exoplanet, called K2-18b, which orbits the star K2-18, could well be a scaled-up version of Earth, according to the study to be published in the journal Astron-omy and Astrophysics.

While looking at the planet’s data, the same researchers also discovered for the first time that the planet has a neighbour.

When the planet K2-18b was first discovered in 2015, it was found to be orbiting within the star’s habitable zone, making it an ideal candidate to have liquid sur-face water, a key element in harbouring conditions for life as we know it.

The data set used by the

researchers came from the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) using the Euro-pean Southern Observatory’s 3.6m telescope at La Silla Observatory, in Chile.

In order to figure out whether K2-18b was a scaled-up version of Earth (mostly rock), or a scaled-down version of Neptune (mostly gas), researchers had to first fig-ure out the planet’s mass, using radial velocity measurements taken with HARPS.

“If you can get the mass and radius, you can measure the bulk density of the planet and that can tell you what the bulk of the planet is made of,” Cloutier said.

After using a machine-learn-ing approach to figure out the mass measurement, the researchers were able to determine the planet is either a mostly rocky planet with a small gaseous atmosphere—like Earth, but bigger—or a mostly

water planet with a thick layer of ice on top of it.

“With the current data, we can’t distinguish between those two possibilities,” Cloutier said.

The JWST, which will be launched in 2019, could be instru-mental in collecting a range of data for studying the solar system, early universe and exoplanets.

I t was while looking through the data of K2-18b that Cloutier noticed some-thing unusual.

In addition to a signal o c c u r r i n g every 39 days from the rota-tion of K2-18, and one taking place every 33

days from the orbit of K2-18b, he noticed a different signal occur-ring every nine days.

While the newly described planet K2-18c is closer to its star, and probably too hot to be in the habitable zone, like K2-18b it also appears to be a Super-Earth mean-ing it has a mass similar to Earth.

A large Moon-sized planetary body penetrated all the way down to the Earth’s core during the early days of our home planet’s formation, delivering in

the process precious metals such as gold and platinum, suggests a new study.

The team determined the total amount of material delivered to Earth may have been two to five times greater than previously thought, and the impacts altered Earth in a profound way while depositing familiar elements like gold. “These results have far-reaching implications for Moon-forming theories and beyond,” said Simone Marchi of Southwest Research Institute in the US.

Planetary collisions are at the core of our solar sys-tem’s formation. Scientists have long believed that after

the Moon’s formation, the early Earth experienced a long period of bombard-ment that diminished about 3.8 billion years ago. During this period, called “late accretion,” collisions with Moon-sized planetary bodies, known as planetesi-mals, embedded extensive amounts of metal and rock-forming minerals into the Earth’s mantle and crust.

It is estimated that approximately 0.5 per cent of Earth’s present mass was delivered during this stage of planetary evolution.

The new study confirms how mas-sive collisions delivered metal to early

Earth. With the support of Nasa, researchers at the South-

west Research Institute and University of Maryland created high-resolution impact simulations that showed signifi-cant portions of a large planetesimal’s core could penetrate all the way down to merge with Earth’s core—or bounced back into space and escape the planet entirely.

The study published in the journal Nature Geoscience found evidence of more massive accretion onto the Earth than previously thought after the Moon’s formation. The mantle abundances of certain trace elements such as plat-inum, iridium and gold, which tend to bond chemically with metallic iron, are much higher than what would be expected to result from core formation. This discrepancy can most easily be explained by late accretion after core formation was complete, the study said.

The research ship “Xiangy-anghong 10” departed on China’s 49th ocean expe-

dition yesterday, with scientists onboard set to explore polyme-tallic sulphide deposits in the southwest and northwest Indian Ocean.

Scientists plan to conduct research including surveying polymetallic sulphide deposits, sampling biological gene resources, air-sea flux obser-vations and studying ocean structures. “A major feature of this voyage is that we will step up environmental monitoring in our scientific expedition and place more attention on the health of the ocean,” said Tao. Advanced deep-sea explora-tion equipment such as the unmanned submersible Qian-long 2 will be used.

Taking smartphone storage solution to an entirely new level, Samsung Electronics

yesterday announced that it has begun mass production of the first 512GB memory chip for next-gen-eration mobile devices.

Utilising Samsung’s latest 64-layer, 512-GB V-NAND chips, the new 512GB Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) memory chip pro-vides unparalleled storage capacity and outstanding performance for upcoming flagship smartphones and tablets, the company said in a statement.

“The new Samsung 512GB eUFS provides the best embedded stor-age solution for next-generation premium smartphones by over-coming potential limitations in system performance that can occur with the use of micro-SD cards,” said Jaesoo Han, Executive Vice President of Memory Sales and Market ing at Samsung Electronics.

“By assuring an early, stable supply of this advanced embedded storage, Samsung is taking a big

step forward in contributing to timely launches of next-generation mobile devices by mobile manu-facturers around the world,” Jaesoo added.

The increased storage capacity will provide a much more exten-sive mobile experience.

“For example, the new high-capacity storage enables a flagship smartphone to store approximately 130 4K Ultra HD video clips of a 10-minute duration—which is about a tenfold increase over a 64GB chip which allows storing

only about 13 of the same-sized video clips,” Samsung said.

The Samsung 512GB chip also features strong read and write per-formance. With this, mobile users can enjoy seamless multimedia experiences such as high-resolu-tion burst shooting, as well as file searching and video downloading in dual-app viewing mode.

Samsung also announced to steadily increase an aggressive pro-duction volume for its 64-layer 512GB chips in addition to expand-ing its 256GB chips production.

Joining the chorus against a messaging app exclusively for kids from Facebook, Brit-

ish Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt (pictured) has warned the social media giant to stay away from his children.

“Facebook told me they would come back with ideas to PREVENT underage use of their product, but instead they are actively targeting younger chil-dren. “Stay away from my kids please Facebook and act responsibly!” Hunt posted on Twitter yesterday.

Facebook on Monday introduced Messenger Kids for under-13 children to video chat and message with family and friends when they can’t be together in person. Rolled out in the US for the moment, Mes-senger Kids is a stand-alone app that will be available on kids’ tablets or smartphones but can be controlled from a parent’s Facebook account.

“Not sure this is the right direction at all,” Hunt tweeted.

Facebook was yet to com-ment. Facebook’s move has already been criticised in some countries. Facebook, however, said it launched Messenger Kids after talking to thousands of parents, associations like National PTA and parenting experts.

Google has announced blocking YouTube on Amazon’s Fire TV and its Echo Show amid growing rivalry between the two tech giants

as their businesses continue to overlap.“We’ve been trying to reach agreement with Ama-

zon to give consumers access to each other’s products and services. But Amazon doesn’t carry Google prod-ucts like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn’t make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest’s latest prod-ucts,” The Verge quoted a YouTube spokesperson as

saying late on Tuesday. “Given this lack of reciproc-ity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and FireTV. We hope we can reach an agree-ment to resolve these issues soon,” the spokesperson added. Meanwhile, Amazon responded, pointing towards the unfair nature of Google effectively block-ing access to the YouTube web site based on the type of device being used to access it, Engadget reported.

“Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open web-site. We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible,” Amazon was quoted as saying.

The tech titans have been battling around the implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show since last past few months.

Earlier in September, YouTube was blocked over Google’s concerns about how the app looked on Ama-zon’s device. It reinstated at the end of November.

Amazon Echo Show is a smart speaker that is part of the Amazon Echo line of products. It is designed around the company’s virtual assistant Alexa but additionally features a 7-inch touch screen display.

Amazon Fire TV is digital media player and its microconsole remote developed by Amazon.
