DAILY HOURS: Mon.-Thurs. 10am-Midnight; Fri & Sat. 10am-1am ~ Friends always welcomed

The 12th annual Ice Fishing Challenge,

sponsored by the Alexandria Sertoma

Club and Viking Sportsmen, is set to take

place Saturday, February 11, from noon to 3 p.m. on

Lake L’Homme Dieu near Alexandria.

In the past 12 years, the number of participants inthe Ice Fishing Challenge has increased dramatical-ly. The event is now Minnesota’s second largest icefishing tournament. More than 2,200 anglers took tothe ice of Lake Agnes to compete in last year’s tour-nament.

This year, the tournament will be moved back toLake L’Homme Dieu near the Krueger’s Creekaccess, where it has been held every year except lastyear. Participants will park just off of Highway 29(watch for signs) and buses will shuttle them to thetournament site.

New this year, is a youth fishing expo hosted byprofessional fisherman Mike Frischt. The expo willlast from 9 to 11 a.m. and everyone younger than age16 will get a prize. Anglers must bring their own pole.

This year’s tournament will also include some ven-dors at the site.

Because some prize money is being rolled overfrom last year, this year’s tournament will have thebiggest cash payout in the tournament’s history, with$57,900 in fishing prizes and $9,800 in raffle prizes.

Anglers who catch the top 100 fish in the contestwill receive a cash prize. Prizes include $20,000 forfirst place, $5,000 for second place and $2,500 for thirdplace. Fourth through 100th-place anglers willreceive cash prizes ranging from $1,000 to $200.

One of the best things about the contest is that youdon’t need to have a large fish to be a winner; manyof the winners in previous years had fish that

weighed less than one pound. In fact, the way theprize system works, even the participant in 100thplace can walk away with $1,000.

You don’t even have to fish to be a winner becausethere is also a raffle drawing set for that day with atotal cash payout of $9,800. Raffle prizes include$5,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500for third place. Winners from 4th through 20th placewill receive anywhere from $100 to $500.

Raffle tickets, which are $5 each, can be purchasedfrom any Sertoma member in the area, and can alsobe purchased at the Ice FishingChallenge.

Tickets for the Ice FishingChallenge are $35 each andcan be purchased at Elden’sFood Fair andChristopherson Bait inAlexandria, Koep’s Corner inGlenwood, and the HolidaySuper Stop in Sauk Centre. Topurchase tickets online, or formore information, visitwww.icefishingchallenge.org.

Proceeds from the event goto local charities.

Ice Fishing Challenge offersnearly $68,000 in cash prizes

Minnesota has more than 20,000 miles of

snowmobile trails that criss-cross its

forests, prairies, hills and lakes. These trails, which are often maintained through a

partnership between local clubs, trail users and thestate, make Minnesota a popular snowmobiling des-tination.

Here in Douglas County, it’s just as wonderful forsnowmobilers. There are breathtaking scenes on 368miles of Douglas Area Trails Association (DATA)snowmobile trails. These trails wind throughout thecounty, connecting every community in the area andproviding connections to trails in surrounding coun-ties as well.

The DATA trails also include part of the CentralLakes Trail, the abandoned Burlington-Northernrailway that has been transformed into a paved four-season recreational trail. The 55-mile Central LakesTrail connects the communities of Evansville,Brandon, Garfield, Alexandria, Nelson and Osakis.

The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the LakeWobegon Trail, which extends from Osakis to St.Joseph near St. Cloud. Together, the two trail sys-tems are about 120 miles long and extend fromFergus Falls to St. Joseph.

Studs are not allowed on either the CentralLakes Trail or the Lake Wobegon Trail.

Douglas Area TrailsAssociation

Years ago, there were few places in Douglas County to snowmobilesafely. Lakes and ditches were about the only option available untilDATA was formed in 1974.

The association built the first trail that year (15 miles) with helpfrom private landowners, business people and residents, and by 1975it had a total of 80 miles. The system grew by leaps and bounds, expanding to 270 miles by 1978.

The organization was started by a small group ofsnowmobile enthusiasts who wantedto promote safe snowmobiling inDouglas County.

More than 500 landowners havegiven permission for trails to cross theirproperty. Without their cooperation, there wouldn’t be a trail system.

For more information visit the DATAwebsite at www.douglasareatrails.com.A free trail map and additional trail infor-mation is available at the AlexandriaLakes Area Chamber of Commerce at 206Broadway. See the DATA trail map onPages 16-17.

Douglas County, located just two hours north-

west of the Twin Cities, has a lot to offer

with its plentiful lakes and abounding

recreational opportunities. The county got its start in 1858, the same year

Minnesota became a state. The area was a wildernessof woods, prairies and lakes, and was home to Siouxand Chippewa Indian tribes. The Red River Trail, usedby early pioneers and wagon trains, passed throughthe county northwest to Fort Abercrombie in DakotaTerritory. That summer, brothers Alexander andWilliam Kinkead established a settlement along theshore of Lake Agnes, built a log cabin and hotel, andnamed the area “Alexandria.”

A mail route was set up between St. Cloud and FortAbercrombie, and soon afterward a road was cut fromFort Snelling to Abercrombie, which allowed for astage line, and increasing numbers of new settlers.

In 1862, news arrived that Indians were massing andwar parties were forming. Many settlers headed eastto safety, while others combined forces to defend theirproperty. The uprising proved too powerful, however, and the county’s settlements were abandoned.

Later, settlers began trickling back into the countyand soldiers arrived to build a stockade in Alexandria.Treaties were later signed with the Sioux, and by 1866things had calmed to the point where the soldiers lefttown. That same year, Douglas County’s boundarieswere officially set. A government land office was even-

tually set up in Alexandria and a surge of Europeanimmigrants and Civil War veterans moved here.Within seven years almost all the county’s tillable landwas claimed.

In 1878, the railroad was connected from Melrose toAlexandria, and by the next year to Brandon andEvansville. The rail allowed tourists and sportsmenfrom the east to get to the county easily, and the wealthof fish and game soon made the area a popular vaca-tion spot.

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

There’s more to downtown Alexandria than

storefronts. There’s history, a sense of pride

and merchants who are dedicated to making

visits so memorable you’ll want to come back.

Formed in 1967, the Alexandria DowntownMerchants Association (DMA) strives toenhance, beautify, and promote the diversity ofthe city’s thriving downtown shopping andbusiness district while protecting and preserv-ing its historical past.

Rich in history since the late 1800s, down-town Alexandria encompasses 3rd through 8thAvenues on Broadway and is a popular shop-ping destination for antiques, unique bou-tiques, gift shops, eateries, museums and the-ater.

In addition, DMA organizes projects andevents that take place downtown, and takescare of beautification projects, such as the pur-chase and maintenance of the colorful flowerbaskets that hang along the streets in the sum-mertime and the “Historic DowntownAlexandria” banners that were put up a coupleof years ago. With the DMA’s support, garbagereceptacles and more benches were added tothe downtown to accommodate shoppers.

For more information about DMA, includingupcoming downtown events, visit its website:www.downtownalexandria.com. The group isalso on Facebook.
