Agendas

We want to remind all parents to PLEASE

CHECK YOUR CHILD’S AGENDA EVERY

NIGHT. We send the agendas home

every day. It is a tool that we use to

communicate with parents about what

is going on at school. We appreciate

your involvement in this way. If you are

unsure of what homework your child

has, please refer to the classroom web-

site found at

Mathletics

Khalsa School is happy to introduce an online

learning tool called Mathletics. Mathletics is an en-

gaging learning space which empowers students

with all the tools they need to be successful learn-

ers, both in the classroom and at home. It is a dy-

namic program which enables students to learn as

well as practice their skills. It is equipped with the

option to print a workbook for extra practice at

home after completing the assigned work. It is a

very useful tool for teachers as they are able to

monitor the work done by each student and as a

class to better tackle the areas that need to be

revisited. At our school, it is especially useful for stu-

dents travelling to India for longer periods of time

as the students have their own unique usernames

and passwords. We hope you enjoy the benefits of

this amazing program and help us utilize it to its

maximum potential.

It’s hard to believe that April is upon us and that we are moving into the last few months of Kindergarten. In literacy, we are continuing to work on our letter booklets, learning blends and new sight words. Kindergarten students have be-gun reading short sentences in their letter booklets. In Math, the focus has been on some extensive patterns, shapes and sorting based on a single attribute. We will also continue working on color words and number words up to 10. Working with numbers 11-20 and measuring using non-standard units will also be a focus in April. In science, we learned about dinosaurs and dental care. In social studies, students learned about how to be good citizens of the world. Students will learn about Habit 6: Synergize. Kindergarten students will work on getting along in small groups and finding ways they can help each other when completing group tasks. Ms. Kaur and Ms. Chidley are encouraging students to continue to read for 20 minutes daily.

For Literacy, we have finished our third genre of “Narrative Writing.” The grade 2 stu-dents have finished writing their Narrative stories as their final project for this unit. We have now moved on to our next unit, which is “Procedural Writing.” For this genre stu-dents will learn to tell the reader how to do something, e.g. play a game, bake a cake or carry out a scientific experi-ment. For Math, we have completed the linear measurement unit. In this unit students used direct or indirect meas-urement to solve problems. We are now working on our new Math unit, which is “Data Relationships.” In this unit students will learn to collect, display and analyze data to solve problems. Currently, for science, we are working on the “Exploring Liquids” unit. Exploring liquids consists of describing properties of water and other liquids and recog-nizing the importance of water to living and nonliving things. As well as, describing interaction of water with different materials and applying that knowledge to practical problems. For Social Studies, we have continued learning about Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit. We have expanded on a various traditions and celebrations that are significant in each community. This month, students will demonstrate an in depth understanding of different festivals and how traditions can be shared.

It’s already March, spring is almost upon us, and we have lots of exciting things coming up this month! Here’s what’s happening in first grade. In Language Arts, we are continuing to increase our reading and comprehension skills through our reading sheets and guided reading. We are practicing every day to select appro-priate strategies in the areas of comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary as we practice read-ing to ourselves, reading to someone, listening to reading, working on words, and working on writing. We have continued to learn about the parts that make up a good story, including characters, setting, events, a problem, and a solution. We have been working on putting stories in sequencing order and retelling them in class. Students are encouraged to continue reading at home every day. In math, we are continuing to develop our number sense and operation skills as we practice adding and subtracting numbers. Students are working very hard to read problem solving stories and have started to create their own addition and subtraction stories. We will be starting our measure-ments unit by teaching students about length, height, and width. In order to help at home, you can play math games with your child and encourage your child to add and subtract everyday things around the home. In Science, we will begin looking at the season Spring. Students will be exploring how changes in the environment occur in a regular pattern, including changes in weather, animals, plants, sunlight, and temperature, and how these things affect our lives. In Social, we have continued exploring more about communities. We have started by looking at different types of maps, examining the parts and the information that we can find on maps, and trying to make our own maps. Students will continue to learn about Landmarks in their community. We will also be learning about Traditions. The Grade 1’s have come a long way. It’s amazing to see their growth since August. Mrs. Kaur and Ms. Raeewal are very proud of our sweet and smart first graders. Grade 1 Team: Ms. Raeewal and Mrs. Kaur

In Literacy, we will be starting on Procedural Texts. Procedural texts tell the reader how to do some-

thing, for example, how to make cookies, feed a pet, or play a game. Procedural texts can be simple or very com-

plex. We will continue to work on our writing skills by focusing on sentence structure, adding lots of details and

punctuation.

In math, we will continue with our measurement unit. In the measurement unit students will use non-standard and

standard units to measure length, width, and height in centimeters and in meters. Students will also learn how to

measure perimeter in centimeters and in meters and measure the mass of an object in grams and in kilograms.

In social studies, we will be learning about India. Students will be looking at similarities and differences among peo-

ple and communities and examine the social, cultural and linguistic characteristics that affect quality of life in com-

munities in India. We hope to experience the tastes and sounds of India on our travels, as well as explore its many

different landscapes.

In science, we have wrapped up our Testing Material and Design unit. Students will use what they have learnt and

apply it to the next unit, which is Building with a Variety of Materials. During this unit students will be building

different structures to test out stability and describe the properties of several materials, such as, paper, glass, plas-

tic and metal. Students are asked to collect and bring in material from home to create their projects at school.
