From The Principal . . .

Dear Parents and Friends of Henry Ford II:

As we begin final preparation for the 2017-2018 school year to end,

please take the time to reflect with your student. Did he/she give

100% effort? Did he/she accomplish everything they wanted to?

Is he/she putting themselves in position to attend the college or uni-

versity of his/her choice? It is my hope that all students are putting

themselves in position to keep as many doors and options open for

them in the future. As the school year ends, let’s remain focused

on the marathon of this academic year and finish strong!

Let me be the first to congratulate our 2018 Valedictorians

Please mark May 15, 2018 as our Senior Honors Night,

scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the PAC. I am always amazed at

the success of our seniors. Senior Honors Night validates for

me that hard work in high school pays off for our students.

Our juniors are starting to see the results from the SAT/M-

Step test they took in April. I am encouraged by the early

results that students have shared. It looks like we are on

track to meet our learning goals for the year. The students I

visited with continue to tell me they felt they did well on the

test because they had challenged themselves with an AP

class. If your student is not considering taking an AP class

for next year, please consider having them take one as part of

their educational plan. If you would like to make a schedule

change please see your counselor today. Taking an AP class

will prepare students to meet the challenges of the SAT test,

and earn a score that denotes they are college ready and cata-

pult them into the college of their dreams.

For those of you who post calendar dates on the refrigerator

like we do at our home, here are key dates for the remainder

of the year:

FINANCIAL AID IN A NUTSHELL Financial aid makes up the difference between what college costs and what a family can afford to pay. Approximately two-thirds of full-time undergraduate college students receive some sort of financial assistance. ***********************************************

TIMELINE October – January attend Financial Aid Information Night and beginning applying. Students can begin filing the FAFSA, which is required by most colleges. February: Many colleges have priority deadlines this month — urge students to apply by the priority deadline. Late February and March: Colleges may call you to ask questions about your students who have special circumstances. End of March: Admission and financial aid notifications are mailed. April: Students weigh offers of admission and compare aid awards. May 1: Students must tell all colleges whether they are attending or not and make deposits.

FINANCIAL AID WEBSITES These useful sites are all administered by the U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Aid A good starting place for students planning for college and looking for financial aid. DO YOU PLAN

TO PLAY SPORTS IN COLLEGE? Become familiar with the NCAA Eligibility Center

NCAA Eligibility Center (formerly known as the Clearinghouse) is established to verify academic eligibility. Student athletes must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center if they want to participate in college athletics at the NCAA Division I or II levels. It is essential though that all prospective athletes understand the process in order to be deemed eligible to participate. Registration with the NCAA is required for those wishing to play at the Division I and II level.

What does being eligible mean? Upon graduation, an athlete that has completed the required core courses, obtained the minimum grade point average, and achieved the necessary standardized tests scores will be declared eligible. Thereby, he/she will be permitted to participate in DI and DII athletics beginning in his freshman year. Athletes who wish to play at the Division III level are not required to register but must be sure to meet the eligibility requirements set by the specific institution and its athletic conference.

If you have further questions please see your coach, Mr. Szlaga (Athletic Director) Mr. Joseph (Counselor)

Some things to remember in regards to some of the issues we have had with UC are:

The most significant issue is that if you use a computer that has already accessed UC,

it sometimes will open a cached version of the page and you won’t be able to access

the appropriate page to initiate the set up process.

Finals week can be the most stressful time for a student in high school. Ensure your

student is prepared for exams and share these study tips, which can help conquer

his/her finals. Follow this list as finals week approaches (the earlier you prep, the

better) so you can ace your exams from start to finish:

1. Create your own study guide. 2. Ask questions. 3. Attend the review session. 4. Start early. 5. Organize a group study session. 6. Study things not on the study guide. 7. Take breaks. 8.
