Schenkel Shultz achieved the 3 Green Globes certification presented by The Green Building Initiative on the $21.7 million Valencia College Lake Nona Campus. Opened in August 2012 as the satellite campus’s first building, the 88,821-sf project includes a state-of-the-art academic building and central energy plant that incorporated sustainable design standards.
Featuring the latest technologies, including Global Plasma Solutions’ patented needlepoint bipolar ionization, the three-story, academic facility includes academic spaces, teaching laboratories, student services, a book store, library, café, a Dean’s suite and administrative offices.

Global Plasma Solutions’ System Design Advantages:
• No dedicated outdoor air units or split path AHU's typically required to dehumidify large volumes of outdoor. Standard single coil, single path VAV air handling units were used which easily handled the 10-15% of outside air.
• No relief air systems were required to handle building pressurization issues associated with large volumes of outside air.
• No demand control ventilation (DCV) control scheme was required since the minimum amount of outdoor air required to properly pressurize the building was utilized; therefore, any DCV controls would have no where to go without drawing the building negative.
• No CO2 sensors were required since CO2 is no longer an indicator of indoor air quality using the ASHRAE 62 IAQP and applying GPS’ NBPI air purification systems.

System Overview
Jason Smith, P.E., Principal with OCI Associates, a MEP firm headquartered in Orlando, FL, utilized the ASHRAE 62 Indoor Air Quality Procedure to calculate the ventilation requirements on this facility. The IAQP allows outside air to be determined based on applying air purification to control contaminants of concern, which may be generated by the occupants, building, furnishings or brought in through the outside air intakes. In general, in non-healthcare applications, the outside air can be reduced to 5 CFM per person, subject to building pressure when using the ASHRAE 62 IAQP. On this particular project, the outside air was reduced to 5 CFM per person and that was enough outside air to properly pressurize the building. Due to the minimum outside air required for pressurization, C02 sensors and DCV were not required, greatly reducing the complexity and cost of the building controls. After construction and full occupancy, a 3rd party air quality investigation was performed. The air quality was phenomenal. The indoor level of VOC’s were less than the outdoor level of VOC’s. If the building was designed using 100% outside air without GPS’ NBPI technology the indoor level of VOC’s would have been higher and equal to the outdoor levels. Based on the proximity of the campus to the interstate, the outside air quality is poor most of the time. A summary of the IAQ testing results are below.
