Do you know the history of Valentine’s Day? Valentine’s Day became a celebration when Romans celebrated a feast for Lupercalia. Lupercalia is an ancient Roman festival on February 15th. Every single time they had a Lupercalia celebration they would make a sacrifice of goats and dogs. The christian church chose to celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day in mid February. In the 1300s, people started celebrating Saint Valentine’s Day. As time went by the celebration grew more and more. In February, couples also celebrate anniversaries and sometimes in church’s they make a festival. A church found out that there was three different saints named Valentines or Valentinus. In February, people spend most of their money on chocolate and roses. In some countries people buy over 35 Million chocolate hearts and other people buy over 220 Million roses, in total they spend 20 Billion dollars. More than 62 percent of people celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day with candy or other gifts and romantic dinners. Saint Valentine’s Day and Christmas were celebrated more than Mothers Day.

THE

MLK Times As you can see in the pie

chart, the red represents the percentage of people who like the new gun. The blue represents the amount of people who don’t like it. Blue represents the amount who don’t care about it. Finally the green represents the amount of people who don’t play fortnite(They don’t have a life).

Another thing and the last we will be talking about is the chiller grenades added at 12:00 am 1/29/2019. The chiller grenades are like the old chiller pads. You can get them in the common rarity. You can throw them at someone and they’re feet freeze and they start sliding. You can use them to slide opponents off buildings, mountains and in the storm.

MLK Times Sports ReportBy: Antoinette Vargas

Dr. Martin Luther King may be a small school, but don’t underestimate the power of our athletes! This Winter Season, we have had some stand out players and outstanding student athletes.

In wrestling, Jamesly Cagelus, Tyron Bailey and John Wesley Lavarin have had an incredible season. Coach Provenza is incredibly proud of his wrestlers and continues to foster their already impressive skills.

Boys Basketball has some promising players in Davon Foster, Jai’sun Brown, MeSean Williams and Shaborn Goodman. Coach Barry Baity has lead the boys to numerous victories. 7th grader Tymere John Johnson credits Baity with teaching him how to play and inspiring him to learn more about the game.

Ms. Love’s cheerleaders are looking sharp! I had the personal pleasure of watch the cheer team at a recent game and their routines were polished, well-executed, genuinely enthusiastic. They have been receiving many compliments, even at away games, for their excellent performances and the cleaness of their routines.

According to Ms. Love, 8th grader Vah’Kyla Esdaile has been an exceptional captain since her 6th grade year. Additionally, she reports that students Tiviana Kenney and Juna Weedon, both 8th graders as well, have really stepped into a leadership this role. Lastly, she wanted to show some love to our first, and amazing, male cheerleader, Kahlil Crumes, has made an excellent addition to the team this year.

“This year the team has formed such a close bond,” Ms. Love divulged, “There is a real sense of community between them and they are really there to support each other- no drama or rivalry.” We know this is due to your excellent guidance and leadership, Ms. Love!

Not to be overlooked, Coach Schneider has also done an excellent job leading our Lady Bishop’s Basketball team. The ladies have come a long way and are improving daily. Coach Schneider was proud to inform us that three of his players, 8th graders Abira and Amaya Hodge and 7th grader Tasia Hill were selected to play in the All Star Game February 6th. Winter sports may almost be done- but don’t worry! Spring Sports Physicals are coming up Friday, February 8th. See the nurse for a form. Sports for the Spring Season include track, baseball, softball, and lacrosse. We hope to see you out there!

Teacher Overview: Geraldine Marquez DuarteMs. Vargas, Team 7, ELA

Antoinette Marie Vargas has two children, a daughter and a son. Her daughter is 12 years old and her son is 7 months. The 12 year old is a girl and her name is Lucia. Her son that’s 7 months old name is Deaglan.

She moved around a lot when she was young and went to collage in Arizona, Georgia, and went to New York City. She graduated from Kean University in New Jersey.

In 5 years she hopes to still be teaching students, which she loves.

She was a baker and pastry chef for a long time. She has always loved reading and writing and especially Shakespeare. After she had her daughter she realised she wanted to change paths and become a teacher. She loves sharing her passion for literature with her students. She loves her job but it can get frustrating if her students don’t understand the work or don’t like the work.

Outside of the classroom, she likes to dance and exercise especially because she likes to cook and eat. She loves being by the ocean even around winter time. But of course she is always reading a book.

MLK Times Editorial: Human Impact on the Environment

A problem that is going on in the world is human impact on the environment. This situation is going on in the world right now! We are the smartest inn this world, yet, we are the most clueless of the damage we are causing to the environment. Without drastic measures, one day humans will entirely destroy the wildlife and natural habitats.

Some ways people impact the environment in a bad way is pollution. It can be in any way. It could be as simple as throwing a bag of chips on the floor. To huge factories that pump a lot of smoke into the air. Another bad impact is destroying animal habitats. People cut trees, litter in wild areas, or it could be like something like bringing new animals into the natural habitats of other animals. There are a lot of ways people impact the environment in a bad way. However, a really big one is global warming. Global warming is when the temperature of the world rises. This could melt the ice caps and the world will flood. This has already started to happen.

Even though humans impact on the environment is a serious issue, there is a lot of things you can do to be not be part of the problem and be the solution. You can simply throw away garbage into a garbage bin instead of littering. You can also remember to recycle and not litter. You can also try not to use common household things that pollute the air. Even the little of things can prevent a huge problem. If everyone did at least one of these things, maybe human impact on the environment may not be as big as it is.

THE

MLK Times A Month of Respect and Remembrance

Black History MonthBy: Ms. Vargas

February may be a short month, but there is tremendous power in those 28 days. The celebration originated in 1925, as “Negro History Week” (this was the culturally appropriate word at the time) by African American historian Carter G. Woodson and became incredibly popular with the public. In 1975, the week-long observance was extended to the entire month of February, which coincides with Freedom Day, and the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln (Africanamericanhistorymonth.org)

What, therefore, are we expected to do for this month? What will we get out of it? It is a time, of course, to explore and admire the remarkable African Americans who have contributed to our society. Someone like Olaudah Equiano, a slave who bought his own way to freedom, traveled the world, wrote his own autobiography, and worked for the abolitionist movement, all before 1800 when the world had very little, if any racial tolerance (bbc.com) What about Cathay Williams, the woman who felt so strongly about freeing her fellow people that she disguised herself as a man and fought in the Civil War? Or Guion Bluford, the first Black man to walk in space? How about Zora Neale Hurston or Langston Hughes, two writers of the Harlem Renaissance who chronicled the Black Experience with sincerity and creativity (smithsonian.com).

This month, take a moment to learn something new about someone you may not have heard of before. Learn something new about someone new and think about the incredible accomplishments these men and women have performed. Join us at our Black History Month Extravaganza at the Asbury Convention Center where the district will focus on Black military members.
