What is thermal fa-gue? 

»   Degrada&on mechanism induced on primary piping system of a NPP. 

How important is this problem? 

»   Complete shut‐down of French PWR Civaux in 1998. 

»  Occured in Japanese PWR Tsuruga‐2 in 1999 & Tomari‐3 in 2003. 

 Thermal Fa*gue is seen as one of the most influen*al parameter affec*ng ageing and life management of NPP’s.

Conclusions 

»  Generally good agreement between experiments and LES predic&ons. 

»  LES is very much suitable for thermal fa&gue predic&ons.  

»  For the overall velocity and temperature predic&ons, STAR‐CCM+ was ranked 2nd among 29 interna&onal par&cipants. 

»  Given the mesh size difference between 1st and 2nd ranked par&cipants, we as a user of STAR‐CCM+ are very pleased with its capabili&es.
