DEFORESTATION DETECTION IN THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON IN 2017
VALIDATION APPROACH 536 polygons detected in 2017
by JJ-FAST (17% of polygons)
ScanSAR
Date 2 ScanSAR
Date 3

Date 1
Landsat-8
Date 4
Natural? Deforestation?
Weakness:
If deforestation happens between Date 1 &
Date 2 or Date 3 & Date 4
Possible combinations:
Natural/Deforestation (correct)
Natural/Degraded (correct)
Natural/Natural (misdetection)
Deforestation/Deforestation (misdetection)

VALIDATION RESULTS
indicating the need of a
deforestation mask or a more
accurate FNF map
Deforestation: there is no
single pattern

Some important findings
1. Different patterns of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon make
their detection by the change detection techniques difficult
2. We found significant number of omissions
3. The use of mask of old deforestation or a more accurate FNF map
is necessary
4. Country-specific JJ-FAST may be necessary in the future
5. Pairs of ALOS-2 ScanSAR scenes are necessary
6. “Active” polygons are top priority for field inspection
