March 30, 2013Hello Again,
Have you seen your first robin of the season? Who needs a calendar to know when springtime
weather is just around the corner? We country folks have our own way of knowing.
For example, the Parkside Restaurant in St. Johnsville is already open. As you know, Parkside is
one of the favorite watering holes and they are open seven days each week. This year, they are
offering some new specials.
Grandma, along with Gramps, is still digging Granny’s roadside eatery out from under the
winter snow. They may be open before you read this. If you can’t wait, bring a snow shovel and a
strong back. If they are not open, I will buy you all the soft ice cream you can eat and none after
they open.
Maybe I should explain why I will not buy you soft ice cream at Granny’s. This Hello Again column
is now read in over 20,000 homes with an average of over 3.5 residents in each home. That’s well
over 70,000 ice cream eaters. I may be slow but am neither rich or Santa — as you know he drives
a big red cattle truck during the warm weather season.
We have not poked fun at the clergy or church-goers in several months, so it must be their turn.
I believe even the good Lord enjoys a harmless joke once in a while.
This little bit of chatter was told to me as true. The former owner of the Daniel Green Slipper
Company in Dolgeville enjoyed his summers at his camp near Otsego Lake, played golf at the
Ryerson-Otsego golf course, and attended church in Cooperstown. A fellow golfer — known to all
as Coach — also played golf and
ushered at the same church. So
that you will better understand
this chatter, while Coach was a
good golfer and a grand guy, he was
also quite deaf. One Sunday while
ushering and passing the collection
basket, he handed the basket to
our Dolgeville friend. Due to his
deafness — he did not realize how
loud his voice was and with the
church in near silence — he said in
a loud voice, “You can do better
than that.” You can take bets that
everyone present knew they both
were in church that day. It may be
the best homily ever
remembered.
In keeping with our church collec-
tion basket chatter, it was told
that a little tot along with his Dad
watched while the ushers were
passing the collection plates. When
the usher stopped at the little
fellow’s pew, in a rather loud voice
said, “Don’t pay for me Daddy. I’m
under five.”

So we think we are a better educated, more advanced society with more and better benefits
than those of yester years? I have a photocopy of an envelope mailed by the war department to
Charles Walter Vosburgh of Palatine Bridge, NY dated April 18, 1919. The paid postage was one
cent. Citizens could mail a 1st class letter for one penny and now we have to pay nearly a half buck.
Are we advancing backwards?
In the issue of February 16, 2013 we published a list of the men and women from this area who
served our country in the so-called war to end all wars: the World War.
Charles R. Vosburgh of Palatine Bridge graciously allowed us to copy the honorable discharge
papers of his grandfather, a World War I veteran. I believe his father was the Montgomery County
sheriff.
One good deed deserves another. If you are in the market to buy hay or straw, give Mr. Vosburgh
a call: 518-993-3749. I’m sure he will be able to help.
I found it very interesting to learn that the Vosburgh family name and the Nellis family branched
from a common tree, or at least had common ancestors. It would be an interesting study to learn
of the connections of the families living in the Mohawk Valley. For example, who was related to
whom? In my case, our family history in America is basically only four generations old. We love
America but we are as Irish as Paddy’s pig.
Wouldn’t it be interesting to learn the family names now living in our valley? Whose family name
was part of our list of those who served in the first World War, second World War, and even the
Civil War?
This yarn is proof that it’s tough to beat apple pie. It seems that a Sunday School teacher was
teaching her young class about heaven and hell. She said, “All of you students who want to go to
Heaven say ‘I’.” Little Johnny Alone was mute. When his teacher asked, “Johnny, don’t you want to
go to Heaven?” he said, “When Grandpa drove me to Sunday School this morning, Mom was bak-
ing a couple of apple pies.”
This afternoon while writing Hello Again, I had an interesting visit with a lady who says she has
used her body as a human guinea pig/laboratory to study the affects of food as it pertains to her
own health. She said she is 72 but in my opinion she talks, thinks, walks as a 30 year old.
I should have asked her — “If some food does not seem to agree with you — is your body try-
ing to warn you? Could it be causing more damage than you ever imagined? For example, one of my
favorite dressings for a meat sandwich is mayo. My stomach has a continuing argument with
mayo. Is it possible that it is causing some serious problem unknown to me?”
Sunday to Christians will be the most important day of the year. The Bible teachers and I believe
the day we call Easter, Jesus willingly obeyed God the Father, allowed
his earthly human body to surrender to death on the cross so that we
who believe will be forgiven of our sins, and will enjoy eternal life with him.
Naturally this is a personal decision one must make — to believe in
Christ or not. I do not suggest you have to — I just wish you would.
Watch for the little red bike — when the robins come back, so will the
bike — wave hello and may God bless you, your family, and friends.

Answersto thisweek’spuzzles
This weight tips the scale at17.40 pounds. That’s muchtoo light to bench press withbut far too heavy to be apaperweight! It’s purpose? It’sa horse tie.
The flat bottom of the weightkeeps it from rolling around abuggy floor, instead restingeasy as one drives. If there isno place to tie up the horseonce reaching your destina-tion, the horse tie comes to therescue.
17 pounds may not seemlike enough weight to keep agrown horse from moving, butthe weight was carefully meas-ured when forged. Too heavyand the added weight in thebuggy would over-burden thehorse. Too light and the horsewouldn’t know it was tied. At17 pounds, the horse feelsenough of a tug to be fooledinto believing it is permanent-
ly tied.People not wanting to bother
with such a weight may traintheir horse to be ground-tied,where the site of its reigns
dangling to the ground fools ahorse into thinking it is per-manently tied. This weightcould be a useful tool inground-tied training, as well.

To compare vehi-cle loans, make achart with the fol-lowing six columns:names and phonenumbers of lenders, annual percentagerates for three-yearterm, four-yearterm, five-year term, and total interestcharges for eachloan. Call or checkWeb sites for atleast three lenderssuch as a creditunion, bank, andsavings and loanassociation to fill inyour columns. Usethis calculator fromFINRA or do themath to total thecost of each loan:h t t p ://apps.finra.org/Calcs/1/Loan
For example,assuming an inter-est rate of 6 percentfor all three timeperiods and a$15,000 car loan,the monthly pay-ment on a 3-yearloan would be$456.33 ($16,428total: $456.33 x 36months). A 4-yearloan would cost$352.28 perm o n t h a n d$16,909.44 total($352.28 x 48months) and a 5-year loan wouldcost $290 permonth and $17,400total (290 x 60months).
Home equity loansmay be a good wayto finance your pur-chase. The primaryadvantage of usinga home equity loanis that you will beable to deduct theinterest charges onyour tax return (ifyou itemize deduc-tions). The majordisadvantages arethat you are puttingyour home in jeop-ardy if you can’tmake your car pay-ments, and you willbe charged extraexpenses such as ahome appraisal, title insurance, fil-ing fees, and anorigination fee toestablish a homeequity loan.
Dealerships mayhave special financ-ing packages. Don’thesitate to use thissource of funding, but you want to beprepared and doyour homeworkbefore you sign thepaperwork on yournew vehicle. Thebest financial choiceis the shortest loanwith the lowestinterest rate andlowest extra financecharges. In theabove example, youcould save $972from a three-yearloan compared to afive-year loan.

Sometimes, it’s best tostop driving altogether. How do you know whenit’s time to give up thekeys? It may be obvious, like when someone has aserious disease withsymptoms that makedriving unsafe. In othercases, it is not clear, aswith a person with verymild dementia whosedriving skills decline veryslowly. Whatever the rea-son, it’s time to stopwhen your driving endan-gers you or other peopleon the road.
Talk to your familymembers, friends, or doc-tor to see if they haveconcerns about yourdriving. A driver rehabili-tation specialist can alsorecommend whether ornot you should stop driv-ing after evaluating yourhealth and abilities.

Did you know that hav-ing a working smokealarm reduces a person’schance of dying in a fireby half?
For the best protection, install smoke alarms onevery level of your home, including the basement, outside every sleepingarea and in every bed-room. Smoke alarmsshould be mounted on
ceilings or high on walls, about four to 12 inchesfrom the ceiling, and test-ed monthly by pushingthe test button.
It’s also important toreplace smoke alarm bat-teries at least once a yearunless they are 10-yearlithium batteries. If yoursmoke alarms are hard-wired, they still have bat-teries in case of a poweroutage. Be sure to replacethese batteries, too.
One good way to re-member to change the
batteries in all yoursmoke alarms is to do itwhen you set your clocksback in fall or ahead inspring. You also need toreplace the battery if youtest the unit and don’thear the alarm or any-time you hear a “chirp,”which indicates low bat-tery power.
Smoke alarms sensorsdo not last forever. Themaximum life span iseight to 10 years. Afterthat time, the entire unitshould be replaced.
Check the manufacturedate on the back of theunit. If there is none, def-initely replace the entireunit now. Or if the unitdoes not respond proper-ly when tested, replace itimmediately.
Most hardware storescarry both battery-oper-ated ionization and pho-toelectric smoke alarmsfor about $10 to $25apiece. Ionization alarmsare triggered by smokeand respond quickly toheat and flames. Photo-
electric alarms detectsmoke from a smolderingfire before it spreads rap-idly. It’s recommendedthat you have both typesin your home.
Smoke alarms contain-ing these two types ofsensors in the same unitalso are available atmany outlets. Or consid-er replacing your alarmswith the newer combina-tion smoke and carbonmonoxide type units.
Regardless of what youchoose, always look for
the UL (UnderwritersLaboratories) or otherrecognized testing labora-tory label. And rememberto write the date of instal-lation inside the alarm’scover as a reminder ofwhen you will need to re-place the unit.
Don’t take chances. The cost of a new batteryor new smoke alarm —and a few minutes of yourtime a month to test thealarm — is a small priceto pay for your family’ssafety.
Smoke alarms save lives
by Paul G. Donohue, M.D.Differences between
hepatitis B and C
Dear Dr. Donohue: Myhusband and I are in our50s. Both of us had anexam this year from dif-ferent doctors. Bloodtests showed that weboth have hepatitis C.Neither of us feels sick, and neither of us ever re-members acquiring thisinfection. Our doctors saywe don’t need any treat-ment. What is the treat-ment if we ever do? Arewe infectious to others?— K.K.
Answer: In NorthAmerica, hepatitis B andC are the two most com-mon kinds of viral hepati-tis. In the United States, about 1.25 million are in-fected with hepatitis Bvirus. Five percent of in-fected people go on to de-velop a chronic infection, one in which the virus re-mains in the liver, andthese people face the pos-
sibility of coming downwith liver cirrhosis or liv-er cancer. A vaccine forthe prevention of hepati-tis B is available.
Hepatitis C infectsaround 3 million Ameri-cans. In contrast withhepatitis B, around 70percent to 80 percent willhave a chronic infection.A sizable number willcome down with liver cir-rhosis or cancer, but thatdoesn’t happen rightaway. It takes 20 or moreyears before those com-plications arise.
When treatment of hepa-titis C is advised, two medi-cines have been given si-multaneously for manyyears. Those drugs arepeginterferon and ribavirin.About 50 percent of chron-ic hepatitis C patients re-spond well to this regimen. However, blacks have apoorer response, with only25 percent achieving viralsuppression.
A true breakthroughhas arrived in the treat-
ment of hepatitis C. Twonew drugs, telaprevir (In-civek) and boceprevir (Vic-trelis) have had a huge im-pact in improving treat-ment success. Either ofthese drugs, given in con-junction with the standardtreatment of ribavirin andpeginterferon, greatly in-creases the cure rates forblacks and whites.
An initial sickness afteracquiring hepatitis Cvirus is rare, and, that’swhy you and your hus-band didn’t realize youwere infected. The viruscan be transmittedthrough blood transfu-sions (no longer a threat),sharing needles for druginjections, rarely throughsexual relations andhousehold contact, butmore possibly throughpromiscuous sex and inways yet to be deter-mined. You’re not athreat to others.
The booklet on hepati-tis describes these infec-tions and their treatment,
not including the latesttreatments.
Dear Dr. Donohue: Mybrother cracks hisknuckles. It gives me theshivers, and I know hedoes it to annoy me. Canyou give me any informa-tion that will scare him, like coming down witharthritis? — L.C.
Answer: I’d love to giveyou some informationthat would stop yourbrother from cracking hisknuckles. It bothers me,too. I can’t come up withany. It doesn’t causearthritis.
To produce the crack-ing sound, a person pullshis finger in such a waythat it creates a bubble inthe joint fluid. Then thebubble bursts and makesa cracking noise when itdoes.
I can’t understand whypeople do this.

To your good health
(BPT) — If April show-ers bring May flowers, what do winter’ssnowflakes bring? Per-haps it’s an excuse tocurl up with your favoritemagazines and imaginethe kitchen makeover ofyour dreams. When thecold winter months keepyou indoors, use the timeto take care of things thatwill make your remodel-ing plans much easier totackle in the spring.
Determine the scopeof your project:
Do you need just a fewcoats of paint or a wholenew kitchen? Take this
time to evaluate whatyou want to accomplish. If you need to work witha designer or contractor, now is the time to doyour research and en-gage professional help toplan. Look to online re-sources like the NationalAssociation of the Re-modeling Industry andHouzz or ask friends andfamily for recommenda-tions. Meet with a fewprospects and see whosework and costs fit yourneeds. You should alsodetermine your budgetand use that to guide therest of your planning de-cisions.
Look for trends thatlast:
Once you have a goodsense for what your proj-ect will involve, have fundreaming up all the de-tails. Are you looking tomake a bold statement orcreate a timeless look? Nomatter how large or smallyour project, there aremany current trends thatcan make a big impact inyour home, yet will standthe test of time. In thekitchen, white cabinetryhas had a resurgence ofpopularity and can createa classic look or serve asthe perfect complementto colorful statement
pieces that can be easilyswapped out as trendschange.
Throughout the home, universal design is alsobecoming an increasinglyimportant trend to con-sider. Planning your re-model so the space iscomfortable to use for allages and abilities will notonly ensure your long-term enjoyment of thespace, but can also helpwith resale value downthe road. “As more andmore homeowners arelooking to age in place, they’re demanding de-signs that accommodatetheir changing needs
without compromising onstyle,” says Sarah Reep,Merillat Cabinetry’s de-sign lead.
Clean house:When you’re ready to
get started on your re-model, you won’t want toworry about cleaning.Take time now to look ateverything stored in yourkitchen and pantry anddetermine what stays andwhat can go. It’ll makeprepping for renovationprojects that much easi-er. How old are thosespices? What about thatstack of lids with no con-tainer to match? Have
lots of totes and bagshanging around? Donatethe ones you don’t useand organize the rest. Ifyou have kitchen itemsyou can’t part with butyou rarely use, packthem up now and storethem until the remodel iscomplete. You’ll want asmuch free space to keepthings out of the way dur-ing your remodel as pos-sible.
If you take time now toget prepared for yourkitchen remodel, you’llthank yourself in a fewmonths when the kitchenof your dreams is comingto life.

(BPT) — Consumercomplaints and lawsuitsregarding home improve-ments are on the rise ac-cording to Ripoff Reports;a homeowner that doesnot do their homework be-fore embarking on a proj-ect could find themselveswith poor workmanship, inferior products, healthand safety issues or evenlegal problems.
So what’s a homeownerin need of a fix up to do?
“Start by reviewing thethree most common mis-takes people make whenembarking on a home im-provement project,” saysDave Harrison, chief mar-keting officer of Champi-on Windows, Sunrooms,Roofing and Home Exteri-o r s(www.GetChampion.com).
Mistake number one:Buying Only on PriceYour home is probably
one of the most expensiveitems you own, so mak-
ing improvements is notthe place to budget shop.“Make sure you are get-ting quality products pro-fessionally installed. Aproperly done home im-provement should onlyhave to be done once,”added Harrison, “and re-member the old adage‘you get what you payfor’.”
Mistake number two:Not looking at the
Long TermInvestment BenefitsWhen your home im-
provement project is final-ly over, you should be get-ting more than an up-grade to your home; youshould also see an in-crease in your home’s val-ue. When you do it rightyou can reduce energyand maintenance costsand increase comfort andpride in your home, andnever have to worry aboutit again for as long as youown your home.
On the flip side a poorlyexecuted project can low-er the value of your home, have to be re-done in sev-eral years and even putyour family’s health atrisk. For example, waterdamage from faulty win-dows could cause mold.
Mistake number three:Not Knowing How toScreen a Contractor“I’ve seen many inde-
pendently owned con-tractors close their busi-nesses after a short yearor two,” said Harrison.“When selecting a con-tractor to work with it isimportant to get a senseof who they are, whatproducts they use andhow long they have beenin business.”
According to Harrisonthere are four essentialquestions to ask duringthis screening process:
• Who designs it?• Who builds it?• Who installs it?
• Who guarantees it?“When you don’t get the
correct answers to thesefour questions you mayend up with an inferiorinvestment, expensivesurprises, property dam-age or even lawsuits andliabilities,” says Harrison.“Ultimately, the answeryou want is that there is asingle source of account-ability for your project.Having one company de-sign, build, install andguarantee the productand work, as Championdoes, can save you time, money and hassles in thelong run.”
Make sure you have acontractor relationshipyou can trust for thelong-term. This long-termrelationship starts with aquality product and pro-fessional installation andincludes a lifetime war-ranty from a companythat has longevity andprovides you with a sensethat they will still be in
business five or ten yearsdown the road.
You should also ensurethat your warranty istransferable, applies toall systems, applicationsand materials, and isnon-prorated. A non-pro-
rated warranty is consid-ered to be the most valu-able as it means that themanufacturer or sellerwill replace or repair theitem at no cost to thebuyer if there is a prob-lem with a product.

WASHINGTON, D.C. —The U.S. Department ofTransportation’s NationalHighway Traffic SafetyAdministration (NHTSA)announced a new iOS appfor iPhones and iPodTouches that will providereal-time vehicle safetyinformation to consumersfrom NHTSA’sSaferCar.gov site. NHT-SA’s SaferCar app allowsusers to search its 5-StarSafety Ratings for vehiclesby make and model, lo-cate car seat installationhelp, file a vehicle safetycomplaint, find recall in-formation and subscribeto automatic noticesabout vehicle recalls.
NHTSA will also give de-velopers real-time accessto the data that powersthis app through an Appli-cation Programming Inter-face (API), enabling themto integrate these datainto new and existingapps and empoweringconsumers with impor-tant safety information.Millions of consumers al-ready rely on these data toinform their purchasingdecisions on popular au-tomobile review sites; nowthey’ll be able to accessthese data in real-time.
“Safety is our highestpriority, and we’re alwaysworking to find new andbetter ways for people toaccess SaferCar, one ofthe most popular pro-grams on our website,”said U.S. TransportationSecretary Ray LaHood.“This app takes advan-tage of the latest technol-ogy to ensure that con-sumers have the real-time information theyneed to buy safe, drivesafe and stay safe.”
The new SaferCar appgives consumers immedi-ate access to key safetyinformation to help themmake informed decisions, with features including:
• 5-Star Safety Ratings:Consumers consideringvehicle purchases can lookup crash test ratings andcompare them across dif-ferent makes and models.
• Recalls and Com-plaints: App users canstay on top of safety is-sues for vehicles they al-ready own. Consumerscan register their vehiclesto be notified by NHTSA ifa safety issue is discov-ered. The app also makesit simple to submit com-plaints to NHTSA regard-ing possible safety prob-
lems with a particular ve-hicle.
• Help Installing ChildSeats: The app helps con-sumers ensure their mostprecious passengers ridesafe. Users can quicklyget driving directions tothe nearest child seat in-spection station and getassistance to properly in-stall their car seats andboosters.
•Safety Headlines andAlerts: App users can re-ceive important news andinformation from NHTSA,as well as recall noticesand push notices on theirrecorded vehicles.
The announcement isjust the first phase for theSaferCar app for iPhoneand iPod Touch devices, which can be downloadedfrom Apple’s iTunesStore. Development isalso underway for a ver-sion compatible with An-droid devices. The launchof the NHTSA app is partof ongoing efforts by thenation’s chief automotivesafety agency to make iteasier for consumers toaccess and submit infor-mation about importantvehicle safety concerns.Earlier this year, theagency also updated re-
sources on itswww.SaferCar.gov web-site to enable consumersto quickly locate informa-tion on specific safety de-fect investigations, com-plaints and vehicle re-calls.
The app launch coin-cides with the release ofthe NHTSA ApplicationProgramming Interface(API) — a new way to pro-
vide these importantsafety data. The APIs willprovide developers withbetter, more flexible ac-cess to the data for analy-sis and integration intocreative, consumer-friendly web and mobileapps.
Unleashing open datain formats that are easyto use in new and innova-tive ways, while rigorous-
ly protecting privacy —has been a priority for theObama Administration. The release of NHTSAdata as an API is a con-tinuation of that commit-ment.
NHTSA intends to re-lease an online course toteach developers how touse the new APIs.

How will you spend your tax refund? Another flat-screen TV? An iPad? Clothes? The Car Care Council has a better idea for your money: spend it on your secondbiggest investment, your car.
“Whether it’s an oil change, replacing brakes or new belts and hoses, that peri-odic repair bill is a drop in the bucket compared to monthly payments on a newcar,” said Rich White, executive director Car Care Council. “The bottom line is thata properly maintained vehicle is safer, more dependable, more fuel efficient, lesspolluting and more valuable. The smartest way to get a solid return on investmentis to keep your car through what we call the ‘Cinderella Era.’ It’s that period of timeafter the payoff when your car is still in great shape and needs only modest re-pairs.”
With proper care, the typical vehicle should deliver at least 200,000 miles of safe, dependable performance. The most common maintenance procedures and repairsto keep your car operating safely and reliably while maintaining its long-term val-ue involve checking the oil, filters and fluids, the belts and hoses, brakes, tires andair conditioning. The council also recommends an annual tune-up and wheel align-ment.
“Last year, the average tax refund was nearly $3,000. By simply allocating a por-tion, or the equivalent of just one new car payment, consumers could cover an en-tire year’s worth of basic maintenance and live happily ever after with their currentvehicle,” said White.
The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware”consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s Car Care Guideor for more information, visit www.carcare.org.
