The Grade 6 students have started AWESOME writing
with Mrs. Swallow. The idea of looking at the small,
awesome things in our lives came from Neil Pasricha’s
‘Book of Awesome’, where he describes popping bubble
wrap, sharing your French fries, the smell of bakery air –
anything and everything that may be awesome to people,
but may also be taken for granted. He encourages us to find
awesome everywhere!
First topic chosen by the students:
Valleyview School’s Awesome Gym
♦ You step on the best polished floor and run like a
mad man. You smell that great amazing smell of
clean waxed floor. ( by Kein) ♦ When I go into the gym, it is shiny and looks cool.
It smells like arm pits and dirty underwear. (Brent) ♦ The gym smells like a room full of sweaty hockey
players, with spots of perspiration speckling the
floor. (Hunter) ♦ The amazing basketball aroma makes me feel like
I’m at home. (Connor) ♦ It is spectacular when you get a three point shot in.
Its so cool. (?) ♦ The wrinkly feeling of the climbing walls, the never-
ending echo of runners traveling across the gym –
awesome! ( Kadence) ♦ The awkward groan of the old wooden doors as you
open them and are greeted with the inviting wide
open space, occupied by a simple and adorable fold
up jungle gym and the darkly colored climbing wall.
That faint, brand-new smell of the new maroon col-
oured mats that cover the creamy white walls. You
can tell you are in for a treat. ( Nia) ♦ I hear soccer balls being kicked, goals being scored,
people cheering with excitement. ( Yelana) ♦ That loud ‘crack’ as you open and step onto that
newly polished gym floor and take in a big whiff of
that sweaty athlete odor. ( Keira) ♦ Our gym – awesome!
February 16th is World Read Aloud Day - plan to join the world reading aloud to your children and have your
children read aloud to you.
Did you know?
Reading 20 minutes each day can introduce at least 1,460,000 words per year!
Our Awesome School Clusters:
What an amazing line up of clusters we have
this time around! Clusters are enrichment
activities that allow the students voice and
choice in their learning. Cluster choices this
time are:
♦ Party prep – students planning Valleyview
School’s 50th birthday party ( March 22) ♦ Song writing songs – students learning how to
write songs and add in instruments ♦ Artzooka – anything the students want to
explore that is art ♦ Break out – our very own adapted Escape room,
with students creating clues to design their own
mystery to solve. ♦ Hockey – includes ice and floor hockey ♦ Mindfulness/self-esteem – learning to deal with
stress and being mindful while feeling good,
and finding ways to help others feel good, too. ♦ Finger knitting/corking – learning to knit using
your fingers ♦ Markers/design challenge – create useful items
using the design process ♦
All clusters include academic rigor, student
choice, and the creation of a product or
service for others. Ask your child what
clusters they are in. If you have skills or a
passion in any of the above areas, please
contact the school to get involved. We
encourage and appreciate all community
involvement! Dates: January 24, February
1,10 21, and March 2. Our cluster assembly
will be March 13th at 2:30. Feel free to drop
in and see what we learned!
Why Clusters are important at Valleyview
School by Ulia
I think that clusters are important because we
get to do a lot of things that we can’t do at
home. Clusters are fun. Each time we do
something in clusters, we are learning some-
thing new! There are a lot of thing we can do:
If you want to learn how to draw a detailed
picture, you can. If you like to write and
make up music, you can do that too. Clusters
is all about learning something new and
having fun. Whatever you want to do it is a
chance to go for it!
Scholastics Book
Fair, I Love to Read
Week, and Family
Literacies Night
Mark the week of March 6-10 on your
calendar – its going to be exciting! Its ‘I Love to Read
Week’. Many activities are being planned to enrich our
reading, writing and thinking!
Scholastics Book fair will be running Wednesday,
March 8th from 1:00-4:00 and 6:00-7:30 (during Family
Literacies Night), and on Thursday, March 9th from
1:00-4:00. Look for the flyers to come home near the
end of February. As always, there will be hundreds of
books to choose, from pre-school to teen picks.
Volunteers are needed to help work at the book fair for
both afternoons. Please contact Mrs. Swallow if you are
available.
Family Literacies Night has become an annual event.
The community involvement in the past has been
excellent! It provides families the opportunity to
participate in new literacy activities as a family and with
others from our community, and to enjoy and be actively
involved with building these skills with your children.
We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, March 8
from 6:00-7:30. The format of the evening is come
and go at your pleasure, with you and your children
choosing which activities to participate in. It is open to
all families from our school. As a staff, we look forward
to sharing our love of literacy with you!
