AHS Feedback Dear Parents and Carers, I continue to be really impressed by the standard of uniform since September. As I greet students each morning, we are seeing an increasing number of AHS hoodies being worn. As the colder weather approaches, I would like to remind families that these can be worn as part of the school uniform. Hoodies can be purchased from Keal Teamwear (105 Walmgate, YO1 9UA / 01904 624497 / www.keal-teamwear.com/schoolwear). Food for Thought This week during Collective Worship, form groups have been reflecting on the achievements and life of Jesse Owens and what the Bible has to say about discrimination, as part of Black History Month. The Gold Award continues to highlight those students who staff appreciate “going the extra mile”. This is the term when Year 11 students should be considering their future choices and exploring educational provision for post 16. The IAG day offered an insight into what we can offer here at AHS Sixth Form and our Open Evening, on Thursday 13 November, will offer further information. Mental Health Awareness day - 10 OctoberOur mental health is just like our physical health: everybody has it and we need to take care of it. Mental health problems affect around one in four people in any given year. They range from common problems, such

as depression and anxiety, to rarer problems such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The AHS Mental Health Champions are hard at work promoting mental health awareness and campaigns for positive mental wellbeing. They have been creating posters, fundraising and spreading the message around school. Please ask them what they are working on, or how you can support them.

Charity Cake BakingAbbey Driffield, Isla Lister and Orla Durmaz, all Year 9, have made an outstanding contribution to Macmillan. Organised totally independently, they collected £93.11 from a cake sale and combined with other money already raised, they achieved a fabulous grand total of £168.08. Compassionate work!

Exploring the world with Google EarthStudents have been ‘flying’ around the world this term during their geography lessons. All seat belts have been fastened and emergency exits highlighted as they ‘travelled’ to places like Uluru in Australia, the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai and Las Vegas in USA. Through the use of Google Earth we have been able to strengthen our abilities to locate places outside of the UK (a key Geography skill), whilst also encouraging our inquisitive Geographers to take a closer look through the street view and 360 function – we’ve even been able to pop inside one of the apartments on Palm Jumeirah! Where will we go to next? Suggestions on a postcard please.

Looking forward…We are well underway with the Autumn term now and this means that assessments will be taking place in the not too distant future.

Year 13 will be completing mock exams week commencing Monday 10 December. These are important exams that will direct the intervention and support required for the rest of the academic year. Students will be prepped for these exams, but they should now be adapting their current study timetable to ensure they are planning their time appropriately. The half-term break will be a vital part of their revision period and they will be given plenty of revision activities to support their progress. For many of our Year 13 students the BTEC external assessments will follow these mock exams in January. They have the extra added pressure of ensuring they are utilising their time accordingly now and planning ahead to facilitate the extra preparation required.

Year 12 will be completing mock exams after Christmas, week commencing Monday 21 January. Despite these being some time away students should now have an appropriate study timetable that they have devised based upon their working patterns and any outside commitments they may have. A regular structured study timetable will embed good study habits and ensure that they are consolidating the knowledge and skills being delivered in lessons. Consolidation as they learn now will put them in the best possible position to succeed in the pending assessments.

Student Leader RolesWe have revised the Student Leadership structure and on Monday the new roles will be released for Year 12. Students will have one week to consider the roles available and compose an application if they are interested (deadline: Monday 22 October). We enjoy large numbers year on year and despite the new structure, anticipate lots of interest. The most committed students will be successful. They must live into being our School Values and demonstrate exemplary conduct at all times. These are the students the rest of the student body will look to. We are excited to welcome the new team soon!

The KS3 School Council met for the first time this week. They were really enthusiastic and it was excellent to hear the thoughtful contributions they want to make to the school. They discussed the strengths of the school, but also highlighted a number of practical issues they would like to help address within school. In our next meeting, we will discuss how we might achieve these aims and how we can promote these to the rest of school. Here is a selection of what we talked about: Highlighted the following areas of school they really like: • The council agreed that the school had listened to them in terms of social areas. They thought it was excellent that they are now able to eat outside as this gave them more space and fresh air. • They also praised the PSHE content and said it had helped them improve their lifestyles, in particular focusing on the amount of exercise needed and the dangers of misuse of drugs. • They felt the one way system has improved the flow of the school and the corridors feel better as students move around the school. • The council also highlighted how the school listens to their views and it does its best to make changes when it can. Highlighted the following areas for development: • Merits - The council felt that students weren’t aware of what merits meant and didn’t have any incentive to achieve these.• In mixed ability classes, teachers could highlight the Bright Sparks Challenge more and ensure students know how it might benefit them if they complete this.• Year 8s and clubs - It highlighted they loved the Super 7 Club Challenge in Year 7 and would like to see more done to get Year 8s into clubs. This could also include more clubs. What is the school going to do?• Mr Arthur will highlight the merit challenge in assembly and encourage each form to compete to get the most merits for a form party.• Look at ways students can be recognised in lessons each time they complete a Bright Sparks Challenge.• Mr Williams will investigate the possibility of more technology and design clubs.• Mr Arthur will find ways to encourage, recognise and reward attendance at clubs. As a council, the students want to prioritise the following this year: • The healthiness of school food. The council felt school can do more to help students make healthy choices in the school canteen and have ideas about how to promote this.• Improving areas where litter is a problem in school.• Working to introduce a debating club.

FootballThe Y10 team managed to come from behind to beat a strong Fulford side on Tuesday evening. In difficult playing conditions the boys continued to work together as a team and despite a goal line scramble in the dying seconds, they finished 2-1 winners. Fin Tomlinson was the stand out performer.

The Y7, 8 and 9 teams were in action this week against Joseph Rowntree School. The Y7 team drew 1-1 with man of the match awarded to Harry Pool. The Y9 team won 6-5, Lewis Carruthers, man of the match with his hat trick. The Y10’s unfortunately didn’t win, losing 4-2, but put in a disciplined performance against a tough team.

NetballWe had two fantastic Y11 netball teams playing in their netball tournament this week against local schools. There was tough opposition and unfortunately we weren’t able to get through to the final, but the students persevered throughout maintaining a positive attitude and excellent effort. Star player of the team going to Olivia Stevens for her team spirit, compassion to others and enthusiasm throughout the entire tournament. Well done to all the ladies that took part.

For the first game of the season, Y7 were on winning form this week producing a 6-4 win over Tadcaster Grammar, unfortunately the Y8’s could not produce a win, but it was also a close game of 3 points to 5. All students showed compassion to others, team spirit and enthusiasm. Stars of the match go to Esme Pounder and Jess Taylor for their fantastic defending and Arya Dorjee and Issy Reed for their committed attacking play. Well done to all the ladies that took part.

RugbyThe Y7 boys played their very first rugby festival in an AHS jersey on Monday evening. The event was organised and officiated by the York City Knights Foundation, also involved the Vale of York Academy and a very strong Sherburn team. Mr Goldsmith was impressed by the level of teamwork, resilience and skill displayed. Each and every one of the boys put in a very competitive performance. For some, it was their debut in a rugby match. The boys won their game against the VOYA but were beaten by Sherburn. Well done!
