This Week’s Main School News

Polite ReminderThe school drive is closed every day from 3.05-3.25pm to allow our students to leave the school site safely. We ask that for those waiting for it to open again, to please have their engines turned off for everyone’s health.

York Music Hub FestivalAHS students were involved all weekend as around a thousand talented young musicians showcased their skills across the city, attracting large crowds as part of HubFest. Believed to be the biggest youth music festival York has ever seen, HubFest was held in various locations around York with youngsters playing all kinds of music as part of York Music Hub’s Festival. During the festival, there was an opportunity to hear former, current and future AHS students who are part of the YMF Jazz Orchestra that headlined the Youth Proms last year at the Albert Hall, The AHS Youth Orchestra, The York Music Centre String Orchestra and concert band, The AHS Chamber Choir and the Sixth Form band Ha-Ha, The York Light Youth Choir and the award-winning Shepherd Group Youth Brass Band.On Saturday, City Sounds featured live music, demos and workshops at stages and spaces all across the city from Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, to Coppergate, the Spurriergate Centre and St Helen’s Square. Molly Newton, Music Lead for Pathfinder MAT and strategic manager at York Music Hub said: "Our vision for Saturday in town was that you wouldn't be able to walk anywhere in the city centre without hearing music being played and I think we achieved that vision” Crowds gathered in the different locations to watch young musicians perform and to join in with workshops. An AHS Year 7 student, who is part of the Archbishop Holgate's School Youth Orchestra, commented: "I am very excited to be playing in front of so many people. I am also excited to hear everyone else performing their songs. In the evening, there was a gala concert at the National Railway Museum which featured performances from the city’s top young musicians and was compered by AHS Head Boy, James Cain, and future AHS student, Oscar Rosen. The Sunday Showcase saw AHS students again taking part along with pupils from three other city secondary schools performing at the University of York. The programme included a variety of ensembles from choirs and big bands to chamber groups and orchestras. Craig Brown, Assistant Manager at York Music Hub said: "We are really grateful to all the performers, families, teachers and supporters for helping make the festival possible." (York Press)To find out more about (or to get involved with) the event next year, go to [email protected]. If you'd like to donate to HubFest please visit their JustGiving page.

Student Achievement - Congratulations to Megan Wilkie, 7NTh, who passed her Grade 2 Piano exam.

Apollo Reading ChallengeCongratulations to all those Year 7 and 8 students who have taken part in the Apollo reading challenge this year. A number of students have been particularly committed to the challenge throughout the year: Henry Bate, Amy Bazira, Freddie Fenwick, Erin Hawkins, Logan Lister, Cara Munzer, Freya Brumby, Jake Buckton, Scarlett Parkins, Kyle Taylor and Isobel Hanson. These students spoke articulately and thoughtfully about their favourite Apollo novels at our celebration event on Monday with Mr Daly, Miss Woolerton and Ms Evans; we were so inspired to hear students speaking passionately about the books they are reading and we look forward to further reading challenges in September. Enjoy a summer of reading everyone!

The Brilliant Club Scholars ProgrammeWell done to our ‘brilliant’ Year 7 and 8 students for completing the Scholars Programme. They successfully produced a 1500 word assignment on “Disease Detectives”. The work was of University

standard and students even received a degree-based grade. Very big congratulations to Paula Sola Farrus, Matthew Dalgliesh, Kaitlyn Archer and Ben Slack who secured a 1st. This means they gained more than 70%! I cannot put into words just how phenomenal this achievement is. Everyone who took part did exceptionally well. I am overwhelmed with these outcomes and the way each student rose to the challenge. They are now on a certain path towards living out high aspirations and making their dreams become a reality. (Mr Young)Well done and congratulations to: Sebi Ackerley Paula Sola Farrus Nihal Ahmed Matthew Dalgliesh Lucie Daniel Kaitlyn Archer James Tipping George Innes Ben Slack Eva Van De Zee Alika Estabrooks Alice Woolway

OF THE WEEK

Year 12/13 Workskills Trip to Dalby Forest. We visited Dalby Forest on Monday to celebrate Trinity, Jacob, Connor and Benjamin completing the Workskills course. We set off early, to enjoy the fine weather. On arrival we decided to begin with a gentle walk around Staindale Lake. The summer flowers were in bloom and the ducks eagerly paddled across, hoping for scraps of bread and food. The trees were reflected in the tranquil water and bees buzzed from flower to flower. It was idyllic. We spent some time perfecting the art of skimming stones, ably demonstrated by Mr Bryan, Connor, Alfred and Jacob. After the walk, there was time for a short break, for refreshments. We needed our energy for the cricket and football and for testing our skills on the balance trail. Benjamin and Alfred were our balancing experts! Meanwhile Trinity and Philippa were busy scaling the climbing frame. The time flew by, so, after a break for lunch, we made our way back to school – tired, but happy.

The students produced business plans and presentations as they pitched their new business ideas to a group of entrepreneurs from around the country at the Ron Cooke Hub at York University. Everyone performed admirably and gained a lot of positives from the competition, and while the teams were able to make it into the final, they had some fantastic out of classroom experiences. Well done to all involved! (Mr Charlton)

LockersIf students are going on any school trips during the last week of term, they must ensure their locker is emptied of any personal items. The lock and key are the students’ property. Any items left in lockers after 19 July will be disposed of.Lockers will be available to be purchased again from the middle of September onwards. Details will be given nearer the time.

Lost property Any unnamed items found around school are placed in the blue lost property bins kept in main school Reception. Students are able to come to Reception during break and lunchtime every day to check the bins.At the end of term, any items not claimed will either go to charity or be disposed of.

Year 7 Geography Field Trip to Flamborough Head and BridlingtonWe had a fantastic trip to the beach over three days last week; the weather held (just!); sun on Tuesday, drizzle on Wednesday and perfect by Thursday. Year 7 created Long Shore Drift diagrams, investigated coastal management and discovered a diverse and rich marine ecology in Bridlington. Discoveries included fossilised death assemblage and bivalve, live sea snails, crabs, molluscs, winkles and anemones (the red squidgy jelly like blobs which clung to the rocks). Fierce debate followed the discovery that the sea defences at Bridlington will have cost upwards of £10 million; was it worth the money? And why have thirty-nine villages disappeared along this coastline since Roman times? After lunch, and an ice cream, students explored the coastal erosion at Selwick’s Bay, Flamborough Head (where the lighthouse is); we crouched in a cave, walked under an arch, stood next to a stack and did a Mexican wave on a wave cut platform. More fossils were found, along with Scottish (?) granite brought down by the ice sheet and an understanding of the natural processes that affect each and every one of us who lives on this island. The Year 7 students were excellent ambassadors for Geography and a field trip is always the better for getting wet feet, dirty hands and a huge dose of fresh air.

Archbishop of York’s Young Leaders AwardPresentation EveningWe hope that many students in Year 9, along with their family and friends, will be able to join us at the presentation of the Archbishop of York’s Young Leaders Awards by the Right Reverend Dr John Thomson, the Bishop of Selby, on Wednesday 10 July. This project has been developed by the Archbishop of York Youth Trust and has been personally overseen by Archbishop Sentamu. The Director of the Youth Trust, Dan Finn, will also be present and speaking at the ceremony and we will have some musical entertainment from AHS students. Please return the reply slip attached to the letter students have brought home as soon as possible, indicating how may seats are required. The ceremony will take place in the main school Hall, 7.00pm, and will be followed by light refreshments. We would ask students to arrive for 6.30pm to ensure we know which recipients are present. We look forward to welcoming many of you to this celebration event.

Archbishop of York’s Young Leaders Awards As part of their work to attain the Young Leaders Award, Abbey Driffield (Year 9) and her friends held a charity bake sale, raising money for the English department. This has been gratefully received, and will go towards buying new books for the Library. Many thanks girls!

AthleticsEven though the weather was against us this week we had a fantastic turn out for the finals of the North Yorkshire schools competition. All the students performed tremendously. We had some students coming first overall, those being Caitlin Calvert in the 100m and Long Jump, Esme Pounder in the Hurdles, Lottie Langan in the 1500m, Georgia Sutcliffe in the 800m, Dan Hogben in the High Jump and Lewis Hanson in the Shot. Well done to everyone involved.

TennisWell done to the boys’ Tennis team who played very well in a closely fought, high quality encounter against Joseph Rowntree School. The Year 8s and 9s both won (19 games - 13 games and 20 - 12 respectively).A special mention goes to Sebi Ackerley, Josh Ffrench-Adam and Jake Fewlass who all acquitted themselves admirably playing up a year.

RoundersWith the sunshine coming out we were able to complete our fixture against The Mount School this week where we had a mass team fixture with all year groups involved. It was fantastic to see so many students taking part and exhibiting our school values so well showing compassion, resilience and trust for the others within their teams. Unfortunately, we were not able to produce a win on this occasion, but I am very pleased by everyone’s commitment and passion for the game. Star players: Riley Blythe, Daisy Hardy, Katie Suchomska and Rosaya Phattanavibul.
