Are You Tired of…..
… no changes in your life?
… unfulfilled New Year’s resolutions?
-- the same stuff, the same job, the same
surroundings, the same classes, etc?

What Is Perseverance All about?
“A determined attitude that makes you continue
trying to achieve something difficult.”
Macmillan English Dictionary Online
“Continued effort to do or achieve something
despite difficulties, failure, or opposition: the
action or condition or an instance
of persevering: steadfastness.”
Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Now, let’s see perseverance for ELT.
Talk The Talk about Perseverance:
• I’m planning to…
• I’m going to…
• I always / often / sometimes work on / do…
• This is a priority for me.
• Help me (to) finish / stick to / complete…
• I’ve been working on…
• I’ve done this for (periods of time).
• It’s been easy / interesting / difficult / troublesome to keep up with…
• “No pain, no gain.”
• I’m driven / determined / hellbent to accomplish…
• Achieving this comes at a cost that I’m willing to pay (because)…
• I see no end in sight, yet I’ll persist!

Walk The Walk towards Perseverance…
Along with children:
• Use the stages of projects scheduled in your school year
as an opportunity to practice expressions for perseverance.
• Spend a few minutes every class to take care of a plant or
fish in the classroom while using the language for
perseverance.
Teens can also walk this way by…

Along with teens:
• In teams, let them discuss daily life situations demanding
perseverance, such as sports, music (playing an
instrument, singing, making a band), relationships, building
skills for hobbies, interests, etc.
• Help them start, keep, and upgrade an ELT blog / wiki /
social media group on topics compelling to them.
• Advance an initiative relevant to school / community that
may meet a degree of indifference or opposition as you
press forward.
Adults and professionals can go along!

Along with young adults & adults or professionals:
• Use needs analysis to match students’ strengths and
weaknesses; make them team up in ways that supplement
their skills; and trust them with peer coaching during the term.
• Periodically have ‘Boot Camp’ days to target key areas or
skills to improve with intensive practice.
A few tricks of the trade to make it happen, next!
Walk The Walk towards Perseverance…
