ValveDiagnostics

The reliable operation of control valves, shutoff valves and emergency valves has direct impact on efficiency, safety and availability of turbomachinery. To evaluate the condition and performance, main- tenance teams need advanced diagnostic features and maintenance routines.

Growing economic pressure leads to constantly growing requirements on operation and maintenance on turboma-chinery. The challenge for maintenance teams is to continuously assess the condition of the equipment during operation to predict maintenance requirements at an early stage and plan resulting maintenance activities.

Although proper function of control valves, shutoff valves and emergency valves has direct impact on the efficiency, safety and availability of compressors and turbines, the eva- luation of the condition and perfor- mance of these valves is often neg- lected as they are not part of the core machine. To help maintenance teams monitoring the valve condition, MAN PrimeServ provides a range of solutions for online and offline actuator diagnostics and maintenance. Monitoring of Actuating Times The full stroke actuating time of an actuator during a shutdown event is an important indicator for valve perfor- mance. The comparison of actual times and admissible times allows early identi-fication of deviations. MAN PrimeServ has developed a feature for the auto- matic measuring and recording of full stroke actuating times as well for on-off as for control valves Monitoring of Valve Signals Monitoring valve signals with dedicated algorithms allows recognizing devel-oping failures at an early stage. This can be done as simple as comparing set point and actual position. Advanced models based on physical relations link

input signals to controlled values. Fur- ther diagnostic possibilities can be added by also monitoring the cylinder pressure fingerprint. Partial Stroke Test For valves constantly operated in acertain end position, the actuating timeduring a partial stroke test can be usedas an additional performance indicator. The monitoring of the partial stroketravel times can be applied to emer-gency valves, e. g. trip valves and anti-surge valves. The monitoring can be applied even to critical applications without affecting operation. Solenoid Valve Test Redundant solenoid valves actuating valves can be monitored and checked during operation. By carrying out peri- odic online tests the proper function is verified. Developing failures can be detected early to apply an adequate maintenance strategy. New Maintenance Modes MAN PrimeServ has developed new

maintenance modes for various valvesto improve valve maintenance duringstandstill. By applying these modes, stroking and checking of valves ispossible within short time and withoutadditional equipment. Therefore, thefeature and diagnostic set are speciallyadapted to the specific valve andapplication. Actuator Testing To support smooth re-commissioning ofsteam turbines and thus to reduce totaldowntime, the steam turbine controlvalve and trip actuators should betested prior to their re-installation ontothe machine. Therefore, MAN PrimeServcan temporarily provide a mobile hy-draulic test unit to perform the testingindependently from a functional oilsystem. Management Summary Features:- Automatic monitoring of full stroke   actuating times- Partial stroke tests during operation- New maintenance modes for standstill

maintenance- Mobile hydraulic test unit for testing Benefits:- Online monitoring of actuator per-   formance and condition- Automatic test sequences- Off- and online maintenance assis-    tance features - Increased availability and reliability by   support of condition-based main-   tenance Comprehensive Modernization MAN PrimeServ provides compre- hensive modernization concepts to upgradeyour equipment - no matter if you want to optimize reliability, operating costs, environmental sustainability or anything else.
