ElEctronic ActuAtors With Factory Premounted Valve Safety Tested and Rated to Conform to ETL, CSA, and CE Specifications

All of our valves listed on pages 101 – 102 are available premounted on compact Electronic Actuators to automate valve positioning. Our valves are coupled with a DC gear motor which offers outstanding rotational accuracy and low actuation times.

Upchurch Scientific actuated valves can be conveniently operated by keypad or computer controlled through contact closure and RS-232 communication. LED indicators on the actuator keypad specify valve position. Additionally, valves may be multiplexed (daisy-chained) for custom automation solutions when using RS-232 communication.

Each actuator is provided with an inline power adapter which allows operation from both 110/120V (North American) and 220/240V (European) AC power. All actuators come with a one-year parts and labor warranty.

Introduction to Upchurch Scientific® Valves

VAlVEs introduction

Medium Pressure Valves Injection and Selection Valves for Pressures to 1,000 psi (69 bar)

Switching and Shut-Off Valves for Pressures to 500 psi (34 bar)

Directly Connect 1/16” or 1/8” OD Tubing with Flangeless Fittings (included)

Manual and Actuated VersionsUpchurch Scientific® Medium Pressure Valves are available for 1/16” or 1/8” OD tubing in sample injection or six-way flow selection versions. These valves have completely biocompatible flow paths and are perfect for systems where the pressure does not exceed 500–1,000 psi (34–69 bar), including flow injection analysis (FIA) and some chromatography applications. These valves come in manual (with or without a bulkhead mounting option) and electronically actuated versions. For more details on these valves, please see pages 100 – 101.

The Medium Pressure Valve series also includes our Switching Valves (rated to 500 psi, 34 bar) which offer several options for directional flow control. The most popular is the “L” style — a two-way switching valve that could be used for mobile phase, column or detector selection between two inlets or outlets. Use the “T” style valve with a plug to change a three-way open connection to a two-way selection valve. The “D” style valve is a two position four-way switching valve where adjacent ports are connected by a flow path which rotates 90˚ to change position. Applications for this valve include protection of column or other sensitive instrument components during a cleaning cycle. These biocompatible four-port switching valves are available for manual control or mounted onto an electronic actuator. Polymer inline shut-off valves are also available for 1/8” or 1/16” OD tubing to quickly turn a flow stream “on” or “off.” For more information on medium-pressure Switching and Shut-Off valves, please see pages 102 – 103.

Fine Control of Flow in Two-way or Three-way Valves Applicable to a Wide Range of Applications, including Interfacing LC/MS Systems

Ability to Adjust and Change Split Flow Ratio Versions for Capillary up to 1/8” OD Tubing

Upchurch Scientific Needle Valves control flow of either the output of a two-port valve (Micro-Metering) or on the split stream of a three-port valve (Micro-Splitter Valves). Use one of these valves to regulate gas flow in a helium sparging system or to split post-column flow to a mass spectrometer. Several versions are available for connecting different tubing sizes, and biocompatible equivalents of each are offered. For more information on the different valve styles and functions, please see pages 104 – 105.

Use our 6-Way Medium Pressure Selection Valve to easily select different solvents with an isocratic pump. The setup below involves an isocratic pump used for two separate assays, each requiring a prerinsing step prior to use. Using our Selection Valve in this setup, the system can be primed with the solvent in the first reservoir. Then, solvent from the second reservoir can be used as the mobile phase for the first application. Later, the system can be rinsed with an intermediate buffer solution from the third reservoir, followed by switching over to the second mobile phase in reservoir number 4. At the end of the day, the system can be rinsed with water from a fifth reservoir to avoid the possibility of precipitation on wetted surfaces. Follow this rinse with a final rinse of methanol from the sixth reservoir for system storage.

Biocompatible and Inert Low Swept Volume Minimal Dispersion

Upchurch Scientific® 6-Port Medium Pressure Injection Valves feature easy, external sample loop customization. Simply clean-cut a piece of tubing that represents the volume of sample you wish to inject, taking into account the port-to-port volume of the valve. Please refer to the “Tubing Internal Diameters and Volumes” chart on page 73 for assistance in calculating the volume of a length of tubing.

Two biocompatible injection valve options are available:

Long-Life CeramicFeaturing ceramic-to-ceramic sealing surfaces, these new long-life valves have been tested to over one million actuations with no change in performance.* The wetted materials are chemically resistant ceramic and PEEK™ polymer and the valves are rated to 500 psi (34 bar). Each valve includes 1/4-28 Flangeless Fittings for 1/16” OD tubing.

Economical PolymerThese economical valves have chemically resistant Vespel® and DuPont Teflon® brand resin wetted surfaces and are rated for a maximum pressure of 1,000 psi (69 bar). Each valve includes 1/4-28 Flangeless Fittings for 1/16” or 1/8” OD tubing.

Both valve options are available in three configurations: standard manual, bulkhead mountable manual and actuated. A valve mounting bracket (M-615-2) is listed on page 102, and bulkhead mounting specifications are available at www.upchurch.com/pdf/I-cards/V2.pdf. Refer to page 99 for information regarding the DC Gear motor actuators.

Please contact Upchurch Scientific for stepper motor actuated options, as well as custom configurations for instrument manufacturers. High pressure injection valve options are available starting on page 78.

* Tested using room-temperature water as the solvent.

MEdiuM PrEssurE injEction Port AdAPtErOur simple, biocompatible adapter converts any 1/4-28 flat-bottom port into a port that can accept a standard 22 gauge HPLC injection needle. This injection port adapter is adjustable, so you can create a snug fit around the needle to prevent any leaking of the analyte. In addition, this product features an internal stop that prevents you from inserting the needle too far, eliminating the possibility of damaging the valve with the needle tip.

Three Flow Configurations to Choose From Biocompatible Flow Paths

With three versions to choose from, Upchurch Scientific® Switching Valves offer many flow distribution options. Each valve has a low swept volume, can withstand pressures to 500 psi (34 bar) and is chemically inert and biocompatible. The PEEK™ and DuPont Teflon® brand resin construction results in a valve as durable as it is economical. Each V-100 Series Switching Valve has .040” thru-holes and is supplied with Flangeless Fittings for use with 1/16” OD tubing. To use these valves with 1/8” OD tubing, simply replace the supplied fittings with 1/4-28 Flangeless Fittings found on page 57. You may notice a slight back pressure at higher flow rates, due to the .040” thru-holes in these valves.

To operate, all ports must be either connected to a line of your system or plugged. Built-in positioning detents allow these valves to snap into place, ensuring the thru-hole is properly aligned.

Standard manual valves (V-100D, V-100L and V100T) measure 1.80” (45.7 mm) in length. Bulkhead versions (V-101D, V-101L and V-101T) are 2.18” (55.4 mm) long.

Each of the Upchurch Scientific 4-Port Switching Valves is available in standard manual and bulkhead mountable manual configurations. Bulkhead mounting specifications are included and are also available at www.upchurch.com/PDF/I-cards/v17.pdf. The bulkhead mountable manual configuration can also be mounted on our M-615-1 Valve Bracket (see below). DC gear motor actuated versions are also available — please see page 101 for actuator information.

Selected applications for our Medium Pressure Switching Valves are listed on the following page. However, there are also several other possible uses for these valves. Please contact your local authorized Distributor or Upchurch Scientific directly to discuss your particular application.

Please contact Upchurch Scientific for stepper motor actuated options, as well as custom configurations for instrument manufacturers. High pressure switching valve options are available starting on page 78.

Micro-Splitter Valve Applications & NotesBACk PrESSurE CoNSidErAtioNS

Our Micro-Splitter Valves are designed to work when both effluent flow path pressures are nearly identical. However, the split flow path will often have higher back pressure than the waste flow path, making it hard to achieve any split flow at all. There are two possible solutions. Place a back pressure regulator (see pages 108 – 110) on the waste flow path that is equal to or slightly greater than the pressure on the split flow path. Or, switch the two effluent pathways such that the split flow pathway is attached to the “waste” port on the valve and the waste flow pathway is attached to the “split” port on the valve. This second method may result in a loss of adjustment sensitivity.

PriME/PurgE VALVE

Air within the pump head can cause noisy pump operation and flow instability. Solve this problem by placing a High Pressure Micro-Splitter Valve or High Pressure Universal Prime/Purge Valve (page 106) inline between the pump and the injector valve. You can then safely divert pump flow to a waste container at a sufficient rate to dislodge the air. Remove air from the solvent line leading to the pump with a Low Pressure Prime/Purge Valve (page 106).

MuLti-CoLuMN ANd dEtECtor SyStEMS

Does your work require analyses with multiple columns and detectors that use the same mobile phase? If so, install one of our High Pressure Micro-Splitter Valves after your injector. A single injection can then be split to two separate columns and detector systems, at two different flow rates. This economical set-up eliminates the need for an additional pump and injector valve, while allowing data to be obtained simultaneously.

PoSt-dEtECtor iNtErfACiNg

Use a Medium Pressure Micro-Splitter Valve to route fluid exiting an initial detector to other devices, such as a mass spectrometer and a fraction collector. The valve will split and reduce the flow rate to that required for MS interfacing, while diverting the remainder of the flow to the collector (a back pressure regulator may also be required for this set up, available on pages 108 – 110).

othEr APPLiCAtioNS

See a flow diagram on page 37 of sample purification and concentration that includes use of a Micro-Splitter Valve. These valves are also suited for other applications, such as adapting a standard HPLC system to handle microbore analyses. Micro-sPlittEr VAlVEs For Interfacing LC-MS Systems Adjustable Split Stream Flow Rates Medium and High Pressure Versions

Upchurch Scientific® offers a line of Micro-Splitter Needle Valves designed to accurately split and control a low-flow stream off a single incoming supply.

The biocompatible Medium Pressure Micro-Splitter Valves are perfect for LC-MS and other multidetector systems and fraction collectors. The ideal placement of these valves is on the effluent side of the detector flow cell, at a maximum pressure of 800 psi (55 bar). Choose between 1/4-28 and 10-32 threaded versions. A valve is also available to accommodate applications involving capillary tubing.1

The High Pressure Micro-Splitter Valves are designed to operate under pressures up to 4,000 psi (276 bar). These products are well suited for running two analytical devices in parallel. The High Pressure Capillary Micro-Splitter Valves1 may also be used to adapt an analytical HPLC system to handle microbore applications.

Our Graduated Valves offer many of the benefits and features of our original Micro-Splitter Valves, plus the ability to adjust and set the split flow to repeatable settings. This allows documentation of settings and the resulting flow rates for easier method development. The graduations also make it easier to employ the valve in a system used to run multiple analyses that require different split flow rates. Choose from regular High Pressure and Capillary1 versions.

All Micro-Splitter Valves have been tested at flow rates to 100mL/min., with a maximum resulting pressure drop of only 45 psi (3.1 bar).2

1 This valve has a MicroTight® 6-32 threaded fitting on the split stream. Select the appropriately sized MicroTight Tubing Sleeve from page 28 to connect your capillary tubing.

2 Preasure drop measured when valves fully opened.

1 The supply and waste port thru-holes have IDs of .020”. The ID for the split-stream port thru-hole is .020” in standard versions; in capillary versions it is .010”.

2 All tests conducted at an incoming flow rate of 1 mL/min. using room temperature water, with equal pressures on both effluent streams. Lower incoming flow rates will result in a gradual loss of sensitivity when setting the split rate.

Micro-Metering ValvesMicro-Splitter Valves

Micro-MEtEring VAlVEs Flow Rates as Low as 3.5µL/min*

1/4-28 and 10-32 Designs Available PEEK™ Polymer Construction, with DuPont Teflon®

Brand Resin SealsFor fine control of fluid flow rates, our Micro-Metering Needle Valves can reduce outgoing flow to as low as 3.5µL/min*. These needle valves are perfect for use with peristaltic pump fluid-transfer applications, mass spectrometry, and fraction collection.

Upchurch Scientific® Micro-Metering Valves can also be used to regulate gas flow in helium sparging lines and as a flow-dependent variable back pressure regulator. For flow independent regulation of back pressure, please see pages 108 – 110. Please request our Flow Control Valve Applications Guide for more details.

Flow path materials are PEEK polymer and Teflon (O-rings). All versions of this valve have .020” thru-holes.

Upchurch Scientific Universal Prime/Purge Valves are easy to operate. Simply install a valve along the flow path with the included fittings and attach a luer-tipped syringe. Then, withdraw the plunger and watch as solvent and residual bubbles are removed from the solvent line. The valves automatically close when the syringe is removed.

The low pressure version of the valve is designed to be used with 1/8” OD tubing, while the high pressure version accommodates 1/16” OD tubing. Optional mounting is made easy by the handy holes in the body of each unit.

Air in the inlet Solvent LineInstall the Low Pressure Universal Prime/Purge Valve along the inlet solvent path near the pump to remove bubbles from the inlet solvent line. The valve can also be used to rapidly “wet” your solvent inlet filter. When a new filter is installed, it often contains a substantial amount of air within its pores. At standard flow rates, it may require several minutes before the inlet fluid pathway is completely free of gas. Using this valve you are able to rapidly draw solvent through the inlet filter, dislodging the gas and minimizing downtime.

Air in the PumpheadAir within the pumphead can cause flow instability and noisy pump operation. Place the High Pressure Prime/Purge Valve between the pump and the sample injector, where it can be used to remove bubbles that have become lodged within your pump. This valve is rated for a maximum pressure of 5,000 psi (345 bar).
