1. Foreword by Alain van der Horst‘Hoping for better times mustn’t be a feeling but a doing something in the present’, wrote Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo on 22 July 1883.

Inspired by this fitting quote, I am delighted to present the Van Gogh Europe Annual Report 2020 as the new Chair of the organisation. I am both suitably proud, and grateful. Proud because, despite the undeniable fact that the worldwide pandemic has also impacted our network, we have still been able to make significant progress that stands us in good stead for the future. And grateful, because during the lengthy closures of our locations and museums, the number of fans and followers of Van Gogh Europe has grown substantially. The past year was thankfully not purely dominated by the coronavirus crisis, although it was behind the Board’s decision to waive the annual contributions. Many activities were cancelled, but the partners and the Board stayed in touch and offered mutual support through a ‘chain email’ and online meetings. In concrete terms, a new diversified contribution system has been implemented, the Van Gogh Europe Foundation’s articles of association have been reviewed and adjusted (under Dutch law), we have decided to continue the successful educational collaboration with the ISC Business School, and we have warmly welcomed Musée d’Orsay as a new partner. In the academic field, I would like to mention two remarkable events that dramatically boosted the impact and awareness of our network with the public at large. At the end of July, following a discovery by Wouter van der Veen (Scientific Director of the Institut Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise), the exact location where Van Gogh painted Tree Roots was revealed. In attendance at the special unveiling were a large number of dignitaries, an enormous delegation of international media, Van Gogh Museum Director Emilie Gordenker and Willem van Gogh, the great-grandson of Vincent’s brother Theo. In September, Van Gogh Europe partner the Drents Museum in Assen collaborated with the Drents Archief and Het Drentse Landschap to present the publication Van Gogh Erfgoedlocaties in Drenthe (Van Gogh Heritage Locations in Drenthe), marking a significant step towards bringing the relatively little-known story of Van Gogh’s stay in the Dutch province of Drenthe into the spotlights. I would like to express my deep gratitude to all partners in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and the Netherlands for their commitment to the universal life story and cherished work of Vincent van Gogh. I am pleased to say that, thanks to their work, hope of better times in 2021 – despite the challenging circumstances – is very well grounded indeed.

The Van Gogh Brabant representative is Frank van de Eijnden (Director of Van Gogh Brabant, Director of the Van Gogh Heritage Sites Foundation and Operational Director of the Van Gogh National Park). Van Gogh Brabant is one of the three founding members of the Van Gogh Europe Foundation.

2. Het Noordbrabants Museum

Het Noordbrabants Museum in ’s Hertogenbosch has several original Van Gogh paintings in its collection. The museum is part of the Van Gogh Brabant network.

The representative from Het Noordbrabants Museum is Head of Marketing and Communication, Stella Nulens.

3. Kröller-Müller Museum

The Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo is home to the world’s second largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh, with almost 90 paintings and more than 180 drawings.

Elisabeth Boelrijk (Head of Marketing & Business Development) represents the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Van Gogh Europe network. The Kröller-Müller Museum is one of the founding members of the Van Gogh Europe Foundation, together with the Van Gogh Museum and Van Gogh Brabant. Elisabeth Boelrijk joined the Board as Treasurer in 2012.

4. Drents Museum

In 2018, the Drents Museum (in Assen) joined our collective. The museum’s collection includes Van Gogh’s paintings The Peat Barge (1883) and Peasant Burning Weeds (1883), the latter of which was acquired jointly with the Van Gogh Museum in November 2019.

Ellen ter Hofstede (Head of Public Affairs and Partners) represents the Drents Museum within Van Gogh Europe.

5. Van Gogh Huis Drenthe and Veenpark

The house in which Van Gogh lived during his stay in Drenthe (autumn 1883) is located in Nieuw-Amsterdam. The nearby Barger-Compascuum is home to the Veenpark, which explores the world of peat – a subject to which Van Gogh often returned.

Harrie Keuter (Director of the Veenpark) represents both parties in Van Gogh Europe.

6. Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam

Home to the world’s largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh (paintings, drawings and letters), the Van Gogh Museum is a major partner in the network. The Van Gogh Museum is one of the three founding partners of Van Gogh Europe.

Milou Halbesma (Director of Public Affairs) was appointed as the new Chair of the Van Gogh Europe Board in 2019 but left the Van Gogh Museum in January. She was succeeded as Chair by Alain van der Horst, Head of Corporate Communication & PR.

Since February 2019, Sarah Dekker (Project Manager, Van Gogh Museum) has supported the network as a Project Manager for Van Gogh Europe.

BELGIUM

Van Gogh Europe has two partners in Belgium: one promotional partner and one content partner.

7. Mons Region Tourist Office and Maison Van Gogh de Colfontaine

Mons Region Tourist Office promotes Mons and the surrounding area. A significant focus of their activities is the story of Vincent van Gogh in the Borinage. Maison Van Gogh de Colfontaine is one of the two houses where Van Gogh lived during his stay in the Borinage.

Director of the Tourist Office, Natacha Vandenberghe, is a member of the Van Gogh Europe Board.

8. Maison Van Gogh de Cuesmes and Maison Van Gogh de Colfontaine

Van Gogh lived in two houses during his stay in the Borinage (1878-1880). Both houses welcome visitors. Caroline Dumoulin (Scientific Consultant) and Xavier Roland (Director of BAM - Beaux-Arts-Mons) represent one of those houses, Maison Van Gogh de Cuesmes, within Van Gogh Europe.

FRANCE

Three of our partners can be found in France.

9. Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles

Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles uses contemporary and modern art to offer a fresh perspective on the oeuvre of Vincent van Gogh. The Fondation always displays a Van Gogh work in their exhibition. Anne-Sophie Foron (Head of Visitors Department & Communications) represents the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles in the Van Gogh Europe network. Anne-Sophie became a member of the Board in 2019.

10. Tourist Office, Saint-Rémy

The Tourist Office in Saint-Rémy is our promotional partner, representing the period in which Van Gogh was admitted to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole psychiatric hospital (1889-1890). Saint-Rémy is also home to Musée Estrine and Musée des Alpilles; both museums offer visitors information on Van Gogh’s stay in the town.

Philippe Goninet (President of the Tourist Office) is a member of the Board and is focused on the tourism industry. Martine Lagrange, consultant, is focused on culture and education in Saint-Rémy.

11. Institut Van Gogh, Auvers-sur-Oise

The institute is located in the Auberge Ravoux, where Van Gogh spent the last phase of his life and where he eventually died. The graves of Vincent and his brother Theo van Gogh are not far from the auberge. Director Dominique Janssens represents Institut Van Gogh in the network.

THE UNITED KINGDOM

Our final partner is located in the United Kingdom.

12. Van Gogh House London

From 1873 to 1874, Van Gogh lived on Hackford Road in London. Following extensive renovations, the house reopened in March 2019 and now offers artist residencies.

Alice Childs and her daughter Livia Wang (Creative Director), owners of the Van Gogh House, became members of Van Gogh Europe in May 2018. Livia became a member of the Board in April 2019.

Board meetingsThis year, the Board once again convened on two occasions, albeit online. During these online meetings, Chair Alain van der Horst took the opportunity to become acquainted with all members of the Board. Significant decisions were taken regarding the articles of association, the contributions and attracting new partners. These subjects will be addressed in more detail later in this report. The Board also held extensive discussions regarding the plans for Van Gogh Europe to organise a joint educational project in 2023. The Van Gogh Museum celebrates its 50th jubilee in 2023, and it is also a notable year for the other partners: the Drents Museum is organising a special exhibition focusing on Vincent van Gogh’s period in the province, and it will then be 150 years since Van Gogh arrived in the English capital, good reason for the Van Gogh House London to pull out all the stops.

ContactDuring the lockdowns, the partners used a so-called ‘chain email’ to keep each other updated. Each partner took turns to update the rest on the local and national situation, and to introduce the creative solutions that they had developed to ensure that the close links with the public and their staff were preserved. The partners also shared photographs and articles. The Van Gogh House London organised highly successful online guided tours, the Chair of the Vincentre in Nuenen spoke with his volunteers on a weekly basis, the Van Gogh Museum hosted a special livestreamed performance by Japanese pianist, artist and director Tomoko Mukaiyama, and our partner in Mons used the time to comprehensively research the history of the Van Gogh house in the Borinage. In addition to our digital Board and partner meetings throughout the year, the ‘chain email’ offered an enjoyable and positive means of staying in touch.

8

ContributionsIn light of the unprecedented conditions of 2020, the Board felt compelled to accommodate the partners by waiving the annual contributions. This was not solely to offer the partners financial relief, but also because the network was unable to offer its customary services.

The Board tasked the Treasurer and Project Manager with reviewing the contribution system: an assignment originally outlined in the 2018 advisory report, which followed on-location interviews with all partners. Switching to a pro rata system and adding a new category has enabled us to create a more robust and productive model. The explanation and regulations associated with this model were recorded in a memo and approved during the Board meeting.

In the new system, a distinction is drawn between main and associated partners. Main partners offer a pro rata contribution: large museums such as the Van Gogh Museum, the Kröller-Müller Museum and Musée d’Orsay contribute € 5,000 a year. Smaller main partners (such as the Van Gogh House London and the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles) contribute € 2,500 a year. Main partners attend meetings, are involved with the decision-making process and can also hold positions on the Board. They are mentioned on the website, in the brochure and on social media. Main partners can be categorised as museums, heritage locations and promotional partners.

Associated partners are either smaller organisations, or partners with a less explicit link with Van Gogh. These partners contribute € 1,000 a year. They do not participate in meetings, but are invited to the biannual networking reception, and are permitted to use all Van Gogh Europe content and images. Associated partners are not permitted to hold positions on the Board, but the organisations are mentioned on our website, on social media and in the brochure.

The new system makes the network more accessible, and easier for potential partners to join Van Gogh Europe, even if limited financial resources are available. It also means that the number of participants at meetings remains limited, allowing us to safeguard the efficiency and productivity of the meetings and the network in general.

Articles of association and the Chamber of Commerce

In light of Milou Halbesma succeeding Frank van den Eijnden in 2019, followed by Alain van der Horst in 2020, and Anne-Sophie Foron and Livia Wang becoming members of the Board, it was necessary to update the Chamber of Commerce registration and review the articles of association (as decided at the annual meeting held in London in April 2019, following the relaunch of Van Gogh Europe).

The Van Gogh Europe Foundation was officially incorporated under Dutch law on 4 January 2013. In light of the new mission, objective and strategy, and in view of the changes to the composition of the Board, comprehensive amendments to the articles of association were required. The articles of association, as incorporated in the memorandum of association, no longer complied with the current requirements imposed on foundations with ANBI status (Public Benefit Organisations), nor were they in line with the new strategy that is to be implemented by Van Gogh Europe.

The amendments to the articles of association were discussed and decided upon during the Board meeting in September 2020. The revised version of the Van Gogh Europe Foundation articles of association will be found in appendix I.

Van Gogh Europe activities

Discovery of the location where Van Gogh painted his final masterpiece, Tree RootsOn 28 July 2020, an event was organised in Auvers-sur-Oise to reveal the location where – 130 years previous and shortly before his suicide – Vincent van Gogh painted his final masterpiece, Tree Roots. In attendance were Emilie Gordenker, the Director of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and Willem van Gogh, the great-grandson of Vincent’s brother Theo.

The discovery of the exact location where Vincent van Gogh painted Tree Roots was made by Wouter van der Veen, Scientific Director of Institut Van Gogh (Auvers-sur-Oise) – a member of Van Gogh Europe. Van der Veen found a postcard from 1900-1910 featuring a scene including tree trunks and roots growing on a hillside. He has described and documented his discovery in a book, Attacked at the Roots, written specially for the occasion. Tree Roots is part of the Van Gogh Museum’s collection.

A moving experience

Once the Covid-19 lockdown in France was lifted in May 2020, and several months after the initial discovery, Wouter van der Veen was able to travel to the site to verify his theory. The site is 150 metres from the Auberge Ravoux, the inn in Auvers-sur-Oise where Van Gogh stayed for the last 70 days of his life. Spectacularly, the biggest tree trunk from the painter’s last motif is still present and recognisable.

10

The Institut van Gogh, in co-operation with the local authorities, has erected a protective wooden structure to safeguard the site and allow for visits by the public.

Those who visit Auvers to follow in Van Gogh’s footsteps can now add another moving experience to their journey: they can stand at the exact place where Van Gogh’s paintbrush last touched the canvas.

The unveiling of this special and significant Van Gogh heritage location, and the highly successful press event, was the result of a collaboration between two Van Gogh Europe partners: the Van Gogh Museum and the Institut Van Gogh in Auvers. There was widespread coverage of the unveiling in international media, in newspapers, on television and online. Coverage included items in the New York Times and The Guardian, on the NOS news programme, on ABC News and in a special edition of Nieuwsuur. The items all recognised the vital importance of the Van Gogh Europe network and the necessity of uniting the range of European Van Gogh heritage locations and collections in the foundation.

Presentation of research by the Drents Museum, Drents Archief and Het Drentse LandschapOn 11 September 2020, Van Gogh Europe partner the Drents Museum collaborated with the Drents Archief and Het Drentse Landschap to present the publication Van Gogh Erfgoedlocaties in Drenthe (Van Gogh Heritage Locations in Drenthe). On this day 137 years previous, Vincent van Gogh arrived by train from The Hague at the station in Hoogeveen. In autumn 1883, the artist spent three months in Drenthe. The publication is the result of 18 months of academic research jointly conducted by experts from the three organisations into the tracks left by Van Gogh during his time in the province. One of these locations – the orchard with the linden tree in Zweeloo – provided the backdrop for the presentation, which was attended by many of the Van Gogh Europe partners.

This is the first time that such comprehensive research had been conducted into the small Drenthe oeuvre of five paintings, some 15 drawings and a series of letters. The project also involved field research, consultations with experts on location and reviews of existing publications.

The research and publication resulted in the identification of 15 locations in Drenthe, representing a significant step towards introducing the relatively little-known story of Vincent van Gogh’s stay in the province to the public at large. This is an important development for the Van Gogh Museum network, which is dedicated to charting every location and aspect of Van Gogh’s route through Europe. The research adds another layer to the story of Van Gogh’s life and work, contributing to Van Gogh Europe’s mission of making Van Gogh’s cultural heritage accessible to a wide audience and of inspiring, uniting and appealing to current and future generations.

Van Gogh WorldwideThe RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the Van Gogh Museum and the Kröller-Müller Museum are the three founding partners of Van Gogh Worldwide. They each possess detailed information on Van Gogh’s work, and they have pooled their expertise to make data available in digital form. The platform has been constructed in collaboration with a large number of partners including museums, private individuals and research institutions, especially the Cultural Heritage Laboratory of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.

The digital platform Van Gogh Worldwide is a unique, innovative platform publishing information to a high academic standard, and brings together art-historical and technical information about the work of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890).

In the first phase (in 2020), the project focuses on all paintings, drawings and prints by Vincent van Gogh in the Netherlands: over 300 paintings and around 900 works on paper. In the second phase data for works located in foreign collections will also be added to the platform. A total of about 2000 works by Van Gogh are currently known. This first phase has been successfully completed at this moment and the collaboration will start phase two in 2021.

12

Musée d’Orsay, ParisMusée d’Orsay is home to an impressive collection of works by Vincent van Gogh. All 24 Van Gogh paintings in the collection are from the estate of Doctor Gachet, Vincent’s physician and friend during the final months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise. Dr Gachet left the paintings to the museum in his will.

Van Gogh Europe identified Musée d’Orsay as a prospective partner many years ago, both in light of their notable Van Gogh collection and the museum’s significant position in France and Europe as a whole. After the right preparations of former Chair Milou Halbesma, Chair Alain van der Horst and Project Manager Sarah Dekker travelled in July 2020 to Paris to discuss the possibilities with Guillaume Blanc, Director of Visitor Affairs at Musée d’Orsay. The meeting was a success: the parties agreed that Van Gogh Europe is a valuable network in which Musée d’Orsay should play a significant role. Musée d’Orsay officially joined Van Gogh Europe on 1 January 2021, and Guillaume Blanc will represent the museum in meetings and at events.

Focus on Europe

ISC Business School projectsIn light of the restrictions associated with the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s case study involving International Business & Management Master’s students at the ISC Business School in Paris was held online. In 2020, the project was expanded to include a second case study for students of the digital and data management Marketing Masters. Student numbers were down on recent years due to the coronavirus crisis, but – following several sessions with Sarah Dekker (Project Manager) – 12 students took on the case studies. The first group of students focused on creating a project plan for a two-day Van Gogh Europe congress planned for 2023. Their target audience is young visitors (aged 18 to 35). The congress is being planned to mark the Van Gogh Museum’s jubilee: in 2023, it will be 50 years since the museum opened on Museumplein. Van Gogh Europe is keen to join in the jubilee activities and to organise special activities of its own at other partner locations. The partners will be collaborating to organise this congress. The students were invited to consider the location, the themes, the appropriate visibility of all Van Gogh Europe partners, which speakers could speak about which subjects, and the side programme including workshops, a reception and guided tours. Students were also required to draft a communications and marketing strategy and to create a visual presentation of the project plan. The second group concentrated on the case study question: What would you do if you were Van Gogh Europe’s Social Media Manager? This case study was devised once statistics revealed that numbers of followers on Instagram and Facebook are steadily rising (by approximately 35 and 25 followers per month respectively), but that we are attracting low numbers of young visitors. Only 6% of our followers were in the age category 18-24 years old, and less than 1% of our followers was aged 13 to 17. We asked the students to consider how we may be able to attract a younger audience, and how to create a more active digital community. We also asked them to link with the 2023 congress that the other group were working on: how could social media be used as part of the congress, and to promote the event? We asked the students how they would ensure that people from all around the world would be able to feel a part of the festivities associated with the congress in 2023.

The students were given two months to work on their project, supervised by Professors Sabine Bacouel-Jentjens and Catherine Lejealle. Sarah Dekker regularly attended the online lectures to answer questions and offer advice. On 23 November, the students presented their plan in a digital session attended by several members of the Van Gogh Europe Board. The Board and the professors were impressed by the professional presentations and the high standard of solutions and ideas presented by both teams. The recommendations made by the digital team were directly implemented. As a result, at the time of writing (spring 2021), the percentage of followers aged 13 to 17 rose from 1% to 8.8%, and the percentage of followers aged 18 to 24 rose from 6% to 16.3%. This has also created an improved balance of age categories amongst our followers. With these results Van Gogh Europe is increasing its visibility, reaching new target groups and works on a stronger connection and community online with people from all over the world.

The Van Gogh Europe Board has decided to continue the collaboration with the ISC Business School in 2021.

Social mediaDuring the coronavirus pandemic, Van Gogh Europe and its partners primarily focused on online activities. In the first lockdown, Project Manager Sarah Dekker started more systematically posting images of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and accompanying information, as well as information and images related to all Van Gogh Europe locations. These posts on Instagram and Facebook were made two to three times a week, and the effect was tangible: 1,917 followers at the end of February 2020 grew to more than 3,000 followers exactly a year later. This growth can be partly credited to improved and systematic online visibility, as well as to the valuable recommendations made by the students at the ISC Business School in Paris.
