Our state offers the absolute best destinations for weekend darts and quick getaways. From the San Fernando Valley, Ventura is around an hour away, and even less time if there isn’t traffic. My travel companion and I were off to enjoy the “Putt & Pamper” package offered by the Olivas Links & San Buenaventura golf companies. This pre-planned weekend of fun has greens fees covered at both golf courses, a massage, and accommodations at a local hotel or resort facility. We left early Saturday morning for our tee time at the beautiful Olivas Links golf course. This property is top-notch, and is perfect for those just learning golf and enjoyable for the scratch golfer as well. The weather can get quite crisp by the coast, so be sure to bring a sweater or light jacket. We played all 18 holes, taking pictures and having fun the entire time. The golf course is consistently rated in the “Top 100” in all of America, and just marking it off your “To Play” list is worth the trip. After 18 holes of coastal golf, we were off to our hotel. The Four Points Sheraton is right on the water, a picturesque and delightful location. The resort would be a great place for a wedding, family reunion or other event similar in nature. My travel companion and I checked out the pool, and then wandered off to use the workout facilities. We had a solid workout, and it was off to hit the showers then check out the harbor area. All of the restaurants are within walking distance; just a quick five-minute jaunt and you are there. We chose a great Greek restaurant called “The Greek at the Harbor” where every bite was delicious. The entertainment alone is worth dining there: they have live music and belly dancing, along with audience participation. I love Greek food, and anything on that menu is perfect for dinner, definitely check it out. WOMAN FOUND STABBED TO DEATH IN MOTEL LOS ANGELES, CA -- LAPD homicide detectives are investigating a brutal murder in which a woman was stabbed to death with an unknown sharp object in a motel. Two days ago on Sept. 28 at around 6:45 p.m., 26-year-old Christina Miner of Los Angeles was fatally stabbed in a motel room in the 7500 block of South San Pedro Street. Housekeep- ing staff discovered her body the next day and summoned paramedics who responded and pronounced her dead. The detectives’ investigation has identified the suspect as 32- year-old Los Angeles resident Tabitha Valdes and revealed the motive for the killing to be a personal dispute. After stabbing Miner, Valdes left the motel on foot. She is now in custody and charged with murder, and her bail has been set at $1 million. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Detectives Lyman Doster or Dean Vinluan at 213-485-1383. During non-business hours or on weekends, calls should be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (1-877-527-3247). Anyone wishing to remain anony- mous should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (1-800-222-8477). Tipsters may also contact Crime Stoppers by texting to phone number 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone. All text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD.” Tipsters may also go to LAPDOnline.org, click on “webtips” and follow the prompts. After dinner we strolled along the boardwalk, laughing and skipping merrily to the arcade. There is a plethora of things to do at the harbor in Ventura, from renting a boat, to charter cruises out to the Channel Islands. We explored the shops and as usual ended up at the skee-ball machine. This is a perfect place for a first date, or a thousandth date. Take your significant up there during the day, and you can buy a kite, walk across the street to the beach, and fly her over the ocean. We waited to tee off the next day, because we had to get our massage in, a nice 50-minute rub down by the professionals at Diane Loring, Inc. Definitely something you need to call ahead for, as the team there can get quite booked up, and after your treatment, you will understand why. Since we partook in the “Putt & Pamper” package, following the massage we played San Buenaventura golf course. This is a gem as well, and is considerably shorter than Olivas Links. I highly suggest you take advantage of this wonderful package, for a quick weekend dart out of Los Angeles County, you will not regret it at all. Cheers, and hit it in the short grass. helP ProteCt Grizzly bears! With just 600 grizzly bears remaining in Greater Yellowstone, the federal government is challenging the Greater Yellowstone Coalition’s 2009 court victory that put the bears back on the Endangered Species list. The federal government says the species has rebounded, but enormous threats remain for this national treasure. Since 2008, up to 13% of the entire bear population has been killed or removed each year due to conflicts with humans. And with continued pressure to further develop the West, critical habitat and migra-tion corridors for grizzly bears are at risk. Moreover, reproduction rates of this magnificent animal cannot keep up with these continued stressors. We must demand our government protect the last remaning grizzly bears in Greater Yellowstone. Tell Secretary Salazar to keep grizzly bears listed under the Endangered Species Act until a viable, long-term management plan is in place for this treasured icon.

end hunGer in ameriCa!For 1 in 6 Americans, hunger is a reality. It’s a problem that isn’t confined to certain neighborhoods, certain pockets of society or certain people. The millions of Americans

struggling with hunger include hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply can’t make ends meet. September marks Hunger Action Month, and more than 200 Feeding America food banks across the na-tion are asking people to lend a hand. Dozens of national and local events are planned throughout the month to raise awareness about hunger in America. With Congress considering drastic cuts to federal national pro-grams to help put food on the table for vulnerable children, families and

seniors, Hunger Action Month couldn’t come at a more important time. Stand with Feed-ing America and be a part of Hunger Action Month. Take the pledge today to help end hunger in your community!

saVe Great teaChers!Last year, Mary Mouring won the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award from the Uni-versity of Southern California and the Education Consortium of Central Los Angeles. Mary was committed to the students she taught and saw their test score increase over the year they worked together. And what was her reward for helping her students achieve? A pink slip. Because of short-sighted “Last In, First Out” (LIFO) policies that lay off teach-ers based on seniority, Mary, who was relatively new to her school, was one of the first to be laid off -- despite her students’ success. Unfortunately, Mary’s case isn’t the exception -- most states in the U.S. have similar policies in place. StudentsFirst is launching a na-tional campaign to save these teachers from the upcoming wave of layoffs before the lose their jobs and kids lose their great teachers. Take action today: Pledge to join the fight to save great teachers because effective teachers belong in the classroom.

Coming to the Pantages Theatre are three fabulous Broadway productions.First, the new Broadway musical, “Come Fly Away,” conceived, choreographed, and directed by Tony Award-winner Twyla Tharp and featuring Frank Sinatra vocals, will make its Los Angeles premiere at the Pantages Theatre for a very strict two-week engagement from October 25 to November 6, 2011. “Come Fly Away” follows four couples as they fall in and out of love during one song and dance filled evening at a crowded nightclub. Blending the legendary vocals of Frank Sinatra with a live on-stage big band and 15 of the world’s finest dancers, “Come Fly Away” weaves an unparalleled hit parade of classics, including “Fly Me To The Moon,” “My Way,” and “That’s Life,” into a soaring musical fantasy of romance and seduction. The score of “Come Fly Away” combines classic and newly discovered vocal performances from the Sinatra archives along with signature arrangements by Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Quincy Jones as well as brand new charts for this fresh innovative musical.

Twyla Tharp’s creative relationship with the music of Frank Sinatra began in 1976 with the premiere of “Once More Frank,” a duet created for the American Ballet Theatre, performed by Ms. Tharp and Mikhail Baryshnikov. The collaboration continued with “Nine Sinatra Songs,” Ms. Tharp’s acclaimed piece for 14 dancers which had its world premiere with Twyla Tharp Dance in 1982, and was followed by “Sinatra Suite,” a duet featuring Mr. Baryshnikov and Elaine Kudo, which had its world premiere in 1984 with American Ballet Theatre at the Kennedy Center. Citing it as one of the purest expressions of his body of work, Mr. Sinatra requested that “Sinatra Suite” be performed when he received his Kennedy Center Honors Award.Tickets for “Come Fly Away” may be purchase by phone at 1-800-982-ARTS or in person at the Pantages Box Office (6233 Hollywood Blvd) and all Ticketmaster outlets. Single tickets start at $25. Prices are subject to change without notice.Performance Schedule: Tuesdays through Fridays at 8 pm., Saturdays at 2 pm and 8 pm, and Sunday at 1 pm and 6:30 pm.

Running time is 80 minutes with no intermission. For more information about “Come Fly Away” please visit www.comflyaway.com.The second production I’d like to recommend is “Riverdance,” that celebration of joyful music, song and dance that thrilled me when it was last at the Pantages as well as audiences around the globe. What a blend of dance, music and song that has been drawn on Irish traditions! The international company performs to the music of Bill Whelan. It’s a great theatrical experience for children. “Riverdance” is returning to the Pantages Theatre for one week only beginning November 15, 2011, exactly 15 years to the day when it originally premiered at the landmark Pantages Theatre.Tickets may be purchased online at www.BroadwayLA.org or by phone at (800) 982-2787, purchased in person at the Pantages Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets. Performance schedule: Tuesday-Friday at 8 pm., Saturday at 2 pm and 8 pm and Sunday at 1 pm and 6:30 pm. Running time is two hours including intermission. Children of ages five and up are welcome. Orchestra level tickets start at $25. Please remember that prices are subject to change without notice. The third production that

is returning to the Pantages Theatre is “Wicked,” which opens November 30, 2011 and will run until January 29, 2012.A hit with the public (but not all the critics) “Wicked” is a musical that is based on the Gregory Maguire novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” (1995), a parallel novel of the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” and L. Frank Baum’s classic story “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” (1900). The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz: Elphaba, the misunderstood girl with emerald-green skin, and Galinda, later Glinda, the beautiful, ambitious and popular blonde. “Wicked” tells the story in which these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North and begins before and continues after Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas and includes references to locations, events, characters and situations from both the 1939 film and Baum’s novel.Stephen Schwartz created the music and lyrics, the book by Winnie Holzman and is produced by Universal Pictures in coalition with Marc Platt and David Stone. At the Whitmore the play “Betrayed,” written by George Packer and directed by Andre Verderame, is based on true events, as reported by George Packer in a non-fiction article appearing in The New Yorker in March, 2007. Some of their Iraqi neighbors consider them traitors because they work for the Americans. And, also, their American employers regard them with hostility and contempt. Ultimately the trio find that their lives are in deadly danger, and their pleas to their American bosses are being ignored.“Betrayed,” opens October 13 and runs until November 13, 2011. Performance schedule: Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm. Admission $20. For reservations call (818) 826-3609. The Lyric Theatre is located at 520 N. La Brea Avenue.

supermarket. The program began with residents participating in the annual Los Angeles River Clean-up and continued with weekly activities led by Abode Communities after-school and computer lab staff or guests. Participants made solar ovens from pizza boxes, container gardens from reused household objects and jewelry from old magazines as they

learned about environmental stewardship and how they themselves could impact the environment. The program will culminate in an open house where youth share their experience with other residents through short video presentations and visual displays. Adults will complete surveys before and after the presentation that indicate what they have learned at the

open house. Each household attending the open house will receive green cleaning products and adults will be invited to attend upcoming workshops on sustainable resources designed to help them embrace the information shared by the youth. “At Abode Communities, we believe that by collaborating with our young residents, who in turn will directly share information, activities and enthusiasm with their own families, other adults and peers, we can create sustainable behavioral change at Ivy Terrace,” says Robin Hughes, president of Abode Communities. “These youths will positively impact the community at large, and their involvement in this program will enhance their public speaking, leadership, and teamwork skills and abilities.”The Green Living Youth Program at Ivy Terrace is

By Jean Strauber,Travel EditorLast week I wrote you about my quandary in deciding which Trafalgar European Experience I will take in 2012, a “0” birthday year.In perusing the brochure I found five other European tours of 15 days or long for me to consider. Decisions! Decisions! Decisions!I am considering the 15-Day Trafalgar European Experience holiday. The 15 days also begins, like the European Impressions tour, in Amsterdam. And, from Amsterdam we’ll travel to Cologne to view the Cologne Cathedral, enjoy a cruise down the Rhine River and end our day at the Hotel

Europea Ludwigshafen in Rhineland. We’ll travel from Rhineland to Munich and on to Innsbruck where our hotel will be the Bon Alpina. From Innsbruck to journey to Venice where we’ll spend only one night. We’ll board our comfortable motorcoach and enjoy the view of the Veneto plain and cross the Apennine Mountains into Tuscany. The journey continues through Umbria to Rome to spend the next two nights. Our hotel is the Aran Park. From Rome we journey to Florence (Hotel Demidoff) for one night. Following Florence, our driver will take us past the city of Milan and we’ll

continue north to the Swiss border and follow the scenic St. Gotthard route to Lake Lucerne where we’ll be for the next two nights. From Lucerne we drive on to Paris. This tour includes 11 buffet breakfasts and 6 three-course dinners. Plus One Surprise Hidden Treasure courtesy of our tour director.Leaves frequently from February 23, 2012. Rates from $2685. During the Olympics the fare begins in Amsterdam and the brochure fare is $2350 (land only).Or, the 15-Day Trafalgar European Magic escorted vacation. This tour begins

in Paris where we’ll be lodged for the first two nights. From Paris we head south past the Forest of Fountainbleau to the medieval town of Beaune, the wine capital of the Burgundy region. We’ll then cross into Switzerland and arrive at Geneva, which lies at the end of Lake Leman and our hotel Ramada Encore for the next two nights. We’ll leave Geneva and drive south past Grenoble (remember it was the site of the Winter Olympics a few years ago), through the awesome landscape the leads us to Cote d’Azur from the Alps. We’ll continue on to Nice for the next two nights and our hotel: Busby. While in Nice we’ll visit Cannes and even have time to relax on the beach or enjoy shopping. From Nice we’ll drive through the Principality of Monaco and continue along the coast into Italy, past the port of Genoa to Pisa and end the day in the Tuscan spa town of Montecatini and our hotel: Tuscany Inn. From Montecatini we drive a short distance to Florence where there will be time on our own. We’ll reboard our motorcoach and arrive in Venice for the next two nights. From Venice we then cross the Veneto plain via Bologna, Tuscany, Umbria and into Rome for the next two nights at the Hotel Aran Park where our tour will end.Highlights of this memorable vacation include:- Sightseeing and orientation

WindBy Amy Lowell

He shouts in the sails of the ships at sea,He steals the down from the honeybee,

He makes the forest trees rustle and sing,He twirls my kite till it breaks its string.

Laughing, dancing, sunny wind,Whistling, howling, rainy wind,

North, South, East and West,Each is the wind I like the best.

He calls up the fog and hides the hills,He whirls the wings of the great windmills,

The weathercocks love him and turn to discoverHis whereabouts -- but he’s gone, the rover!

Laughing, dancing, sunny wind,Whistling, howling, rainy wind,

North, South, East and West,Each is the wind I like the best.

The pine trees toss him their cones with glee,The flowers bend low in courtesy,

Each wave flings up a shower of pearls,The flag in front of the school unfurls.

Laughing, dancing, sunny wind,Whistling, howling, rainy wind,

North, South, East and West,Each is the wind I like the best.

In 1982, Joe and Vinnie Fabrocini opened an Italian restaurant in Tarzana, California and named it FABS in honor of the family. The success of the business helped start a trend of popular casual Italian eateries in Los Angeles. Soon afterwards, the family expanded across the city as two brands: FABS and Fabrocini’s. In 1984, Joe Fabrocini found a great location in Sherman Oaks. With some dedicated work and that “magic” the Fabrocinis bring to their loyal customers, it became FABS.

Players can receive an exemption to this invitational by competing in IJGT west coast events and earning merit points.Headquartered on Hilton Head Island, S.C., the IJGT offers over 60 two-and three-day events throughout the U.S. each year. IJGT members represent 45 U.S. states and 43 countries.Additional IJGT alumni include Hunter Mahan and Paula Creamer, as well as several other PGA and LPGA Tour players. The class of 2011 IJGT players are playing at several of the top NCAA Di-vision I schools across the country including University of North Carolina, University of Arkansas, Indiana University, Southern Methodist University and others.

-- Quotes of the Week --Quotations about intelligence:~ “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” -- Albert Einstein~ “Continuous effort -- not strength or intelligence -- is the key to unlocking our potential” -- Winston Churchill~ “If you would take, you must first give, this is the beginning of intelligence.” -- Lao Tzu~ “Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.” -- Calvin & Hobbes~ “Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.” -- Ernest Hemingway~ “We are faced with the paradoxical fact that education has become one of the chief obstacles to intelligence and freedom of thought.” -- Bertrand Russell~ “I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.” -- Socrates~ “Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius.” -- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart~ “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. aNDRE DOB: 02/19/2005 BREED: Male, Labrador blend WEIGHT: 50 lbs. I’m a beautiful mature guy who was here several years ago and I thought I had found my forever home. Unfortunately my owner got sick and couldn’t take care of me any more. They brought me back here and I’ve been here for a couple of months now hoping that my former owner would recover enough to take me home, but alas! that hasn’t happened. So now I’m ready to find a new home for forever. I’m not a puppy so you don’t need to worry that I’m going to chew up your furniture or anything, but I’ve got plenty of energy and would love a home where we could go for walks together and hang out watching TV or whatever in the evenings… Doesn’t that sound perfect?

CaLIDOB: 01/06/2010 BREED: Female, DSH, Tricolor Hey, check me out! With my fancy collar, I’ve gotten myself all dressed for the special day when I get to meet you! I’m a simple girl who loves everyone and needs little more in life than to be pet, fed and kissed!
