UDDEHOLM VANADIS 23

GeneralUddeholm Vanadis 23 is a chromium-molyb-denum-tungsten-vanadium alloyed high speedsteel which is characterized by:• High wear resistance (abrasive profile)• High compressive strength• Very good through-hardening properties• Good toughness• Very good dimensional stability on heattreatment

• Very good temper resistance

For tool making• Machinability• Heat treatment• Grinding• Dimensional stability in heat treatment• Surface treatment

Tool making with highly alloyed tool steelsmeans that machining and heat treatment areoften more of a problem than with the loweralloy grades. This can, of course, raise the costof tool making.

The powder manufacturing route used forUddeholm Vanadis 23 means that its machin-ability is superior to that of similar conven-tionally produced grades and some highlyalloyed cold work tool steels.

The dimensional stability of UddeholmVanadis 23 in heat treatment is excellent andpredictable compared to conventionallyproduced high alloy steels. This, coupled withits high hardness, good toughness and hightemperature tempering, means that UddeholmVanadis 23 is very suitable for surface coating,in particular for PVD.

Critical tool steelpropertiesFor good tool performance• Correct hardness for the application• High wear resistance• High toughness to prevent premature failure

due to chipping/crack formation

High wear resistance is often associated withlow toughness and vice-versa. However, inmany cases both high wear resistance andtoughness are essential for optimal toolingperformance.

Uddeholm Vanadis 23 is a powder metallur-gical tool steel offering an excellent combina-tion of wear resistance and toughness.

ApplicationsUddeholm Vanadis 23 is especially suitable forblanking and forming of thinner work materialswhere a mixed (abrasive–adhesive) or abrasivetype of wear is encountered and where therisk for plastic deformation of the workingsurfaces of the tool is high, e.g.:• Blanking of medium to high carbon steels• Blanking of harder materials such as

hardened or cold-rolled strip steels• Plastics mould tooling subjected to abrasive

wear condition• Plastics processing parts, e.g. feed screws,

barrel liners, nozzles, screw tips, non-returncheck ring valves, pellitizer blades, granulatorknives

Quenching media• Vacuum furnace with high speed gas atsufficient overpressure (2–5 bar)

• Martempering bath or fluidized bed atapprox. 550°C (1020°F)

• Forced air/gas

Note 1: Quenching should be continued untilthe temperature of the tool reaches approx.50°C (120°F). The tool should then be tem-pered immediately.Note 2: For applications where maximumtoughness is required use a martempering bathor a furnace with sufficient overpressure.

TemperingFor cold work applications tempering shouldalways be carried out at 560°C (1040°F)irrespective of the austenitizing temperature.Temper three times for one hour at fulltemperature. The tool should be cooled toroom temperature between the tempers. The retained austenite content will be lessthan 1% after this tempering cycle.

Dimensional changesDimensional changes after hardening andtempering.Heat treatment: Austenitizing between 1050–1130°C (1920–2070°F) and tempering 3 x 1 hat 560°C (1040°F).Specimen size: 80 x 80 x 80 mm (3" x 3" x 3")and 100 x 100 x 25 mm (4" x 4" x 1").Dimensional changes: growth in length, widthand thickness +0,03% – +0,13%.

Sub-zero treatmentPieces requiring maximum dimensional stabilitycan be sub-zero treated as follows:

Immediately after quenching the piece shouldbe sub-zero treated to between -70 to -80°C(-95 and -110°F), soaking time 1–3 hours, followed by tempering.

Sub-zero treatment will give a hardnessincrease of ~1 HRC. Avoid intricate shapes asthere will be risk of cracking.

PVDPhysical vapour deposition, PVD, is a methodof applying a wear-resistant coating at tem-peratures between 200–500°C (390–930°F).As Uddeholm Vanadis 23 is high temperaturetempered at 560°C (1040°F) there is nodanger of dimensional changes during PVDcoating.

CVDChemical vapour deposition, CVD, is used forapplying wear-resistant surface coatings at atemperature of around 1000°C (1830°F).

It is recommended that the tools should beseparately hardened and tempered in a vacuumfurnace after surface treatment.

Uddeholm Vanadis 23

Surface treatmentsSome cold-work tools are given a surface tre-atment in order to reduce friction and increasetool wear resistance. The most commonlyused treatments are nitriding and surface coat-ing with wear resistant layers of titanium car-bide and titanium nitride (CVD, PVD).

Uddeholm Vanadis 23 has been found to beparticularly suitable for titanium carbide andtitanium nitride coatings. The uniform carbidedistribution in Uddeholm Vanadis 23 facilitatesbonding of the coating and reduces the spreadof dimensional changes resulting from harden-ing. This, together with its high strength andtoughness, makes Uddeholm Vanadis 23 anideal substrate for high-wear surface coatings.

MACHINING

HEATTREATMENT

UPHILL CASTING

The Tool Steel ProcessThe starting material for our tool steel is carefully se-lected from high quality recyclable steel. Together withferroalloys and slag formers, the recyclable steel is meltedin an electric arc furnace. The molten steel is then tappedinto a ladle.

The de-slagging unit removes oxygen-rich slag andafter the de-oxidation, alloying and heating of the steelbath are carried out in the ladle furnace. Vacuum degas-sing removes elements such as hydrogen, nitrogen andsulphur.

ESR PLANT

In uphill casting the prepared moulds are filled with acontrolled flow of molten steel from the ladle. From this, the steel can go directly to our rolling mill or to theforging press, but also to our ESR furnace where ourmost sophisticated steel grades are melted once again inan electro slag remelting process. This is done by meltinga consumable electrode immersed in an overheated slagbath. Controlled solidification in the steel bath results inan ingot of high homogeneity, thereby removing macrosegregation. Melting under a protective atmosphere givesan even better steel cleanliness.

HOT WORKING

From the ESR plant, the steel goes to the rolling mill orto our forging press to be formed into round or flat bars.

Similar to our ESR steel, the other high quality steelgrades, including the powder metal steels and sprayformed steels, go to the rolling mill or the forging press.Prior to delivery all of the different bar materials aresubjected to a heat treatment operation, either as softannealing or hardening and tempering. These operationsprovide the steel with the right balance between hard-ness and toughness.

MACHINING

Before the material is finished and put into stock, we alsorough machine the bar profiles to required size and exacttolerances. In the lathe machining of large dimensions, thesteel bar rotates against a stationary cutting tool. Inpeeling of smaller dimensions, the cutting tools revolvearound the bar.

To safeguard our quality and guarantee the integrity ofthe tool steel we perform both surface- and ultrasonicinspections on all bars. We then remove the bar ends andany defects found during the inspection.
