We had been looking at a change in our

offense for quite some time. We had been an

I formation time forever except for the one

year we ran the wishbone. We had looked atboth the Wing T and the Double Wing. With

the tight line splits we were already using we

settled on the Dwing. We fell in love with the

    combination of power football, mis-direction,

and play action passing capability of the DW.

    WHY THE DOUBLE WING?

The most asked question we got was: Coach, why are you changing in mid

season? We were stagnant and for the first time, not doing well offensively.

We had a 2-2 record and went 4-0 after we switched. We went from 16 points a

game to 35 and from 275 yards of offense per game to almost 500 YPG. Our

passing efficiency improved also. Good choice to switch, huh?

The coaching staff of the Giants decided

that this online playbook may hold the

the kids attention a little more than paper.

More than once we have handed out

playbooks and they have been left in thebleachers We feel you can actually pick

up the movement of our plays instead of a

diagram with a bunch of lines, arrows, and

in general chicken scratch all over a piece

    of paper.

    WHY AN AMINATED PLAYBOOK?

We felt with all the time kids spend at the computer nowadays, this was just a

natural extension. The kids are more likely to look at this presentation. We

feel it will also be useful for new assistant coaches coming into our program

that are not familiar with the Double Wing (we are planning on using this

    system a while).

This presentation can be useful on the days we cant practice.

We can set it up in the classroom on a projector and show it to

the group as a whole and answer any questions.

The coaching staff will teach how we want to run our plays and

tips and techniques to help us execute the Double Wing. When

we start practicing and other people see this weird formation

they will think we have lost our minds. We ask you trust us and

you will see it is an exciting offense that is fun to use.

Now, lets start learning about the Double Wing we will use.Other teams may run it differently, but we have found this way to

be successful for our team. What we will discuss is our base

offense and core plays. We will not add anything else until we

    can properly execute this package.

    WHY AN AMINATED PLAYBOOK?

This is our Double Wing formation. We call it Double Tight.

The Coaches will instruct you in more detail in practice on how to line up, but

    here are few pointers:

The linemens feet should be no farther than 6 inches apart and their heads should

be even with the Centers waist. The hand closest to the ball should be down and

the toes of the foot closest to the ball should at the heel depth of the other foot.

Your feet should be about as wide as your shoulder.

    THE DOUBLE WING FORMATION

  • 8/8/2019 Vanceboro Giants Animated DWing Playbook by Jack H. Taylor

    6/170

The two Wingbacks should be right off the hips of the Ends, looking towards

the hips of the Ends. The WBs should almost be able to reach out and touchthe Ends.

The FB is down in a 3 point stance and should almost be able to touch the QB

if he were to reach out with his hand.

Some offenses number the gaps between linemen. The Double Wing numbers

the players for playcalling purposes. For example, if 88 Super Power was called,

the first number tells the Fullback where. to go, the second tells where the ball is

going. In our base offense we just name the play. When we start adding plays

we may use the number system.

A play call for, example, would be Power Right. To run the play the other way

the other way the call would be Power Left. Even though we only have 6 running

plays, there are actually 10 because they are mirrors of each other (we use no

mirror plays for the Wedge or FB Trap). The left or right call tells us what side of

the formation the ball is going to be run.

    BLOCKING TRAINING

The next two slides go over our blocking rules. For the Double Wing, as with

any offense, the offensive line has to know who to block. The coaches willteach linemen how to block, but maybe more importantly, who to block.

    GAP-ON-DOWN (G-O-D) RULE

This is our basic rule for Double Wing blocking. Remember, playside (PS)

means the side of the center the ball is going to be run at. Back side (BS) is the

opposite side from the attack. We will drill and rep this in practice and answer

    question you may have.

The Center and Right Guard perform a double team block on the first player that

playside. The other linemen put their shoulders into the ribs of the player beside

them toward the ball. Everyone keeps their feet moving and tries to carry the wedge

    upfield.

The FB takes the ball behind the wedge and keeps his feet moving looking for

daylight. The WBs help form the wedge and do not push the runner, for that is a

    penalty.

The LE fakes a block down and runs a flag pattern while the QB runs a bootleg action

and pretends he has the ball.

The LT and LG pull through the Centers hips and looks to block the 1st defender that

makes penetration, if there is none, they turn upfield at the RE spot and looks to wall off

    defender pursuit.

The RG,RT,and RE use gap-on-down blocking rules (we will teach these in practice anddiscuss some of the blocking rules later in this presentation.) The WB will wall of the

first Linebacker coming from inside. The LE reaches all the way down to the Center.

The FB does a kick out block on the Defensive end.

The Left WB goes in motion before the snap takes the handoff and makes a cut off the

FBs block, preferably inside. The QB calls for the snap when the WB is in the Guard-

Tackle gap and pivots out, hands to the WB, and runs bootleg action.

All the action by the offensive line, Right WB, FB, and Left WB is the same

on the Super Power as it is on the Power

The big difference on the Super Power is the QB action. The QB spins and

tosses the ball to the WB instead of handing the ball off. Instead of bootleg

action the QB leads the WB through the hole as a lead blocker.

We use this play when the defense starts overplaying the Power and Super

    Power.

The Right Guard and Tackle pull and the Guard kick outs the DE and the Tackle

pulls through and seals to the outside. The RE reaches all the way to the Center.

The Left Guard, Tackle, and End use gap-on-down blocking rules.

The LW goes in motion like the Power and Super Power. The RW drop steps,

takes an inside handoff, and cuts inside the Guards kick out block. The QB

spins and hands the ball off forward. Once the hand off is completed, the QB

    sprints around the Right end.

    CRISS-CROSS LEFT

This play provides a nice little twist when the defense starts overplaying the Power

and Super Power. We run this play a little different than what the books says .

The Right Guard pulls and seals outside. The left End, Tackle, and Guard uses the

gap-on-down rules. After the hand off the QB kicks out the DE. The right Tackle

and Guard reach to the Center.

The LW goes in motion like the Power and takes the hand off from the QB.. The

RW drop steps, takes an inside hand off from the Left WB, and cuts inside the QBs

kick out block. The FB runs Power action and the Left WB continues around the

    right end.

This play provides the FB a chance to run the ball and we call it as a reward for the

FB for providing the key blocks on the DEs.

The Left Guard pulls through the Centers feet and blocks the first man right off the

Center. The LG uses gap-on-down rules. The RT blocks the first Lber inside and the

RE blocks the first Lber away. The LT and LE reach to the Center. The Right WB

walls off the first DB inside.

The LW goes in motion like the Power. The QB spins out hands the ball to the FB and

bootlegs left. The FB waits for the ball from the QB. When the QB is out of the way

the FB runs straight ahead if there is no man on the Center (even front) or veers to the

right if there is a man on the Center (odd front.)

    WEDGE PASS

This is a good play to throw the Defense off stride after they have been pounded by

the Wedge. If the Wedge has been successful (and it usually is) this has been a big

pass play for us. We have no mirror play for this pass yet.

The Offensive Line, as well as the WBs, put their shoulders into the ribs of the player

next to them towards the Center just like the Wedge. The O-Line can only go oneyard up the field as it would be an ineligible receiver downfield.

The QB fakes the hand off to the FB and runs bootleg action (this is why it is

important to carry out the fakes on all our plays) to the left. The LE fakes a down

block and runs a corner pattern. If the Cornerback covers the End , the QB runs. If

the DB comes up to stop the run, the pass goes to the End.

    POWER WINGBACK PASS RIGHT

This is a good play for when the defense comes up to stop the Power

The LG pulls and blocks the DE on this play. The LE and LT reach all the way to the

Center. The RG and RT use the gap-on-down rules. The FB takes 3 steps in the same to the

right as he was going to run the Power and then moves to the block area the RE vacated.

The Left WB runs power action. The QB hand off to the WB and runs bootleg action (it isimportant to carry out the fakes on all our plays) to the left. The WB does not show pass

until he is past the area the End lines up on. The RE waits for the WB to clear and runs to

the flat and the WB runs a 12 yard down and out pattern. We can make an adjustment to

this play. If we call Power Wingback Pass Throwback it means the WB passes back to

the QB. This is why we stress carrying out our fakes. Most youth defenses forget to cover

the QB for he is an eligible receiver also.

    POWER BOOTLEG PASS LEFT

This is a good play for when the defense over pursues to stop the Power. We

use this play to influence the defense and we go the other way with the ball

The Offensive line uses gap-on-down pass protection rules

The entire backfield runs Power action. The QB fakes a hand off (and try tomake a convincing fake) to the Left WB and runs bootleg action to the left

side. The LE fakes a down block and runs a corner pattern. If the Cornerback

covers the End , the QB runs. If the DB comes up to stop the run, the pass

    goes to the End.

This is the only play where our QB actually drops back and throws the ball.

The Offensive line uses gap-on-down pass protection rules

The Ends run banana routes to the out side and the WBs run inside banana

routes. Each runs 7 yards and turns and looks back at the QB. The QB spinsand fakes a hand off to the FB and then drops back one more step. This is the

only play we use that the QB has to make reads. For example, pick up the

Safety. if he shades to the right go left with the ball. This read has cut the

number of receivers in half that you can throw to. Whichever End or WB on

the side that is is open is thrown the ball.

This site is an absolute must for the youth coach. Coach Wade has provided a resource that

provided the inspiration for this PowerPoint presentation. This site convinced us to go to

    unconventional offenses and defenses.

    THE 2000 VANCEBORO GIANTS

This PowerPoint Presentation is dedicated to the 2000 anceboro Giants. This team

showed us what is important in youth football. The season was to start soon and it

looked like we wouldnt be able to field a team due to the floods that hit our area. These

kids had one week of practice and then were competitive from the first game and ended

up 4-2. They showed dedication, desire, and heart. The kids listened to the coaches,

hustled, and willed their way to a successful season against teams that were

bigger, stronger, and faster. Most importantly, they had fun. The 2000 Giants showed

the coaches that the coaches must do everything possible to help kids succeed in football.

With hindsight being 20/20, we believe now , we may have had a championship if we

had used the Double Wing and the Gap-8
