Auburn had been the only team Vandy has played in thetournament without ever winning. The Commodores (17-11) hadlost six tournament games to Auburn.

It looked like the Tigers (12-16) would extend their streak whenthey led throughout the first half, including 34-31 at halftime.

The teams swapped the lead seven times within 10 minutesduring the second half, and Auburn last led 54-53 on RasheemBarrett's dunk off Quantez Robertson's alley-oop pass.Vanderbilt took the lead back for good on a jumper by DeMarreCarroll with 7:04 remaining, the first of seven straight points.Vandy clinched the victory at the line, hitting 6-of-8 in the final49 seconds.

College Park, Md., native Davis Nwankwo will watchtoday’s game from the Vanderbilt bench after a heart con-dition — detected following his collapse at a practice lastMarch — concluded his college playing career.

Nwankwo, played in 23 games, scoring 12 points andgrabbed 30 rebounds last season as a redshirt freshmanfor the Commodores.

Vanderbilt athletic trainer Mike Meyer revived Nwankwoafter administering one shock from an automated externaldefibrillator (AED) and two rescue breaths. For his quickand steady response Meyer later was named the “Aboveand Beyond” Division I Athletic Trainer of the Year by theNational Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).

Bell selected Vanderbilt over LSU and Ole Miss."Keegan has all the instincts you'd expect from some-

one who grew up in a basketball family," Stallings said ofBell whose father, Dan, has been a successful high schoolcoach Alabama and Division I coach in Louisiana. "Keeganis an excellent ball handler and passer who possessesexceptional shooting skills and good quickness."

Walker is a 6-7, 210-pound forward from Flossmoor, Ill.The versatile Walker averaged 15 points, 8.2 rebounds and2.6 assists at Homewood-Flossmoor High School as a sen-ior last season. He is currently playing a post-graduate yearat Brewster Academy, a prep school in Wolfeboro, N.H.

Named one of the most complete players in Chicago bythe Chicago Tribune, Walker helped lead the Vikings to theIllinois Class 2A sectionals in both his junior and seniorseasons. In summer 2005, Walker was a member of aChicago Ferrari squad that won the 17-and-under AAUNational Championship.

Walker chose Vanderbilt over Arizona State, Coloradoand Seton Hall.

"What sets Andre apart is his ability to shoot the basket-ball," Stallings said. "He has great range and an easyrelease. He's got a body similar to Derrick Byars and is agreat ball handler and passer for someone his size. Hehad foot surgery in the summer that limited some of hisrecruiting, but we feel fortunate to get him. He should be agood addition to our program."

G A M E 1No. 8 Georgetown ......................................86at Vanderbilt ..............................................70

Nov. 15, 2006 • Nashville, Tenn. (Memorial Gymnasium)

Jeff Green scored 19 points, Roy Hibbert added 18 with 10rebounds, and No. 8 Georgetown never trailed in beatingVanderbilt 86-70.

Junior Alex Gordon had 15 points off the bench in Vanderbilt'sseason opener.

The victory was a nice bit of revenge for the Hoyas (2-0) wholost at home last season to Vanderbilt after blowing a 13-point leadin that game.

Not this time as Georgetown used its size with the 7-foot-2Hibbert and speed to drive to the basket repeatedly for easylayups. The Hoyas outshot (52.5 percent to 41.5 percent) and out-rebounded Vandy 38-33 in putting the game away.

Jonathan Wallace had 16 points, and Jessie Sapp had 11 for theHoyas.

Alex Gordon had 15 points off the bench, and Derrick Byarsadded 14 for Vanderbilt, which lost its season opener on its homecourt for the first time since 1990. Dan Cage had 10 points.

But Shan Foster, the Southeastern Conference's third-leadingreturning scorer, went 0-of-5 from the floor and had a pair of freethrows for his only points. That was well below his 15.9-point aver-age last season.

Georgetown led 39-35 at halftime, and Byars had a steal and alayup to start the second half and pull the Commodores within 39-37. They didn't come closer than five the rest of the way.

Ishmael Smith had 17 points and nine assists Tuesday night tolead Wake Forest past Vanderbilt 88-78.

Fellow rookie Jamie Skeen added 16 points and 10 rebounds forthe Demon Deacons (4-0), who took a double-digit lead late in thefirst half and stayed in control the rest of the way.

Shan Foster scored 23 points for the Commodores (0-2), whohung around but struggled to get the defensive stops they neededto get back in the game. Fellow wingman Derrcik Byars added 18points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Most of that difficulty started with Smith, a 5-foot-11 freshmanfrom Concord with impressive baseline-to-baseline speed. He pro-vided the perfect floor leadership for coach Skip Prosser's up-tempo attack, repeatedly attacking the rim for easy baskets or tocreate opportunities for teammates. Behind Smith, the DemonDeacons shot 48 percent and finished with 17 fast-break points.

The Demon Deacons led by as many as 14 points in the game, with the Commodores getting no closer than seven points after thebreak and getting in foul trouble early.

Vanderbilt jumped to an early six-point lead before Wake Forestcharged ahead, getting seven straight points from Williams to takea 36-27 lead with 3:55 left in the half.
