Commerce program. Over 97% of Honours students were accepted
in their first choice of program and university last year.
Your referrals are important. Over 65% of applicants apply
because their teacher suggests they are good candidates.
They need to have an 80% average and be presently taking 6-7
classes. Applications can be found in A-286. You can also send me
the names and ID numbers and I will contact the students directly.
The deadline to apply is Thursday December 7th, 2017. If the
teachers or the students have any questions they can contact me.
See the application form attached at the end of Intercom.

PEER TEACHING COURSE: CALL FOR APPLICANTS
The “Peer Teaching” course is a special B-Block English course (603-HS course) open to students in all programs and offered every winter semester. Every fall, I recruit students with strong English language skills who are interested in learning how to teach and help other students. This course is a good opportunity for exceptional students to gain valuable peer tutoring experience while also obtaining a grade for the B-Block English course. Please encourage motivated and interested students in your classes to apply for my course by Friday, November 24th, 2017. The students who apply must already have taken two English
courses and passed them with a grade of 75% or over. Furthermore, they must be students who have not yet completed a B-Block English course. Application forms are available at my office (N-554) and at the office of the Faculty Dean of General Education (B-208). Applicants will be interviewed during the week of November 27th and selected according to their level of excellence, commitment, and responsibility. Selected students will then be pre-registered into my course in January.
If you require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at extension 7271 or to send an email at [email protected]
Thank you in advance for your help.

Jazz and More!
Welcome back after last week’s brief respite from our excellent UB concerts. This Wednesday at 12:30 in the Auditorium, why not join us and start off the gloomy month of November with some excellent jazz, pop, and fusion courtesy of combos from the studios of Eric Harding and Jacques Labelle? These groups are mad about playing and the music is guaranteed to brighten your day. In fact, we would go so far as to say that even if you’re having the best day of your life, this show will make it even better. Now, how can you beat that? How can you resist? Hope to see you there!

50th Anniversary of the Creation of CEGEPs: Vanier College Invites Saint Laurent Residents to Watch Special Gala Event Including a Performance by the MSO
Vanier College is proud to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of CEGEPs by inviting Saint Laurent residents to watch a simulcast special gala event that will feature, amongst others, a concert by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. The event is taking place in downtown Montreal on November 30th at 8 p.m. and will be simulcast in real time to the Vanier College Auditorium as well as to the other 47 CEGEPs in the network. In addition to the MSO, the event will feature other dance, musical and comedy performances by artists including Koriass, Charles Richard-Hamelin and Jessica Viau. “Vanier College is proud to be part of 50th anniversary of the creation of the CEGEP system, which is unique to Quebec. We would also like to take this opportunity to invite Saint Laurent residents to come to the Vanier Auditorium to enjoy this special concert from the comfort of their own borough for a very nominal cost,” said John McMahon, Director General of Vanier College. Tickets for the concert will be sold for $10 with all proceeds going to the Vanier College Foundation, a registered non-profit organization committed to helping Vanier College maintain its high academic standing and enhancing the educational life of its students. A number of other events have also been organized to celebrate this 50th anniversary landmark. Among them are the release of videos of CEGEP alumni or ambassadors commenting on what CEGEP meant to them and a comprehensive advertising campaign in collaboration with the Fédération des Cégeps, extolling their benefits over the last 50 years. Networking Happy Hour at Vanier with St Laurent Chamber of Commerce
On Thursday, October 19th, 2017, the Chamber of Commerce of St-Laurent Mt Royal held a highly
successful Networking Happy Hour in collaboration with Vanier College, that took place on the 5th
floor of the Vanier Library/Learning Commons. By all accounts, it was a terrifically successful evening.
More than 160 people from Vanier College as well as the Business community attended the event
that aimed to bring together and create links between business and education. Among the special
guests were St Laurent Mayor Alan DeSousa, and Philippe Tessier, representative from the office of
Pierre Arcand, Member of the National Assembly for Mont-Royal.
The evening was an opportunity for people to network with each other and for Vanier College to
thank many of its current partners who were present at the event and who are so important to the success and the vitality of Vanier’s
programs. As well, teachers from both technical and pre-university programs were able to connect with representatives from various
companies with the aim of finding possible placements for student internships or expertise for some of Vanier’s programs.
Vanier College has many connections to business and industry in St-
Laurent. Besides providing companies with students from its Technical
programs for short-term help through internships or work-study
programs, Vanier is preparing them for entry-level positions in many
local industries. As well, the College reaches out to local companies for
guest speakers, teachers, possible members for program advisory
committees, and to offer the services of students in graphic design,
accounting, and music, to name but a few. The Vanier Continuing
Education Department and the Vanier Language School also offer local
businesses custom designed training courses and languages courses in both French and English.
“We value our connections with all of you and we thank those of you who are currently involved with Vanier,” said John McMahon, Director
General of Vanier College. “At the same time, events such as this 5 à 7 will definitely help build new partnerships and collaborations and that
is why I’m so glad you were all able to make it here this evening. We need to keep in touch with one another because while we prepare your
future work force we also need your insight and advice on what society’s future business and industry needs will be.”

International Women`s Week, March 5- 9, 2018: Media and Gender
Call for Presentations
International Women’s Week at Vanier will be exploring the topic of media and gender. This year we want to highlight the
scholarship in women’s and gender issues on campus, so we are inviting members of the Vanier community to submit their ideas
for presentations.
Our students use tools and platforms unavailable to previous generations. They are both more in control of the information and
image they convey to the outside world and— many argue—are more affected by the media that convey these. Many of our
courses already deal explicitly with gender, sexuality, identity and diversity, and how these manifest in our most popular
mediums, such as games, apps, music, films, television, news, advertising, and literature.
We encourage faculty to think about how they might integrate their presentation into their Winter 2018 course schedule. All
presentations take place in the Auditorium. Each presentation is approximately 40 minutes, with a question period of
approximately 15 minutes. We can schedule the presentation to coincide with your class time and day.
We also encourage all members of the Vanier community to submit ideas for presentations. Many of you have expertise in areas
related to the week’s theme.
Proposals should be no more than 150 words indicating the title and content of your presentation. Deadline for submission is
Friday, November 24. Please send submissions to [email protected].

A Micromedia Pass Day outing to the Redpath Museum yields great sketches
On October 25, 2017, Vanier Micromedia teacher Shari Blaukopf took her students on an outing to one of her favourite places to draw —
McGill’s Redpath Museum. Students spent the day sketching the dinosaurs, the taxidermy animals and even a bit of architecture.
“I have to say that it was one of the best days in my teaching career. First of all, at least half of the first-year cohort turned up for the optional
event (this was a day off for them) and they stayed all day! And for a group who (for the most part) were never sketchers before they started
this class, they did some truly incredible work (see the montage below). They made me proud to be their teacher”.

Sketchbook, her blog site at: https://shariblaukopf.com/

Vanier Coop Student Fund 2017-2018
The Vanier Coop, your cooperative, which operates Jake’s Café and Jake’s COOP (Bookstore), is pleased to announce the renewal of a fund to
support student endeavors and help individual students.
We are looking to help support projects that can improve our community, specifically for projects that have strong sustainability and
community oriented links. Particular focus will be on projects that engage students in peer education, as well as projects that aim to promote
Vanier’s new strategic plan and vision statement. We are also willing to support particularly motivated students in their pursuit of a better
education by helping those who may not be able to access a trip, voyage or contest because of travel expenses. We also aim to promote
student entrepreneurial projects that will have an impact by offering a service or product to the Vanier community. Social entrepreneurship
projects (cooperative or non-for-profit) will be looked upon with particular interest.
Projects to be considered can come from groups or from individuals, and do not have to be linked to the above-listed particular categories.
This fund is open to all full-time Vanier day students, as well as to faculty or staff writing on the behalf of a project that will benefit students.
A committee made up of 2 members of the College administration and 2 members of Vanier Coop’s Board of directors will be responsible for
allocating the grants.
Last year, Vanier Coop allocated more than 17 000$ that was distributed to the following projects or organizations:
Robotics
Shanghai Nursing Contest
Tree Tag Project
Malawi Pads Project
International Projects (13 different projects)
Model UN
Prix Littéraire des Collégiens
Malawi Nursing Exchange
Here is a link to the application form:
http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/student-services/vanier-coop/coop-grant-form.pdf
Project proposal deadline is November 3, 2017, at 5pm
Decisions of the committee are final. Applicants may be called in for an interview by the committee.
For any questions about proposals, please contact Monique Magnan at extension 7964.
