Vanier Nursing Malawi Internship

Since 2011, the Nursing Department at Vanier College has offered third-year Nursing students an opportunity to complete their 160-hour stage course (internship) in Malawi, Africa. Students spend their first three weeks working at the rural hospital, St. Andrews, followed by three weeks at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe. This project allows students to gain insights into health care practices in sub-Saharan Africa and to develop their nursing skills in order to create more culturally competent healthcare providers. The 6 students who have been in Malawi since mid-March are being challenged every day as they learn to adapt in a resource-poor country, which can be frustrating but also transformative. Their reflective blog posts express a continuum of emotions but what shines through is ultimately an appreciation of Canada’s healthcare system and a deeper understanding of health related issues. can do with what they have here in Malawi. At times this may mean that not all is done to the capacity of the health care providers’ scope of knowledge for the patient. This is a helpless feeling, one which we have all had the opportunity to experience in the last few weeks. One student commented; ‘How do they (the healthcare workers) return to work day after day?’ One wonderful Clinical Officer responded; ‘I do what I can do by trying to save one life at a time.’ And in our short few weeks at this small rural hospital, he did just that. His dedication, compassion and empathy, not to mention his superb skills and knowledge, were an inspiration to us all.” Read more about the students’ experiences and to follow their life-changing journey.

Also, stay tuned for more information about the 2013 Nursing Conference, Raising Cultural Consciousness, which takes place on May 3rd. Students from the Malawi Nursing Exchange will present what they learned from their stage followed by a panel discussion by past participants who will discuss how their stage in Malawi impacted their professional career. Registration is currently open for Vanier Nursing students but if there is space available, registration will open up to the Vanier community.

Tonight: Gold-winning Vanier College Big Band to play at Benefit Concert hosted by Oliver Jones

The Annual Big Band Benefit Concert for Music Department Scholarships honouring Jim West, President of Justin Time Records, will be held tonight at 7:30pm in the Vanier Auditorium. Jim West, an important figure in Canadian music, has been a long-time supporter of the Music Department, donating CDs as door prizes and gifts for this concert, and supporting a $100 Justin Time Scholarship for the most promising first-year jazz student.

Justin-Time’s first three recording artists, renowned pianist Oliver Jones, jazz singer Ranee Lee and Trevor Payne, director of the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir will give testimonials. Oliver Jones will also perform, as will Ranee Lee and saxophonist Chet Doxas.

The Vanier College Big Band directed by Jocelyn Couture was awarded a gold standard at last weekend’s JazzFest des Jeunes du Québec which makes them eligible to be invited to play at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, where they have performed on several occasions. The professional J.L. Big Band conducted by Christopher Smith will also perform.

This year’s stunning poster was designed by Vanessa Lebeau (Micropublishing and Hypermedia), a student in the class of Joan Fee Taylor.

Tickets (General admission $20, students/seniors $10) can be purchased at the Bookstore or at the door on the night of the concert! Do come and join us for this celebration!

Holocaust Symposium: Message of thanks

The challenge this year was to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Vanier College/Kleinmann Family Foundation Symposium on the Holocaust and Genocide. I think this year’s program did just that.

Those of you who know me were not surprised when we chose a theme of optimism (Change: One Person Can Make a Difference!). Many people have helped to make this year a success. Let me start with Naomi Kramer, the Director of the Kleinmann Family Foundation and Neil Caplan for continued support and guidance! I would like to thank Mike Besner for helping with the planning and Nathan Loewen for his technical expertise.

Around the College, people have made coordinating this event just a little bit easier and they are Odette Côté, Nora Soukiassian, Ivanka Hillel, Jennifer Mitchell, Mike Demole, Löic Boyer, and Bev Chandler, and Sophie Jacmin. Thanks also to all the teachers and speakers who have participated in this year’s Symposium. Our valued organizational partners in this enterprise are the Burman-Wajcer Family Foundation and the Vanier College Teachers Association. Until next year!

Earth Week next week!

“We hear a lot of talk about the environment, maybe too much talk, this week is not about talk, this week is Earth Week, sustainable Earth Week…” (Paraphrased from a famous Irish bard…). April 22

nd is Earth Day and this year we are turning this chance to

celebrate our planet into a week of activities about sustainability. Please join us for a few week-long kiosks. The Vanier Advisory Committee on the Environment (VCACE) will hold a kiosk to hear your ideas and discuss environmental issues and actions on our campus. VEG (the Vanier Environmental Group) will be promoting fair trade organic coffee in the morning, bring your own mug! There will also be a chance for you and students to express yourselves about how you can participate in making a better world. We haven’t stopped talking about plates – please take this week as an opportunity to finally use durable dishware and coffee mugs. As well, the VCSA, the VCTA and the VCPA are sponsoring a contest: secret agents will be watching out for your good environmental deeds and giving you a ticket for a draw when you participate in an event or when they see your sustainable gesture. Prizes include a bicycle, a 10-week organic vegetable basket and a solar-powered back pack. There are also talks, workshops, more kiosks and visits: in all, many ways to learn how you can contribute to making a better planet. And on Thursday (the 25

th), cyclists please bring your

bicycles to the Student Mall as we will be offering mini tune-ups to those who ride in. Please have a look at our program in hopes we can motivate you to become empowered in your everyday actions. Since things are constantly changing, check our website for the most up-to-date program of events: http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/student-services/sustainability/

First-Time Donor’s Super Tax Credit

First-time donors (i.e. those who have not claimed the Charitable Donation Tax Credit in any of the five preceding tax years) are eligible for a supplement to the existing non-refundable tax credit for charitable donations made after March 20, 2013. The new credit adds 25% to the rates used in calculation of the CDTC (15% for donations of $200 or less and 29% for donations up to $1000). Here is an example of how the super tax credit would be applied. An eligible first-time donor claims $500 of charitable donations in 2013. All of the donations are donations of money. The first-time donor’s tax credit would be calculated as follows:

First $200 of charitable donations claimed: $200 x 15% =

$30

Charitable donations claimed in excess of $200:

$300 x 29% =

$87

First-Time Donor’s Super Credit: $500 x 25% =

$125

Total FDSC and CDTC: $242

If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity to reduce your income tax while supporting our students, click here for the Vanier College Foundation donation form. For more information contact Jonathan Goldman (x7098).

April 26th, 2013, World Premiere of WHISPER, an Original Musical written by Music students

For the first time ever, music students have written, performed and produced an original musical (Whisper), which will be presented on April 26-27, at 7:30pm and Sunday April 28

th at

1:30pm in the Vanier Auditorium. The original stage play, written by Chelsea Pringle-Duchemin is about pursuing dreams, about friendship and love. The story is set in a performing arts school. There’s no lead character, all eight cast members are equally important, and the eight different stories are linked together in order to build one big story.

Around fifty students are involved with the project, including the lead cast, chorus members, musicians, director, conductor, script writer, composer, choreographers, stage hands, props and set designers/artists.

Do come and support this unique event. Reserve tickets, please write to: whisper.musical @gmail.com. Seats are going fast. (Suggested donation $10).

Teaching Tip: Learning with Marzano

Robert Marzano published his A new Taxonomy of Educational Objectives (2000) in response to Bloom’s taxonomy. Like Fink, Marzano suggests a different perspective on the key elements and stages in the learning process. According to Marzano’s taxonomy, how we use knowledge to learn is affected by three systems: the Cognitive System, the Metacognitive System and the Self System. Knowledge Domains Marzano identifies three types of knowledge that are essential to thinking and learning: Information is the substance that we think about. It includes everything from theories and generalizations to data and vocabulary.

Mental Procedures are what we do with information and how we classify, analyze, and apply that information.

Physical Procedures are the physical skills we may need to be able to perform certain tasks, such as the proper hand motions in writing, or the physical skills to play a sport.

Systems How we process information is then affected by three different systems:

Cognitive System Once we have some knowledge from the knowledge domain, we can then go through the 4 stages of the cognitive system in order to learn. 1. Knowledge Retrieval

Very similar to knowledge on Bloom’s taxonomy, at this level you can recall information.

2. Comprehension Requires the ability to synthesize information and to be able to represent that information in an organized fashion

3. Analysis Involves being able to analyze information through matching, classifying, error analysis, generalizing, and specifying in order to be able to apply the information to a new situation

4. Knowledge Utilization Application of knowledge to answer questions or resolve problems in decision-making, problem-solving, experimental inquiry, and investigation

Metacognitive System The metacognitive system controls how we approach and adjust our learning in the cognitive system. It is about our thinking about our learning. Metacognition helps us identify the best strategies to be able to learn and understand new information. It involves specifying learning goals and then monitoring the execution of knowledge, accuracy, and clarity. Self-System The self-system is what motivates us to learn and can be positively or negatively affected by a number of factors. If we believe that the knowledge or skill we are going to learn is important and could help us in some way we will be more motivated to learn it. Our own sense of self-efficacy can determine if we will persist at learning something difficult or if we will give up. The emotions we experience in association with some knowledge and learning experiences can also positively or negatively affect our desire to learn.

Additional Resources For a clear summary of Marzano’s taxonomy, check out this article.

For an explanation of the different stages in the learning process, with examples, you can check out this PowerPoint Presentation

You can also check out this list of actions verbs for each of the systems in Marzano’s taxonomy.

DIRECTOR GENERAL’S REPORT BOARD MEETING APRIL 9, 2013 _________________________________________________________________________________________

1. 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 FUNDING REDUCTIONS

The attached memo summarizes the situation with regard to MELS funding reductions for this year and next.

In summary, Vanier will see a reduction of $450,000 for the current year, i.e. our share of the $16.5M in

reduction imposed by the government. For next year, the cut is not anticipated to be greater than this year,

but it will not be confirmed before Fall 2013. In the meantime, this year’s reduction was taken from the MELS

allocation at the end of March, prior to the government fiscal year end. The college position is that we will

terminate our fiscal year (June 30th) on the basis of the Board approved budget. Any shortfall would then be

taken from the college surplus.

2. STRATEGIC PLAN PROCESS

The work of the Strategic Plan Advisory Committee is on-going, with a focus on completing the Mission,

Vision, Values portion of the work in the coming weeks. The committee is also working on the assessment of

strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) with a first draft being prepared. That document

will then be circulated to the community for comments. A consultant will be brought in to assess progress to

date and to help with the preparation of a broad statement of strategic directions and objectives which is

intended to be presented to the Board in June 2013. This will be the foundation document to help guide the

next phase of the work next Fall, which will focus more on the details of the plan (actions).

3. COMMISSION D’ÉVALUATION DE L’ENSEIGNEMENT COLLÉGIAL (CEEC) VISIT

On April 16 and 17, a committee of the CEEC will be at Vanier to review with us the situation with regard to

our strategic planning efforts, including the student success plan. Essentially, the panel will want to discuss

with various members of the college community, the situation with regard to the implementation and

assessment of our 2008-2013 Strategic Plan and the details contained in our self-assessment document which

was submitted to the CEEC in February 2013 following Board approval. That document demonstrated our

awareness of the need to strengthen our various planning processes and the ways in which the plan is being

implemented throughout the college.

I had an opportunity to discuss the upcoming visit of the CEEC with both the Chair of the Commission, Michel

Lauzière, and with the chair of the visiting delegation, John Keyes. We all agreed that the focus of the visit

should be on helping the college move forward with the current preparation of the 2013-2018 Strategic and

Student Success Plan.

The CEEC delegation has asked to meet with the Board on Tuesday, April 16th from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. While

the Board has been very busy over the past few months and will continue to be for some time on the various

tasks related to hiring and mandate renewal, it would be important to come and meet the CEEC group for a

short discussion on Strategic Planning.

4. BILL 14

As you may know, the legislative process eventually leading to the adoption of Bill 14 is underway with a

Parliamentary Committee receiving submissions from the public on the matter. While the Anglophone

community is strongly opposed to the Bill, it still appears that it will be brought forward to a vote at the

National Assembly. While both opposition parties have expressed their opposition to the Bill, it is still

expected that the legislation will be adopted with some modifications. Opposition objections to the Bill do

not seem to deal much with the concerns expressed by English colleges. It is mostly related to the impact on

small businesses and to access to English language education for military personnel. If the Bill is adopted, I

believe it will continue to include the two clauses that affect colleges, i.e. admitting graduates from English

schools first, and French language proficiency testing prior to graduating.

During a visit to Vanier by Minister Jean-François Lisée a couple of weeks ago, nor his presentation to a group

of students or my short discussion with him, indicated a softening of the position on that part of the Bill.

5. MAJOR PROVINCIAL AND SYSTEM WIDE DISCUSSIONS ON COLLEGE EDUCATION

Following the recent summit on post-secondary education, three significant exercises are now underway

which may have an impact on the college system in Québec. The first and most significant is the work that

will be carried out under the direction of Guy Demers, a former college DG and senior bureaucrat, who has

been asked to look into the issue of ensuring equilibrium in the system between urban and regional colleges.

Among the topics that will be discussed are questions related to the distribution of programs, to enrolment

management, including student mobility, and to the allocation of resources to ensure equity in the system.

That committee is expected to report its finding by Spring 2014. Another group is looking into the ‘Régime

d’études collégiales’, the instrument that frames our existence, to see what could be done to increase

flexibility in developing new programs and new educational partnerships which would make the system more

responsive to society’s needs. Among possible outcomes, this work could lead to better college-university

initiatives, similar to what exist in other part of the country. The third area is with regard to continuing

education where the prevailing view is that college system, as it is, does not meet the need of employers. It

will look at how to better structure and fund initiatives.

Page 10: Vanier Nursing Internship in Malawi€¦ · Vanier Nursing Malawi Internship Since 2011, the Nursing Department at Vanier College has offered third-year Nursing students an opportunity

Meilleures salutations.

Swim-a-thon 2013

The Aquatic program would like to announce its 3rd annual swim-a-thon. This year, we are working

with Jim Atkinson, Vanier's Socio-Economic Officer, to collect funds for the Vanier College Students

in Need Fund of the Vanier College Foundation. If you wish to participate please contact Jessica

Braul at 514-744-7500 (8237) or email at [email protected].

The swim-a-thon will take place at Vanier College Sports Complex Pool on Friday May 10th, 2013

from 13h00 to 15h00. Participants wishing to help raise funds will swim in one hour blocks - if you are

up to the challenge, you may swim solo. We also encourage team building; register a team of 4 to 8

swimmers to share the hour.

There are no fees to register but please pick up (in G104) a form to collect sponsors for your efforts in

the pool and raise funds for the Vanier College Students in need.
