Vanier Sponsor a Student for a Semester or more Program
I would like to share the following with the Vanier community; it is the story of one teacher making a difference! “I used to donate money to a local charity, but I decided a few years ago that I’d rather help someone even closer to home. I knew that there had to be Vanier students struggling financially, who were deserving of some help. Jim Atkinson (Vanier Financial Aid Officer) told me about a really deserving student who was very good in her studies but who was a single mother, struggling to support her two kids while making her way through school. At Jim’s suggestion, I bought grocery store vouchers. I gave him 6 months of vouchers at a time, and he gave them out monthly. I
Volume M 11, Issue No. 13, November 18, 2013
was able to choose how much I contributed and for how long. I usually chose to give $50 a month (with an extra $50 at Christmas) for as long as the student was in need and at Vanier. I chose $50 a month because I thought that it was an amount that could make a big difference in a struggling student’s life, and it was about the same as I used to give to outside organizations. It gave me a real feeling of joy to know that I was able to make such a difference in someone’s life. I could imagine how it was helping improve the student’s life and removing some of the anxiety that goes with not having enough money. And it was especially poignant to know that I was helping someone get an education that would help them permanently better their lives”. — Anonymous Vanier Teacher Student scenarios and testimonials from students helped so far: 1. Single parent (divorced) with two young children; no financial
contribution from ex-husband. Newly immigrated to Quebec, no financial or any other kind of family support. “This program helped keep me in school to finish my program and I thank you very much”. She was an excellent student and she has graduated and is working in her field.
2. Single, deterioration of family situation, mother died of cancer
during her first year of a three year program. Her father suffers from a psychiatric illness which made it impossible for her to remain in the home. “I really appreciate the help; I am now able to have food at home”.
3. Married with three young children under the age of seven.
Student ineligible to receive student loans. Student’s spouse, a recent Vanier College graduate is a full-time university student. They have no support in Canada. “Thank you, thank you and God bless you for this help”.
We are looking for more people to get involved and help our students in financial need by sponsoring a student for a semester or more. If you are interested, please feel free to contact me (ext. 7883). This program is offered through Student Services and the Vanier College Foundation. Tax receipts will be made available upon request.

PEER TEACHING COURSE
The Peer Teaching course is a special B-Block English course (603-HS course) open to students in all programs and offered every winter semester.
Every fall, I recruit students with strong English language skills who are interested in learning how to tutor/teach and help other students. This course is an opportunity for exceptional students to gain valuable pedagogical experience while also obtaining a B-Block (603-HS) English grade.
Please encourage motivated and interested students in your classes to apply for my course by Friday, November 29, 2013. The students who apply must have already taken two English courses and passed them with a grade of 75% or over. Furthermore, they must be students who have not yet completed a B-Block English course.
Application forms are available at my office (N-554) and at the FSGS Dean’s office (B-208). The applicants will be interviewed in early December and selected according to their level of excellence, commitment, and responsibility. If you require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at ext. 7271 or send me an email at [email protected]
Thank you for your consideration,

English Exit Exam Workshops
The Learning Centre is holding two types of English Exit Exam workshops for any student who is writing the English Exit Exam on December 18th. Please encourage your students to attend one of these workshops, as they provide valuable information in helping them prepare for the exam.
"Preparing for the English Exit Exam" Workshops This workshop will give information about the exam: what it looks like, what one will be asked to do, how it is assessed and suggestions on how to write it. We will also discuss tips on what to do to pass the English Exit Exam. All of these workshops are the same/

Teaching Tip: A little encouragement goes a long way
At this point in the semester you’ve done your midterm assessments. Students should have a better understanding of how they are doing in their courses. Some are doing well; others, not.
Now is a good time to do a short,
well-targeted follow-up with those students who are at risk of failing. At this point in the semester we all feel
the crunch. Sometimes all students need is a little encouragement to help them keep going or to get back on track.
What you can do: Send them a Mio just to check in. Take a moment to talk to them at the end of class. Ask them to visit you during your office hours.
Whichever way you choose to touch base with them, try to make it a positive message: you can still pass this course with some effort. Taking any of these approaches can help show your students that you do care about their success in your course. Encourage them to talk to you about what they can do differently to succeed in your course. When students are faced with poor or failing grades early in the semester, and especially in their mid-term assessment, they often assume there is no way for them to improve that grade. They may believe they’ve already failed the course and simply stop coming. Letting them know that it’s not too late, that with some real effort they could pass the course, can encourage them to stick it through to the end.

Get Ready to Rock…
It’s here, it’s here, it’s finally here! This Wednesday, November 20, at 12:30 in the Auditorium is the music department’s much anticipated Student Academic Success Series recital tracing the history of blues-based music in the twentieth century.
This year’s featured styles are 1950s Rock ‘n’ Roll and Rockabilly. Short presentations on the development of these two styles will be given by Glen Ethier, and then the student groups will take over the stage presenting examples of songs by such notable performers as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee
Lewis, Carl Perkins, Barbara Pittman, Wanda Jackson, Buddy Holly, and of course, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley. Believe it or not, you can learn a bit about these styles AND have a lot of fun at the show.
Don’t miss it! It’s free for everyone, and a great way to dispel those ¾-term/winter’s-almost-here/exams-are-coming blues (pun most definitely intended!).

Bake Sale to help cover costs of the March 2014 student trip in the new complementary course: Le Nord: Territoires et Imaginaires
Come encourage our students in their fundraising activities! Wednesday, November 20, 10 am to 2pm,
N-building near N-104 (elevators) Although we will be travelling within the province, the cost of a coach bus & driver who will follow us all along the North Shore of the St Lawrence River for a total of 2800 km is quite high! Participating students will enthusiastically prepare great food for your pallet. Come and try out our cupcakes, cookies, crepes, and more!

VCSA Anti-Bullying Awareness Committee
The VCSA Anti-Bullying Awareness Committee consists of students who want to raise awareness about bullying on the school campus and let them know about the services available to students such as the Student Services' (C-203) Student Advocate and councillors and the VCSA's Student Advocate. Our project consists of a short video with students who give words of advice to those who are going through rough times and describe themselves in a positive way. As well, we have currently collected 168 surveys that students have answered regarding bullying. Lastly, we are working on a painted-rock exhibit that volunteers have helped us with. We would like to collect as many surveys as possible. Here is the link: https://survey.zohopublic.com/zs/mJDrMV Also, for anyone who is interested, the VCSA will be having a "Paint-A-Rock-for-Anti-Bullying-Awareness" Week Time: anytime time during the students' break Place: VCSA - C-214 Goal: Paint rocks for the anti-bullying awareness exhibit *Note: Each rock represents the Vanier Student body as a diverse and multicultural community. We would appreciate it if teachers could let their students know about the Anti-Bullying Committee survey and activities. Thank you! Word of Thanks from the Vanier College/Kleinmann Family Foundation Symposium on the Holocaust and Genocide
As I sit and reflect on the 21st Annual Symposium, I am once again awed at how messages associated with the Symposium have managed to impact both students and staff alike! There were once again many tears shed and many learning experiences shared.
I would like to thank all who have supported the Symposium all of these years. There are many who have really helped to make this year’s Symposium successful: Naomi Kramer (of the Kleinmann Family Foundation), Gilbert Héroux, Martine Gauthier, Odette Côté, Olga Gazdovic, Joan Fee, Shari Blaukopf, Marguerite Corriveau, Nora Soukiassian, Ivanka Hillel, and Mike Besner. Our valued organizational partners in this enterprise are the Burman-Wajcer Family Foundation, the Vanier College Teachers Association, and the Vanier College Students Association.
Many Thanks,
Marlene Grossman, Psychology Department
