The word Kashi originated from the word Kas which means to shine. According to the Vamana Purana, the Varuna and the Assi rivers originated from the body of the primeval lord at the beginning of time itself. The tract of land lying between them is believed to be Varanasi. It is also believed that Kashi is the original ground created by Shiva and Parvati, upon which they stood at the beginning of time. To be in Varanasi is an experience in itself an experience in selfdiscover an eternal oneness of the body and soul. To every visitor; Varanasi offers a breathtaking experience. In Varanasirivers "Varuna" and "Asi" have been polluted beyond recognition that now they flow not a rivers but just torrents of sewage and waste water mixing at the start.

The ineffectiveness of the current Ganga Action Plan could be found based on the results observedThe unrealized factNote:Higher the Biochemical Oxygen Demand, higher is the pollution (conversely there ismore dissolved oxygen neededto make the water safe)6http://www.sankatmochanfoundationonline.org/PollutionofGanga.html (source of the table)6

On an average, there is 650 metricton solid waste disposal in this city per day. Due to lack of defined dumping ground and scientific method of disposal, the waste of city is being dumped on low lands available on the outskirts. This practice by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) continued for decades. To find a permanent solution, the SWM was adopted by the urban development department and its detailed project report of Rs 48.67 crores also got the nod of government under JNNURM. The issue of realizing user charges from people during door-to-doorgarbagecollection was politicized. The A2Z and VMC could be seen fighting on the issue of payments for the transportation of solid waste from city's dumping centers to Karsada, where the plant for scientific disposal of garbage could not be completed so far.
