Forthe first time, Royal MailRoyal MailRoyal MailRoyal MailRoyal Mail installed six philatelic kiosks on itsstand, three of which belonged to other postaladministrations from the growing ‘Post & Go’ family; JerseyPost, Guernsey Post and the Royal Gibraltar Post Office. Thisis only a indication of the incredible evolution of thisequipment and its issues. From the four Intelligent ARIntelligent ARIntelligent ARIntelligent ARIntelligent AR kiosksinstalled at Spring Stampex 2014, it has gone, in just overone year, to twenty postal kiosks in service, hopefully, fromSeptember 2015. This all seems to suggest that we are onlyat the beginning ...

At the philatelic level, these machines have been a realrevolution in the world of stamp collecting, with interestingapplications for postal administrations, and innovative andattractive issues for collectors.Although it is not an entirely unprecedented idea in theworld of variable value stamps, the installation of IARIARIARIARIARequipment allows philatelic services to release specialtemporary issues in other countries. These can be easilyadapted to the event or location, through well-designedself-service easy-to-use kiosks requiring minimalmaintenance.Furthermore, the infinite combinations kiosk - label designs– special texts / graphics offered by these machines are apowerful tool in the hands of postal administrations andphilatelic services, whose possibilities we / they have onlybegun to glimpse, and whose limits must be clearlyestablished ... using common sense. Excessive orunreasonable issues, the difficulty in obtaining them, oreven a lack of control, with the repeated issue of varietiesand / or errors, will create boredom and rejection bycollectors, already saturated by all kinds of philatelicemissions.

Porprimera vez, Royal MailRoyal MailRoyal MailRoyal MailRoyal Mail instaló en su stand seis quioscosfilatélicos, tres de los cuales pertenecían a otrasadministraciones postales integrantes de la creciente familia‘Post & Go’; Jersey Post, Guernsey Post y Royal Gibraltar PostOffice. Pero esto es sólo un reflejo de la increíble evolución deestos equipos y sus emisiones. De los cuatro quioscos IntelligentIntelligentIntelligentIntelligentIntelligentARARARARAR instalados en el Spring Stampex 2014, se ha pasado, enpoco más de un año, a los veinte quioscos postales en servicioprevistos para septiembre de 2015. Y todo parece indicar queestamos sólo al principio ...

A nivel filatélico, estos equipos han supuesto una auténticarevolución en el mundo del coleccionismo de sellos, conutilidades muy interesantes para las administraciones postales, yemisiones novedosas y atractivas para los coleccionistas.Aunque no es un concepto totalmente inédito en el mundo delos sellos de valor variable, la instalación de los equipos IARIARIARIARIARpermite, a los servicios filatélicos, realizar emisiones temporalesespeciales en otros países. Éstas pueden ser adaptadasfácilmente al evento o localización, a través de quioscos deautoservicio bien diseñados, fáciles de utilizar, y que requierenun mantenimiento mínimo.Por otra parte, las infinitas combinaciones quiosco - diseños deetiquetas - textos / gráficos especiales que permiten estosequipos son un potente instrumento en manos deadministraciones postales y servicios filatélicos, cuyasposibilidades sólo hemos empezado a vislumbrar, y cuyoslímites deben ser establecidos con claridad ... y sentido común.Por supuesto, un exceso de emisiones, la dificultad en suobtención, o incluso la falta de control con una reiteradaaparición de variedades y/o errores, implicarán el hastío y elrechazo por parte de los coleccionistas, ya muy saturados desupuestas novedades filatélicas de todo tipo.

El 30 de marzo de 2015, un año después de la últimamodificación de tarifas postales, Royal Mail volvió a aumentarsus tarifas y simplificó aún más el sistema tarifario con lasupresión de otro tramo de peso. Los seis tramos en queestaba dividido el correo estándar internacional hasta 100 g.antes de marzo de 2014 (hasta 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 y 100 g.),pasaron a cuatro en las tarifas vigentes desde el 31 de marzode 2014 (hasta 10, 20, 60 y 100 g.), y a tan sólo tres desde el

30 de marzo de 2015 (hasta 10,20 y 100 g.). On March 30th 2015, exactly one year after the last changeof postal rates, Royal Mail again increased some prices andsimplified the rates with the removal of another weight step.The six weight steps established before March 2014 forinternational standard letters up to 100g, (10, 20, 40, 60, 80 &100 g), were reduced to four from March 31st 2014 (10, 20, 60& 100 g), and to three from March 30th 2015 (10, 20 & 100 g).

This involved the change of two of the six postage ratesprogrammed intothe ‘Post & Go’kiosks. The values‘Europe up to 60g’& ‘Worldwide up to60g’, in force foronly one year, werereplaced by ‘Europeup to 100g’ &‘Worldwide up to100g’, respectively.

En la fecha de puestaen servicio, el quioscopodía emitir ATMsATMsATMsATMsATMs con losdos diseños básicos,‘Machin’ (en la reimpresión de 2013 -MA13) y ‘Union flag’ (en la ediciónoriginal). Al igual que el resto de quioscospermanentes instalados en museos, RoyalMail decidió incluir una impresión especialo identificador en todos los sellos emitidospor el equipo; En este caso, ‘The FAAMThe FAAMThe FAAMThe FAAMThe FAAM’(The FThe FThe FThe FThe Fleet AAAAAir AAAAArm MMMMMuseum). Además,como novedad, estaba previsto incluirtambién un diseño gráfico con unaimagen del logo del museo, pero a causade problemas de comunicación delequipo en su emplazamiento, se decidióretrasar la introducción del diseño.

The Intelligent AR postalkiosk was put into operationon April 14th 2015, next tothe exit of the museum shop(pictures). It is kiosk A003A003A003A003A003, firstintroduced at the LondonSpring Stampex 2014 (see

VARIABLE 32 32 32 32 32) andsubsequently used,temporarily, in the EnquiryOffice of Crewe and severalphilatelic events.

On the first day in service,the kiosk used the stamps onrolls of the two currentdefinitive designs, the

‘Machin’ (2013 reprint - MA13) and the ‘Union flag’, in theoriginal edition. Like the other permanentkiosks installed in museums, Royal Maildecided to include a special imprint oridentifier on all stamps issued by themachine. In this case, ‘The FAAMThe FAAMThe FAAMThe FAAMThe FAAM’ (TheTheTheTheTheFFFFFleet AAAAAir AAAAArm MMMMMuseum). Royal Mail alsoplanned to include a graphic design withthe museum logo, but because of atechnical problem with the connection,the introduction of the graphic was finallydelayed.

Like other Intelligent AR kiosks, this is amachine with great potential. However,because its current features will be rarelyused by museum visitors, and its survivaland profitability are again subject to its

Earliest forerunner of the current ‘Post & GoPost & GoPost & GoPost & GoPost & Go’stamps, the Penny BlackPenny BlackPenny BlackPenny BlackPenny Black was the world’s firstadhesive postage stamp.

In 1837, at the initiative of Sir Rowland Hill, theBritish government undertook a major reform of itspostal system, simplifying the complex postal ratesand introducing the stamp as a postage prepaidindicator. Until then, the recipient paid postage ondelivery, according to the distance the item hadtravelled. After the reform, the sender would pay the postalrate, according to weight and regardless of distance. The ‘Union flag’ design has a free space of only 25 mm., at theleft side of the design (40 mm. in the ‘Machin’ designs), whichdoes not allow for the graphic impression. Curiously, on the

first day of issue, themuseum had a reducedstock of ‘Machin 1st Class’postage labels, which weresold out within three hours.

This special imprint wasavailable for three months,until August 7th. Variousrolls of ‘Machin’ labels withdifferent reprintings wereused throughout the issue.

tras la actualización, la tarde del 7 de julio. Este error afectótodos los sellos emitidos durante poco más de 24 horas, hastala mañana del 9 de julio. Al parecer, se emitieron unacantidad muy limitada de ATMsATMsATMsATMsATMs con esta variedad, lo que loha convertido en uno de los errores más cotizados. En unareciente subasta, dos ‘Collectors Strips’ (imágenes superiores,

extraídas de un portal de subastas) fueron vendidos por algo más de500 Libras esterlinas (unos 700 EUR) ... por cierto, unacantidad muy superior al valor actual de muchos ‘PennysBlack’ ... En definitiva, otro motivo de indignación para lamayoría de coleccionistas.

Y por si esto no fuera suficiente, tras la reintroducción delanterior diseño gráfico y hasta el final de la emisión, la Maltese

Cross se imprimía enuna posicióndiferente,ligeramentedesplazada a laderecha y haciaabajo con relación asu posición original.

Thetotal print run was 400copies. The right cover wasproduced one week later,on the occasion of theparticipation of themuseum in Europhilex2015. The cover features aMulready cover sent to Malta. The run was limited to 300.

In July 2015, apparently after a major remote upgrade ofthe kiosk, there was an important software error whereby thegraphic design with the Maltese Cross was replaced byanother graphic,similar to the designprinted, in August2014, to mark the80th anniversary ofinland airmail (see

article in VARIABLE 34 34 34 34 34).Possibly, it was apreliminary design, which was never used at that time, but ithad been kept in the system and, incomprehensibly, ‘patched’into the machine software after the upgrade, on the eveningof July 7th. This error appeared in all the stamps issued overthe next 24 hours, until the morning of July 9th. Apparently, avery limited number of ATMsATMsATMsATMsATMs with this variety were issued,and it has become one of the most prized errors. At a recentauction, two ‘Collectors Strips’ (upper images, taken from an online

auction) were sold for over 500 pounds (about 700 EUR) - anamount much higher than the current value of many ‘PennyBlacks’ ! ... Another source of outrage for most collectors.

If that was not enough, after the reintroduction of theprevious graphic design, and until the end of the issue, theMaltese Crossgraphic was printedin a slightly differentposition, havingmoved to the rightand downwardsrelative to its originalposition.

No parecía que la huelga ferroviaria convocada para esosdías hubiera afectado al número de visitantes y, durante elprimer día, miles de coleccionistas acudieron a la cita. Uno delos espacios más visitados fue el gran stand de Deutsche Post(imágenes), que aprovechó la presencia de los equipos ‘Post &Go’ para instalar dos quioscos postales Sielaff (derecha). Of these,five were held in the United Kingdom (86th Scottish Congress,Midpex, the two Stampexs, and Europhilex 2015), with theremaining four being held at major international fairs andexhibitions. Three of the philatelic fairs were in Europe -Essen,Sindelfingen and Paris-, and Singpex 2015, in Singapore.

The first appearance of the ‘Post & Go’ equipment inmainland Europe was at the25th InternationaleBriefmarken-Messe, theEssen stamps fair, inGermany. With over 30postal administrations, 80commercial stands, plusmany study groupsattending the event, it isone of the main annualphilatelic fairs in thiscountry. The stamp fair washeld from May 7th to 9th

2015, in one of the halls ofthe large Messe Essen.

Apparently, it did notseem that the railway strikeon those days had affected

the number of visitors. During the first day, thousands ofcollectors attended the event. One of the most crowdedplaces was the large Deutsche Post stand (images), which tookadvantage of the presence of the ‘Post & Go’ equipment toinstall two of its Sielaff postal kiosks (left). However, bothmachines issued the two definitive designs ‘Brandenburg

Gate’ and ‘Post Tower’, whichhad been on sale sinceOctober 2008 (see article inVARIABLE 11 11 11 11 11).

La primera exposición filatélicacelebrada en Londres se remonta a1890. En estos 125 años, la ciudadha acogido grandes exposiciones yferias filatélicas, 50 de ellasinternacionales y, hoy por hoy,puede considerarse como la capital europea de la filatelia. LaEurophilexEurophilexEurophilexEurophilexEurophilex se celebró del miércoles 13 al sábado 16 de mayode 2015 en el emplazamiento habitual de las Stampex, elBusiness Design Centre de Islington.

En este caso, dada la envergadura del evento, laorganización instaló la gran exposición filatélica internacionalcompetitiva, con más de 1400 cuadros, en diferentes espaciosanexos. El Club deMonte-Carloorganizó unamuestra especialtitulada ‘Philatelicevents thatchanged theworld’, unaexposición de 20cuadrosmostrandodocumentos ypiezas filatélicasespecialmenteraras y significativas de su periodo. El magnífico hall central(imagen superior) fue reservado en su totalidad para la feriacomercial, con cerca de 150 stands de comerciantes, casas desubastas, y administraciones postales, además de una sala delectura y otras actividades.

La organización esperaba más de 20.000 visitantes durantelos cuatro días. El primer día, con la entrada a 10 libras,asistieron posiblemente muchos menos visitantes de losesperados, y muchos comerciantes se quejaban del alto costede los stands y la falta de clientes.

According to changes in the postal ratesplanned for June 2015, which increased theprices and introduced both a European and Rest-

Guernsey Post did not produce any special postmarkfor the Essen issues. But, on its stand, collectors could

hand in letters and other philatelic material, for latercancellation and mailing from the island, as well as obtain a

special postal mark.

Four days after the end of the Essenphilatelic fair, in Germany, the GuernseyPost GG01GG01GG01GG01GG01 kiosk was again in service, inLondon !. Here, the capital of the UnitedKingdom hosted the largest philatelicexhibition in Europe, in recent years, withmore than 20,000 expected visitors fromaround the world. No one wanted to missthis great opportunity of promotion andsales.

The GG01GG01GG01GG01GG01 machine was installed onthe large Royal Mail stand, as part of the‘Post & Go Services’, along with five otherkiosks (!) from the UK, Jersey, andGibraltar postal administrations (left picture).

Allí se celebraba la Europhilex 2015Europhilex 2015Europhilex 2015Europhilex 2015Europhilex 2015, la mayorexposición filatélica de Europa de los últimosaños, con más de 20.000 visitantes esperadosde todo el mundo, y nadie quería perderse lamagnífica oportunidad de promoción y ventas.

As can be seen in the abovefirst day receipt, the stampsbought at the postal kiosk werebilled with a 20% surcharge on the face value, because of theVAT on sales made by Guernsey Post in the UK.

Guernsey Post also sold ‘Collectors strips’ with the‘Guernsey flag’ design and the same imprint, but issued by theinternal usage printer B002B002B002B002B002.
