Direct Democracy: Power of Many
● There are three major types of Democracy found today● Direct Democracy: All citizens work together to create
laws. No elections
Representative Democracy (Power of Elections)● More popular than Direct Democracy, Representative
Democracy is found in the United States.● The people elect officials to make laws for them. (Congress)
Democratic Republic● Also referred to as a Representative Democracy.● The people have a right to vote for laws and Representatives make laws.
Oligarchy: Power of a Few
● A group of powerful elites (upper class) or self-appointed officials run the government.
● The people have no say.
Aristocracy: Power by the Nobles● The government is ran by a group of nobles. Often hereditary (born into)● In Europe, only members of the nobility could rule and be apart of the
government. A simple farm owner had no say in government.
Totalitarianism ● Government has complete authority and limits speech, religion, press, and
assembly. One person is the head of the Government.● Limits the privacy of the citizens and often uses cruel and unusual punishment
as well as an unfair Court system.
Absolute Monarchy (Power by King/Queen)● Unrestricted power of one noble. Not controlled by a lawmaking body or
Constitution. ● The power of Monarchy is passed through heredity. If a King/Queen dies, the
next in line will be their son or daughter.
Theocracy (Power by Religion)● There is no separation between Church and State. ● The god or deity of that religion is considered the ruler of the State.● Vatican City is a modern example. God rules through the Pope.
Anarchy (Power by No one)
● The absence of law, order, and authority. ● There is complete freedom within the states.● The Purge
1. Types of Government worksheet 2. Finish Google Classroom documents from Thursday● History of Naturalization● Duties vs. Responsibilities
Due today - Worth 25 points.
Act it Out● In your groups of 4 you will be randomly assigned a type of Government.● Using your notes and creativity, come up with a short skit that you will act out
for the class about your type of Government.● Your skit should be at least half a page long. ● Narrator: An option for someone who does not like to act out. Read what is
happening before the skit happens (the background).● Have fun but make sure it stays on topic.
Example for Representative Democracy, the group could act out a skit where they all have an idea (that can become a bill) so they elect one of the people in the group to represent their ideas in Congress.
